Blood Bowl II Legendary Edition Review

The Warhammer Universe is HUGE and they have been very smart about using the franchise in pretty much every way that can be imagined.  The IP’s use in strategy games is one of my favorite of these ways. My favorite Warhammer game I have ever played was Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, with its third person shooting style. I actually want to go back and play it right now but I don’t have it anymore…  Oh I feel like I am missing out right now not being able to wield that chainsword, but I digress.  In this mix of strategy games is one that disguises itself as a sporting title called Blood Bowl II – Legendary Edition. Blood Bowl is a miniatures board game released by Games Workshop back in 1986 that actually already had two computer games based on it – Blood Bowl in 1995 and Blood Bowl in 2009. Blood Bowl II was initially released in late 2015. The new Legendary Edition features all the DLC and enhancements in one box.

The first place you want to start playing is in the game’s Campaign Mode.  This will give players a series of goals to complete that helps show them around the field of battle play.  You start off as a human on a “Bad News Bears” sort of football team that dumps its coach and players then hires you to try to fix everything.  You make a contract with a company that sells bell polish which is a huge step down from the days of courting “Bloodwiser” and you don’t get near the funds you need to fill your roster.  It has you playing against an AI and I played on its standard difficulty setting of “Medium” since I had never played any other Blood Bowl title.

The graphics are well done, the commentators during the game are hilarious, and the video cuts to a cinematic style view when someone gets particularly clobbered – or the other team cheats in some way. These cinematic moments are funny and continue to feel fresh even when they happen over and over again.  Set at medium difficulty, the opposing team has certain styles of play and it  doesn’t take too long on the first few matches to see their patterns and work around them.  The hardest part are the dice rolls. If you do a battling move or if you try to run at the edge of your range it rolls for you. When running if no one is around there is a good chance that you can stop without falling on your face but I did one time run into the end zone where it did a roll and with no one around I fell down and the ball bounced a few squares away. The dice rolls are a way of keeping its RPG roots alive and adding chance to the game.

Blood Bowl II: Legendary Edition is, at its heart, a turn-based strategy game.  You get a turn and you decide where your characters move across square spaces on the field within their range of movement.  If they encounter an enemy or try to pick up the ball it gives you a percentage of chance that you will complete the task.  So, say you have one of your faster runners and he has to pass to a much slower lineman.  It might say you have a 68% of accomplishing that then when you do it the computer rolls the dice for you.  Now if you are naturally and notoriously bad at rolls in life like me you will fall on your face, get knocked out or possibly killed!  It can be pretty funny when you manage to get past all the blockers then trip over you own two feet.  And it shows a video replay of you face eating the turf.  Every role is done with virtual six-sided dice, some rolls using more or less dice depending on the situation.

The higher you get in the campaign the more interesting skills you can get for your players and upgrades to your stadium that help your team.  It’s all the little tips and such from the campaign that will give you an edge if you play other players.  You can start friendly games where it looks for a local player which means lower ping to play or you can invite a friend to play.  You can also create your own league where you play against AI through a whole season using a team you built yourself. Or, you can play Multiplayer where you search for an existing multiplayer league and join in.  It gives you different options and, let’s face it, while an AI can be easier or harder than a human opponent, it seldom thinks the same.

Blood Bowl II: Legendary Edition is the base Blood Bowl II game, Blood Bowl II Expansion, and 8 more race packs all combined!  The result is a whole bunch of different races you can mix together in some modes, plenty of stadiums with different upgrades and add-ons, and even a Challenge section where you have to do something crazy like kill a Thrall or make improbable touchdowns.  One of the weirdest things I think is a new race that is composed of circus folk and a trained bear…  To say this game has no end is completely true since you can even start a single player mode Eternal League where you just ever level and learn across different campaign, leagues, challenges… FOREVER.  If you really want a laugh, get a friend who swears they hate turn-based strategy game and wait until they are completely engrossed to point out what they are playing.

Blood Bowl II Legendary Edition is one of the best games in the Warhammer franchise and Warhammer is one of the best gaming franchises in existence.  Blood Bowl II Legendary Edition is not only super-addictive, but it is also the best sports game I have ever played.  Time to get back to game before the commentators say any more bad things about me or my players….

Atomega Announcement Trailer

SAN FRANCISCO – September 11, 2017 – Today, Ubisoft® announced Atomega, a new online multiplayer FPS available on September 19, 2017 on Steam. Developed by Reflections, a Ubisoft studio, in the same small incubator which created Grow Home and Grow Up, Atomega was made with a creatively experimental mind-set, deliberately seeking to create unusual concepts which will surprise and delight players.

Atomega takes place at the very end of time where reality is rapidly dissolving. All that exists are Exoforms, super advanced post-biological lifeforms, masters of matter and energy and the last distant relative to man and machine. As the laws of physics slowly repeal, the Exoforms fight for fun and dominance, replaying the final moments of the universe in an arena at the edge of destruction.

