Today Larian Studios revealed the eagerly awaited early access release date for the upcoming RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. During the “Panel From Hell” livestream, the studio announced they’re aiming for Sept. 30, 2020, as the date Steam PC and Stadia players will be able to jump into the first act of the game’s early access content. The panel also went in-depth about Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access content, as well as the journey Larian is soon embarking on with players.
The final part of the game’s now roughly six-minute CGI introduction revealed that players begin their journey in Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. Avernus featured heavily in the recently released D&D adventure module Descent Into Avernus, which saw the entire city of Elturel dragged into hell. The city was saved, but the aftermath of that cataclysmic event casts a shadow over the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. Players won’t just see the aftermath, however; captive aboard a nautiloid, they’ll take part in a daring escape as the ship jumps between planes of existence and is caught in the fury of the eternal, apocalyptic Blood War that rages across the hellscape. Avernus will be featured throughout the game, alongside many other locations to be announced later.
A highlight of the Panel From Hell was the “lobotomy scene,” a new gameplay snippet shown during the stream. As players attempt to seize control of the nautiloid, they find a corpse with its brain exposed. The brain itself seems to address the player, asking them to free it. At this point, players can decide to get their hands dirty, extracting the brain from the skull, which leads to the discovery that it’s not a brain at all, but rather a trapped Intellect Devourer. These creatures feed on the intelligence of sentient beings, taking over their victims’ bodies on behalf of their Mind Flayer masters.
Swen Vincke, Creative Director of Larian Studios, also showcased the scope of early access, giving details on how the size of Baldur’s Gate 3’s first act compares to Larian’s previous release, Divinity: Original Sin 2, when it launched in early access. Here are a few numbers that will emphasize the depth of Baldur’s Gate 3 in comparison to Divinity: Original Sin 2:
● Number of combat encounters: 22 in DOS2 EA vs. 80 in BG3 EA
● Number of English dialogue lines: 17,600 in DOS2 EA vs. 45,980 in BG3 EA
● Number of characters: 142 in DOS2 EA vs. 596 in BG3 EA
● Number of spells/actions: 69 in DOS2 EA vs. 146 in BG3 EA
Classes and races will be announced closer to September 30, but Larian today confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access will include five Origin characters (as well as player-customized characters), with more to be announced throughout early access. The five launch characters are: Astarion (Elf/Vampire Rogue), Gale (Human Wizard), Lae’zel (Githyanki Warrior), Shadowheart (Half-Elf Cleric), Wyll (Human Warlock).
Through gameplay footage, and audience interaction, Vincke demonstrated how the game allows players to discover different permutations in encounters and dialogue depending on the characters they play and the choices they make. This depth of reactivity means that even in early access, multiple playthroughs will lead to different outcomes and developments not only for players and their companions, but for the many NPCs they meet and the world around them, too. In simple terms, playing “good” and “evil” will offer wholly different experiences with many twists and turns (all performance-captured) that other players may never see, depending on their choices.
While the studio is working towards the September 30 release date, there is still plenty that needs doing before players can dive into the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 early access on PC via Steam and Google’s Stadia. For more information about the early access philosophy covered today in Larian’s stream, we recommend keeping up to date with the community updates. Today’s will cover heat maps and the topic of how player input is parsed into functional data to improve the game. Heavy stuff!
Culminating three years of painstaking development from a small team of industry veterans, and closing out an exhilarating six-month promotional campaign that united millions of like-minded fans around the globe, Mortal Shell releases worldwide digitally today on PS4, Xbox One, and the Epic Games Store.
To mark the arrival, developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack today reveal the haunting cinematic entitled “The Birth of Solomon”, created by film director Alessandro Pacciani whose credits include the cinematic trailer for Dark Souls 2 and the live action trailer for PUBG.
According to the developers, The Birth of Solomon depicts events which occur earlier in Mortal Shell’s timeline than the main story. Viewers are taken to witness a cataclysmic event at the Seat of Infinity before seeing the shell known as Solomon rise.
