The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Review (PC)

Telltale Games has pretty much gone all-in on the episodic graphic adventure game genre.  Out of the 12 or so games released by Telltale Games, I have played and completed about a quarter of them, so I wasn’t a stranger to this genre when The Walking Dead: A New Frontier came across my desk.  What I love about these types of games is the way that Telltale Games really focuses on the narrative and character development, while still making the games engaging to play as an actual game.  I felt that Batman:  The Telltale Series really had improved on this genre greatly over the last two games that I had played.  So, where then does The Walking Dead: A New Frontier fit in?  Let’s take a closer look.

Story

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is the fourth game by Telltale Games that takes place within the Robert Kirkman world of The Walking Dead.  This time around, you play as Javier Garcia, a former professional baseball player who is trying to keep the remnants of his family alive during the zombie apocalypse.  The story begins just as the zombies are beginning to rise, with Javier trying to reach his dying father’s home.  Due to the traffic that is being caused by the initial stages of the zombie outbreak, Javier reaches the house moments after his father passes away.  On the steps of the home Javier’s brother, David, is waiting for Javier and the two siblings begin to argue over family matters.  After the two brothers calm down, the family begins to prepare to move the corpse of the father, when one of the children tells the brothers that the father is awake.  Javier and David, along with the rest of the family, move cautiously into the room, only to find that their father has become a zombie.  Their father attacks, and is subdued, but only after biting the brothers’ mother.  The family races the mother out to a van, to try to get her to the emergency room.  Then the real story begins.

The first part of the first episode does a great job in building up the new characters so the player can get a feel for them.  The Walking Dead: A New Frontier introduces a whole new set of characters that you control.  When the game resumes, Javier is in the same van from the introduction, but with David’s wife, Kate, and David’s two children, Gabe and Mariana.  From the immediate outset of the game, you get the feeling that this group has been on the run for far too long, and is in desperate need for a safe place.  Now, I don’t want to get too much into the story blow for blow, but if you know anything about the Walking Dead universe, you can imagine that their bad day just goes downhill from there.

Let’s get a few things out in the open first, you will play as a whole new set of characters, with some characters from Seasons 1 and 2 making appearances.  Ultimately, that means that The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is connected to Seasons 1 and 2, but not a direct sequel.  The Walking Dead: A New Frontier occurs roughly 3 years after Season 2, and introduces a new human faction, in the New Frontier.  Pretty much like most other factions within The Walking Dead, the New Frontier started off as decent enough folks but have degenerated into brutal and savage individuals who raid other settlements for supplies.

Now, I never played any of the other Walking Dead games by Telltale, so I had no connection to any characters.  I only know that some of the characters appeared in earlier games, because I did some research on those characters.  So that really meant that I wasn’t as invested in those returning characters as somebody who had played the other games would be.  With that being said, I still feel that Telltale Games does some of the best work when it comes to narrative storytelling in video game form.  Does this feel like a Walking Dead game?  Yes, to me it does.  I know that others that I have talked to that might be bigger fans of the series had their issues and critiques, but I absolutely enjoyed my time with The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.

Gameplay

Let’s go over the game play for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier for the one or two of you out there that have yet to play an episodic graphic adventure game.  The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is a point and click adventure game that allows the player to take control of the main characters of the story.  Depending on what part of the story you are in, the main character will change, but for the most part in The Walking Dead: A New Frontier  you will be playing as Javier.  You move your character around parts of the game, interacting with items or initiating conversation with characters.  During some of the conversations, you will be given choices as to what your character will say, and  you have to respond within the time limit given by the options.  Of course, just like in real life, silence is always an option.  The other characters in the game will remember your responses, and your decisions that you make during the game.  These decisions will affect future interactions, and have consequences.  These consequences can be tiny and insignificant, or can lead to the death of a character.  The Walking Dead: A New Frontier will also access any old save file that you have from Seasons 1 or 2, so any past decisions will carry over into the new game.

Combat is mostly quick time events, with the player pressing certain keys according to the prompts on the screen.  In some cases, you will have to move the cursor until it is within a shrinking circle and click the mouse button to initiate that action.  These quick time events always seem to come up when I have my guard down, enjoying the story telling.  The button sequence is fairly forgiving, and missing one does not mean immediate failure or death.

Really, there isn’t anything new or exciting here that hasn’t been done about twelve times before.  However, just like the old adage goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.  Everything here works just perfectly, and draws the player even deeper into the world that Robert Kirkman has built.

