Our ScareLA 2015 Round-Up

scarela-2015-164 copy

Now in its third year, ScareLA has become quite the Southern California horror convention, with exhibitors ranging from haunted houses to special makeup effects vendors and a whole lot more – not to mention playing host to over 10,000 attendees! The producers behind ScareLA: Lora Ivanova, David Markland, Johanna Atilano, and Rick West have seemingly learned a great deal since the first ScareLA, which took place at “The Reef” in Los Angeles. While this location was great for their needs at the time, the team has moved ScareLA to the much larger Pasadena Convention Center. I love the Pasadena Convention Center – not only does it have a ton of floor space but it also has great parking as well as tasty eateries right across the street.

Mini-Haunts

scarela-2015-036 copy

Drunken Devil

Drunken Devil was an unknown to me this year before entering ScareLA. However, after having gone through their French Quarter themed mini-haunt, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this Fall. Their full haunted house is said to be located somewhere in the fashion district of Los Angeles.  One of the people manning their mini-haunt mentioned to me that they like to go for a traditional haunted house experience, focusing on scares rather than the trend of haunted events going “extreme” with full-contact and more. Good on them, as not everyone likes those extreme experiences. You can find the Drunken Devil on Facebook!

Curse of Devil Swamp

The Curse of Devil Swamp is a home haunt with tons of heart and some great scares. Their mini-haunt at ScareLA was a true testament to this with good set design and enthusiastic monsters. You can find the Curse of Devil Swamp on Facebook here.

Field of Screams

This was a crazy mini-haunt in the best sense of the word – so much so, in fact, that I completely forgot to take photos of the experience! Walking into what appeared to be a small church complete with altar, we were treated to some sort of demonic ritual performed by two monstrous nuns on some poor, unsuspecting Shemp. The pews in which we were seated were on motion platforms which rocked back and forth along with the incantations. Field of Screams is located at the Lake Elsinore Storm baseball team field in Lake Elsinore, CA. You can find the event on Facebook here.

scarela-2015-033 copy

Spooky Hollows Legends of the Swap

This mini-haunt had some great set decoration starting off with an eye-catching graveyard set in a swamp. The mini-haunt had several monsters within and some great lighting effects to go along with it. This mini-haunt also featured a great transition between what was supposed to be the swampy outdoors and an indoor set (a real feat as this was all constructed in a generic-looking convention space).  Their full haunted house is located in Van Nuys, CA but you can find them on Facebook right now.

Fear Station

The Fear Station mini-haunt easily featured the tallest facade to their attraction. Looking like an old, dilapidated wooden structure, guests were on a hunt to seek out a strange, terrifying creature. This mini-haunt featured actors, not just monsters, and I applaud their creating an actual storyline for the short experience. Last year, Fear Station was based in Stanton, CA but word has it that they are moving locations for 2015. We will update our horror column when we find out the new location. You can find them on Facebook here.

The Vault of Darkness

scarela-2015-010 copy

The Vault of Darkness was produced by Evil Twin Studios, the folks behind last year’s Raymond Hill Mortuary and the upcoming Ward13 haunted attraction. Unlike the mini-haunts at ScareLA, this was a walk-through experience showcasing various vendors and technology. Entering the vault, attendees were given a dim flashlight to light the path ahead. Unfortunately for them, this flashlight has a tendency to go out at the worse possible moments! Actually, this is all part of the show as there is some serious technological wizardry behind it. The flashlights just don’t go out when entering various parts of the vault but, also, change color to enhance the mood. The Vault of Darkness allowed us a look at cool props, a full anti-zombie military vehicle, crazy lighting and even shocking wall panels. It was a neat experience that I hop they bring back next year. Also, I hope more exhibitors take note of this experience and submit their wares for display as it is a great way to let guests see your products at work, in a scary environment.

The Decayed Brigade

scarela-2015-064 copy

The Decayed Brigade is a group of “sliders” who have worked, or are working, at various haunted attractions in Southern California. These sliders throw their bodies and slide across the ground on knee pads as a way of scaring people. This activity, in recent years, has become more of a sporting event, with haunted attraction guests cheering as monsters perform sliding stunts. That’s what the Decayed Brigade excels at. It’s always a pleasure to watch them perform. Their show this year seemed a bit more structured, which was good in that it was tightened up, but it also seemed to lose a bit of the spontaneity that it had in past years. Overall, still a great show to watch and we hope they return in 2016 (and I wish them all a speedy recovery as that stuff looks like it hurts)!

