Of course, we also got to see the Season Two preview trailer for Star Wars Rebels as well as the second teaser trailer for Star Wars The Force Awakens! Overall, it was a total blast and I can’t wait for Star Wars Celebration to hit US shores again. In 2016, it looks like the convention is heading to jolly old London!

I Am Bread – A Review (PC)

i-am-bread-1

Bossa Studios UK makes some of the most unique games that I have played in a long time. I first became aware of the game studio by watching the boys over at Achievement Hunter doing a Let’s Play of Surgeon Simulator. I immediately picked up Surgeon Simulator and loved it. Michael and Gavin at Achievement Hunter then moved onto another Bossa Studios game, simply called I Am Bread. I knew immediately that I would have to get that game too, but my current work schedule has really prevented me from picking up games that I want. So I was incredibly happy when I Am Bread came down my review queue here at Gaming Shogun!

Story

I Am Bread is a simple game in concept, but much more complex in gameplay. You are a slice of bread and your objective is to become the perfect slice of toast by any means necessary. There is no character development in I Am Bread, because you are just a slice of bread. You are not here to save the world, save the princess, or save your family. Your only goal is to become a nice piece of toast, maybe with some marmalade on you. Life as bread is truly simple.

Gameplay

Here is where I Am Bread becomes quite interesting. What Bossa Studios did was create a very simple concept of a story with a simple objective for the player, but wrap all that in an extremely complex game that forces the player to make choices along the way as to how to become toast. You begin each level in a room as part of the loaf of bread that you are spawned from. With no indicators, arrows, or markers to point your path, you are to become toast while staying edible. So the first thing you must do is find something in the room that has the ability to toast you.

Once you have found a direction, then you have to start flopping your way to that object. You will press a certain button that is mapped to a corner of your slice of bread to grip a surface. You then use either the mouse or the thumbstick, depending on your control preference, to flick your slice of toast to move. You will continue to grip objects and surfaces and flick your stick until you reach your destination. The controls work just fine and are designed well, but they are designed to through both your brain and your hands into some sort of argument as to which button needs to be pressed at what time. Just playing by myself, I had a hard time getting my fingers to cooperate with what my brain was telling them, so I can’t imagine how the guys at Achievement Hunter managed to get through their video without murdering each other.

i-am-bread-2

As you move, you also have to worry about your grip. Bread apparently has some tenacious grip, but it isn’t unlimited. Once your grip meter runs out, gravity will take over and you will fall to the surface below. This can be very frustrating, especially if you have struggled to work the controls as you climb a series of boxes, just to run out of grip and fall. You can also use your grip to grab objects and fling them around the level. This becomes important in some stages that will require you to use items to light a gas grill or break a window.

You also have to worry about your edibility as you move about the stages. Edibility is shown as a progress bar that is filled at 100%. As you flop across something dirty or fall into water, your edibility will begin to drain. The dirtier the surface, the faster your edibility bar will disappear. You also have to worry about edibility when you are toasting yourself. Your goal is to hit 100% toast on both sides with nice and even coverage. Focus on one spot for too long, and you will begin to burn. Burning your self will lower your overall rating at the end of the stage.

When it is all over and you are toast, you will be graded on your progress. Your grade is based on your edibility at the end, the perfectness of your toasting, and the time in which you took to become toast. It’s tough enough to navigate the stage and find some way to become toast, but to hit that with a perfect score is just amazing.

I Am Bread has roughly eight stages to it, all centered around someone’s flat. You begin at the kitchen stage, move into the lounge, then off to the bathroom, and so on. I Am Bread also has seven game modes to play that unlock as you finish the story mode. You have your standard Free Mode, Rampage Mode which you destroy items for points, Bagel Race, Cheese Hunt, and Zero Gravity mode. You can also unlock different pieces of bread that have different characteristics and physics. The baguette only has two points of contact and is a beast at causing damage, while the bagel is round and does not have the same contact points that your standard slice does.

The gameplay is where I Am Bread shines. It will be a tough game for some of you out there, just getting your brain and hands to communicate quickly enough to keep your edibility up. You do have multiple paths to follow throughout the game, so how ever you want to become toast is up to you, as long as you keep your edibility up. Once that reaches 0%, then the game is over. It’s a simple concept of a game, executed brilliantly and is just a blast to play.

i-am-bread-3

Aesthetics

The visual aesthetics for I Am Bread provide a simple, yet fun to play in game world. Whomever lives in this flat is not keen on cleaning, as you have a ton of objects, obstacles, and hazards to move around. The developers tried to make each object look either clean or dirty, but not all. Some of the objects you won’t know will be hazardous to your edibility until you touch it. The graphics work well for the game, and will run on pretty much any PC that is working today, which is great.