Aesthetics

The aesthetics for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier are exactly the same as all of the other games in the series.  The visuals are done in a very cartoony way, with cell shading and heavy outlines around the objects in game.  This makes you feel like you are playing a graphic novel.  I still love the visuals of these types of games from Telltale Games, and feel that the aesthetics fit perfectly.  If you have never played a game like this before, imagine your favorite comic book coming to life, and you will have a great image as to what The Walking Dead: A New Frontier looks like.

The sound design again is nearly flawless for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.  Telltale Games always puts a lot of effort in their actors and the dialogue that goes into these games.  A great story can easily be ruined by an actor that isn’t into her or his part.  Every actor that is in The Walking Dead: A New Frontier feels like they gave it their all.  I do not remember any dialogue or performance that felt cheesy, over the top, or just bad.  The music and sound effects also worked brilliantly to bring the story to life.

Final Thoughts

After twelve episodic graphic adventure games, Telltale Games has got the formula down.  What you get with The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is another polished episodic graphic adventure game that fits nicely into Telltale’s collection.  Now, whether it’s a great The Walking Dead game or not, I can’t help you there.  I know the comics, and have seen some of the television show, but I never did play any of Season 1 or 2 or even the Michonne game by Telltale, to tell you if The Walking Dead: A New Frontier fits perfectly.  I can tell you this, I enjoyed my time with The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, just like I did with Telltale’s other games that I have played.  The story is engaging and really focuses on character development, the gameplay is simple yet is immersive enough to feel like you are still playing a game, and the aesthetics are just fantastic.  The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is another solid game by Telltale Games, and should definitely be checked out by anyone that is a fan of this style of genre.  The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is available now on Steam.

Mountain High Media Day 2017

Mountain High was once again nice enough to invite us to their media day to kick off the ski season. The snow has been falling like crazy in Wrightwood over the past couple weeks and it is keeping quite nice on the mountain – so nice that, on the day we visited, they were able to open the other side of the resort as well as the Tubing park! Our day started off with a cold drive up into town which was stopped temporarily as CalTrans was requiring people to attach snow chains to their tires in order to go any further into town. If you have never put snow chains on before, I highly recommend that you practice before you get to this point! Thankfully, the chains I have are auto-tightening which made things pretty straightforward but, if you don’t have those you are in for a time of it. Once we arrived, we hustled into the lodge and met up with the Mountain High / Oster Ads PR crew who provided some light breakfast foods and lift tickets.

From there, we embarked on our skiing and snowboarding adventure in some seriously cold weather. We were at about 30 degrees and active snowfall while we were there, which caused “white out” conditions for a time. You can see how things looked in our photo gallery below. We are still new to skiing and so we spent a lot of time around the practice slope just getting used to our skis. Going up the lift to the higher slopes would have been mighty harrowing with that weather the way it was! Usually, our Southern California Winter seasons don’t offer the kind of snowfall they are seeing at the mountain right now. It is a great time to go skiing as the powder is fresh and your board or skis will glide very easily over it, making for some quick downhills. We eventually settled into an après-ski lunch and then headed on into Wrightwood proper for some sightseeing and sledding (unfortunately, there is no place to bring your own sled or toboggan into Mt High).

Be sure to check out the gift/pro shop in the Mountain High lodge for souvenirs of your day’s fun as well as any supplies you may have forgotten. We personally forgot ski gloves, so we picked them up in the shop. The resort also offers equipment rentals, so don’t feel like you have to bring your own skis, boards, poles, or boots. The rental process is pretty straightforward, just head inside the building and use the terminals along the wall first – THEN wait int the line for the rest of the gear. If you wait in line before using the terminal, you are wasting your time. Also located on the resort is the Bullwheel Grill, where you can get something to eat and drink. Unfortunately, the grill was closed on the day we were there, but we have eaten there before.

Also, parking is available on site but you will probably want to be there as early as you can as the lots tend to fill up quickly. There is additional parking at the East and North resorts but that might not be where you want to spend you time depending on your goals, skill level, etc so it’s your call. For my purposes as a beginner, the West resort was best as that’s where the lodge and practice hill are located. If you feel like doing some tubing, the Tubing area is located to the North of the resort and tickets have to be purchased on site. I would recommend doing this early as the tubing park will sell out for the day after a time. Tubing is a lot of fun for adults and kids alike – the experience is a total blast.

Overall, we had a great time visiting Mountain High and highly recommend it to any of you Southern Californians looking to get your skiing or snowboarding adventures on. Plus, once you are done at the resort you can head into Wrightwood and enjoy some small town shopping and dining experiences. Lift tickets, season passes, and more are available at the official mountain high resort website. Also of note is their M.A.X. Pass program, which is a shared annual pass between Mountain High and 38 other mountain resorts! If you are a ski buff who chases the snow throughout the entire year, you might seriously consider this.

