Escape Room LA Announces The Cavern

11046859_424180594425685_8540565299582526605_n

Los Angeles (March, 2015) – Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Escape Room LA will launch an all-new live action room escape adventure with ‘The Cavern’ beginning March 25. Trapped hundreds of feet below the streets of downtown Los Angeles, participants will become explorers solving ancient clues and puzzles in order to escape from the cavern before their oxygen runs out. After the enormous success of their 1940s themed first room, ‘The Detective,’ Escape Room LA’s The Cavern promises to have participants holding their breath in anticipation.

The Cavern echoes an Indiana Jones movie where ancient sought-after artifacts become secondary to surviving the journey. Ten explorers join forces on this expedition in search of a lost civilization’s ancient treasure located hundreds of feet below the downtown LA city streets. After explorers enter the mysterious cavern, things suddenly take an unexpected turn as the mission for treasure turns into one of survival. The only way to make it back to the surface is to find ancient clues and solve the puzzles in order to escape.

“Our first Escape Room LA experience, The Detective, launched this past fall. It has become such a huge success, we knew we needed to offer up a second experience,” said John Hennessy, Race/LA & Escape Room LA Founder. “I think our escape rooms offer a truly unique and exciting experience where participants are not only engaged with each other while solving a series of puzzles and clues, but are also intimately involved in the story that we’ve created around the experience.”

From the creators of the hugely successful adventure race series, Race LA, Escape Room LA’s experiences challenge participating member’s mental skills and ability to work together towards a common goal. Unlike the company’s premiere CityRace experience, which takes place across the city, The Detective & The Cavern occur within a four walled space.

The Detective is open Wednesdays through Sundays
Beginning March 25th The Cavern will be open Tuesdays through Sundays

For tickets & more information on Escape Room LA, visit:
www.escaperoomla.com

Tickets are $30/person on weekdays and $35/person on weekends

The Detective
Escape Room LA’s theme harkens back to the era of a 1940’s detective agency rout with mystery. As the excited crowd enters the dimly lit room, members are greeted by various artifacts that at first glance have no rhyme or reason. Racing against the clock, they must figure out the answers and complete the tasks in order to solve clue all of which lead to finding the exit key. No lines to the outside world, participants have to work together as hastily as possible to get out.

Designed by Hollywood set designer, Jeff McLaughlin, the look of Escape Room LA comes from an award-winning and seasoned decorator. With a long list of work seen on productions at Fountain Theatre, the Colony, The Falcon as well as a series of films, television shows and even Lady Gaga’s “Judas” video, McLaughlin brings a unique look to the Escape Room experience.

About Escape Room LA
Escape Room LA is a division of Race/LA, founded in 2004 by John Hennessy. Inspired by the adventurous tasks of shows like The Amazing Race, Hennessy sought to bring the same level of excitement to one-day races throughout the Los Angeles area. Inspired by an escape room story he read in The New York Times about a game concept in Budapest, Hennessy’s excitement for the idea lead him to believe that Race/LA was the perfect organization to create a similar experience in Southern California.

Similar to a real-life video or adventure game, Escape Room LA immerses participants in a mysterious location with an equally mysterious series of tasks all of which must be solved in order to escape. Pieces to the puzzle fit together and little by little, the mystery of the room starts to unravel.

Team Alpha Recon Airsoft Interview

IMG_2803

Recently, I got to interview the guys at Team Alpha Recon – a well-known, Texas-based airsoft team making waves in the action sports community with their upcoming Op. Red Bear. I’d like to thank “Reaper” and “XL” from Team Alpha Recon for taking the time to answer our questions.

Q) Hey Reaper! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview. You are one of the co-founders of the Team Alpha Recon airsoft team. Could you tell us a bit about your team in general? How it came about, how long you have been a team, number of members, etc?

A) No problem, we are honored to be a part of it Jerry. XL and I met in mid-2013 when we first discovered “Milsim” and we became very interested in the unofficial sport. We began buying gear slowly as we gradually learned about big name brands. Shortly after a few training sessions, we created Team Alpha Recon; in the beginning it was very slow for us because we didn’t know about all the National Ops. We first attended a local operation called “Op. Gridwall” which is located at Tank’s Paintball in Richmond, TX. This is where we quickly became part of the community and started making a name for ourselves. A little over a year later, we have acquired over 20 teammates ranging from 14 – 45 years of age.

Q) There are probably as many ways to coordinate and organize an airsoft team as there are teams themselves. How does Team Alpha Recon organize itself – fire teams, etc?

A) Being such a big team we first separated the adults from the younger guys.We usually break up into two fire teams and rely on our comms; we do this so we can be at two places at once giving fore from two different angles. You become more of a threat that way.

IMG_20150316_002900

Q) Operating such a large team must come with some challenges. What kind of challenges, if any, do you encounter in keeping the team operating and everyone engaged?

A) Challenges you say? Definitely, you will always have small conflicts in a big group of guys. You don’t always know a player’s true personality until after a few times going out together. We’ve dealt with negative attitudes, guys not showing up to training, even an occasional argument between players. Being that we (XL and I) are both CO’s we have each other’s backs and handle any problem as a unit.

