Golem Arcana Now on Kickstarter

Kirkland, WA (Sept 10, 2013) Tabletop miniatures games are not known for their ease-of-play. The creators of BattleTech, MageKnights and HeroClix at Harebrained Schemes are hoping to change the way that miniatures board games are played with Golem Arcana. Today, the company started a new Kickstarter campaign for Golem Arcana, a digitally-enhanced miniatures game that eases play with pre-painted Golem figures and an app that can be downloaded to iOS and Android smartphones and tablets serving as the game’s rule book and referee all in one. By removing tabletop miniatures gaming’s long startup time, friction, and other clutter, Golem Arcana lets players focus on the fun of sitting around the table with friends and family playing a strategic miniatures game with a deep story and complex gameplay.

With Golem Arcana, Harebrained Schemes is introducing the next generation of tabletop miniatures games. Harebrained Schemes has created a TDI (tabletop digital interface) stylus that with one touch can identify a character and a region on the board, and via Bluetooth, display and track their characteristics and status on a mobile device through a mobile app. The stylus is the first seamless connection between the physical tabletop and the connected digital world, matching physical Golems on the board with virtual Golem Knights and Ancient Ones in the app. Though the Golem Arcana game and story are deep and sophisticated, this digital enhancement allows for the game to move quickly and makes it accessible to a wide audience – all of the game stats and record keeping is handled by the game’s TDI stylus and mobile App.

In addition to easing gameplay, Golem Arcana’s digital enhancement allows for tasks not usually found in tabletop gaming, such as;

· Saving a game at any time — the App knows where all the figures are and what their statuses are.
· Organized Play tournaments are much easier to keep track of because there is no need to manually record or file anything.
· Automatic uploaded game results — Local, regional, and global leaderboards are accurate and timely.
· Data flows down to the App — New scenarios can be added easily and change how the game plays. Scenarios can change victory conditions, the location of resources such as mana or relics, terrain effects, and more.

“Golem Arcana combines the Harebrained Schemes team’s two passions — digital video games and tabletop games,” said Jordan Weisman, founder of Harebrained Schemes. “We chose to bring this game to Kickstarter, because we love the personal connection we had with our players during the making of Shadowrun Returns. This direct connection and feedback motivates us, and helps us to make the best games possible. Over 600 people have already played Golem Arcana at GenCon and PAX this year and their honest reactions told us that Golem Arcana is an exciting leap forward in miniatures gaming.”

Golem Arcana’s game is expandable, as the size of the battles and the number of players increases with additional figures and modular playing boards. Players can go from small skirmishes to epic battles. A typical army would consist of three to six Golem figures, each with an associated Golem Knight, and one or more Ancient Ones to supply supernatural powers. Golems are represented on the game board with pre-painted figures, while the Golem Knights and Ancient Ones are presented in the game as digital characters within the mobile app. The app seamlessly handles the integration of physical and digital characters.

The initial two-player base game will include six fully-painted and assembled Golem figures, six heavy cardboard map tiles, the tabletop digital interface stylus, a quick start rules and lore book, a set of reference cards, and pair of dice. Expansion sets will add more figures, and game boards, allowing for additional players.

The year is 1765. Manage your crew, upgrade your ship, recruit new crew members and engage in massive real-time naval battles to become the most feared pirate in the Caribbean. Along the way, players will cross paths with Assassins and Templars, as well as famous historical figures including Blackbeard, Bellamy, and Hornigold.

Ubisoft Paris is developing a brand new mobile engine to bring groundbreaking 3D visuals to smartphones and tablets. Outlast Review (PC)

Outlast_03

In my gaming history, I have experienced a lot of unnerving video games. From cautiously sneaking about the first level of Rebellion’s 1999 Aliens vs. Predator, dodging Pyramid Head in Silent Hill, fighting Necromorphs in Dead Space, worried if my companion was infected in 2002’s The Thing video game, and an uncountable array of others. After all that I have played, however, none can come close to the sheer helplessness and claustrophobic atmosphere of Red Barrels new horror title, Outlast. Outlast puts you in the role of a journalist investigating strange occurrences at the Mount Massive Asylum.

Sneaking about the corridors of the asylum is an experience of nerve-frazzling terror. Your character has no weapons of any kind – his only piece of equipment being his night vision camcorder. Your “ammo” for this piece of equipment are AA batteries that you find throughout the game. Run out of battery power and “you’re gonna have a bad time”. Movement in Outlast is surprisingly smooth – whether you character is vaulting over an upside down desk or ducking under a cot to hide from a deranged inmate, the control scheme is simple and effective.

Speaking of inmates, the asylum is now home to a multitude of deranged and disfigured inmates which, while many are in a solitary state of insanity, others will try to inflict harm on you. There are also, larger, darker threats to your well being which we shall not spoil in this review.

Outlast_01

Where Outlast amps up its terror to stratospheric heights is in the overall atmosphere of the game. The levels are well-detailed, despite most being very dark, and all look like they are straight out of even Lovecraft’s worst nightmares. Additionally, the game makes great use of your character’s body. When you use Q and E to peek around corners, you can see your right or left hand on the door frame or wall. When you crouch down, you can see your legs and hand steadying yourself. This is also used to further the game’s horror-factor. Can’t say why, though, darn spoilers! 😉

Aside from its atmosphere, Outlast makes great use of visceral gore. This game is bloody as hell, end of story. Additionally, the audio design of Outlast is phenomenal. As you cower inside of a locker, praying that the “monster” inches from the vent holes doesn’t find you, your character whimpers and breathes heavily. It all adds up to an immersing horror experience worthy of praise.

Overall, Outlast is one of the scariest games you will play on your PC. I can only hope that Red Barrels has this one working on an Oculus VR dev kit! We are awarding Outlast a 5 out of 5 stars.

Lovecraftian-Horror Game U55 – End of the Line Hits Kickstarter

u55_shot_07_h_1920

Berlin, Germany – 9th September 2013, Today Effective Evolutions is pleased to announce a KickStarter looking for angel investors and backers to help fund the development of the first person horror-adventure U55 – END OF THE LINE for PC and next generation consoles.

U55 – END OF THE LINE faithfully recreates key Berlin locations, such as the various subway stations, areas of the government district and even the historical underground facilities. Utilising binaural sound effects, the game’s audio’s been especially designed for stereo headsets and with Oculus Rift support, the player will be deeply immersed into the Lovecraftian inspired world.

“For us, Lovecraft was one of the most important things to begin with“, states Malte M. Boettcher, U55’s creative director. “Until now, there have been few video games to cite his works in a direct way. We are going back to everything Lovecraft stands for, putting it into a contemporary video game. Longtime-fans will enjoy the references while newcomers will be gently introduced to one of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy/horror authors of all time. With U55-END OF THE LINE, we bring Lovecraft’s legacy to the modern-day urban setting of Berlin, serving horror fans and core gamers alike. We are sure that the mature audience will appreciate our efforts on a game echoing an intense experience. After all, the Great Old Ones must have seen fit that our Kickstarter project will be released just in time – on Lovecraft’s birthday“.

The sole focus of U55-END OF THE LINE is survival. Desperately seeking for help, the player traverses through Berlin’s widely ramified subway system. Armed only with your smartphone display as your only source of light, you have to push your way through the dark tunnels, looking for an exit. While confronting an malevolent force below ground, little does the player know that they‘ve become a cog in a mechanism that will inevitably change the fate of mankind once and for all.
