For Honor Review (PC)

For Honor has easily been one of the most highly anticipated games of the year – partly due to its smoothly rendered gameplay and beautifully decorating battlegrounds/environments.  Even more important, however, is that For Honor helps us settle one of the most pressing questions among armchair historians and gamers alike: Who would win in a fight between samurai, vikings, and medieval knights?

It should be noted early on in this review, that For Honor requires a pretty hefty footprint of hard drive space: 40 GBs!  Also, it isn’t a slouch in the performance requirements either, so be sure that your rig can handle it before you get the game.  Obviously, our console-playing brethren are all-set on this point because all they need is a decent internet connection – but, I digress.  The PC version, however, will allow you to boost up those beautiful graphics so much that you might just stop and watch all the flame and smoke, possibly at the expense of your own execution.

When it comes to battle there are two primary methods of melee combat, the first being a more tactical style of fighting.  In For Honor, this style of combat is toggled into with the left CTRL button and not unlocked from until the key is struck again or until one of you is dead.  In boss fights this proves to be particularly handy because boss strike and counter times can be very small so seeing it on the screen can really help.  It also helps you to time an execution mode on an enemy which adds points but more importantly looks bad ass.  This mode also helps you aim in battle which can be helpful so that you don’t miss an enemy and smack your weapon into a wall leaving your whole flank open.

The other style of fighting is more of a brawler or gorilla style where you are not locked onto the enemy and instead you just move in, try to make some strikes and move back out when you have taken too many blows or the style isn’t working and you need to go into tactical mode.  This kind of fighting is pretty handy when it comes to quick strikes and if one of your loaded skills is health regeneration this might give you a chance to get some distance and some healing in before another round.  This is also nice for keeping an eye on the enemy in case it suddenly becomes a two or three on one match, you might want to bug out.  It might be good to mention that among the different game difficulty settings, there is a “realistic” mode which means one death and that character is permanently gone.

There are the primary types of fighting styles but there are also individual upgrades that you can get depending on the group you fight for and the style of the fighter in question.  A lot of players out there just care about multiplayer gaming and that is totally fine – though if they do just that and not play the single player campaign, they will miss out on an interesting story of how three of the greatest fighting groups the world has ever known came to blows.

Multiplayer in interesting because it involves three fairly common types of gameplay modes, but the battles all serve a greater purpose.  First off you have a player versus player dueling mode which is pretty straightforward, or you can do player vs. AI duel which is nice since all the players can be allied.  On these environment is important to keep a quick eye, because a big burning cauldron for light can also “light up” a player and pushing someone towards a broken ledge railing might leave them a splat on the ground. While it is considered more honorable to let a player face just one other person instead of multiple players teaming up against another, honor can be hard to find and loose alliances will be formed, Hunger Games style.  There is a nice response to these alliances though: the revenge mode.  If two or more players are hitting you, it fills up a meter which, when full, can activate the revenge mode. This mode let’s you attack back viciously and may give you the chance to even the odds again!

Then there is Dominion multiplayer mode which is basically a control point game.  The captured control zones give you points much faster than slaughtering your enemy and when you capture a control point your army of pawns will move up onto it if it is the connected control point to the one they are already guarding.  Taking out their pawns also helps this process but fighting the other players and maintaining captured control points are key.  This was my favorite mode because if your teammate is down and not executed you can go and revive them.  It really feels like a mode that fosters good teamwork and if you aren’t the best at combat your team will still appreciate the best healer.  Obviously, you can’t heal a player with no head, so players that are executed cannot be healed.

One of the best things about the battles is that they aren’t just for the heck of it.  You can find armor, patterns, symbols, and tattoos to customize your character.  Most importantly though wins and losses go towards holding sections in a Risk type style game map.  At the end of the tournament time the one with the most lands and point is declared the winning faction.

Healing My Wounds:

For Honor is a beautiful game with amazing graphics and audio on the PC with well-balanced classes and carefully developed combat styles.  Players who just like to run and smash and bash may not find this to be the game for them. Players that like to mix a bit of strategy with their fighting game and are comfortable working their way slowly through levels will find For Honor a great play they keep going back to.

Watch Dogs 2 Online Experience Trailer

COLOGNE, GERMANY — August 17, 2016 Today at Gamescom, Ubisoft® unveiled the new Bounty Hunter mode for WATCH_DOGS® 2, the upcoming installment in the blockbuster WATCH_DOGS franchise. Bounty Hunter enriches the online component of WATCH_DOGS 2 which is seamlessly integrated with the single player experience.