The player must acquire mass, by peacefully collecting it or via firefights, to evolve his Exoform from the nimble Atom to the godlike Omega. Competing for mass, players engage in a frantic battle for supremacy through intense 10-minute rounds gathering up to 8 players. Acquiring mass also grants points and the player with the most points at the end of the round wins. It is a relentlessly competitive experience, an easy to pick-up but hard to master game, with a light-hearted tone echoing the personality of its small development team.

Atomega will be available digitally worldwide on Steam for $9.99 on September 19, 2017.

Transformers: Titans Return Second Chapter Images

September 11, 2017 – Hasbro, a global play and entertainment company, and Machinima, the premiere digital video programmer of gamer and fandom-focused content, are releasing the first images from the second chapter of the upcoming digital series, TRANSFORMERS: TITANS RETURN.  Continuing the massive worldwide interest in Transformers: Combiner Wars, TITAN RETURN debuts this November worldwide on Verizon’s mobile entertainment destination, go 90 – except in China, where it airs on Sohu.com. The series features 10 episodes at approximately 11 minutes per episode. Since launching the trilogy’s first installment of the digital series in August 2016, Transformers: Combiner Wars, has garnered more than 125 million global views on across a variety of digital platforms.

About Transformers: Titans Return

TITANS RETURN stars Peter Cullen, who originated the voice of Optimus Prime in the 1980s animated Transformers series and will be making his Prime Wars Trilogy debut in the upcoming installment as the voice of Optimus Prime. Cullen will be joined by a host of fan favorites including Judd Nelson, who is reprising his roles of Rodimus Prime and Hot Rod from the 1986 animated Transformers movie, Michael Dorn as Fortress Maximus, Wil Wheaton as Perceptor, Nolan North as Metroplex and Jason David Frank as Emissary.

They are joined by returning talent from Combiner Wars, including Abby Trott (Windblade), Jason Marnocha (Megatron), Frank Todaro (Starscream), Lana McKissack (Mistress of Flame), and DashieGames (Menasor), as well as a new set of influencers like MatPat (Computron), Rob Dyke (Devastator) and Tay Zonday (Chorus of the Primes).

Picking up right where the destruction of the Combiner Wars left off, TITANS RETURN takes the action of the Prime Wars Trilogy to new ‘heights,’ and features return appearances from many fan-favorite Transformers characters as well as introduces new Autobots and Decepticons. In the series, enormous Transformers called Titans are awakened and these massive characters bring massive problems. Trypticon, a gigantic lizard-like Transformer, rises to wreak havoc on Cybertron, while Windblade and a rag-tag team of Transformers must resurrect an ancient ally. Not all Transformers will survive, as beloved heroes are changed forever while others’ sparks are blown to oblivion. Like Combiner Wars, sophisticated storytelling reveals more than meets the eye for older audiences and kids of all ages when a sinister secret is discovered.

Redout Lightspeed Edition Review

Future racing has been popular since the F-Zero days and WipeOut closely followed suit with the space race hovering vehicles achieving speeds unheard of in more grounded vehicles titles. RedOut is a new addition to this league, closely resembling WipeOut with it’s slick looking vehicles on tight, hilly tracks with lots of turns and jumps.

The vehicles in RedOut take a lot of getting used to with handling, using both sticks, constant brakes, and a power-up which can be used during certain matches. The speed of the matches is what has a bit of a learning curve since you really need to be able to keep up with your opponents, not only while keeping your vehicle going as fast as possible while maneuvering through turns, but also keeping an eye on the pitch. Not only can dragging the walls take a toll on your ride but so can drag say if you were to be going uphill and not adjust the nose, as well as slow you down.

RedOut is definitely a pretty game to look at but it’s visuals are somewhat dated. The menu screens for picking your vehicles, colors, next race, etc, are rather dark and ugly with standard text font that look like it was accidentally leftover from testing, The vehicles look somewhat slick but not as clean cut as you’d expect a WipeOut challenger to be and the standard paintjobs that your locked to really don’t do much aesthetically.
The tracks are pretty but sometimes less is more. I found myself early on getting lost between what was oncoming turns and what was background, especially on tracks that have transparent roadways. It makes learning the tracks even harder when you’re trying to keep up with the competition and you mistake an off-to-the-side bit of graphic for turn and bury yourself into a wall losing energy and places / time.

The music during the races is actually pretty entertaining and fitting for the speed at which you’re traveling. Skipping the all-standard low beat techno that plague games like Rocket League, RedOut opts for a more heavy metal affair with pounding guitars the faster you speed down the track.

While fun, RedOut seems a bit old. It’s nothing that hasn’t been done before and if you enjoy WipeOut, there’s really nothing new here at all. If anything, it might be a step backwards for those diehard future speed racing titles. It can be entertaining at times but I felt overly frustrated with the races and the mean looking menus. Perhaps with a little more polish, this could have set a new level in these types of racing games but you wont find anything new here, unfortunately.
