EXTINCTION Gameplay Trailer Released

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2017) — Avil is the last-remaining Sentinel and only he has the power to save humankind. Iron Galaxy presents a brand-new gameplay trailer for their upcoming action-adventure game – Extinction.

Extinction places emphasis on high-speed traversal around an interactive environment. Avil must move quickly – traversing across rooftops, alongside buildings, and more – to save humanity from the encroaching horde, and take down the seemingly endless waves of ogres (known as Ravenii) using his powers as a trained Sentinel. And while the swarm of smaller minions may seem like the crisis at hand, there’s always a larger problem on the horizon.

Armies of ogres are equipped with their own weapons and armor, requiring Avil to use tactical thinking, the structure of the environment, and even the enemies themselves in order to quickly eliminate the giants before they destroy all that’s left of the world and drive it to extinction.

It will take more than raw power to defeat these monstrous foes. Avil needs to use strategy, cunning and quick thinking to permanently take down ogres covered in layers of bone, iron, spikes, thorns, and dark steel.

Avil fights these giants in real-time combat, but there’s only one way to stop them permanently – decapitation. However, a Ravenii decked out in spiked armor isn’t going to be easy to take-down: its armor will injure Avil if he comes in contact with it. Therefore, he must lure a spiked Ravenii into smashing the ground, cracking his own armor until it breaks away. Only then can Avil sever a limb, vertically run up the monster’s torso, and make the finishing blow using a Sentinel’s most valuable skill: a powerful rune strike.

Extinction will be available on PlayStation®4, the family of Xbox One Devices, and PC in Q1 2018.

Leatherface (2017) Film Review

The late Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a seminal horror classic – one which, when released in 1974, caused massive controversy and spawned a whole new type of horror film. Unfortunately, it also spawned a large assortment of unsuccessful sequels. The latest in this line of sequels is actually a prequel film titled Leatherface from Lionsgate. However, much like Rob Zombie’s prequel of John Carpenter’s Halloween, it largely does not work on many levels.

The film starts off at one of Leatherface’s childhood birthday celebrations. We find out that Jed Sawyer (the actual name of human skin mask-wearing killer) will not take a life when prompted by his Mother (Lili Taylor) and family, showing that he started out with somewhat of a human heart. Eventually, Jed finds himself in a mental hospital after the Sawyer family kills the daughter of the local Sheriff (Stephen Dorff) who then vows revenge against them. Ten years later, four patients including Jed (now under a different name) and one hostage, a nurse (Vanessa Grasse), escape the asylum and go on a gore-filled road trip.

Leatherface makes some huge mistakes – the biggest being what Rob Zombie did to Michael Myers in his Halloween prequel: He made him a sympathetic person. We see Leatherface as a young boy and young man with feelings and as someone who even comes to the rescue of other people at times. It humanizes the deranged behemoth we see in the original film and hurts that movie in the process. They do this to bolster a surprise reveal midway through the film which makes no sense given how Leatherface appears in the original film. Biologically, it simply does not make sense.

The second big problem with Leatherface is that there are no “good” characters in the film that you want to root for or put the viewer in the situation. The closest we have is the nurse character, and she doesn’t get nearly enough time to develop and ends up pushed to the background due to the more powerful performances by some actors in the film. This is not to say that Vanessa Grasse is not a good actor – she is and it shows in what she has to work with. Her character is simply not written in a way that allows her to shine like she could. Even the Sheriff, whom I had hoped would end up being the “good guy”, ends up being corrupt. In fact, most every character in this movie is corrupted in some way except. You NEED a character the audience can connect to in these films. Without it, the film loses that gnawing and building tension that keeps an audience engaged and hoping upon hope that the “good guy” doesn’t end up a skin mask.

The third big problem in the film is that, while the movie is titled “Leatherface”, it doesn’t focus enough on Leatherface! Instead, it ends up focusing on a number of other characters doing “bad”  (or just plain stupid) things in a poorly-presented manner. What is very clear is that, despite a couple enjoyable previous films, French directing duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury do not have a grasp on what made the 1974 film great. What’s weirder is that the writer, Seth M. Sherwood, doesn’t have any other writing credits to speak of on IMDB. How does a two-person directing team and screenwriter with a handful of credits between the three of them get put at the helm of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel movie?

