Avernum: Escape From the Pit Review (PC)

I did not play the previous Avernum titles from developer Spiderweb Software, so I did not have a foundation of details about this game world going in to exploring it, but that did not seem to be required in order to understand the type of game I experienced here. I will start with the opinion that this game is probably not going to be for most younger generation (i.e. new) gamers, having not grown up with older RPG titles in the vein of Ultima or turn-based D&D titles. That being said, if you enjoy a more old-school approach to RPGs, one where meticulously plotting out each of your characters actions in a tactical, slow paced grid, then this might just be the indie game for you.

The game uses text boxes with some images to unfold the story of the land you play in, and these can be quite lengthy – so I hope you enjoy reading. You essentially begin by selecting a party of 4 from pre-made classes (or for advanced users you can build your own). You then begin play, having been cast into the depths of the underworld along with countless others that have spoken out against or defied “The Empire”. A vast underground network of caverns and NPC towns dot the landscape, and very early on the player is set free to explore the land in any direction or path they choose. Each of the various towns the player comes across will have content for the player to explore (in the form of quests and job boards). In standard RPG fashion, you level up the members of your party and select new bonuses and acquire better gear.

The user interface was actually quite good (and much better than I expected from an indie title). It was easy to navigate and figure out in less than 10 minutes, given some RPG experience, and seemed pretty flawless and defect-free. Statistics and selected Traits (improvements selected from a list) were easy to manage, as was a log for quests and the paper dolls for managing gear. Any objects on the ground can be easily reviewed and picked up by simply standing on the item and opening the paper doll (a box displaying items on the ground with drag-and-drop functionality allows easy access at this point). Look and feel of the UI, and graphics in general, reminded me a lot of 90s RPGs, and took me back to a different time.

The audio in the game is relatively simple, with basic music at times, and sound effects when traveling based on the zone (dripping water when wandering a cavern, or crowd noises when exploring a city, for example). Some of these sounds would repeat ad-nauseum, but going into combat made up for this for me, with good attack noises for spells and weapons. All in all don’t expect anything on par with a full mainstream production game, but for this title it worked, and again served to reinforce a different era in gaming for me.

I would recommend this title for anyone looking to revisit turn-based RPG gaming nostalgia from their youth, but it will require more patience than modern RPGs (no hand holding here). I was initially feeling like the 20 dollar price tag for this game might be a bit high – but after playing through a good portion of the game, I believe the 20 dollars is fair, and worth the cost of admission for avid RPG enthusiasts that grew up on MUDs, D&D titles, and Ultima games.

Gas Guzzlers Combat Carnage Preview (PC/Open Beta)

So after being down for the count a couple weeks with first pneumonia then a bad cold I have been itching to get into a new game (ed. note: Glad to have you back!!).  When Gamespires announced their Open Beta of Gas Guzzlers Combat Carnage I was more than ready to put my Sentra in the garage and get behind the wheel of a dino hogging beast.  My first love was my small block Malibu Chevelle and the only thing that could have made her better would have been machine guns (figures California would ban such things right when I got her).  So you put some horses under a hood and ammo cases on a roof and there is a good chance I will have at least some love for the game.

Believe it or not, that was my first concern with Gas Guzzlers.  It put me in a Fat Ficho (imagine a Fiat).  Now if I were pulling a heist in it or driving through insanely narrow European streets I could still probably get behind it but the tracks provided are off road.  I understand the idea of starting small and working your way up I really do, but this vehicle doesn’t even begin to live up to the Gas Guzzlers title.  It is a slow, squirrely car that if you make the slightest mistake in you will lose the race.  The slightest mistake.  Your initial weapons are fairly ineffective as well so it comes down to racing a stock Fiat in dirt.  The beta luckily also includes a vehicle that looks straight out of the Fast and The Furious and this car handles much tighter plus the first weapons upgrade they give you to try is missiles so that it is possible to eliminate the competition as well as outrace them.  The vehicle is still designed more for street racing but it is such a leap above the Fat Ficho that I found myself in my Motor Zen place soon enough.

I do want to mention again that this game has just gone into Open Beta so any issue I might have with the game will probably be resolved by the time it is released or the ability to upgrade performance gear alone will probably help clear these issues when implemented.  These issues aside the graphics are excellent, the vehicle damage system looks terrific and the courses are well designed and engaging.  I even enjoy the “road kill” bonuses you get when you take out a chicken, rabbit or prairie dog that happen to wander onto the course because it is handled in a fun and cartoony way.

The only other nagging issue I had was the voice over.  Sounding straight from the mouth of an old school professional wrestler, the voice over is part commentator, part co-pilot and a bit confusing.  At times it seems to be making comments for you about a weapon you picked up for example, then other times it seems to be griefing you like if you hit a wall too hard the game actually said “That wasn’t too fuckin’ smart!” and another time said “Aw, shit!.”  The language seems to be raw simply to be raw and uses mature language regardless of whether you are doing well or bad, though the worse you do the more it seems to curse.  As an adult I heard far worse language when my dad was working on an engine but it generally wasn’t aimed at me.  When I don’t correct enough for a turn and drop back two places in a race I will probably be cursing enough without the game saying “son of a bitch!” or my still favorite “that wasn’t too fuckin’ smart” which I am probably already feeling.  It’s adult humor and meant to be funny but it almost feels like it could be abusive to a child.  I think the game may continue to tend toward this angle since it appears that it is being marketed in Europe as “Gas Guzzlers Shitload of Gas” as opposed to the U.S. “Gas Guzzlers Combat Carnage.”