A new approach to online play in WATCH_DOGS 2, the Bounty Hunter mode is tied to the police heat system and playable by two to four players. When a player creates too much chaos in the single player open world experience and is pursued by the police, the conflict may trigger a Bounty Hunter PVP event pitting the target against up to three rival hunter players who seamlessly join the pursuit and try to neutralize the target. Additionally, players can manually trigger a bounty on themselves using the Contacts app on Marcus’ in-game phone.

Another online mode players can experience is Hacking Invasion, a fan-favorite from the original WATCH_DOGS, the objective of this PVP mode is to download data from a target player while remaining undetected. Finally, Online Co-op allows two players to team up seamlessly and lets them explore the San Francisco Bay Area or participate in cooperative missions. Also in co-op, players can also participate in Hacking Invasion and Bounty Hunter activities, adding even more depth and excitement to their seamless online experience.

In WATCH_DOGS 2, hacking is the ultimate weapon, and players can not only hack into the city’s infrastructure, but also every person and any connected device they possess, to trigger unpredictable chains of events. With the ability to take control of drones, cars, cranes, security robots and much more at their disposal, players can choose whether to use stealth hacking to complete missions without killing a single enemy or go guns blazing for a more ferocious approach.

WATCH_DOGS 2 will release on November 15, 2016 for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and Windows PC. All PlayStation®4 players will be granted a 30-day exclusive access to all the post launch downloadable content.

NASCAR Heat Evolution to Give PC Gamers 40 Player Multiplayer

New Turkish Tank Coming to Armored Warfare in 2017

Amsterdam, The Netherlands – April 4, 2016 Global publisher My.com and Obsidian Entertainment are proud to announce that Armored Warfare will get Altay, the new Turkish Main Battle Tank. The mass production of this brand new tank has been announced today by Otokar, the manufacturer of this modern vehicle. Altay is the first Turkish-developed MBT since World War Two. Better Late Than Dead Review

I often just jump into games and start playing them without knowing all the much about them.  I feel if I get too much warning about a particular game, I might figure out the story too much, master the mechanics quicker than the average player and have general surprises spoiled for me.  If I know I am going to be reviewing a game I usually don’t even check out the trailer until afterwards to see if it adequately represented the game.

Better Late Than Dead however had been bouncing around since early alpha as a chat topic among players and reviewers and at first it was thought to be just an interesting take on a survival… maybe survival horror with the key for survival being more defensive than offensive.  Then along came the chance to play it and I went right at it, running around doing things maybe a bit faster than the average player from so many survival games on my shelf when suddenly I was literally getting bit in the rear-end by an alligator.  A few bites and I was Gator Chow and going for the last save point… which was grayed out… after hours of work.  Wait, Permadeath?  It’s got… ok that’s fine. I remember where just about everything was located so I will just head back and…  random drop rate and location?  So in a feature I don’t often use much these days here are the game’s features which will help you stay Better Late Than Dead.

Hands On:

Accept you will probably succumb to its menace a few times.  This is a simple act that will help you maintain your Zen while playing this survival which has it’s own set of rules that might not fit the normal world.  Things sitting around that look sharp and pointy will not be usable for it’s sharpness or pointy unless it shows up as such in the menu or after crafting.  So the first important thing to do in the game is run and find what you need for the different crafting recipes while watching for anything that moves or for the music to turn ominous.  Scary music like in a movie means even if you can’t see the danger it is nearby.

It’s really easy to start feel comfortable like you have a good idea what is around, these are really the times you need to be cautious.  Permadeath.  To be hours into the game and have permadeath hit you again… the save points are only for when you quit the game alive, they are no safety net whatsoever.  It is a great game to play when you have as few distractions as possible, no television in the background, no one else in the house telling you they just stocked something on *this* shelf of the fridge.  Think of it more as a jigsaw puzzle on a rickety TV tray that anyone else might bump over so you tuck it safely in the corner when others are around.

Now that the whole permadeath thing has been drilled into your head this is what you imagined Robinson Crusoe was like probably as a kid.  Only with body bags.  And cryptic notes about madness.  And instead of a shipwreck you bust out of a crate that was supposed to be your watery coffin.  Otherwise you need to find items and figure out how to craft them together.  Your inventory is limited but if you concentrate on dropped items such as a key or a knife first and only work on growing stuff like shaking trees for coconuts and mangos as needed then you are less likely to have a full inventory and find yourself dropping excess coconuts in weird places all over the islands.

