Mondo Unveils Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene Board Game

Austin, TX – July 12, 2018 – Celebrating 25 years of dinosaur chaos with the anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s unequaled Jurassic Park, Mondo Games is excited to unveil their next board game, “Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene.” As with the highly successful board game for The Thing, movie fans and board game enthusiasts can expect exciting gameplay and gorgeous artwork, featuring the immensely talented artist Matthew Woodson. The game will be available online at MondoTees.com and in stores everywhere this Fall. The box top will be on display at Mondo’s booth at San Diego Comic-Con (#435), and attendees will have the opportunity to get a special Jurassic Park patch when visiting the booth.

If the great John Hammond taught us anything it would be to never stop asking, “what if?” What if we could clone an extinct species using preserved genetic material? What if there existed a source of fossilized dinosaur DNA buried deep below the earth’s surface? What if dinosaurs roamed the earth again? Here at Mondo Games we asked ourselves these very same questions. Using state-of-the-art tabletop technology our leading game scientist, Luke Byers, has created the ultimate gaming adventure.

“In our approach to “Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene”, we took many of our favorite elements of a traditional dungeon crawl style board game and spliced them with one of our favorite films of all time. The goal was to create something truly unique and incredibly fun to play” said Byers.

Taking an asymmetrical approach to the game’s playable characters and factions, “Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene” is a 2-4 player adventure of varying strategies, objectives, and perspectives. Through a scenario-based system the game becomes a truly chaotic mix of modern humans and prehistoric beasts.

While exploration of the park is at the core of each player’s motivation, the means by which separate factions achieve their goals couldn’t be more different. Whether working in the field of science as the head of InGen to maintain the stability of the park’s infrastructure or running terrified as invited guests of John Hammond, the humans use their abilities, specializations and resources to reach their objectives.

The quick, lethal and stealth-like Raptor faction proves that humans are not the only animals that utilize their intellect and communication skills to solve the many movement challenges the park presents. The fast, gigantic and formidable Tyrannosaurus Rex poses a constant threat to all of the players. Driven by her base instincts, her objectives are the most straight forward… EAT!

“With some of the most beautiful art in gaming today by the immensely talented Matthew Woodson, we hope this game ‘…finds a way’ on tables of gamers and Jurassic Park fans alike for millions of years to come,” said Byers.

GAME DESCRIPTION

“Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene” is a 2 to 4 player asymmetrical miniatures board game, for age 14 and up. Choose your faction from the following: InGen, Park Visitors, Raptors or the T. rex. Find items needed for your faction, attack or avoid other dinosaurs, gain experience and customize your faction. With several scenarios and modular environment tiles for players to explore, each faction has unique objectives to complete in an effort to win the game!

FACTION DESCRIPTIONS

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex: Instinct Objectives
    • Quick, methodical, and unstoppable best describe the T. rex faction. One thing she is not, though, is quiet. The T. rex’s unrelenting drive makes her highly focused on satisfying her natural instincts… at all costs.
    • The T. rex can move twice as fast as the other factions and can affect the movement of the other players with her fearsome roar, all while completing her objectives.
  • Raptors: Seek and Destroy Objectives
    • The Raptors are a cunning, resourceful, and flexible faction. Their stealth allows them to move quickly and quietly. Unique from all other park dinosaurs, their communication abilities enable them to work together in defending areas in their control, triangulate attacks on humans and park animals, and discover weaknesses in the park’s defenses.
  • Park Visitors: Survival Objectives
    • Park Visitors are both in awe of the park and terrified by its destructive nature. Visitors are able to extract the resources they find and use them to complete objective requirements or activate more powerful faction abilities. Highly skilled in their respective fields, each character brings a unique ability to the group as they make their way through the park and accomplish objectives.
  • Ingen: Park Management Objectives
    • With systems crashing throughout the park, InGen is desperate to keep it functioning. Somewhat blind to the park’s status, their intimate knowledge of it makes them both helpful and dangerous to dinosaurs and humans alike. A successful InGen player must carefully manage resources and use their unique abilities to help shape the movements of other players.

Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con 2018 Wrap-Up

It isn’t a surprise when a comic convention comes along with a boasting name that it has to live up to.  “Greatest”, “American”, “World”, “Phenomenal” and, of course, “Amazing” are just a few of the adjectives used to describe them and, when they are starting out it sometimes just seems like wishful thinking.  Then there is the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con, one that has had every right to boast over the years for the talent and exhibitors it pulls in.

I had recently transplanted myself to the Las Vegas valley when I first heard about Amazing Con during its inaugural year.  I knew better than to be impressed by a convention’s name and to turn a skeptical eye towards the list of expected celebrities because everyone of us has had something come along and at the last minute we go “nah I would rather stay home.”  In the case of Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con though that hardly ever happens, maybe one or two people but usually not the top draws.  It may have something to do with the chance to hang out in Las Vegas with a free room for a weekend, maybe it is because when it comes to people who do the convention circuit there is a certain fraternity getting to see one another again.  It’s not very often that you see people arrive at the bigger conventions here without heading over to another booth to give someone a hug.  The time I saw Stan Lee come over and give Todd McFarland a big hug and smile will be something I remember forever.

