Cross Roads Escape Games The Fun House Review

We previously caught up with the folks from Cross Roads Escape Games when we reviewed their challenging and horror-filled escape room, “The Hex Room“. Recently, we got the chance to see them again and review their latest escape room challenge, “The Fun House”.

Themed less horror movie and more carnival fun house, The Fun House is a much less intense experience than their other escape room. A public game (meaning that you may play in groups with strangers) of 2 to 8 players, The Fun House features a number of brain-teasing challenges to sink your teeth into. Some were relatively easy to figure out, while others required more of a group effort. This is a terrific escape room for people new to the escape room experience in that, while providing challenge, it is not super-hard. Our group managed an escape in 45 minutes, whereas with The Hex Room we were down to mere seconds remaining on the clock. The biggest hint I can give would-be escapees is to communicate what you find as you go along. Talking with each other is so important and something that many people forget in the heat of the moment. You might uncover a clue that helps someone in an entirely different place of the escape room. Also, it can help to put any props or items that might help your group escape into one central location. That way they can be easily gone through for usefulness whenever necessary.

funhouse_small

Once again, Cross Roads Escape Games put a lot of effort into the design and construction of this new escape room, and that effort shows in spades. Everything just looks right and feels like it belongs in the environment – of course, unless it is not meant to! Also, it is deceptively sprawling – just when we thought we had the challenge figured out, a new area would present itself that needed to be explored and solved.

One thing to note is that, in talking with creative designer and co-owner Madison Rhoades, Cross Roads Escape Games periodically updates each escape room. This means that your first experience with them may not be indicative of a return visit, which might feature all-new challenges within. She alluded to The Hex Room being significantly altered and we would love to see it again with fresh eyes. Cross Roads Escape Games is scheduled to attend both the Scare LA and Midsummer Scream horror/Halloween conventions, so be sure to check out their presence on the convention floors.

Overall, The Fun House is a fun and rewarding escape room that will challenge your group and provide escape room players, new and old alike, an environment with high production value to get out of within the one hour time limit. Additionally, Cross Roads Escape Games may eventually install a third escape room challenge within their large warehouse space! While Rhoades would not divulge any hints on what its theme might be, I can’t wait to find out as they now have a proven track record of creating brilliant escape room challenges.

Tickets are a reasonable $32 dollars a person, and can be purchased at the Cross Road Escape Games booking page!

For the Love of Spock Gets Theatrical Release Date

Los Angeles, CA (June 2, 2016) — Gravitas Ventures has acquired worldwide rights to “For The Love of Spock.” The highly anticipated documentary is not only a tribute to the titular character and the actor who portrayed him but also serves as an homage to the dedicated fans who have adored and respected him for decades. The film premiered at the recent Tribeca Film Festival. It will arrive in U.S. theaters and on demand on September 9, 2016.

“For The Love Of Spock” celebrates the upcoming 50th Anniversary of Star Trek through a personal, intimate look at the life and career of Leonard Nimoy – and his alter ego Mr. Spock – as told by his son, Adam Nimoy, featuring never-before-seen home videos and family photos. Zachary Quinto, William Shatner, George Takei, J.J. Abrams, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Jim Parsons and more join in the celebration revealing why the world holds both Leonard Nimoy and his iconic character so dear and how Star Trek still affects the globe 50 years after it’s origin.

Adam Nimoy stated, “I’m very excited about the world wide release of this film which celebrates the life of my father Leonard Nimoy and his most iconic role. Gravitas approached us early on during production of ‘For The Love Of Spock’ and their enthusiasm and commitment to this project was evident from the start.”

“It’s no secret that ‘Star Trek’ is internationally beloved and has shown the world both on screen and off what it truly means to be a global community,” said Nolan Gallagher, Founder & CEO of Gravitas Ventures. “We are honored to be collaborating with Adam Nimoy and look forward to bringing this film to audiences everywhere during a monumental year in the Star Trek timeline.”

“For the Love of Spock” was embraced by more than 9500 Kickstarter backers, raising $662,640.00 which, at the time, broke the record for the most funded Kickstarter documentary.

“For the Love of Spock” was directed by Adam Nimoy with David Zappone as Executive Producer. Zappone, Kevin Layne and Joseph Kornbrodt of 455 Films at Paramount Studios are the producers, having all also produced the Star Trek-themed documentaries “The Captains,” “Get a Life!” and  “Chaos on the Bridge.”

The deal was negotiated by Nolan Gallagher for Gravitas Ventures and Douglas A. Lee on behalf of the filmmakers.

