Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con 2016 Photo Gallery

The Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con is one of my favorite cons of the year. I have always looked forward to it – to experience the big names in the business that it always seems to draw.  The past has brought Dr. Who’s and CW bad guys as well as great artists who created some iconic comic book and cartoon characters.  This was the first year it had moved into the Las Vegas Convention Center Central Hall to give itself the breathing room it was beginning to lack in the South Point ballrooms.

Normally I would have thought moving it to the big convention center would have brought even bigger names, though some of the past would be hard to top and just as welcome to anchor the convention.  Unfortunately and strangely the show was a bit anorexic when it came to celebrities this year.  Rob Liefield who has shown up yearly with great energy was in the program but at the last minute didn’t make it and former celebs and writers such as Len Wein, George Perez, and John Barrowman were never on the list.  This didn’t stop it from having some great panels about Preacher and Harley Quinn with signing slack neatly taken up by Steve McNiven and Kevin Eastman but I hope with the new space will come new possibilities and next year we will wind up with the star studded con we are used to from this event.

World of Warships Short Dev Cycles Produce Results

July 7, 2016 — The World of Warships team has chartered a new development course—short-term dev cycles. This reorganized process means that development can react and implement community demands quickly, with most updates happening every three weeks. Along with  fine-tuning the overall World of Warships experience, development will continue to enrich gameplay with new features and content at a steady cadence.

This new approach was first used on weather effects that were added stepwise over several updates. The team started by introducing them on one map for tiers 8–10, tested these effects thoroughly and, listening to player feedback, fully polished the feature, then implemented it for vessels of Tier 6 and higher across 11 maps.

Today, short-term dev cycles introduces revamped matchmaking, with the developers having upgraded the algorithm to further balance teams. Now, players will find their battles even more exciting, as the matchmaker will work to make both teams even more equal in force, yet still diverse in gameplay style. Now, neither team has the upper hand and victory hinges even more on player skills and teamwork.

World of Warships will also experiment with new game modes. The team is currently working on several prototypes, and, starting today, the Bastion game mode will only be available for higher-tier battles on the Atlantic map. In it, players will be able to take part in capturing, assaulting or defending onshore installations.

Later in July another game mode will become available for testing—Epicenter—with more details to be disclosed soon. The team will also be working towards releasing the first iteration of integrated voice chat along with many anticipated improvements to the visibility system, mini-map and account leveling.

Blood Bowl 2 Gets The Undead Team

Blood Bowl 2 is the sequel to the video game adaptation of Games Workshop‘s famous board game that combines American football with the fantasy world of Warhammer. The new screenshots unveiled today showcase the upcoming Undead team and their deadly Players. They will be available, along with their own Starplayers, in the Undead DLC available late July for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC/Mac.

We remind you that PC/Mac Steam players of Blood Bowl 2 can still benefit from the FOUNDERS INCENTIVE: Players will receive the Undead, as well as the Necromantic and the Nurgle teams for free, as long as they purchased the game before the races release. Also, Blood Bowl 2 is currently 60% off on Steam until July 4th. This is a perfect opportunity to get the game at an attractive price, and receive the coming races for free as soon as they are available.

Last but not least, all the PC/Mac owners of Blood Bowl 2 will have access to a Beta next week featuring the upcoming Undead team and several updates and improvements. For more information, make sure to follow Blood Bowl on Facebook and Twitter.

The Undead Team

Death comes often for Blood Bowl players, and the souls of the most passionate sometimes rise up again to relive the scenes of their former glory. The Undead team, raised by the Liche-lords of the Old World, have the unique skill “Regenerate” which makes them incredibly difficult to kill. They have incredibly agile players, the Ghouls and the Wights, but they are often too fast for their shambling, but fearsome, Mummy teammates to keep up.

Finally, two Star Players are joining the Undead: Ramtut III is a mighty and powerful mummy who has spent countless years on the pitch. Morg n’ Thorg, someone who has faced Ramtut on the pitch and lived, happens to be his sworn nemesis. Count Luthor Von Drakenborg the vampire carries impressive stats and the Hypnotic Gaze ability, and is one of our most fearsome Star Players yet!

Soon to come, the Necromantic and the Nurgle! Stay tuned, sports fans!

The Walking Dead Attraction Review at Universal Studios

The Walking Dead walk through attraction, the latest feather in Universal Studios Hollywood’s cap, is scheduled to open on July 4. However, we were among the lucky few to get access the attraction at a recent park media event which saw several members of the AMC show’s cast and crew in attendance. As alluded to, The Walking Dead attraction is based on AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead, which is based on Robert Kirkman’s amazing comic series, The Walking Dead. No, this just isn’t a grab for Google search terms, there is just a lot of The Walking Dead zombie goodness to go through.

