We Happy Few Alpha Preview

Describing a game as being “in alpha” can be extremely vague as it can represent such a wide scope of playable states.  I have played alphas where everything was so completed that they were just ironing out minor bugs and it was ready for market, most would consider this market beta but a perfectionist might call that alpha.  Others I have seen called alpha for over 2 years with almost zero developmental progression and none in sight.  I don’t mean to drone on (though I might have) about what entails an alpha but I feel I need to let the players, particularly all the Kickstarters who helped fund it know where the game is.

we-happy-few

The We Happy Few alpha build, which is pretty much the same folks saw at E3, is 50% mapped with no story development yet for the three characters we follow.  In other words it is a world where you can take in the landscape and bump around with a few of the NPCs.  One choice is made at the very beginning of the demo and that choice will make a difference on how much world you get to explore (hint: not much, you will get to choose again).  You get to do a few quests and that’s what they are labeled, you get quests and side quests to get things going but mostly it is setting you up to just experience the what they have created of the world.

we_happy_few_pinata

My first and vaguely disturbing thought of We Happy Few was that the game is an Orwellian 1984 Yellow Submarine.  Everyone is taking a drug called Joy, a nice little blend that makes you forget anything bad from the past and think the world is great.  So great that you want Technicolor all around you and mime paint on your face and nice clothes because shabby clothes denotes a “downer” mind and nobody wants to be or even see a downer.  If you fellow friends and townsfolk think you might have missed your Joy then ye shall be deemed a Downer and smacked upon the noggin until you can be dumped in the rubble and rambles with the other Downers.  There is no three strikes rule or anything (but then baseball never really took on the way cricket did across the pond).

At this point, the game is in an early enough alpha it could wind up like an entirely different game than I ran around in since we aren’t getting any of the story yet.  I welcome the idea of a psychedelic take on a New World Order as fiction when the reality of politics are what they are.  Give me my mime paint and bowler hat please. And don’t be a downer!

Super Toy Con Las Vegas Wrap Up And Gallery

Super Toy Con Las Vegas moved locations this year, which concerned more than a few attendees that going from a small convention space to a full sized arena might be too much.  What wound up being surprising was what a perfect fit it was, a little tight even the design of the arena space put every type of activity in it’s proper space.  There for celebrity autographs? Floor two to the right.  Autographs from cosplayers and the Garbage Pail Kids artists that were celebrating 30 years? Floor two to the left.  Floor one arena was dedicated to vendors with a curtained off end zoned with all the artists and creative vendors.

Things didn’t quite go as planned, attendance was hurt by the 50th Anniversary Star Trek Con also being in town and pulling just about everyone who every appeared in an episode into the con including Kirstie Alley and Clint Howard.  As for Super Toy Con Las Vegas they had some of their anchor names not make it which they tried to adjust for by having great group ups like all the bad guys from The Karate Kid, the main cast of the original Battlestar Galactica and Power Rangers.

Word needed to get out more about it, a lot of folks including in the comic book and toy community didn’t know about it which was a shame because it was a great even for such a great price.

15th Annual Star Trek Convention Las Vegas Wrap Up and Photo Gallery

It may have been the 15th Annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas but the real key is that it is the 50th anniversary of the original airing of the show and just about everyone who has ever appeared on it was there to celebrate all these years among the stars.

We all remember the primary cast but sometimes we forget that people like Kirstie Alley was in one of the movies and made her first convention appearance or that Ron Howard’s brother Clint Howard had a famous role so many years ago.  The wall between cast members and fans definitely came down as you walked around and saw famous actors asking for pictures with cosplayers.  People were just people as they talked about their experience in front of the camera and in front of the television, it was the way it should be.

there was also an amazing art gallery and terrific photo ops, the only problem I would say is that it was sold out so quickly and so expensively that it did limit who could go and even how much media was able to cover it.  Every minute was precious though as the 15th anniversary of the the convention would only come around once and more importantly the 50th anniversary of the original airings is such a milestone that few can beat.

Cities: Skylines – Natural Disasters Announcement Trailer

STOCKHOLM — Aug. 18, 2016 — Paradox Interactive, a publisher suffering from asteroid rage, today announced “Natural Disasters,” an expansion for Cities: Skylines, the best-selling city-building game from developer Colossal Order. The expansion features a catalog of catastrophes to challenge mayor-players everywhere, including planning with early warning systems and emergency routes, devastating and destructive disaster effects, and caring for the populace as they struggle to rebuild. Natural Disasters will also update Cities: Skylines with a new scenario editor and gameplay mode, allowing players to finally win – or lose – the game on their own terms.

Watch the Natural Disasters trailer for a glimpse at the expansion’s impact on the game:

Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters will add a series of city-destroying emergencies to Cities: Skylines, which can occur unexpectedly during the game – or be manually triggered by mayors seeking a challenge or some sort of gruesome, vindictive pleasure. Buildings and infrastructure will be destroyed, fire can spread across locations, and countless lives may be lost unless players implement the right emergency plans and responses and keep an ear on the new radio alert system. Fans of Cities: Skylines will have the chance to overcome everything from massive fires to meteor strikes, and allow their friends to do the same with a new Scenario Mode, where custom challenges can be designed and shared through Steam Workshop.