Operation Lionclaws XV After Action Report (Airsoft)

I sat there, wearing a full plate carrier and combat belt with an additional M72 LAW airsoft rocket launcher strapped to my back, crammed into the back of an M35 “Deuce and a half” transport truck along with 30 other players of the 2nd platoon, Alpha side QRF. The QRF, or “Quick Reaction Force”, was meant to be the mobile infantry of the Alpha side. Another transport pulled next to us, filling the covered truck bed with the acrid smell of diesel exhaust. With so many of us crammed up next to one another, one could barely see the opening of the canvas cover at the aft section of the truck. If I were claustrophobic, I might have had a panic attack at that moment, which seemed to be made of hours instead of a few minutes. Finally, the truck blasted off towards our objective and began what would be roughly six to seven hours of intense airsoft gameplay over the course of the day.

oplionclaws-xv-8

After disembarking from the transport, we found ourselves at the Alpha side HQ and our unit, 2nd platoon – squad 1 formed up for a quick briefing. Our squad leader conferred with the platoon commander then returned. We were to capture and hold the enemy helipad to gain points for our team. On our maps, it looked like it would be quite the push, so our squad prepared for the worst. “Game On” was called across the referee radios and squads began to deploy. As we were about to move out, the platoon leader came up and spoke with our squad leader – plans changed immediately and, before I knew it, we were running back to the transport and climbing into the cargo bed. As it turned out, we were instead going to use our mobile/mechanized ability for the best and deploy right near the enemy helipad to gain control of it. Our transport rocketed towards the objective and, upon reaching it, slammed on its brakes. We jumped out and took cover at the nearest building. We were accompanied by two or three other squads from the 2nd platoon  and, after a quick huddle, deployed into the helipad area.

The terrain was of the high desert variety, with scrub brush all around. In addition, the buildings comprising the AO are abandoned and rundown, with plenty of dangers lurking about. Broken glass, snakes, holes in multi-level floors, exposed nails. One must be ever-vigilant while at Operation Lionclaws. Our squad began pushing up around the helipad area, clearing the buildings to the West. The other two squads were covering buildings on the opposite side of the pad and the order was given to hold and guard. There was no enemy opposition at all – their helipad completely un-defended. Now we just had to hold the area for 20 minutes to simulate capturing/destroying it.

oplionclaws-xv-3

We started hearing other squads yelling out contacts and picked up our visual scanning. From the North, it looked like three enemy squads had gotten wise to our actions and began coming South to retake the helipad. Sticking to the buildings, getting close enough to fire on them was difficult, as airsoft guns don’t have the greatest range (most get around 100 to 150 feet, semi-accurately). The airsoft battle went on for about ten minutes and it looked like the enemy was no more.

Our squad, still posted up in some buildings, began to hear what sounded like a heavy vehicle drawing near. We took cover to stay out of sight and waited. I pulled out my rocket launcher and loaded up a foam rocket and a CO2 cartridge, which serves as propellant. The sound kept getting louder, but we were going to remain hidden for as long as possible to maintain the element of surprise. I drew up the launcher and aimed it in the direction of the large busted out window. An enemy Humvee crept by, its gunner manning a turret on top and scanning different directions. Then something really amazing happened – it kept driving, right out of the helipad area. They didn’t even know we were in control of it and must not have been on comms with the enemy force we took out. The helipad was ours, and we gained that objective for our team. This was all just in the first hour of play….

oplionclaws-xv-7

Operation Lionclaws XV was a physically demanding, intense, and fun airsoft game with so many ups and downs, plot-twists, etc that I could write for days about it. Joining the game isn’t cheap, with tickets costing $190 for players never having taken part in a Lionclaws event before, but it was well worth it for the amount of enjoyment everyone seemed to be having. Operation Lionclaws hosts a lot of games throughout the year all across the country – you can check them out at the official website of the game series.

The Dwarves Gameplay Trailer

fBREMEN, Germany (June 3, 2016) — The Dwarves is back and with a fine new gameplay trailer too, featuring the perfect soundtrack for tactical pause and play combat. Developer KING Art Games also has an update on the game’s timeline.

Beta is Now Live
Later today, the Beta starts for everyone who supported The Dwarves on its successful Kickstarter campaign last year (slacker backers can still get it from our store: http://tinyurl.com/TheDwarvesStore). KING Art Games has already received great feedback from the alpha, which has helped to massively improve The Dwarves even further. For example, the idea for an optional pause-function during the real-time combat came from the players. By widening the player base significantly through the Beta, KING Art Games is looking forward to receiving even more feedback, criticism and ideas from The Dwarves community.

Fall Release Window
The final release of The Dwarves will shift slightly from Summer to Fall 2016. Reason number one is to be able to implement all community feedback, whilst reason number two is so that there is a simultaneous release on PC and consoles, digitally and in traditional retail worldwide.

Development on The Dwarves is mostly complete: all characters are ready, the story is done, the voice-acting is finished, the orchestra and the chorus have performed their art and Girdlegard, the game’s world, shines in all its splendor. If you are eagerly awaiting The Dwarves’ release, you can already add it to your Steam wishlist: http://store.steampowered.com/app/403970

The Dwarves @ E3
The Dwarves are marching all the way across the ocean to present themselves to members of the press and YouTubers/streamers at E3.