This is a review and I have been mostly loading it with tips because this a fun game with a lot of mystery involved and permadeath can be a very cool aspect of a title if used properly which Better Late Than Dead does.  It is still being tooled a bit, go in feeling for a beta at this point and you will be more than happy with the results.  I haven’t had a second player join me for multiplayer yet which was introduced very recently so hasn’t fully caught on as the game probably will through word of mouth.  The game has good quality, a good concept and so far pretty good devlivery, just make sure that permadeath survival is your thing and you’ll be just fine.

Last Breath:

Better Late Than Dead is a fairly rare entry into the survival series with it’s permadeath and the interesting ways it tries to cause them which I don’t want to spoil here.  It still feels like it needs a bit of tooling and I think it is still getting it at press time but even without another coat of polish it is a fun and addictive game.

Crytek Releases New Cyber Horde Mode for Warface

Mortal Kombat X Review (Xbox One)

FINISH HIM! Few phrases are more recognizable in video game history than those two words. I remember when a video game came out in the arcades that all the players gathered around to see it. Weirdly, it was also the way kids might circle around and gawk at something that was taboo. They didn’t want their parents to know that their fighting games had just gone up a level – that if you learned the right combination of moves you could rip people’s heads off, pull hearts out or other gory things. They didn’t just fall over while you celebrated, they were destroyed in a beautiful gorefest usually reserved for slasher flicks. You didn’t just lose – you were punished. Everyone figured once the gore was discovered that the game would go away never to be seen again, and yet here we are so many years later with Mortal Kombat X, not only continuing the tradition of brutalities and fatalities but, also, adding depth to both the storyline and the gameplay.

Hands On:
First things first and has to be said: Mortal Kombat X has a very detailed and good story in its single player campaign mode. The fights have purpose with fairly long cinematic lead-ins tying together the world and characters with real plot. You aren’t just fighting in a Mortal Kombat tournament. I was stunned and hanging on every moment of the storyline, shushing people who walked through the room chatting. I am pretty sure that they assumed since the controller wasn’t in my hand I wasn’t playing a game – quite the opposite. Sure, some of the dialogue can be a little corny, intentionally for the most part because who could imagine Johnny Cage not having bad one-liners? Every character serves a purpose and every fight has its place in the story which allows players to follow the next generation of Kombatents.

Of course, all that can be skipped at the push of a button if all you want to do is maim, kill, and destroy – and there is nothing wrong with that. Afterall that is pretty much where the game began and, for some people, that’s all they want. For those folks there is still plenty of mayhem to be had and lots of playtime even if they skip the cutscenes or the single player section entirely. It is at it’s heart a two player gorefest even if the game now has a story to accompany it. There is a single player AI play mode to help hone your skills as well as the single player campaign and training grounds. Then it is off to play two player local like the old days or use this newfangled thing called “the Internet” and play folks from all over the world  in both ranked and un-ranked battles. Brutalities and Fatalities are unlocked through play and through the Krypt, a cemetery type locations where you bust headstones, open treasure chests or tear open cocooned bodies and egg sacs to unlock moves, art, music and, most importantly, characters for multiplayer mode.

When you first go online, you are asked to join a faction and, once you do, your every battle can help or hurt your faction in its struggle for world dominance. There are a handful of factions to choose from, each with special moves and there are even daily faction challenges. If you don’t like the one you join, you can change your mind at a later date.

Besides factions, there are tower matches that are traditional style matches and team matches where you can get together with your buddies and more. If all this sounds like a bit of a pain and more than you really want to keep track of, just pick online play and click through until you get a game.  Then you get to pick between three fighting styles for your character. While they have really tried to enrich the gameplay – in both single and multiplayer, at its heart it is still the fun gorefest you have come to love.

On the Xbox One the gore is particularly beautiful and graphic as are the environments behind the battles. Seeing through the skin as you shatter bones and pummel organs is quite satisfying and the backgrounds with corpses floating on giant waves and large bloody temples can be as stunning as well as wide open mountains and dense forests. I could definitely see this game being a leader in 3D gaming eventually, the terrific action and separation of foreground and background already almost give it a 3D effect.

Also, don’t worry if you are a button masher because you aren’t very good at remember fatalities, you can earn fight skip and easy fatality tokens in the Krypt to keep you progressing in the game and enjoying it even if you aren’t a combo savant.

