Lord of the Rings Online 10th Anniversary Review

Back when Lord of The Rings Online first hit the scene, I was already a seasoned gamer with A LOT of years under my belt. I had played alpha and beta tests of games and knew the pitfalls of game-breaking bugs. I dabbled in the MMO for a while and eventually moved on to other titles. There were many gameplay issues to be balanced out and bugs to fix. The game wasn’t broken by any means, but did take some patience. Fast forward a decade and I had been actually thinking of checking back in on some of the MMOs I had reviewed over the years – then my Editor-in-Chief tells me LotRO is having an in-game 10 year anniversary celebration. So off I go, I make a new account and jump right in.  How has it changed since it first started a decade ago?

First thing I noticed is that there are four free races you can play and nine free classes (when the game first came out it was subscription-based). This gives you a great degree of choice in terms of what race/classes to play without spending a dime. If you choose, you can then you can spend a little money and pick up the man-to-bear shapeshifter called “Beorning”.  This is a race and class combo with its own pros and cons.  Also of note is that I had a displayed “recommended server” for my part of the world with an active population that were both friendly and helpful.  I cannot tell you how many times I go into a game and have a whole bunch of more experienced players give my n00b-butt grief.  One time I was working on a review while recovering from a nasty car accident and a player on my team didn’t like how “n00bish” I was and told me “I hope you get in a car accident”.  The Lord of the Rings Online was totally the opposite, other players offered to tell me the way things were laid out, the standard way to do things, shortcut keys to do it faster and just how I could have more fun at the game.  Right after I asked my questions I was even invited into fellowships to help me get started and learn the ropes.  Seldom is it that such a quick positive response comes out of a community to a new player.

I could have skipped up levels as that is something you can purchase with real money, but I would only really suggest that for a character further down the road because the world is so beautifully detailed. The areas so smoothed out after so many years of play that you won’t find glitches in quests or NPCs, all you have is a nicely developed playing experience.  I also wouldn’t recommend playing the Beorning right away, as I think you should have something to look forward running around with after you get other characters leveled up.

PVP is very different in LotRO and works a bit towards something you will want to put money into while playing. Free-To-Play players without VIP status play on the monster side of PVP doing quests and getting titles as they fight as different styles of monsters against the VIP (paying) player who plays as “the Moors” and are the free people fighting the monsters.  You don’t have to be a permanent VIP player to do these battles as the people side, you can pay that as you go with in game currency. It keeps things fun and interesting!

So how most of the Pay-To-Play works in LOtRO is by purchasing VIP status for one month, three months, six months, or even a whole year.  This VIP status opens up pretty much every aspect of the game to you, adds a couple dozen perks, give you free in-game money every month and every chapter and volume of the game are accessible to you during that time.  They seemed to understand that if they are going to charge a subscription of a normally Free-To-Play game it needed to feel like a subscription game like World of Warcraft.  The nice thing is if someone can’t afford the subscription they can still play and have a great and rewarding experience with their friends regardless if that friend is VIP or not.  It’s a smart move to maintain a player base.  You basically wind up with three tiers of player: the FTP player, the VIP but nothing else player, and the VIP and additional prestige items player.

The prestige item player will get the same pony as the normal VIP at that level but they might also buy a special steed with armor plating or a coloring they like or named after a special kingdom.  The VIP prestige player is the one that makes it so that the FTP can come in and enjoy the beauty of the game that they probably otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.  The March 2017 edition of Wired posted findings of a study that said on FTP games 2% of players are responsible for 48% of all revenue.  That guy who has the sweet looking mount and gorgeous armor makes it so that a FTP person can play buy paying the developer’s bills.  I wish more games were built on such a model so that friends could game together regardless of their disposable income.

The subscription money hasn’t gone to just keeping the lights on at Lord of The Rings Online, they are constantly releasing new content that tells rich stories while leveling players up to 95.  Maybe one of the best draws of all is you can play them furry-footed hobbits.

A Tale Still Being Told:

Lord of The Rings Online is still going strong and just getting better and richer with time.  I am so happy it had its 10th anniversary to pull me back into its shires and castles. This isn’t just a flash in the pan game for me.  This game has true FTP, VIP, and VIP prestige style play and that means I will stick around, continue with the journey of my characters and hopefully be writing the 20th anniversary review in another decade!

