Jon Favreau to Write and Product New Live Action Star Wars Series

March 8, 2018 – Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series for Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform. Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars galaxy having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau is thrilled to be returning to the Star Wars galaxy: “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Disney’s collaborations with Favreau extend back a decade, when he helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe as director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 and as an executive producer of the Iron Man and Avengers films for Marvel Studios. For Disney, he directed and produced the massively successful The Jungle Book, which won an Academy Award for its groundbreaking visual effects. He is currently in production on Disney’s highly anticipated reimagining of The Lion King, set for release in 2019.

The untitled Star Wars live-action series does not yet have a release date.

Razer Electra V2 Analog Gaming Headset Review

The Razer Electra V2 analog gaming headset is Razer’s newest value-minded headset option. The slightly smaller brother to the Razer Electra V2 USB, the Electra V2 analog is ten dollars less. The Electra V2 analog gaming headset features a very Razer-familiar design of black and gunmetal grays highlighted with neon green lines. It fits right in with the rest of the Razer headset stable, despite being a lot less expensive than the rest of them. But, just because the Razer Electra V2 is cheaper than the rest of the Razer line, don’t think that it is not well-made. In fact, the Electra V2 features a uni-body aluminum frame and brushed aluminum headband that, while very light, is of solid construction.

An interesting note with the Razer Electra V2 analog is that, despite using a 3.5mm jack interface, it can output virtual surround sound using Razer’s “Razer Surround” software. This is Razer’s software solution and performs just as well as the USB virtual surround sound dongles you find in some other headphones of this category. The surround sound effect is great and, with the Electra V2’s 40mm drivers, provides good sound quality for those gamers looking to enjoy their favorite games.

Without the Razer Surround software, the Electra V2 analog will be used in stereo mode, which is normal for headsets with a single 3.5mm plug. Even in stereo mode, however, the Electra V2 sounds good and you will definitely have no problems enjoying your favorite games or movies while wearing it. The removable boom microphone does a decent job of picking up the user’s voice and will make communicating with your teammates easy. They will be able to understand you without picking up too much background noise. That being stated, I would not recommend the Razer Electra V2 analog microphone for something like podcasting or broadcasting but, for in-game chat, it’s great. Also of note is that the boom microphone is flexible so that you can align it where you want. Of course, the overall sound profile of the Razer Electra V2 is not quite as robust as more expensive headsets like the Razer Tiamat 7.1 or the ManO’War, but those are much more expensive behemoths that should not be directly compared to this $60 dollar audio slugger.

Controlling the Razer Electra V2 is fairly simple. The microphone just unplugs when needed and you’ll find a volume toggle as well as a mute slider on the back of the left ear cup. Speaking of ear cups, the ones on the Electra V2 are decent, although I did find that the sides of my head got sweaty after a short time and the top of my head got a bit sore after a couple hours. I would suggest if you have a bigger head, you check the Electra V2 out from a friend or at a retail store first.

Overall, the Razer Electra V2 analog is a really nice gaming headset for gamers not looking to spend an arm and a leg. Retailing for $59.99 at various online retailers as well as Razer’s own online store, the Electra V2 analog will fit your budget and provide you with good audio.

Dolmen to Debut at GDC

NATAL-RN, BRAZIL (MARCH 7, 2018– Brazil-based independent developer Massive Work Studio is thrilled to announce today that its premier Sci-Fi Third-Person Action-RPG DOLMEN will make its North American debut at GDC 2018 in San Francisco this month! Steeped in Cosmic Horror and set in the mold of the RPG “SoulsBorne” subgenre, DOLMEN will engross players in an otherworldly mystery where they must adapt to survive against harsh elements and nightmarish creatures.

DOLMEN casts players onto a hostile alien world known as Revion Prime, the location of the greatest recorded massacre in galactic history. Little more can be said about the far-off planet since its coordinates were lost to war. As neighbors, it has four gas giants and a nearby star called Nynfield. The corpses of those who lived there long ago orbit the planet — like a mass grave suspended in time. As the sole survivor of a crew of human astronauts, pulled from charted space and abducted into a distant future, you awake below the planet’s surface with no supplies. Being alone on Revion Prime is like having been forgotten by life itself. With no answers as to how you got there, or what happened to your crew, your journey begins in the dark.

The key to survival in DOLMEN is adaptation and exploration. All gear must be harvested from the finite resources available on the planet. Craft armor, weapon upgrades and consumables as you try to survive, and power your space suit with Reactors to gain new attributes. The many kinds of eldritch horrors and abominable beings that populate the planet react dynamically and differently when attacked. By gaining experience, level up your character to fit your playstyle and improve your chances of survival. But don’t forget to stock your base or risk losing it all. Revion Prime is unforgiving; you’ll learn that the hard way.