Natural Disasters will include:

  • Deep, Impactful Gameplay: Keep your city going through the devastation of several possible doomsday scenarios, from towering infernos to the day the sky exploded
With Great Power Comes Great Response Abilities: Plan for, and respond to, disasters using early warning systems, countermeasures, and new disaster responses such as helicopters and evacuations – finally, a Paradox game where “Comet Sighted” actually means something
  • Radio Saved the Video Game: Citizens can go Radio Ga-Ga with a new broadcast network, helping to rapidly spread evacuation warnings and emergency alerts – or simply relax to new in-game music stations
  • An Objectively Good Feature: Scenario Mode allows players to design custom game objectives, including custom starting cities, win conditions, time limits, and more – and share scenarios to Steam Workshop
  • Chirpocalypse Now: Heck yeah, new hats for Chirper

Natural Disasters will be available for Cities: Skylines players on Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs this winter.

The Bunker Experience Escape Room Review

We have been to a number of escape rooms, but The Bunker Experience in Pasadena, CA has the coolest setting of any of them we’ve been to thus far. Set in a 100 year old bank building basement, The Bunker Experience tasks its guests with getting out of the titular bunker and to a safe center somewhere in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. This old basement makes the perfect bunker and everything feels authentic to the world it is supposed to exist in. Guests may enter The Bunker Experience in groups of 2 to 12 people, with tickets costing $30 dollars each.

Story is essential to The Bunker Experience, but you may not be aware of it on your first go-through. The creator of The Bunker Experience originally intended the IP to take the form of a web series before it became an escape room, and this episodic mentality will persist much to the benefit of guests. They are planning to add new “chapters” or “episodes” as time goes on, allowing guests to continue the story of their survivor group throughout the wasteland. A lot of credit must be given to the actors populating The Bunker Experience. They are all in-character, complete with makeup applications and full costumes.

bunker1

One of the coolest things about The Bunker Experience is that it also features a short walk-through dark maze similar to a haunted house. What’s more, they are even adding a special Halloween event to the experience for the Fall season! We are not quite sure what this Halloween event will entail, but we were told it would be very scary and feature lots of monsters.

Despite its awesome location, story, and committed actors, The Bunker Experience is not the most challenging escape room we have encountered. You are given 45 minutes (instead of the usual hour) to escape from the bunker and make it to the safe zone and our group made it out with time to spare. The challenge isn’t easy by any means, but it also isn’t too hard. It makes for a great first escape room for someone who has never been to one before but can also offer enough challenge and ambiance for veteran escape room challengers. Also, the end of the experience wasn’t very well-defined. It took us a few seconds to realize what happened when we finished it. I hope they can denote “the end” a little more clearly in the future of this chapter of The Bunker Experience saga.

bunker3

Overall, The Bunker Experience is a lot of fun, and features a terrific environment for an escape room and maze. Even though the larger story was a bit lost on us because we were only looking at the very first part of the saga, the idea of adding more “chapters” to survive is pretty revolutionary in the escape room marketplace.

Also, I can’t wait to see how they amp up the terror with a haunted house/scare zone during the Halloween season! By the way, tickets for the Halloween event are also on sale now!

You can book your party’s escape at The Bunker Experience’s official website.

Watch Dogs 2 Online Experience Trailer

COLOGNE, GERMANY — August 17, 2016 Today at Gamescom, Ubisoft® unveiled the new Bounty Hunter mode for WATCH_DOGS® 2, the upcoming installment in the blockbuster WATCH_DOGS franchise. Bounty Hunter enriches the online component of WATCH_DOGS 2 which is seamlessly integrated with the single player experience.

A new approach to online play in WATCH_DOGS 2, the Bounty Hunter mode is tied to the police heat system and playable by two to four players. When a player creates too much chaos in the single player open world experience and is pursued by the police, the conflict may trigger a Bounty Hunter PVP event pitting the target against up to three rival hunter players who seamlessly join the pursuit and try to neutralize the target. Additionally, players can manually trigger a bounty on themselves using the Contacts app on Marcus’ in-game phone.

Another online mode players can experience is Hacking Invasion, a fan-favorite from the original WATCH_DOGS, the objective of this PVP mode is to download data from a target player while remaining undetected. Finally, Online Co-op allows two players to team up seamlessly and lets them explore the San Francisco Bay Area or participate in cooperative missions. Also in co-op, players can also participate in Hacking Invasion and Bounty Hunter activities, adding even more depth and excitement to their seamless online experience.

In WATCH_DOGS 2, hacking is the ultimate weapon, and players can not only hack into the city’s infrastructure, but also every person and any connected device they possess, to trigger unpredictable chains of events. With the ability to take control of drones, cars, cranes, security robots and much more at their disposal, players can choose whether to use stealth hacking to complete missions without killing a single enemy or go guns blazing for a more ferocious approach.

WATCH_DOGS 2 will release on November 15, 2016 for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and Windows PC. All PlayStation®4 players will be granted a 30-day exclusive access to all the post launch downloadable content.