FINISH IT!:
I could go on and on about Mortal Kombat X but really it comes down to this: Mortal Kombat X is the best game in the series and hopefully starts a new legacy of Mortal Kombat game depth that will continue on. When it comes to scoring a game I try to figure out what I could think of that could possibly improve the game… the only thing that even crosses my mind would be adding popular culture iconic characters to the mix, which is on the way when Jason and Predator join the mix in the Mortal Kombat Pass soon. I can’t wait to FIGHT!

We Review Etherium (PC)

I’ve been a player of real-time strategy games since the golden days of the genre. By golden era, I mean those titans like Warcraft, Command and Conquer, and the first StarCraft. For a while, there were tons of them – each with expansions and mods and the playtime seemed eternal. Those golden days have passed so that now you have to keep your eyes open for games that will keep you coming back for more. I was lucky when I got Etherium.

Description:
Etherium is a real-time strategy game set in a science-fiction universe, where three factions battle it out for a mysterious and rare resource known as ‘Etherium’.

Manage your resources, develop your base, and take command of infantry, tanks, aircraft, and gigantic colossi of war to battle not only your foes, but weather anomalies and mysterious secondary factions in richly strategic and original RTS gameplay. In the single player Conquest mode, develop your technological capabilities and expand your colonies over the furthest sectors of space, assembling a formidable armada.

Each of the three factions have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as different tactical command skills such as map exposure, climate control, or planetary bombardment. Define your own strategy, deciding to either fell your enemy by striking their mother-ship from the planet’s surface, or rapidly crushing their colonies. In multiplayer, team up or wage battle in all-out deathmatches with up to 4 players!

Hands On:
It doesn’t take an RTS expert, or even a big fan of the genre, to see that there are some similarities to a powerhouse RTS game already on the market. This may bother some people but as someone who has only seen that powerhouse add updates to StarCraft 2’s multiplayer maps recently (to be fair that is the game’s bread and butter via tournament play), I am quite happy to get my hands on some fresh sci-fi RTS fun in the same vein. Etherium’s three empires are quite a bit different both from each other and from those found in StarCraft 2, so each campaign feels completely fresh while only requiring the slightest adjustments to get used to the control set up.

Each side gets one main base and destroying the other team’s base is one of the main ways of winning the game. Destroying the enemy’s fleet above the surface is another method for winning. You take regions by capping a pillar with a colony or outpost and then, if it has an Etherium bubble on it, you can start mining it for money. There is a build time on structures but unit builds are almost immediate. They are considered fleet drops so they can only be dropped at locations with spaceports. Building those spaceports at colonies or outposts throughout the map can mean the difference between wining and losing the planet at hand. Turret placement can only be done within a controlled territory and the number of turrets are limited in each one so be careful positioning. There are a lot of things to consider for each faction and each map, figuring out the strengths and weaknesses is all part of the fun.

The game could definitely use more single player missions. Most folks will probably be playing the online maps and not be too concerned with this aspect but when I get frustrated with “zerging” or bad sportsmanship, I like to go back and do some single player stuff. This game has the potential for expansions or even just new single player maps for skirmishes that could really make this game have legs. Also, with new multiplayer maps, it could make Etherium a contender for ESL tournament use. The model is in place and the formula has already been proven – it just needs proper support and community.

The other drawback is a small aspect to this game that is turn-based space fighting that allows you to engage enemy fleets in space before planetary landing. It plays kind of like a mini game and does add a bit of variety to the game but didn’t really feel necessary or very engaging. If it winds up being your favorite part of the game I would recommend playing turn-based strategy rather than real time.

Last Call:
Etherium is a solid real time strategy game with engaging game mechanics. It has massive potential for becoming a hit, especially with the right support and nurturing over time. This is the game to watch and play with hopes that one day you can say you were playing it before anybody knew what it was.

Men Of War: Assault Squad 2 Review (PC)

Memorial Day is celebrated in all kinds of ways. Traditionally, mine involves playing marathon sessions of war video games. I think of the sacrifices generations have made for our liberties while fighting historic battles or historic enemies. This time my main game of the weekend was Men Of War: Assault Squad 2 which is a real time strategy game set during World War II and going through famous battles from the point of view of most of the nations involved.

Description:
Men of War: Assault Squad 2 features new single player style skirmish modes that take players from extreme tank combat to deadly sniper stealth missions. Commanders can now faceoff against opponents on various new multiplayer 1v1 – 4v4 maps. To truly bring the battles to life though there is the new 8v8 game mode designed for huge battles on spectacular maps.

