May the Fourth Be With You 2015 #StarWarsDay

esb-behind-the-scenes

It is a very special Star Wars Day this year, what with the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In this year’s May the Fourth posting, I have included a great behind-the-scenes photo from the filming of The Empire Strikes Back – specifically, the Hoth sequence, featuring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill.

May the Fourth Be With You!

Here is the explanation of how Star Wars Day became “a thing” straight from the official Star Wars Website:

Say “May the 4th Be With You” out loud and you’ll hear the pun that Star Wars fans worldwide have turned into a rallying cry to proclaim their love of the saga. It’s the worldwide day to say “May the Force be with you” to all, and celebrate the beloved Star Wars story that binds our galaxy together.

One of the earliest known records of “May the 4th” used in popular culture is in 1979, as described here by author Alan Arnold while he was chronicling the making of The Empire Strikes Back for Lucasfilm:

Friday, May 4

“Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all.”

Once the Internet allowed Star Wars fans around the world to connect with one another, May the 4th soon became a grassroots tradition each year, with fans online and offline proclaiming it “Star Wars Day.”

While the idea of May the 4th did not start with Lucasfilm, the film company that created Star Wars has fully embraced the spirit of fandom that makes the day so special. StarWars.com as well as the official Star Wars social media channels (hashtag #StarWarsDay) help spread the word and showcase fan activity. More and more official partners have offered sales, giveaways and exclusives, and have hosted parties and other activities to mark the day.

May the 4th kicks off a season of celebration, particularly since the month of May has always been important to Star Warsfans. The six live-action movies of the Star Wars saga debuted in May (starting with the original Star Wars on May 25, 1977). The month of May includes George Lucas’ birthday (May 14, 1944), and has been the traditional start date of the popular Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World Resort.

With the exciting launch of a new trilogy of movies beginning with Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming in the near future, this day to celebrate the saga and its amazing fans is certain to become even bigger each year.

Oakley SI Ballistic Goggle 2.0 Review #oakley

Oakley-SI-Ballistic-Goggle-2-0

Oakley has long-been a maker of high quality ballistic eyewear for those individuals in the military, private security, and law enforcement sectors. Of course, most people know Oakley for their consumer sunglasses, which are stylish and functional. Having tried several pairs of goggles for use in my airsoft exploits, I knew I needed to evaluate Oakley’s new Oakley SI Ballistic Goggle 2.0 system.

Once the goggles arrived, I made haste to open it up and try them on. Along with the goggles, I was surprised to receive a very handy Oakley style carrying case for them. Think a larger version of the hard cases that usually ship with their consumer sunglasses and you’ll have an idea of what to expect. This hard case also serves to protect the goggles when in storage – something that most tactical goggle cases do not do (as they are usually made from soft material). The Oakley hard case also has a couple of attachment straps to the back of them so you can clip it onto MOLLE gear, etc. Also included in the case is an additional lens – the package contains both clear and gray lenses depending on the level of sun protection/shielding you desire. Changing the lens out is not super-hard but it does require a careful touch – just go slow and it will change out easy. Follow those instructions provided!

Wearing them for several hours at a time was very comfortable and, despite the humid climate, I rarely had an issue with them fogging up – like next to never! There were just a couple of instances where some fog started to build up in them but that was after a long time of usage and because I was mouth breathing into my lower face mask. When you do that, often times the hot breath will travel up into the goggles – it happens. As a tip from me, you can avoid a lot of fogging by blowing out each breath with just a bit of force in order to get the hot air away from you as much as possible. Thankfully, the fog quickly dissipated once I slightly cracked the seal of the goggle on my face and got some fresh air. I also found that by wearing a balaclava that covered by forehead, I reduced the fogging considerably as there was not as much sweat in the goggle area – less moisture means less humidity and that, in turn, means less fog.

goggle-case

I was excited to do more with these goggles than just play airsoft – although they did that job incredibly-well. I also took these goggles out to my local, outdoor shooting range where I had lots of fun shooting my Glock 21 pistol. A friend of mine who came along for the ride was also shooting and, more than once, I got hit in my eye area by ejected shell casings (a common occurrence when  lot of people are shooting together at the same time). Wearing the Oakley SI Ballistic 2.0 goggles protected me from hot brass without issue and I was glad to have them on. Also, the smoked lens blocked out enough sunlight so that I didn’t have the glare that clear lenses usually suffer from.