The Surge Gets an Official Launch Trailer

The Surge celebrates release next week with action-packed Launch Trailer. There’s just one weekend left before hardcore action-RPG The Surge releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 16! Battle through a world gone mad as Warren, on his first day of work at CREO – a megacorporation that has been hit by a devastating catastrophe. Today, prepare for The Surge’s brutal combat and dystopian setting with the action-packed Launch Trailer.

Balancing risk and reward is key during The Surge’s combat, as the unique loot system gives you greater control over what you claim from defeated enemies. In visceral combat individually target specific body parts, damaging them with a combination of vertical and horizontal attacks before slicing the part off entirely. What you dismember directly determines what piece of equipment you loot! When approaching an enemy, you face a difficult decision: do you target an unarmored body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?

To get the best loot you’ll need to take on the most difficult enemies, so positioning and speed are vital. Use your exo-enhanced dodges, blocks, ducks and jumps to avoid attacks while managing stamina, ensuring you’re always in the right place to strike the limb you want, or ready to avoid a potentially damning blow. The rules of combat apply to both you and your enemy: get hit in an unarmored limb, and you’ll go down faster. Take advantage of the enemy’s weaknesses while balancing your own, and you’ll walk away with their strengths!

Prepare for The Surge next week, releasing May 16, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and PC – preorder today and receive three exclusive in-game bonuses. Visit the official website for more info.

Surviving Mars Announced with Trailer

STOCKHOLM — May 12, 2017 – Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games that probe new themes every day, today revealed Surviving Mars, a new management strategy game coming to Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs. Surviving Mars is developed by Haemimont Games, an independent developer best known for titles such as Victor Vran and several games in the Tropico series. The new game challenges players to plan and build a functioning colony on Mars, balancing inhabitants’ basic survival needs with sanity and quality of life, all while dealing with the hostile environment of the red planet.

See what awaits in the game’s debut trailer, which is remarkably not set to the tune of “Life on Mars”:

“We feel that strategy and management games are at their best when they let the player experience the unique story being told by their decisions, and Surviving Mars is going to have that in a big way,” said Gabriel Dobrev, CEO of Haemimont Games. “Your colonists aren’t just working to improve production, they’re struggling to survive, and their conflicts and concerns are intense. Surviving Mars lets you understand what your colonists are dealing with on an individual level, and coming up with creative plans for those needs will be a new challenge for our fans.”

In Surviving Mars, players will lead a colonization effort on the surface of Mars, from the very first rovers and supply drops to the construction of suitable habitats for brave settlers from Earth. Every colonist will be vital to the mission as the colony struggles to gain a foothold where the environment is hostile and resources are scarce. With each success, however, players will gain the ability to expand further, and even establish a thriving society – and lead a new generation that has never known the Earth.

“We’ve wanted to work with Haemimont Games for years, and it looks like the stars have finally aligned,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “Expanding our management-strategy catalog has been something we’ve wanted to do for some time, after the successful launch of Cities: Skylines and building the player community around that genre. Finding a developer who shares our core design tenets is always gratifying, but with Haemimont and Surviving Mars we’re going to be giving our players a new experience that’s uniquely their own, and I’m looking forward to hearing the tales of triumph and catastrophe from our community.”

To take the first small step towards landing on Mars, players can sign up now for upcoming news and community activities around Surviving Mars. Eager settlers can find details here: http://www.survivingmars.com/

STOCKHOLM – May 12, 2017 Paradox Interactive today announced a partnership with Harebrained Schemes, the studio behind the Shadowrun Returns series, to publish BATTLETECH, the first turn-based tactical ‘Mech PC game in over 20 years. Set in the MechWarrior universe, the game is being led by Jordan Weisman, creator of BattleTech and MechWarrior, Mitch Gitelman, Producer of the MechCommander series, and Mike McCain, Creative Director of the Shadowrun series. BATTLETECH was successfully Kickstarted in November 2016, and now Paradox is providing a full loadout of publishing support in BATTLETECH’s march to launch.