Last Call:

I really look forward to reviewing and tearing up some tar on the final game.  Gas Guzzlers is in Open Beta which is still a very early process, heck at one point I had a collision error and found myself driving through the sky shooting my machine guns at clouds before the game corrected me back onto track.  All it does is give you a taste of the game and an idea in which direction they are going.  As a gorgeous, racing game with excellent tracks and fun weapons this game is headed in a great direction.  The only question is whether it wants to keep going in the mature direction solely for the purpose of being mature and edgy, which could in the end easily lose them a whole player base.  I’ll enjoy it either way, but it is not headed towards family entertainment.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations Quick Review (PS3)

Recently, we got the chance to take a look at Namco Bandai Games new Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations. Generations is developer CyberConnect2’s latest 3D fighting game set in the Naruto IP, and this is easily their most content-rich yet. With over 70 fighters to make use of, the game has more fighters than you can shake a stick at. It is almost obscene – in a good way. The single player game is well-designed, with a system of unlocking new parts of the story (and new fights) as you complete old ones. The stories are not really connected by any one thing, just excerpts from Naruto’s life as he conflicts with his antithesis, Sasuke. I have never been a master at fighting games, but found Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations to be very easy just to pick up and start fighting. While there were plenty of advanced maneuvers I could learn to exploit, the game was very player-friendly. Visually, the game looks like a 3D version of the manga series – crisp and pretty, with fluid character animations to boot.

Where some gamers might be disappointed with the game is that there is no real immersion into the Naruto IP. Sure, there are plenty of singleplayer stories to watch and that take part in but those are more like snippets from the overall adventure. Past Naruto games have featured some sort of interactive environment for players to explore, even if it didn’t do much, in between missions. While this is lacking in Generations, it makes up for it in character variety and the combat system, which feels a lot more streamlined than past entries.

Should you purchase this game? Yes! If you are a fan of fighting games in general or the Naruto series, you will not be disappointed. Even with the decreased immersion, there are a huge number of characters to unlock and fights are very satisying.

Looks like Sony Online Entertainment is bringing Darth Maul back complete with a cybernetic lower-half! Checkout the official press letter below:

Hi there,

A fallen enemy rises! The evil Darth Maul, long thought dead since his defeat by Obi-Wan Kenobi at the Battle of Naboo, has returned to wreak havoc during the Clone Wars! As Maul returns to menace the galaxy in the season four finale of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” he also appears in Sony Online Entertainment’s (SOE) Star Wars®: Clone Wars Adventures™.

In addition to seeing the vicious Sith Lord in action tonight on the Cartoon Network, Star Wars players can see him appear in-game in three different missions including:

A new stage in the ‘Dark Side Duel’ mini-game
A holoprojector that allows players to disguise themselves and turn their character into his image
An ultimate boss fight in the Ancient Sith Academy on the surface of Umbara

In order to experience the ultimate boss fight with Darth Maul, players must complete the Sinister Holocron collection to gain access into the ruined Academy where Maul has hidden and retreated to recover his strength, alongside his long-lost brother, Savage Opress. Once there, players should approach with caution as they must first battle Ancient Sith Training Droids and mad Dark Acolytes with dangerous Force mind tricks in order to confront Darth Maul himself in his lava-strewn lair. Gamers be warned: Opress will be close at hand throughout the entire mission!

Players who complete these missions will be given in-game rewards and can earn the new player title, “The Unyielding.”

cd Projekt RED Announces The Witcher 2 Dark Edition Shortages in Europe

Over one month before its premiere on the 17th of April,  The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Dark Edition has already been sold out in pre-orders in Europe. The Dark Edition of the game is the richest version of the award-winning RPG  for Xbox 360. CD Projekt RED studio has prepared a larger stock of this edition for their fans in Poland.  That’s why The Witcher’s homeland  remains the last European country, where the Dark Edition is still available.

“We are really pleased, that the Dark Edition was so well received by gamers.  We’re half way from the beginning of the pre-orders to the premiere and already European gamers bought all of the Dark Edition  copies. You can still buy the Enhanced Edition of the game, which is more than a standard edition of an Xbox game containing the game, official soundtrack, quest handbook and world map.” – said Michał Nowakowski , member of CD Projekt RED’s board.

The Dark Edition of the game apart from the Enhanced Edition contains an exclusive artbook, an additional making of DVD, a wolf-head Witcher medallion, 3 stickers  – all wrapped up in an beautiful box with an wolf head 3D print relief. You can watch the whole unboxing of the game here.

In The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings the player takes the role of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster slayer, a witcher. Entangled in the political turmoil that engulfed Temeria, Geralt helped quell the rebellion of the Order of the Flaming Rose. Soon after, he saved King Foltest’s life when the monarch was attacked by a witcher-like assassin.

The game features an intense, emotionally-charged, non-linear story in which every decision may lead to dire consequences. The complex plot is crisped with spectacular, brutal and tactical combat mechanics. All this is set in a deep, rich game world where ominous events shape the lives of entire populations while blood thirsty monsters rage about. The gorgeous environments of the game look astonishing thanks to CD Projekt RED’s in house engine – the REDengine. The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings Enhanced Edition is one of the best looking RPGs ever to be released for the Xbox 360.

The console edition will add about 4 hours of new content, when compared with the initial PC release of the game. All this will be set in never-seen before locations. This version of the game will include about 36 minutes of new animations and cinematics. One of these movies is a CG intro, directed by BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Tomasz Bagiński. The intro was viewed by over a million people in the first week after its premiere. All the additional content will be available for free download for current PC owners of the game.