Q) How often does your team practice and train, and what kind of drills do you guys prefer?

A) We practice every Sunday when the weather allows us to. We like to do a lot of two man drills; it adds a whole other element to the drill. We study a lot of Haley Strategic doctrine so our drills tend to mimic theirs.

Q) Airsoft is definitely starting to become a multi-generational sport with players of nearly all ages participating. What is the age range of the players in Team Alpha Recon?

A) When we first began we started out as an adult only team with about 5 players. After getting some attention from the smaller ops, local juniors started asking if we could create a junior squad so that they could be apart of the team. So we did, our junior team consists of 14 – 17 years old and our adult team ranges in age from 18 – 45 years old. If you can operate, you can operate – age is just a number.

IMG_20150301_223901

Q) Does Team Alpha Recon have any sponsors you would like to plug now or perhaps pursue in the future?

A) First I’d like to give our partners at Watch Your Six Clothing a shout out. We started a partnership with them shortly after making our team. We help them sell their gear and they return the favor for us! We are currently sponsored by Tanks Paintball in Richmond, TX. That being said, we are not sponsored with a major airsoft-specific company. We have had opportunities with local shops in the past but nothing promising for the team. We are patiently waiting for the right companies to partner with. Some of the companies we would like to work with are: Valken, Evike, Arisoft GI, AMS, Elite Force, KWA, G&G and Emerson.

Q) How does Team Alpha Recon work its recruitment procedures? Do you guys host dedicated “open houses” or just keep your eyes on players you meet on the field?

A) We look for players that are as dedicated as we are and can afford to put time and effort into training and our team, the rest can be developed within training. We want the sport to grow so being new to airsoft doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not good, if you find that your friend is a little better than you, ask him to teach you anything simple that’ll help you. Those are the type of guys we are! We love to have fun and hang out but we do take our team seriously so you have to be very dedicated to be a part of TAR.

Q) Would you guys like to share any stories or anecdotes from your most memorable games or ops?

A) Well I’ll never forget the time we played a local team, who was supposed to be a pretty good and well known team. Outnumbered and not having the equipment like they did, we managed to win every round – most of the time without the single death of a teammate. After that game, we knew we could really compete in airsoft ops and take things to the next level.

Q) Now that we are at the start of the year, event hosts like American Milsim and Operation Lion Claws are both gearing up their new season. What are Team Alpha Recon’s next big games/ops coming up?

A) As of right now, we will be attending BB Wars at D14 in Dallas, Tx hosted by Airsoft GI; along with Broken Home 4, Iron claw 2 & the Reindeer game at the end of the year hosted by American Milsim.

IMG_20150301_230003

Q) Can you give us a rundown of your basic loadout? Any particular brands or types of guns, gear, etc you swear by and don’t leave home without?

A) Adult team – AOR 1 GEN 11 Emerson BDU’s (awesome fit and very operational). We run coyote tan gear and plate carriers but the rest is based on players preference. As of right now only the BDU’s and tan gear are a requirement. Weapons we run – M4,M14, SR25, G36c, R36k, etc. We only run BluFor weapons so that way if a teammate runs out of ammo, one of us can help out.

Q) What advice would you give players looking to start their own team?

A) If you want to start a team I’d say the first thing you should do is figure out exactly where you’d like your team to go. A plan or goal is vital to a team’s success. Always recruit guys that share the same passion you have for the sport – you’ll find out that half the guys that play show up whenever they want and aren’t very dedicated. Also, a team doesn’t necessarily have to be real big, a 5-7 man squad is perfect plus it’s easier to manage. So, good luck guys and I hope this ends up helping out!

Q) Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions, Reaper. Finally, is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Team Alpha Recon that we haven’t touched on already?

A) We would like people to know that we are hosting Op. Red Bear in Humble, TX this May 31st and hope to see you there! This sport means a lot to us and we will continue to help out the community as much as possible. Thank you so much for taking the time and remember, BANG BANG!!

Once again, we would like to say thank you to Reaper, XL, and the rest of Team Alpha Recon for taking the time to answer our questions!

Pillars of Eternity – Road to Eternity Part Two

pillars-of-eternity-2

IRVINE, Calif. — March 23, 2015 — Obsidian Entertainment and Paradox Interactive today released the second part of “Road to Eternity,” a behind-the-scenes documentary that follows the creation of Pillars of Eternity, the fan-funded role-playing game (RPG) for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs. Pillars of Eternity, which releases worldwide this Thursday, March 26, 2015, was funded over two years ago by more than 70 thousand backers, a process that is shown in this new chapter of the documentary. This portion reveals the sentiment and mindset at Obsidian as the weight of keeping their studio open was lifted – and immediately replaced by the pressure to live up to their backers’ expectations.

Pillars of Eternity is an RPG inspired by classic titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, which features an original world and game system that evokes and improves upon the traditional computer RPG experience. Funded via Kickstarter in late 2012, raising $4.5 million through both backer pledges on Kickstarter and Obsidian’s own website,Pillars of Eternity has been a project of passion both for the development team and for the loyal fans who have made it possible.