The music really adds to the ambiance of the game. The music is mostly piano-based, but adds an upbeat tempo and vibe to the game experience. It is very hard to play I Am Bread without a smile on your face, due to both the absurdity of the game’s premise and the uplifting music that you listen to along the way to becoming toast.

Final Thoughts

I Am Bread is a must buy. It is a breath of fresh air in this age of dark realism and first person shooters. I Am Bread is no joke of a game, there are plenty of deep gameplay elements to be found within, under its simple and silly exterior. You can also play the game in a similar way as to what Achievement Hunter did, by splitting the control between two friends, that is if you think your friendship can last through the first level without a fist fight. I have played and enjoyed a lot of games this year, but this is the first game that I have reviewed that really made me smile and enjoy it this much. I Am Bread is available now through Steam.

Norse Foundry Aged Mithral 7 Piece RPG Metal Dice Set Review

dice-2

Norse Foundry makes all kinds of tabletop RPG related gear, mostly made of metal (hence the “Foundry”). They have a range of dice, coins, pins – even some velvet and satin dice bags. However, we had our eyes on their metal dice – the company’s claim to fame, and got to checkout their 7 piece “Aged Mithril” metal dice set. Our game of choice: the new Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition ruleset. The kind folks at Norse Foundry gave us a media rate on the dice and, before we knew it, they arrived on our doorstep. All that was left was to conjure up our RPG group and start slinging some metal. The Half-Orc Fighter in me roared in anticipation.

All the Norse Foundry 7 piece metal dice sets contain one D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and one percentile die. This is a good variety of dice to start with for most any RPG out there right now. You may have to roll one of the die more than once depending on the game, but that’s cool. We removed the dice from the clever box they arrived in and marveled at their sheer weight. They a lot heavier than standard, plastic dice, and the metal points are sharp and pointy – so be careful! Don’t be tempted to use them as caltrops or thrown weapons in a LARPing game as you could put an eye out. Just keep them on a table and everyone should escape in one piece. The craftsmanship of these dice is very impressive. Norse Foundry’s “Aged Mithril” collection has a tarnished, dulled-steel look about them and very much look like what a Fantasy gamer would think aged mithril would appear as.

dice-1

Most of the dice in this set are 16mm in size save for the D20, which is 22mm in width. These are just the right size for tabletop play and will match your more standard dice without issue. We began playing our D&D 5th ed. campaign and our party began a quest across an ancient desert in search of some old ruins. On the way, we encountered some giant fire ants. Being level one adventurers, this would surely prove challenging. I rolled initiative and was immediately disappointed as the D20 hit the wooden surface we played on then slid a short distance, not rolling at all. This would happen a lot throughout the evening as the dice were just too heavy for the light wooden tabletop we were playing on. I eventually went back to my run-of-the-mill, plastic dice as they readily bounced on the wooden table.

I thought this would be the end of my using the Norse Foundry metal dice until I corresponded with one of their craftsmen on the matter. He recommended that I pick up an RPG/TCG play mat to use as a rolling surface and explained that the two hard surfaces of the wood and the metal simply don’t play well together. I went on Amazon and picked up a basic play mat made from fabric. My RPG group then got together for a second gaming session a few weeks later. The results were like night and day – I highly recommend that you get a fabric or spongy play mat for use when rolling these metal dice. When used, the metal dice bounce a lot more and grip on the fabric, causing more randomness in the roll and a more natural feel to the plastic dice you have most likely been using all this time.

Aged_Mithiral_Loose

Overall, Norse Foundry is the place to go if you are in the market for metal dice. They are utterly unique and feature an exceptional build quality. Also, their prices are extremely competitive – especially if you select one of their 7 piece dice sets. Each 7 piece dice set retails for $34.99 and is available now at their official website. They have a variety of colors and surfaces – from the “Aged Mithril” we reviewed to the black and red “Nightmare” set to a brilliantly-shiny “Chainmail” set – as well as several more. Whatever your preference or style, chances are you will find something that speaks to you at their site.

Neverwinter on Xbox One Review

c19e53493bf66b9583efd3cb4af091ae

If you read our first review of Neverwinter on the PC you read as I droned on about how Neverwinter Nights was the closest I have ever experienced to tabletop RPG in a video game. I also mentioned that Neverwinter is a great game even if it didn’t live up to the legacy of its predecessor and is built on Perfect World Entertainment’s free-to-play game model which involves quite a bit of spamming. So the real question to be asked about Neverwinter on the Xbox One is if it comes across as just a port or a fully-developed game of its own? Should Monty Python’s “Spam” still be its theme song? And, most importantly, if you are going to put money into Neverwinter should you do it on the PC or the Xbox One? Let’s find out!