Overall, the Oakley SI Ballistic Goggle 2.0 system is an excellent eye protection solution – whether you are at an outdoor range or playing in an airsoft game. They retail for around $120 dollars depending on the retailer you purchase from and are available now. The Oakley SI Ballistic Goggle 2.0 system offers a terrific field of view and I had no problems with peripheral vision loss – something I have experienced on lesser-quality airsoft goggles.

Magicka: Wizard Wars Review (PC)

ss_e4e963c6eeb93f4afa626c3f3c56e2a7315aa061.1920x1080

The hottest PVP Arena game out there right now is League Of Legends and I have to confess I don’t like it that much. It is not very friendly to new players. Everyone gets wound up playing it and there is a ton of aggression thrown towards new players just learning the ropes. I like PVP but I also like it to be fun! Enter Magicka: Wizard Wars, a solid PVP arena game that has the fun of the now defunct Battlefield Heroes.

Description:
Magicka: Wizard Wars is a Spellcasting Action PvP game with the humor and the dynamic realtime spell system of Magicka. Players form teams of four and blaze their way across the battlefield, combining magical elements on the fly to create hundreds of spell combinations with wildly varying effects.

Features:
– 3 Game modes: 4-on-4 team play, 1-on-1 Duel Mode, and the brand new Soul Harvest mode that allows 4-on-4 team play with base defense and NPC battles.
– Fight intense battles – Co-op spellcasting, wielding fire and dragons as your weapons.
– Show your skills in fast-paced action, dynamically choose your spells on the fly to counter your opponents’ attacks.
– Friendly fire is in full effect, staying true to the Magicka tradition of “accidentally” killing your friends.
– 100 Robes, Staves, Skins, Weapons and your Humor of choice, 100s more to come – Be the Wizard you want to be!

ss_0434294b05e6006a0ffb2ec0b2dff576512cd9b9.1920x1080

Hands On:
First thing that needs to be stressed right off the bat: Magicka: Wizard Wars is a true free-to-play game with money being spent only by the impatient player – or the one who wants a vanity look for fun! In many supposedly free-to-play titles, you have to invest some money to have a competitive weapon whereas in Magicka: Wizard Wars, you have to be patient enough and play enough to unlock the higher-end items. That being said if you want a robe that looks a lot like a certain Dr. Horrible’s lab, coat you can buy it. If you want a weapon that is an axe designed to look like a guitar and has a special ability to let you tweak out a riff that will beat up the enemy with sound waves, that’s an option too. Through playing you can earn in-game currency and over time purchase most things you would want or you can spend a little real world money and look like Enchanter Tim from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The idea is to look unique and fit your personal geekdom. The item descriptions alone get you buying them.

In the game you get an imp which is near useless unless you get really creative strategy wise. It really comes down to being a vanity pet for the most part that will try to help you but you can expect it to die a horrible and quick death. That being said unlocking the Razer one and purchasing the Guy Fawkes imp that did nothing better than your other ones but leave a more interesting corpse is really a lot of fun.

ss_a856e770ac1a2f70de57d8f94e544f061beda9bd.1920x1080

The gameplay clearly has an emphasis on fun factor as well a huge combinations of spells, wards, shields, and attacks at your disposal. All game modes have a PVP focus with standard game styles such as dueling and team versus team  – though soul harvest goes for more of a League of Legends style of play. The soul harvest map is huge and full of NPCs so you can harvest their souls instead of the other player’s if you choose. Harvesting souls causes the shields and defenses of the enemy base to fail allowing base assault which is the only way to win. Fighting larger, tougher NPCs can result in multiple souls dropping so it can be advantageous to team up on a big baddie, just watch your backs for the enemy to come and PK you and take the souls for themselves. You can constantly switch up your attacks with more attacks unlocking as you go as well as more armor and weapons allowing your gameplay to constantly evolve. The replayability of the game is huge and addicting. Unlike in Ghostbusters, crossing the streams is a good thing, giving a more powerful attacks. However, watch out as if you accidentally start hitting your teammates they will die and curse your name, friendly fire is always on!