“Since the beginning, our motto has been ‘work, work and work,” said Pedro Bastos, Producer at Massive Work Studio. “We have dedicated over a year of our lives to pour every bit of passion we have into developing DOLMEN to the point where we feel our efforts have been successful. We very much look forward to sharing it with fans of Sci-Fi horror and intense Action-RPGs at GDC!”

DOLMEN’s Key Features:

Explore a Devastated, Darkly Beautiful Planet: Revion Prime is an alien world, with environments inspired by the work of macabre artists like H.R. Giger and H.P. Lovecraft, that challenges you to unearth its dark history by connecting fragments of the past.

Engage in Fast-Paced Dynamic Combat: Combat is intense and heavily based on timing, mixing melee-based attacks, Over-the-Shoulder (OTS) perspective long-range shooting and the use of defensive maneuvers such as dodging and blocking.

Adapt or Perish; Craft to Survive: Mankind, so we believe, has become a prevalent species due to its ability to endure and adapt to inhospitable environments. Build up your skills and scavenge what little resources are available to create items and customize your equipment. You’re going to need anything you can find to live to see another day.

Massive Work Studio will showcase DOLMEN for the first time in North America during GDC 2018 from March 21 – March 23, 2018, in the GDC Play area at Booth PL4146 (North Hall) in the Moscone Convention Center. Show attendees will get a first glimpse at the tragic history of Revion Prime and experience DOLMEN’s unique gameplay mechanics first-hand. DOLMEN is currently targeting an early 2019 release on Steam, with console versions planned for a later date.

The Council Rethinking Narrative Trailer

March 7, 2018 — Narrative Adventure game THE COUNCIL is set for the release of its first episode, THE MAD ONES, on March 13on PlayStation4, Xbox One and PC. Today, developers Big Bad Wolf give us insight into their reimagining of the narrative-adventure. In this video “Rethinking Narrative Adventure”, they explain how they innovated on the genre, twisting the classic formula with original mechanics, and their ambition of giving true weight to each and every one of the players’ decisions throughout the game.

Begin your journey with Louis de Richet on Lord Mortimer’s private island and try to discover your mother’s fate – before it’s too late. Joining you are a number of high profile guests, including Napoleon Bonaparte and President of the newly-formed United States of America, George Washington. The strange nature of this private reception goes beyond just the prestigious guests –Richet’s own mother has recently gone missing on the island, while each and every one of the colorful cast seems to have their own hidden agendas.

In a new twist for the genre, the core of THE COUNCIL’ gameplay comes from manipulating and maneuvering through character encounters using the unique Social Influence system. During confrontations, skills and limited resources can be used to gain the upper hand and achieve the desired outcome. Players will be rewarded for their knowledge of each character’s psychological vulnerabilities and immunities, as well as their preparations made during prior exploration and investigation. Failing an encounter does not mean ‘game over’, and no action can be taken back. The consequences are permanent and may result in persistent physical disfigurements or mental traits that help or hinder the rest of the player’s adventure.

Richet’s numerous skills can be developed to align with your chosen approach to the adventure. Solve issues with diplomacy, delve into occultism to expand your historical and scientific knowledge, or play detective and see what others do not perceive. Your skillswill have uses that extend far beyond your conversations with fellow guests. With 15 diverse skills to use and invest in, players are free to uncover THE COUNCIL’s mysteries how they see fit, with wildly varying consequences depending on their methods. The results will forever alter the life of Louis de Richet, of those around him, and shape history as we know it.

THE COUNCIL’s first episode, THE MAD ONES, arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC March 13. The complete season will include a total of five episodes, with new episodes releasing regularly in 2018.

Las Vegas Toy and Comic Convention 2018 Postmortem

The Las Vegas Toy and Comic Convention is a nice little con that can be counted on to have some decent names in a fairly intimate setting.  Last year, it took place at the Orleans Arena and, though a bit less intimate, it enabled them to invite a lot more vendors and celebrities.  This year, the convention went in the other direction with a smaller venue at the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino in, as one would guess from the name, Las Vegas, NV.

Despite being a little smaller than last year, I had a wonderful conversation and with horror legend and animal rights proponent Linda Blair! I got to chat quite a while with Thomas Estrada of Disney Animation fame and, if you wanted, you could get the autographs of Jango Fett, young Boba Fett, and adult Boba Fett all in one room! That’s a lot of Fett!  “Booker T” of wrestling fame was hard to catch but made appearances and Mike Quinn, who did puppeteer work on multiple Star Wars movies, was seen regularly talking with fans.  Two of my favorite local charity groups Viva Wonder Woman and Critical Care Comics were there too getting some good word out about helping others. I got some issues of Garbage Pail Kids the comic signed and some of my Garbage Pail Kids figures signed.  I also bought Joe Simko’s The Sweet Rot kids book series to give a read when I get a chance.