The Walking Dead walk through attraction can best be described as a Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights maze taken to “11”. The sets, props, and animatronics are all outstanding and look like they belong on the set of the television show. The starting cue area of the attraction was populated by Negan’s goons – however I am unsure as to how many of the actors will be on-site during actual operating hours.

the-walking-dead-attraction-004-universal-studios

A big positive aspect of the attraction was that guests are permitted into the experience in groups of about 5 people at one time. The attendants space the small groups out just enough so that each one gets an individual experience. Hopefully they can continue this when crowds get larger. I have found that a cattle call of guests can ruin an attraction like this – especially one that features tight corridors and timed effects/scares. Smaller groups also help make the attraction more intimate – it feels like your group’s personal story of the zombie apocalypse instead of just an animatronic museum to walk five feet, look, and repeat ad nauseam. With these group sizes, you ARE part of the experience.

Also used, albeit with way more restraint than in the park’s Horror Nights mazes, are some smell effects! Again – they are sparingly used to a much greater effect in The Walking Dead attraction, which I appreciate. I have always felt Horror Nights mazes rely on those scents too much, but I digress…

After going through the gauntlet of Negan’s goons, you end up in the Harrison County Hospital featured in The Walking Dead’s pilot episode (where Rick wakes up, confused and hurt). From there, it is a very cool walk down memory lane – going sequentially though the (so far) six seasons of the AMC show. You will visit several of the show’s major locations – all made real by some seriously talented craftsmen. The prison, Arno Farms, and a lot more are featured so look sharp for little Easter Eggs planted about the various sets you’ll walk through.

A big question we kept wondering was what would happen to the attraction during the park’s annual Halloween season Horror Nights event? Would it become a maze or would it stay the same. It appears as though that the attraction will get additional set pieces, live-actor talent, etc to ratchet it to an even scarier level! This is a brilliant move by Universal Studios and I can’t wait to experience it first-hand when the scary season comes around. Does this mean that the attraction will take the place of any other The Walking Dead experience for Halloween Horror Nights? Time will tell.

the-walking-dead-attraction-050-universal-studios

Speaking of live actors – yes, there are definitely live actors portraying both the living, the dead, and the walking dead inside the attraction. However, more of the scares and gimmicks come from some amazing animatronics than a traditional haunted house with live monsters around every corner. This smaller amount of live actors does not detract from the experience, however, as the actors that are in the walk through attraction are used to great effect and, as I mentioned, the animatronics and props are incredible.

Overall, The Walking Dead walk through attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood is a terrific addition to the park and shows off a lot of elements from the AMC television show which fans will love. I definitely recommend checking The Walking Dead attraction out when it opens on July 4, it is a scary and fun romp through an amazing television show brought to life all around you.

Knott’s Berry Farm Ghost Town Alive Review

Running now through September 5, 2016 you will find that the newly-refurbished Ghost Town section of Knott’s Berry Farm is bristling with activity. “Ghost Town Alive” populates the Old West town with a cast of characters which interact with guests throughout the day. Furthering this immersion is an over-arching storyline which plays out and allows for guests to be a part of.

Think of it like an in-person MMO. Simply walk up to one of the many characters in Ghost Town and hail them (EverQuest fans, unite!). Strike up that conversation, as you might be sent on an errand for that person that leads you to another person – who also has a quest for you to undertake. Quest rewards? It’s got those too – but I don’t want to spoil them for you. There are the usual Old West town tropes – a doctor, sheriff, outlaw, etc as well as many others.

ghost-town-live-106

What impressed me most was just how, unlike the characters at the “park down the street”, these folks interacted with each other in actual dialog. From what I gleaned, the cast of characters went through five weeks of training to learn all their mannerisms, dialog, etc with a great emphasis on improvisational techniques.

The refurbishment of Ghost Town went very well, and the park’s oldest themed area has never looked better. And, while these enhancements are a welcome thing from a guest perspective, what really sells the area are the previously-mentioned characters. The place simply looks fantastic and is a blast to walk around. We spent most of our time simply going from character to character and being a part of the Ghost Town Alive story.

Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant is open once again – this time, with all-new decor and interior construction. Check out the photos in the gallery below to see it for yourself. The food hasn’t changed much and is still an excellent experience. Dignitaries used to come to the restaurant from far and wide – now the park can be proud of how the restaurant looks. It was getting very dated before, and this breathes an amazing amount of new life into it.

ghost-town-live-053

GhostRider, the park’s wooden roller-coaster, underwent a huge renovation, with the track being completely replaced. The results are exceptional – never before has that coaster felt so smooth to ride on. Riders of the previous incarnation of the coaster all know how jarring it was on one’s back and neck – fun, but jarring. Now, however, you won’t have to worry about that anymore. It still has that wooden coaster feel but with more of a steel coaster ride experience.

Overall, Ghost Town Alive, the new Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant, and the renovated GhostRider are all fantastic experiences and I highly recommend you check them out. Remember, the Ghost Town Alive events only occur until September 5th…. Then things start to get scary at Knott’s.