Legends of Eisenwald – A Preview (PC)

eisenwald-2

Legends of Eisenwald by Aterdux Enterainment is a role playing game that has a turn based strategy style combat system, set in the fictional land of Eisenwald. Legends of Eisenwald is yet another game that has received funding via a Kickstarter. Aterdux Entertainment was able to pull about $88,000 in their campaign, raising 167% of their original asking goal of $50,000. This game has since been released to Steam as an “Early Access Game” and has yet to be officially released, hence the “Preview” addition to the title of this article. Currently, Legends of Eisenwald feels much more complete then other Early Access Games that I have played, and I cannot wait to see what else lies in this games future.

Story

At the beginning of the game, you choose between three classes: The Knight, The Baroness, and The Mystic. The three classes are fairly generic with the Knight being a melee focused class, the Baroness being ranged, and the Mystic is the support class. The story will slightly change depending on what class you choose, so there is some replay value built into the game, but how much the changes really are, I have yet to see.

The world of Eisnewald is more like a historical rpg with supernatural elements then a high fantasy style game. The look and feel of the aesthetics is closer to Medieval Europe, with castles, villages, and churches dotting the landscape. Magic exists, but is more in the lines of alchemy or divination instead of wizards shooting fireballs from their fingertips. Eisenwald also has it’s share of supernatural creatures, but even these come straight out of medieval legends instead of what people usually attribute to the fantasy setting. Think more “Europe where the legends were true” instead of “Lord of the Rings”.

This setting is found in the story itself. The story is much more human inspired then divine. You will not receive quests from gods, or be tasked with saving the world. You will be more interested in eradicating the bandit menace from your land, or protecting your castle from an invading force from the fief next to you. For me, this worked really well. It gave the game a much more historical feeling then other games of its type. While you may not be reenacting historical battles from central Europe, it still gives you the feeling that this story may have actually happened. That is, until the Undead show up.

eisenwald-3

Game Play

Legends of Eisenwald is a role playing game, with a turn based strategy combat system. While in the overworld, you have access to a quest log, map, and army organizer. The map shows the entire map you are currently on, with toggles that allow you to focus on structures, armies, or other bits of information. The quest log is a standard functioning log, that keeps track of all of your quests. The army organizer opens up your current army and their inventory. You can also upgrade your troops here with promotions or, in the case of your hero, more skills and abilities.

The rpg elements allow you to outfit your army by hiring mercenaries, and then buying and selling gear that you find along the way either through combat or visiting markets. What really irritated me about the mercenary system, was the moment that I had spent hard earned gold outfitting my archer with the best equipment available, then discovering he left right before we set sail to follow another quest. The gold and the items are not returned to the hero, so you have to balance the need for well-equipped soldiers versus seeing your equipment and gold leave when your mercenaries decide not to follow you anymore. More mercenaries can be hired in various places along your travels, and generally fall into three categories; melee, ranged and support.

As I mentioned earlier, combat is a turn based system using hexagons to define the combat arena. Initiative determines who goes first, and your equipment will affect your initiative. You will have to balance out that heavy armor may protect you more, but you will not be going first in combat. Combat feels intuitive, with hover messages telling you what each maneuver will do, and how much damage each person will do to their target. Strategy comes into play by selecting your targets and choosing when to charge in to combat, or when to be more cautious. While it is turn based, each person gets a attack in melee during a turn. You will move your player into combat, and the target will get to take a shot at you. This does make combat feel much more realistic, for me, in a turn based system.

Legends of Eisenwald is not complete yet, so many of the features that the game is touting has yet to be implemented. Arterdux Entertainment is planning on adding in a campaign editor to allow players to create their own worlds, missions, and story lines. This will add a lot of replay value to Legends of Eisenwald, when it is finished.

eisenwald-1

Aesthetics

Legends of Eisenwald looks good, but won’t win any graphics awards. The art direction is firmly in the realm of “realistic medieval” when it comes to the design of the armor, weapons, buildings, and clothing that the inhabitants wear or live in. There isn’t any character customization, so get used to what your character looks like, though when your mercenaries start to level up, their overall look will change to match their new found skill level. Unfortunately, adding new armor or items to your character also does not change the look.

There is no voice acting for the Legends of Eisenwald, all the dialogue is completed through text boxes. The writing is pretty well done, I don’t remember any instances of broken English or strange sentence structure. The music is decent enough to sit in the background, but there was nothing memorable or catchy about it.

Final Thoughts

Legends of Eisenwald is shaping up to the a really good game. I feel that the story is strong and realistic for the time period, the characters have real motivations to do what they do, and the setting works for the type of game that the developers are aiming for. I feel that the game still feels a little incomplete and does not have enough features to be better than good, but it is still in development. More features, like the campaign editor, are promised to be heading our way. Overall, the Legends of Eisenwald is a good time for those that like rpgs set in Medieval Europe. I am looking forward to this game when it officially releases. Legends of Eisenwald is available now through Steam Early Access.