I highly recommend going to the Las Vegas Toy And Comic Convention no matter where it is held it is an absolutely great time and insanely reasonable door cost (psst buy in advance, you won’t regret it).

They Remain – A Review (Film)

And now for something completely different from me: A film review!  For my first foray into cinema review, we have “They Remain”, a suspense-horror movie by Philip Gelatt, starring William Jackson Harper and Rebecca Henderson.  “They Remain” is the second film directed by Philip Gelatt, and is based on the novella -30- by Laird Barron.  This film has been released on a limited basis, and I was given a link to the film on Vimeo for review.

Story

“They Remain” follows two scientists, Keith (William Jackson Harper) and Jessica (Rebecca Henderson), who are tasked to investigate a wooded area that was the campsite of a cult that participated in human sacrifice and murder.  Keith and Jessica are dispatched to the forest by a corporation, intent on discovering how the animal ecosystem of the area either helped instigate the cult’s behavior, or how the ecosystem was affected by it.  The pair discover later, that the site they are camping on was also home to a criminal investigation team that was sent to the area to recover more human remains, however had to leave the site earlier than planned due to their team leader going crazy and attacking his teammates.

Jessica and Keith continue their investigation of the area, Keith heading out to plant cameras and recover samples while Jessica stays at base camp testing these samples for evidence.  As time goes on, Jessica begins to hear voices and knocks on the camp’s front door while Keith begins to have visions and dreams of the cult and their activities.  The two continue their investigation into the area’s ecosystems, while continuing to deal with these new developments.

“They Remain” is based off of a short story by Laird Barron, and it feels like it too.  The movie’s storyline comes off way too thin to hold up an hour and forty minute movie.  There are vast gaps in story telling where the characters are either sitting around in the forest, or just looking off into the distance.  This may be meant to build suspense and drama, but it made the movie way to slow and dull for me.  This was an incredibly frustrating movie for me to watch, because I was interested in what was going on but felt like all the good stuff either happened 10 years before the actual movie, or was happening at other places in the forest while I was stuck watching these two.  When the pair begin discussing the “Pleasant Valley Massacre”, I remember thinking that I would rather be watching that movie, then this one.

Acting

Sometimes when the story of a film fails to really entertain, then the acting can save the entire project.  Sometimes the acting is so good or bad, the film is saved in the process.  Unfortunately, the actors in “They Remain” had to deal with characters and dialogue that was so boring and dull, that no actor could have saved this film.  Both William Jackson Harper and Rebecca Henderson just come off as dull and uninterested in the story.  Both actors show very little emotion and read their lines as if it is a to-do list.  I have not seen either actor in any other projects before, but I have heard that William Jackson Harper is fantastic in “The Good Place”.  I need to watch that show, just to see what William Jackson Harper is capable of, because “They Remain” did nothing to show of his talents.

Visuals

“They Remain” is a stunning looking film.  While I don’t know much about the technical terms of cinematography or camera placement in scenes, I was impressed with the visual aesthetics and shots within “They Remain”.  Scenes looked interesting, even if the dialogue and story was flat.  Camera angles made the scenes look good and the forest was an excellent backdrop for what little action the movie had to offer.  The best part of “They Remain” was how it looked.

Entertainment

So, I have watched many bad movies in my lifetime.  Some of these movies are even on my “Favorite Movie” list just because they were entertaining.  I can forgive a lot of stuff in a film, if it’s entertainment and worth my time to sit through.  “They Remain” wasn’t entertaining at all, not in the slightest.  The movie does begin slow and suspenseful, like most good suspense-horror movies do.  You begin to find out the plot of the story, and what the two characters are looking for.  The problem is that, this takes almost 45 minutes before anything even remotely spooky starts to happen on screen.  We are told about a lot of death and murder during the narrative, but nothing really happens to the characters for that long.  And when something does happen, it’s just Jessica telling Keith that she heard knocking on the front door last night and the camera didn’t pick up anything.

As the movie progresses, you keep waiting for something bigger to happen.  Are there still cult members walking around?  Is there something in the area that is causing the murders?  What is hunting the two scientists?  You get none of this, nothing!  The movie ultimately is the story of two scientists, investigating something cool, then go stir crazy because they can’t find anything cool.  That just did not work for me.

Final Thoughts

“They Remain” is a beautifully-filmed movie that consists of a slow, boring story and uninteresting characters, surrounded by something that might have been cool to watch but we never get to see.  “They Remain” is listed as a suspense-horror film and it fails in both regards.  I never felt any type of suspense, just boredom as the characters stare at trees, pretending to be freaked out about the behavior of wasps and ants.  There wasn’t a single moment of horror in “They Remain” for me, not one.  In the end, the material that the film was adapted from wasn’t enough to support a full length movie in it’s own right.  I would definitely skip this movie, if it’s showing near you.  “They Remain” was released March 2nd on a limited release run.