Otakon Vegas Report and Photo Gallery

I love conventions that allow cosplay, it lets people be who or how they want to be amongst others that, for the most part, won’t judge them.  There is of course costume judging but otherwise you might see a huge group of characters from the same show walking together, made up of people who didn’t even know each other beforehand. It brings people together!  Some characters are a bit obscure so that only the hardcore fans will know what the costume is at first sight, while others are mashups between multiple characters – or even a re-imagining of how that character would be in our world.  What it comes down to is that the limitations of a cosplay character is only that of the imagination… and safety issues (no real 7 foot steel swords allowed).

Some people buy a costume because to them being in the skin of the character is all that matters while others might spend hundreds, even thousands of hours putting their costume together trying one type of assembling before giving up and trying again.  The detail has increased with the affordability of 3D printers to make armor and weapons but at the same time there are a lot of costumes that just require sitting down, creating patterns and sewing away.  To me and to many involved in cosplay, it is how much fun they have in the end – that they love how they feel to be their hero that matters most.

Otakon Vegas is a little different than most of these events because Otakon is a broad look at Japanese culture from anime and manga.  At Otakon Vegas, you get to see real life Japanese Sumo wrestlers show their flexibility as well as learn about the tradition of their art and what sparring actually looks like.  I have seen martial arts sparring before, even done some mix martial arts myself, but to see a man who weighs 300 pounds wrestle a man who weighs 600 pounds and feel the floor as one or the other gets thrown to it is amazing.  There were rooms just dedicated to anime all day and night, others just dedicated to video games and even a couple floors of booths to buy various object and trinkets.  There was even a dubbing room where you could test your voice acting skills.

There were a lot of people sitting in halls doing nothing as they waited for one event of another which I found odd since there was always something scheduled, most of the time a few things available simultaneously.  I just chalk it up to Otakon Vegas still being young and having not quite caught it’s groove yet.  It would be cool to have better places to hang out at the show – perhaps throw some props and background sheets up for the cosplayers to take pictures with? Just an idea. Otakon Vegas just needs a bit of tweaking but I definitely recommend going now to get your own feel for it while it is young.

Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II Desktop Speaker Review

In looking for some new desktop speakers (my older set ended up taking a nosedive and breaking), I looked through a great many potential replacements. Having used several types of speaker systems in my gaming lifetime, I was hoping to reduce the physical footprint of the audio system as much as possible. My office is not that big and I don’t need to have gigantic speakers everywhere. Then again, I also did not want to sacrifice sound quality for this exchange. My answer came in the form of the Creative Labs GigaWorks T40 Series II desktop speakers.

The GigaWorks T40 Series II speaker system is made up of two free-standing satellite pylons – each containing three types of speakers. There is a cloth-domed tweeter unit for higher-end frequencies as well as two fiber woven cone drivers for low and mid-range sound. Capping these drivers off is a resonance chamber that helps funnel low-end sound out of the pylon for a subwoofer-style effect. The speakers require an AC power source – the adapter is included. Some have complained about this requirement but those detractors need to understand that power is required to send the audio signals through the six speakers.

These weighty satellite units are more than a match for a full 2.1 sound system and it saves you the extra space being taken up by a dedicated subwoofer! Using Tokyo city planning logic, Creative Labs built upwards, not outwards, and it is a very successful outcome for their efforts.

  • Powerful sound

  • Couldn’t really think of a negative

I have used the Creative Labs GigaWorks T40 Series II speakers for easy listening music all the way to first-person shooter games. When using speakers for Mp3 enjoyment, I usually start with showtunes. Hamilton, the latest craze in musicals, plays wonderfully on these speakers. Having the bass and treble control knobs next to the volume/power knob is brilliant and allows me to have direct control of the highs and lows, without getting bogged down in all the tweaks available via an equalizer. Moving into the hard stuff, I loaded up Dragonforce and blared out Operation Ground and Pound and reveled at the clear separation of highs and lows, thanks to the GigaWorks T40 Series II’s multi-driver system. Finally, I ran an assortment of video games while using the speakers. Master of Orion was no challenge for the speakers and the adrenaline-fueled explosions of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare came through like gangbusters. The system us truly exceptional – especially at its price point of $124.95 on Amazon.

Overall, the Creative Labs GigaWorks T40 Series II speaker system is a terrific option for those of you in need of powerful desktop audio that won’t break your bank account. The three different sound sources per satellite provide a wide range of frequencies that you would normally need several speaker units and a subwoofer to equal – especially in a home office environment. The GigaWorks T40 Series II speaker system is a great choice for gamers and audiophiles in their home office, dorm, or bedroom.