Storyline:
Once a bustling location, Neverwinter has faced a great many disasters in the past hundred years. Rule of the city remains unclear following the unfortunate demise of the last Lord of Neverwinter and factions still battle for dominance after the all-consuming Spellplague took a high toll on the population. Even Neverwinter’s dead are beginning to rise from their graves and march upon the city they once called home.

Hands On:
Neverwinter is a MMORPG very much in the vein of Lord of the Rings Online or The Secret World in the sense that it is a free-to-play game with micro-transactions for everything from mounts and companions – even experience point boosts. Based in the fantasy world of official Dungeons & Dragons, players can find lore and characters like from the tabletop game but in an online experience.

The game is pleasantly-loaded with nostalgia for anyone who grew up playing D&D and the voice acting, graphics, and sounds are terrific – especially on the Xbox One since, unlike the PC version, the quality of your visual and audio gameplay experience isn’t based on the performance of your graphics or sound cards. Your internet connection plays a huge factor in your experience, but that is always the case with MMORPGs.

NW_XboxOneBetaAnnounce_Screenshot3

You get to play a good variety of character classes as well as implement an immense variety of customization of the character – though I think there should have been more beard options. Everyone loves a good beard – especially on a female dwarf! Your starting armor looks the same but through finding new armor and the use of armor dyes you can quickly have a look all your own. You can even get some armor dyes just by leveling up your character. Other customization options can come in the form of your choice of NPC companions and mounts.

With a few exceptions, most of the NPC companions, mounts, and really spiffy armor will cost you real life money. This is a pretty standard thing to do nowadays, it is actually the business model for most games that either fail to maintain a subscription base (like LOTRO) or realize that, fiscally, this in-game purchase system ensures continued income to help maintain updates and expanding gameplay. As a player though it requires quite a bit of consideration because you can easily outspend the price of a standalone game and expansions through these micro-transactions. Then players must ask themselves just how much the micro-transactions add to the experience of the game and, in this case, which platform to purchase them on. If you own the game on the PC platform, your characters and purchases don’t transfer over to the Xbox One version of the game. Once you select a platform, you will probably have to stick with it unless you want to start all over again from the beginning.

PC Vs. Xbox One:
The PC versus console argument is decades old now. With next-generation consoles and the use of internet connectivity in game titles, this argument is slowly becoming moot and the lines of “which is better” blurred almost to the point of non-existence. For the most part, it depends on game choices and control scheme choices with each having pros and cons. But, what about when it is the same game?

I played Neverwinter A LOT when it came out on the PC – but, often, found I was splitting my time with other MMORPGs that I was already paying for or had invested RL money in. Also, I found that the game population didn’t do much in the way of roleplaying even though the option was very available. When playing a PC game, it is easy to type emotes and in-character dialogue. There are also a whole set of keys as well as mouse options on which to build the game controls.

In contrast, there is no roleplaying with other players that is possible on the Xbox One and you are very limited on what buttons you have, causing combo actions being necessary just to access menus. Even if you did want to roleplay as your character using your headset… well let’s just say the community would probably shun you a bit. Roleplaying is simply considered more of a PC thing than a console thing.

What I found interesting is that I think I enjoyed game battles more with the Xbox One – even if it is a little more difficult and definitely requires a learning curve. Consoles have a long and popular tradition of third-person action/shooter games and once you strip out the roleplaying layer of the game and make the menus functional, Neverwinter boils down to an open world third-person actioner.

Neverwinter-XBO-March-31-Ann

One downside is the spam announcements of who got a special item from a purchased lock box opening seems more severe the larger the screen you play on. When you play on a big screen, the letters look as big as your head and are several feet wide. You kinda get used to it but World of Warcraft players will still startle just about every time one is displayed because they are used to that being a battle warning rather than an advertisement for what could be yours!

It should be noted that, at the time of this review, I can’t compare the worth of which system the purchased items are more effective or enjoyable. I just can’t afford it right now. I plan to update this aspect at a future, more fiscally-sound time – but, I digress…

Last Call:
It really depends on what you want out of Neverwinter as to which version of the game you will like more. If you like the MMORPG style, then you should stick to the PC platform. If you like a third-person shooter/actioner experience, then the console is definitely the one for you. What is interesting is that the Xbox One version of Neverwinter doesn’t feel at all like a port, it feels like two separate games with the same storylines and quests. Personally, I will probably play the console version more because when I am at the computer I have a lot of MMORPG games for it to compete with. In contrast, I don’t have a lot of titles like Neverwinter on the XBox One. Maybe things will shift when real world money comes into play… I guess you will have to stay tuned and see!