MechWarriors and Mercenaries alike can see the first trailer for BATTLETECH here:

“We couldn’t miss the chance to work with Harebrained Schemes given how big of fans we are of their work on the Shadowrun Returns series. The opportunity to reintroduce our strategy-minded players to the tactical roots of the BattleTech universe makes this partnership even sweeter,” said Johan Sjöberg, Chief Product Officer of Paradox Interactive. “We are as excited about BATTLETECH as the early backers are, and we can’t wait to do our part to bring the game to market.”

“We at HBS have enormous respect for the long history of quality strategy games that Paradox has published and we are proud to have BATTLETECH become part of that history,” said Jordan Weisman, CEO of Harebrained Schemes. “We are confident in our ability to create a game worthy of the MechWarrior franchise’s legacy and are really excited to have Paradox’s expertise as a publisher to help us present BATTLETECH to the widest possible audience.”

Thanks to the generous support of the Kickstarter community, BATTLETECH will be the first turn-based tactical BattleTech game on PC in more than 20 years. Set in the year 3025, the universe is trapped in a cycle of perpetual war, fought by militarized noble houses utilizing huge, mechanized combat vehicles called BattleMechs. Players will take command of their own Mercenary outfit, struggling to stay afloat as they find themselves drawn into a bloody interstellar civil war. 5.11 Tactical XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant Review

5.11 Tactical has been in the tactical gear and apparel industries for many years and they have a great reputation among airsofters looking at quality gear that won’t completely break their budgets. One of the most popular products they sell to airsoft gamers is the MultiCam TDU Pant. For just under $80 dollars, this pant has some great durability and construction quality that stands up to rugged gameplay. It was with great excitement that I saw they had announced the line of XPRT tactical apparel at SHOT Show 2017.  With a much higher price point, I was curious as to how they would hold up and compare to their lesser-expensive counterparts. 5.11 Tactical sent over a pair and I was able to find out.

In terms of design and layout, the XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant is similar to its older sibling with some important deviations. First, the new XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant features 16 pockets! This time, you can even find pockets in the lower ankle areas of the pants! This pair of pants even features magnetic closures on the multiple cargo pockets so that you don’t end up making a bunch of noise like you could with Velcro or zippered pockets. The fabric is nice and durable, being very similar to the MultiCam TDU Pant, and I didn’t feel as though it would rip very easily – although, I should note that I did not purposely try and tear them just because they are an expensive pair of pants. The belt loops of the new XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant are nice and large to accommodate thicker rigger/gunner belts and the waistline of the pants features a nifty elastic adjustment system that enables the wearer to custom fit them to their particular dimensions. As an added bonus, there is a comfortable padding on the inside of the waistband to make wearing those thick belts a bit more comfortable.

The knee pad area of the XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant has also been updated a bit. It more easily fits 5.11 Tactical’s new ENDO.K knee pad, a semi-rigid foam pad which I highly recommend. I squeezed these pads into my older MultiCam TDU Pants and simply love them – however, the fit is somewhat awkward. The new pocket is much more accommodating and shaped to these knee pads. you can still fit 5.11 Tactical’s softer knee pads in there if you like, but I highly recommend switching over to the ENDO.K pads.

The older MultiCam TDU pants tended to be a bit tight in the crotch – especially when in a crouched position. If posted up for a time, this could be pretty uncomfortable. The best way to combat this problem was to buy a size larger pair of pants than you would normally need. This gave the crotch area more material for stretching, and worked fine, except that the rest of the garment was a bit looser than I would prefer. Thankfully, this issue is now longer anything to worry about with the XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant. 5.11 Tactical has replaced sections of the pants with a stretch fabric that moves with you and allows you to perform squatting and prone maneuvering without a problem.

[mks_col]

[mks_one_half]The Good

  • Rugged construction
  • Stretch fabric where needed
  • Lots of pocket space
  • Adjustable waistline
  • Fits ENDO.K knee pads very well

[/mks_one_half]

[mks_one_half]The Bad

  • Price point
  • Magnetic closures tend to snap closed when you might want them to stay open

[/mks_one_half]

[/mks_col]

Overall, the biggest problem with the 5.11 Tactical XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant is its price point. At $269.99 the pants are more expensive than a set of Crye Precision G3 combat pants. Now, is the XPRT MultiCam Tactical Pant great and amazing: YES! If you can afford these pants, you should. However, for most airsoft gamers out there, the price point is quite a bit more than what they will be comfortable with or used to paying for such an item.