Last Call:
Magicka: Wizard Wars is a game for players who like PVP arena play but don’t like screaming, angry pre-teens griefing them the whole time. It lends itself to an ever-evolving play style filled with humor and general fun. There is a lot of “LOL” slang typed in the chats and just as many healing spells cast on fellow team members as there are attack spells on the other team. Magicka: Wizard Wars has comradery mixed with a sense of humor so lacking in most PVP arena games that it not only feels refreshing but welcoming. You can expect to see me playing regularly for a long time to come.

Gratuitous Space Battles 2 – A Review (PC)

gratuitous-spacebattles-2-screenshot-2

Positech Games has released the follow up to their strategic space battle game, Gratuitous Space Battles, the aptly named Gratuitous Space Battles 2. I did not play the original game, simply because its premise did not excite me or sound like something I would find fun. When Gratuitous Space Battles 2 came down my pike, I decided to give it a chance to see if my initial feelings about the series was correct, and boy were they! This game will find a fan base, of that I know for certain, it just isn’t going to be me.

Story

As the title suggests, there really isn’t a plot here, nor a story really. The game is set up as a series of gratuitous space battles that you either win and move to the next star system or lose and need to replay. There are different races in the game with descriptions of the races, but you never get any type of exposition for why these battles are occurring nor who is in command of any fleet.

I have no problem with games that do not have a plot or story line. There have been tons of fighting and sports games on the market that I absolutely love that do not have any type of story line nor plot. What saves these games, in my opinion, is how fantastic the game play is. When the game play is phenomenal, then the game can completely skip any type of plot or story line and still be a solid game. Gratuitous Space Battles 2 fails at both. There isn’t a story line here to keep my interest, and the game play is incredibly boring to me.

gratuitous-spacebattles-2-screenshot-9

Game Play

Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is a “hands off” space battle simulator. When I say “hands off”, that means during the battles, you have absolutely no control over the actions of your captains. This game represents the feeling of being an admiral in a space navy, where you will set up your fleet and create new space ships to do battle but must trust your captains completely during each actual battle.

Gratuitous Space Battles does have a lot of features, main among them is the ship builder. You can design and customize your ships from the ground up, with parts that you have unlocked during the campaign missions through research and development. New to Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is that your ships visuals will now carry over to the actual space battles, and not default to standard visuals. This feature is very, very deep! If you have ever wanted to engineer a space ship, then this is exactly what you are looking for. You have control of every aspect of the ship, from visual design, to power output, to shield generators, and crew. I found this to be very well done and extremely deep, just not very fun nor interesting for me. I had no clue as to what I was doing most of the time even though there was a tutorial. I found myself doing a lot of trial and error to find a design that even remotely worked.

Prior to any battle, you get to select your fleet and organize your command structure. You can choose from many different classes of ships, from fighters to cruisers to destroyers, and give them assignments to begin the battle with. You can assign your fighters to a certain ship to fly from, or assign ships to protect your larger ships from enemy fighters. All of these needs to be done prior to the battle, because once you begin the conflict, you can no longer give any orders.

gratuitous-spacebattles-2-screenshot-7

And that right there is where Gratuitous Space Battles dies for me. I was on board right up to the moment the battle starts, then I’m off to make a sandwich. I understand that this is the main draw to the game, but for me it just wasn’t any fun. Sure you can zoom into the action, speed up or slow down the action to really see what is going on, but I would just get up from my PC and come back to see who had won. It’s not that I don’t understand the game or the “hands off” feature, it’s not fun for me. This game will find some fans, but not from me.