Those are the kind of moments you might see at the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con because the convention really is amazing and not only does it draw massive numbers of fans it brings together the industry and I wouldn’t be shocked if many collaborations started at its tables.  The headlining anchor has been year after year Rob Liefeld who brings a level of excited energy that you hardly see in any other human let alone a comic book legend.  He has done so much, starting with comics and pushing properties towards films and television that most people would have burned out long ago but he is still a fanboy when he meets other stars and if you ask him a question it never feels like he is brushing you off. You have his attention and he really wants you to leave the conversation happy.  It may sound like I am gushing a bit about the guy, maybe I am, but few people shine so bright that you find yourself glowing a bit for being around them.

The celebrities are always well rounded, especially when you consider the convention has “comic” in its name.  Movie stars, TV heroes and voice over artists all find a place at the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con.  Charlie Cox, Daredevil in the show by the same name, was the television anchor while Jason David Frank, the Green Power Ranger and all around cool guy plus adrenaline junkie (ask him some time), is another anchor in the sense that he is good about showing up and supporting cons he commits to doing in a big way.  A couple of relative new comers to the Vegas conventions scene were Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) and Lewis Tan (Shatterstar) of Deadpool fame.  They brought on their fresh look at being movie stars and how that has change things for them at conventions and life in general.

As for comics the convention could have gotten away with calling itself the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Legends Con with the line-up, many of which come back year after year.  Rob Liefeld, Jason Aaron, Tyler Kirkham, and Jim Starlin just to name a few.  Attendance showed that the names were appreciated too since the convention was packed starting Friday and had people still looking around right up until close on Sunday.

It is also nice to say that the non-profits got places at the convention too showing just how much the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con is part of the community.  The United Blood Services had a table and a mobile blood lab, the Critical Care Comics of Las Vegas was there collecting funds to visit children’s critical care wards and deliver comics while in super hero costumes and the Very Awesome Girls were there having a silly game of Family Feud with heroes versus villains while collecting money for charity the whole weekend.

The biggest show of support was in the form of Where We Live, a graphic novel that was on sale throughout the con that donated 100% of it’s proceeds to one of the October 1st shooting charities.  They even had a panel on Sunday where 16 of the over 100 contributors came to tell their experiences and why they chose to contribute to this book which shows the terror and community that the mass shooting brought to our home.

Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con is one of the best comic convention to hit the Vegas Valley every year and one of the top couple to hit the state every year.  While still sore from this one we are already looking forward to next year’s.

Knott’s Berry Farm Ghost Town Alive 2018

On Sunday June 10th, we had the pleasure of attending the media event at Knotts Berry Farm for their 2nd annual Ghost Town Alive! This event sees the park’s Ghost Town filled with actors playing various themed characters as well as having tons of interaction with park guests. The main premise of Ghost Town Alive is that the Western town is celebrating its “Founders Day” and having a grand ol’ time of it. However, there is a bandit on the loose named Arkansas Jones who is looking to spoil the fun by bringing plenty of chaos. The town sheriff and deputies are on the look out for Jones, so keep a sharp eye out as you never know where he will pop up.

The actors did their best to stay in character and all seemed well-versed in their backstory and purpose for being there. They all played off each other very well. It all flowed smoothly, down to their dialect. It felt like you were in the Wild West and the kids we witnessed speaking to the various characters were having a terrific time.

I really liked how the town would release newspapers throughout the day, chronicling the events that are unfolding right in front of you. These newspapers also made for fun little souvenirs that guests could keep to commemorate their visit.

So many things happen throughout the day…. We visited the Post Office and were treated to some education as the postmaster taught us how to spell out our names using Morse code! We were subsequently interrupted by a shootout in front of the Sheriff’s office, which was a lot of fun to see. We also enjoyed watching all the guests running around Ghost Town delivering messages and packages to the various storefronts to get the next clues in their various quests. Guests would be tasked with a variety of things: Retrieving objects from other characters, exchanging things for gold at the assayer’s office, witnessing various events then reporting them to someone – just a lot of interesting things to do. It kind of reminded me of a big MMORPG.

Thankfully, on the day we attended, crowds were on the lighter side so we were able to get in the Ghost Town Grille without a wait. This might pick up more as the season goes on, so be sure to get your tickets early. Also, if you are attending this event, I would make sure you stop by the new Beach Blanket Beagle stage show. It’s a fun show at the Charles M. Shulz theatre also acts as an entertaining way for guests to escape the Southern California weather and enjoy the air conditioning.

Ghost Town Alive goes on at Knott’s Berry Farm now through September 3, 2018 on the following schedule:

  • May 26 – August 19 (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun)
  • August 24 – August 26 (Fri, Sat, Sun)
  • August 31 – September 3 (Mon, Fri, Sat, Sun)