“We wanted to show a little more of Solomon,” said Cold Symmetry’s four co-founders – Andrew McLennan-Murray, Anton Gonzalez, Dmitry Parkin, and Vitaly Bulgarov – in a joint statement. “His birth is a turning point in the world’s history, and so it seemed fitting to announce the release of the game with a short depiction of this event.”
Kiron Ramdewar, Product Director at Playstack, added: “Since announcing Mortal Shell we have been astounded by players’ responses, from the 350,000 beta participants to the millions of views on our trailers. Mortal Shell has been a real labor of love and we cannot wait for players to get their hands on the game and explore the world of Fallgrim.”
Mortal Shell’s launch trailer comes soon after the announcement that a physical edition of the game is in production and due for release on October 2. The boxed version, featuring a fold-out poster and a softback artbook, will be available at all major participating retailers across North America and Europe.
Mortal Shell releases at $29.99 (€29.99 / £24.99) on the Epic Games Store, the PlayStation Store, and Xbox Games Store. The PC version comes to the Epic Games Store as a timed-exclusive. A Steam version will release later in 2021.
Warface Team is happy to announce the release of the latest PvE Raid, “Hydra”, available now as a free update for the Xbox One versions of the game. The PS4 version of the update will arrive later this week, and the Nintendo Switch version is scheduled to arrive this September.
After saving the colonists on Mars, the “Vega-5” squad and Agent Noda have been captured by Blackwood and are being held aboard “Hydra”, a mobile naval base. To save them, a special Warface unit – “Sigma-3” – has been deployed. The squad has reached the Blackwood base successfully but has been discovered and must defend their position.
PvE Raid “Hydra” features several new gameplay mechanics:
Unlike earlier raids, “Hydra” requires a smaller team of three players. This makes multiple playthroughs more diverse and interesting, as players have to compose new squad combinations from available characters to find the most effective way to fight back the enemy.
Unique location. “Hydra” features a new specially developed setting with unique assets in neutral colors that increase the readability of opponents on the map.
The new operation also brings the unique “Hydra” weapon collection to the game. With powerful weapons available for every character class, players can find a themed look for every occasion. The “Hydra” weapons can be acquired through extraordinary successes in the new raid.
The players must hunker down and defend a special terminal located at the center of the map, and repel 20 waves of Blackwood soldiers, cyborgs, and mini-bosses. For the final wave, the squad will face off against a powerful new boss.
“Hydra” features an all-new reward structure, unique to this PvE Raid. The rewards for victory increase with the number of enemy waves defeated.
Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV) unveiled today “One Giant Leap”, the first in a series of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Developer Diaries. Join Game Director Piers Jackson, Art Directors Chris Gregory and Jonathan Bottone, Principal Programmer Kay Ross and Lead Designer Gareth Hughes for a first contact with Odyssey’s atmospheric planets.
Exploration has always been at the core of the Elite Dangerous experience. With the highly anticipated arrival of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey in early 2021, this fundamental aspect of the game takes on a completely new dimension by introducing on-foot exploration of atmospheric planets. Players will leave the protection of their spaceships and venture out and discover the secrets and hazards those new worlds have to offer, experiencing the thrill of leaving their footprints over previously unexplored terrain.
The Elite Dangerous: Odyssey development team is lavishing great care and attention to detail in the authentic recreation of the ice and rocky planets players will be landing on. Surface pressure, volcanism, atmospheric composition and other geological agents all play a key part on the structure and natural features of each world, capriciously moulding their appearance and making them unique and distinctive.
One of the most stunning changes Elite Dangerous: Odyssey’s on-foot exploration will bring to the game is a completely new perception of scale. When disembarking from their spaceships, players will notice never seen before details, like alien vegetation. This exotic flora can be analysed to obtain genetic information from every new variant encountered, and players can profit from their discoveries by trading in the data.
Elite Dangerous: Odyssey launches in early 2021. Stay tuned for more Development Diaries in the near future, expanding on gameplay and combat from a first person perspective. For more information, follow Elite Dangerous on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Visit the Elite Dangerous official website at elitedangerous.com.