Hands On:
The first thing I want to stress is how massive this game is for a real-time strategy game. The maps are large with multiple points to take and try to hold which makes for a slow strategic push and then there are so many maps over each nation’s campaign. My biggest advice is save often because you never know when you will make a bad move and watch dozens of your men die in seconds.

Gameplay involves various size units and types that push through great variations of objectives and enemies. One of my personal favorites was Normandy on the American side where they have established a beachhead and have to push through the town taking locations over and unlocking Rangers and Airborne along the way. They throw a lot of enemies at you and if you aren’t careful they will flank you or hit you with superior firepower. The armored vehicles come out of the woodwork and if you lose a location flag you fail the objective.

It is true that many of the maps are revamps from the first Assault Squad but the revamp has been so heavily done that the premise remains the same but the maps feel fresh. Even if the map is the same from the previous game you can play through differently time after time since it is your strategy that decides what units are used how. Will you try to zerg with infantry or take your time and build a wall of forces slowly pushing forward? Will you try to drop your Airborne at a remote location and try to take an objective or use them as quick reinforcements to drop at challenged objectives? It’s all up to you and can be different every time.

Men Of War: Assault Squad 2 takes the multiplayer aspect of real-time strategy games up and notch with matches that are 4v4 and 8v8! Usually these games are 2v2 and can be challenging to co-ordinate well enough to win, when you have 16 players on the same strategic battlefield with 65 possible maps and there is no set style or strategy you have to adjust to your team’s moves and 8 enemies out to get you. The single player is large with lots of re-playability but the multiplayer promises to never be close to the same match twice.

Add to all this Steam support and achievements, map editing, 3D model exporter and five different game modes and you easily have weeks or months of playtime without ever playing things the same twice.

Last Call:
The Men Of War franchise has a very solid reputation and Men Of War: Assault Squad 2 not only lives up to it but raises the bar for all real-time strategy games. If this is the style of game for you than this is a must play for you.

Arma3 Zeus DLC Trailer

Prague, Czech Republic, Thursday 13th February 2014 — Bohemia Interactive, creators of the award-winning Arma™ series and DayZ™, today announce their first planned DLC for Arma 3: Arma 3 Zeus. Made available in the second quarter of this year, the free Zeus DLC delivers a new form of multiplayer, in which players can take on the role of Game Master and curate the online battles of other players. The concept is further introduced in the DLC’s reveal trailer.

Improvisation is the ultimate key to success in Arma 3 Zeus. Inspired by popular tabletop games such as ‘Dungeons & Dragons’, a limited number of players can assume the role of Game Master, and influence the multiplayer experience of those with boots on the ground. Watching the battlefield from a bird’s-eye view, wielding an intuitive real-time editor, Zeus can create, manipulate or expand mission content to generate new stories and a flow of challenges. The result is incredibly dynamic, unscripted combat gameplay – and multiplayer sessions which are filled with unexpected, challenging, and creative events.

The Zeus multiplayer concept works across all familiar multiplayer game types, such as Team Deathmatch and Sector Control, where players can either work with or go up against Zeus. The most distinctive game type in Arma 3 Zeus, however, is ‘Zeus Game Master’. Here, Game Masters are entirely free to create objectives, spawn units, and steer players across Arma 3’s massive Altis and Stratis terrains.

On top of the diverse range of official Zeus scenarios that will be available, Arma 3 Zeus can also be implemented into player-created multiplayer scenarios.

“The best thing about Arma 3 Zeus is how naturally it fits within the game. Dynamic combat, massive islands, and editing features – it was all there. But now we’ve added an interface which gives players full control over the multiplayer experience”, said Zeus’ Design Lead Karel Moricky. “The Zeus system is pretty modular too, so community creators can easily use it in their missions. Or take it apart and turn into something completely different. There are no rules, only those you make yourself.”

While the reveal trailer already gives a taste of what to expect, the Arma 3 development team will also be hosting an official ‘Arma 3 Zeus Gameplay Reveal’ livestream this Saturday, February 15th, at 17:00 UTC. During the livestream, Zeus’ Design Lead Karel Moricky and Arma 3’s Creative Director Jay Crowe, alongside other core members of the Arma development team, will be giving a one-hour demonstration of how it is to play as Zeus and what it’s like to be one of Zeus’ subjects. The session will be streamed live from Bohemia Interactive’s HQ in Prague onto Arma 3’s Twitch.tv channel.