Leatherface does have a couple bright spots, though, namely in its cinematography and performances. Lili Taylor, Stephen Dorff, and Finn Jones all put in great performances – again, with that they are given to work with. The film is shot beautifully, with foreboding angles, dark moodiness, and well-lit gore.

Unfortunately, I just can’t get behind Leatherface as a horror film or, for that matter, film I would buy or rent despite some good cinematography and performances. Those two factors are the only things which saved Leatherface from being rated at 1 out of 5 stars. If you really are craving this kind of horror movie, you should just rent or buy the original film and skip Leatherface altogether. It devalues the original film – especially if you have never seen the classic movie before.

Haunters: The Art of the Scare Review

When first hitting the play button on the Haunters: The Art of the Scare screener I was granted access to, I was giddy with anticipation. Haunted houses and Halloween are big areas of enjoyment for me and the idea that a documentary was focusing on those topics was thrilling. Unfortunately, what followed after that was an hour and a half of the most wrongly-focused documentary I have ever seen. To be fair, Haunters: The Art of the Scare begins well and gives brief segments featuring actual haunters. After around ten minutes, however, it devolves into a long… so long… look at the controversial torture experience “McKamey Manor” and its creator, Russ McKamey. It talks with his neighbors as well as other individuals who have experienced his event.

Most haunters I have spoken with agree that McKamey Manor is not a haunted house and should not be associated with haunted attractions or extreme haunts at all. This is no judgement call on my part in terms of whether or not you should apply for entry into his event, that’s your business. My point is that a documentary talking about haunters and scaring should focus on that, not a non-haunt event that relishes in acts of controlled torture with no “safe word”. If this were part of an anthology series with a title like, “Haunters: McKamey Manor” I could see it. But not in the format of a survey documentary like this.

Look at this display from Haunted Overload!! It’s amazing, but only in the movie for like two minutes.

Haunters: The Art of The Scare does not help public perception of haunters – in fact, it hurts it. By focusing so much on McKamey Manor and the negative things associated with it, it makes it seem like all haunters are in that group – which they are not. There is even a part of the documentary where McKamey himself mentions having to fire an employee because he was molesting and abusing another employee who was underage! Then it goes into how he wanted to move his event out of state but those communities prevented him from starting it in their neighborhoods. How director Jon Schnitzer decided on McKamey Manor as the central event of his documentary when there are SO MANY good haunts out there is beyond me. I don’t know if this was just a lack of understanding about the haunt community on Schnitzer’s part or if he and McKamey have some relationship which colored his direction of the film, but it wasn’t a good thing either way.

Two thirds of the way through the documentary, we get some additional, albeit brief, segments from other haunters. These are the brightest spots of the 90 minute documentary. Those segments are when we get the experiences of real haunters – people like Shar Mayer, who goes into her love of the craft and how she sustained life-long injuries from a guest while working a haunt but continues to press on. These brief segments give us a “slice of life” and look into what these scare actors go through and are mere glimpses at what potential this documentary had. Why in the world didn’t they add more of these… They were filmed so well! Oh, what could have been…

Russ McKamey, get used to seeing his face…

To reiterate at the director’s credit, Haunters: The Art of the Scare is shot very well! It has some great cinematography and a very professional look that denotes how much work went into its creation – but the amount of work invested is not Haunters problem. With the brief, bright spots of this documentary and the professional level of editing and cinematography that went into it, I truly hope that Schnitzer will go on to make more well-rounded haunt documentaries.

Unfortunately, Haunters: The Art of the Scare, does little to accurately portray the experience of real “haunters” and actually ends up hurting public perception of them by the end of the film. It was a poor choice to focus so heavily on McKamey Manor and the film would have been better served to have more segments like those with Shar Mayer. This film had so much potential and a lot of backing – in the end, however, poor decisions sink it.

****UPDATE (10/5/2017)

It should be noted that the screener we looked at did not contain any bonus material. This material, according to some we have been in contact with, has a lot more footage and interviews from other haunted events. Why this footage is not in the main documentary is beyond me but it could make the entire disc edition more worth your time. I will attempt to get a disc version of Haunters to see it first-hand.

Halloween Horror Nights 2017 Review

It’s that spooky time of year again, and we eagerly made our way to Universal Studios Hollywood for their Halloween Horror Nights event. In case you haven’t heard of Horror Nights, it is a special evening event that transforms the movie studio and theme park into a collection of monsters, haunted houses, and more all waiting to scare park guests. The first part of our night was taken up by the annual red carpet walk, where numerous celebrities made their way into a gala. Checkout some of the celebrities walking the carpet below in the photo gallery.