Modding is supported by Gratuitous Space Battles 2, so I would imagine that you will find a ton of different mods to play with. You can also share your custom ship designs on Steam with others. Gratuitous Space Battles 2 also supports multiple monitors, however I have heard that using multiple monitors will crash your game. Since I am down to one monitor currently, I could not test this for this review.

Aesthetics

Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is a very cool game to look at. The graphical detail displayed during a space battle is intense and can be exciting to watch, like a great science fiction movie. However, since this is a video game, I want to do more than just watch the action. The explosions are fantastic, the environments are full of interesting things to see, and the action can get intense visually.

Voice acting is just “okay” for Gratuitous Space Battles 2. The computer voice overs during the battles can be extremely annoying, since it will repeat current danger over and over again, as if you had any chance of changing anything that was happening. If you are the admiral of this fleet, you would not receive these types of radio transmissions from the fleet’s computer system. I feel that the developers should have had much more realistic radio chatter between ships, including captains talking to each other about current developments, or even crew discussing current ship status’s with each other.

gratuitous-spacebattles-2-screenshot-11

Final Thoughts

Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is a good game for someone out there. It definitely fills a niche in the video gaming world and there will be plenty of people to buy and play it – I just won’t be one of them. I love the custom ship builder and how deep you can get with your creations. I love how you can build up your fleet to do battle with the next unknown enemy with no reason what so ever. I just do not love how the battles themselves are so hands off. The only reason you have to watch the battle at normal speed is to see exactly how your ship is doing at every moment, to help make the ship even better for the next battle. If this does sound exciting to you, then Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is your thing. If you have Gratuitous Space Battles, there may not be enough new features here to give you a reason to buy the game. For me, I just cannot recommend buying this one to anyone. In my opinion, it just wasn’t any fun to play at all, and at the end of the day that is why I play video games, to have fun.

The Evil Within DLC: The Assignment Review (PC)

evil-within-assignment-3

To say this game was hard for me to play would be an understatement. Now, don’t that statement to mean The Assignment is poorly designed or sucks or whatever (quite the contrary) but it can be a difficult game to play if you have incorrect expectations. I hadn’t played the base game “The Evil Within” at all when I took on this review. I messed around with it for a few minutes and then dove into the DLC with the misconception that this was just another hack-‘n-slash zombie shoot em’ up. I was so wrong! This is a survival horror game in which you generally don’t directly engage your enemies, instead utilizing stealth tactics to distract, disengage, or otherwise occupy them. I’ll be blunt, it isn’t a game style I prefer, but for those who enjoy this genre it’s pretty damned good.

The Assignment plays from the point of view of Juli Kidman, partner to Sebastian Castellanos, and tackles the question of what happened to her during the events in the base game. I haven’t played all the way through The Evil Within, so I can’t speak to exactly how much the story of the DLC interacts with its plotline. That’s something you’ll have to experience for yourself.

This game is not for the squeamish. It plays like a horror movie, in all its adrenaline-fueled, heart-pounding glory. As I mentioned above, there are no modern weapon systems in The Assignment. You must make use of your environment (and objects like thrown bottles) to avoid enemies. This leads to some extremely tense moments, and something like your dog running out of the room barking while your character is trying to escape that thing with the high heels is enough to make you jump out of your chair. Not that I know from experience…

JIHeC

Game controls can feel a bit awkward, and the off center view drove me a little crazy as I had the constant urge to center my character…but I wouldn’t be able to peek around corners without it. It’s an integral part of the game; it just takes some getting used to. At a few points I felt confused as to my next step, but you’ll figure out fairly early on to just keep looking around until you find something to interact with. It does a decent job of guiding the player (although the realist part of me is screaming HIT IT WITH THAT FIRE EXTINGUISHER).

Usage of lighting and sound is where The Assignment really excels. The music is understated and ominous, only building during a particularly tense moment. The creak of a door slowly opening gave me goosebumps. Dim, flickering lighting adds to the sense of dread. One of my favorite moments was when I saw the glowing eyes of an enemy approaching the door of the room I was in through the frosted glass window. I think I would have a panic attack if I played this game alone, in the dark, with surround sound on.