Mordheim: City of the Damned Early Access Phase 5 Update

mordheim-17

April 17, 2015 — Rogue Factor’s turn-based tactical RPG adaptation of Games Workshop’s tabletop game has already received a huge amount of content since its release on Early Access, but as things shape up towards launch, Rogue Factor is back with more in Early Access Phase 5.

Major changes come to The Cult of the Possessed as they are now receiving a random mutation when leveling up, thus changing their physical appearance as well as modifying their statistics. This is what today’s screenshots illustrate! For example, the “thousand eyes” mutation not only gives a uniquely ocular aesthetic to the unit, but you’ll get +10 for initiative as well.

The long awaited Rune System is coming to the game, allowing players to enchant their weapons and equipment. You’ll be able to test the multiple possibilities offered by these enchantments alongside the previously introduced high-end gear. Speaking of cool gear, you’ll now see visual representation of the different armor sets of all units, thus making it easier to see their level of defense on the battlefield.

You’ll also find new features such as the in-game chat system, the combat log and many more tweaks and options coming straight from the open communication between Rogue Factor and the players.

On top of that, there’s one new unique map available and another procedural map from the merchant district to sink your teeth (or fangs) into.

Mordheim: City of the Damned will be 33% off starting from now, lasting until Monday.

More features will be added in the future, such as customization, consumable items, and Warband levelling. Be sure to check our Steam Page for more details about what’s coming next!

Star Wars Battlefront Star Wars Celebration Preview

Star Wars Battlefront _4-17_F

I was one of the fortunate, few media folks able to see the Star Wars Battlefront presentation yesterday at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim. I was even made to sign a strict NDA on the subject – one that has, thankfully, expired! The pre-alpha gameplay footage we saw was beautiful and very polished for being “pre-alpha”, so the final product should be even more staggering. The level followed some Rebel troopers as they fought Imperial forces on what was, presumably, the forest moon of Endor. It was basically an in-game version of what you saw in this morning’s game trailer release – really cool stuff.

After the in-game footage, we got to hear about some of the technology going into Star Wars Battlefront’s development. One of the big technology buzz words being associated with Star Wars Battlefront is “Photogrammetry”. This is a technique where an object is photographed from every conceivable position to calculate not only its three dimensional shape but also its texturing. The results are impressive – Most impressive. We got to see rotating video of an in-game Stormtrooper helmet, DL-44 heavy blaster pistol, and a few other things – each looked almost exactly like its real-world counterparts.

Star Wars Battlefront _4-17_D

Speaking of real-world counterparts, the people at LucasFilm invited the developers up to the museum at Skywalker Ranch. This is where the film company keeps all the awesome props, costumes, etc from their films. DICE had full access to use the real items from the movie in their video game via the Photogrammetry technique. Another thing that DICE’s development team did to make sure that Star Wars Battlefront looks incredible and realistic was to send their designers out to various locations around the world to study the landscapes, take photographs, etc. We saw images of DICE developers exploring a glacier, the Grand Canyon, and even a redwood forest. This attention to detail really shows in the screenshots you can see in the gallery at the bottom of this post. Star Wars Battlefront is due out on November 17, 2015 and I can’t wait to see more on this at future events. There are so many fun possibilities for mash-up battles with characters and battlefields in and out of chronology.

Star Wars Battlefront _ Battle of Jakku

The final Star Wars Battlefront surprise was also a bit of a tease into the second Star Wars teaser trailer which we saw yesterday. “The Battle of Yakku” is a free DLC pack which will be released on December 1, 2015 (pre-order customers) and December 8, 2015 (for non pre-order customers). This DLC will chronicle the battle which resulted in those downed starships seen in the film’s second teaser trailer (the desert landscape with the X-Wing and Star Destroyer husks). This news was also a cool little revelation for Star Wars fans as many thought that the desert world seen in the film teasers were the more familiar planet of Tattooine.

We would like to send huge thanks out to FortySeven PR’s Steve Hahnel and EA’s Melissa Ojeda for giving us this look into the game while at Star Wars Celebration. The PR team promised that we would be seeing a lot more of Star Wars Battlefront in the months leading up to its release.