After the red carpet, we were escorted through three haunted houses in order to film our walk through videos. The first maze on our list was The Shining. This maze was terrific, hitting several cinematic moments from the horror classic. One thing that did bother me was that it fell victim to a recent trend in Horror Nights’ mazes – monster characters peering down onto guests from large rectangular holes in the walls. This is fine now and then but it seemed like all the new mazes have these in overabundance – so much that it kind of got to an “alright already” point. I would rather see monsters walk right up next to me – but, I digress.

Unfortunately, there still is no transportation for guests looking to get down into the backlot for the three mazes located therein (aside from disabled transport). Be warned that, from Transformers: The Ride, it is a .35 mile walk each way so be prepared with some comfy shoes. Also, they still route guests through a psychedelically-lit Toxic Tunnel that is very uncomfortable to walk through. This part of Halloween Horror Nights I could do without – it is just headache-inducing and simply not scary. Once you get down into the backlot, however, you get the chance to experience several haunted houses: Ash vs Evil Dead, SAW, and American Horror Story. Also located on the backlot is their Urban Inferno scare zone. It is a small, maze-like zone but featured some amazingly hellish visuals, loads of victims, and horrifying demons to contend with.

Once we arrived in the backlot, we got the chance to go through the SAW and American Horror Story mazes. SAW was a treat as, right before we were escorted in, actor Tobin Bell (SAW, SAW II, SAW III,….) who played Jigsaw went in to much fanfare. SAW is loaded with victim characters in traps of all manner of diabolical design – many from the various SAW films. American Horror Story focused on the Roanoke season and featured a number of the show’s memorable monsters – from the nurses to the pig man and even The Butcher – although I didn’t think she was used enough. Ash vs Evil Dead was a moderately-entertaining haunted house, with the most memorable moment being a large deadite puppet of Henrietta Knowlby from the original Evil Dead film. This puppet was a real sight and worth walking through the maze for – even if the rest of the haunted house was so-so.

I do applaud Universal Studios for cutting back on the foul fog smells this year. At past Halloween Horror Nights visits, many of the mazes just continuously stank of fecal matter, vomit, and more. This year, the fog smells are much more smartly-utilized and, while still foul at times, make a lot more sense given the haunted house’s narrative.

When we were hungry, we decided to eat at the Italian food place located within the Springfield area of the park. At past Horror Nights events, this place yielded good plates of pasta, lasagna, and a lot more. I was somewhat disappointed to find out that they converted over to a cutdown menu for this year’s event. The pizza and garlic bread are still good, mind you, but good luck finding a place to eat your food. They have taken away the dining area of the food place to create a beer garden, which was filled to the brim with people. We had to make our way across the street and wait for a table above Moe’s Tavern.

This year’s Jabbawockeez show is, as always, stunning and entertaining, with their dance skills on full display. During your visit to Halloween Horror Nights, make sure you attend one of their showtimes.

The Terror Tram is still suffering from some bottlenecks in many areas. This year, the tram has been taken over by murderous, possessed Good Guy doll Chucky – voiced by Brad Dourif! Dourif, for those that don’t know, is the voice of Chucky from all the Child’s Play films. The tram walking experience starts out really good, with a trip through numerous scenes featuring the “Titans of Terror”, consisting of Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface. Unfortunately, at several moments throughout the walking tour, things get backed up and we just started wondering if there was a way back to the trams. Unfortunately, there wasn’t, so we gritted our teeth and pushed on. With as cool as some of the moments are on the tram experience, we were glad to be heading back to the theme park.

The Walking Dead Attraction is also going for Halloween Horror Nights, albeit with more monsters located within. The walk-through experience is a great look into the world of AMC’s The Walking Dead and guests will travel through several sets inspired by the series.

My biggest wish for Universal Studios Hollywood is that the workout a deal with Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling to open up The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for the Halloween event. It would be great to see Halloween theming in the area – perhaps even with Death Eater attacks!

Overall, this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event is a lot of fun, but make sure you purchase the more expensive front of the line ticket if you plan to visit on Friday or Saturday nights. If you don’t, you’ll not get the chance to experience everything. Halloween Horror Nights takes place various days throughout October – find ticket information and more at their official website.