Panels

ScareLA has become such a Mecca for Southern California haunt-goers that the big events out there, Knott’s Scary Farm and Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights (as well as many others), even have their own panels where they get to announce stuff for the upcoming Fall season. Knott’s Scary Farm announced a new maze titled “The Dead of Winter”, the return of Special Ops: Infected, and a new stage show featuring Elvira. Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights announced “Halloween: Michael Myers Comes Home”, a new maze based on the classic John Carpenter film.

The “Making Monsters” panel returned for 2015, this time focusing on the art directors of various haunted attractions. Also new for 2015 was the amazing “Legend of Disneyland’s Hatbox Ghost” panel, which focused on the lore and history of the fabled Haunted Mansion resident.

Of course, there were a plethora of additional panels, these are just the ones that stand out in my mind as I type this up.

Education

Being that I was covering the convention on the show floor and in panel rooms, I didn’t get a chance to explore this facet of ScareLA. The convention hosts a huge number of classes and workshops devoted to various aspects of horror – from haunted house design and decoration to makeup effects tutorials. If I had more time, I would love to just sit-in on these workshops. You would be hard-pressed to find these classes anywhere else!

Screenings

haunters-the-movie-still

Another aspect to ScareLA (in case you haven’t figured it out by now, there is A LOT to do there) is its screening room. While I didn’t get a chance to attend any of the screenings personally, the list of showings was impressive. Not only were there short horror films like Nick Lines’ “It’s a Wonderful Knife” but, also, feature screenings such as “The Houses that October Built”, about a group of people looking for the most extreme haunts around the country and find more than they bargained for. Also in the line-up was a test screening of “Haunters The Movie”, a documentary about the people behind modern-day haunted attractions. I wish I got the chance to check that one out but, again, just didn’t have enough time.

Wrap-Up

Walking around the show floor, I was blown away by the number of vendors and exhibitors. I was even more blown away by how much empty space was still available on the show floor (that convention space is huge). While this meant there was a lot of breathing room, something not seen at most conventions these days, it also means they could, theoretically, pack in even more booths and experiences next year!

We had a great time at the 2015 edition of ScareLA and would like to thank the event’s producers for having us out again. We highly recommend this event for fans of Halloween, haunted attractions, and horror in general. Thanks to ScareLA, our appetites for the upcoming haunted attraction season have been whetted. The haunt season is about to begin, kiddies (insert diabolical cackling here)!

Cloudhead Games Blink Locomotion Technology Claims VR Nausea Obsolete

The Gallery: Call of the Starseed

The Gallery: Call of the Starseed

August 11, 2015 – The advent of virtual reality is set to bring a host of new possibilities, and yet, it also brings its own sets of challenges.

Vancouver Island-based developer Cloudhead Games, with their AAA pedigree (Bioware, Relic) and an industry leading three years of VR experience, are bringing new ideas to the table, not only in the form of innovative gameplay, but also changing how players interact with the world of VR.

Through the introduction of the studio’s Blink VR locomotion mechanic, an elastic VR playspace, Cloudhead Games are delivering a 100% nausea-free play experience.

Combining three primary systems – Cinematic Blink,  Precision Blink and Volume Blink  – the locomotion mechanic  ensures player safety, deep traversal and complete spacial awareness in both the virtual and real world.

Through non-intrusive in-game visual positioning cues, and the ability to “blink” across distances, Blink allows players a safe, scalable play environment,  allowing you to physically walk around a space or stand still at your desk.

Play in the office, or in an airplane hangar – your adventure, your choice.

Blink will debut in Cloudhead Games’ debut title, The Gallery: Call of the Starseed, Episode 1 of 4, the first commercially announced “made for VR” title, and will launch alongside the HTC Vive in Holiday 2015.

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil New Minion Training Video

Overlord_FOE_Screenshot1

UK – August 10, 2015 – The dastardly development minions at Codemasters today unleashed the latest video for Overlord: Fellowship of Evil, their digital only, angelically-priced, devilishly fun Action RPG which is coming to PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and Windows PC soon. Fans of evil doings can watch the trailer in action now at www.overlordthegame.com.

Whilst eviling alone is fun, the second in their series of training videos from The Minionstry of Information also teaches Netherghūls-in-training the value of working together. Bringing a friend (or at least someone you can tolerate for a while) along to help with the carnage can really help lift the levels of nefarious nastiness.

But in Overlord: Fellowship of Evil, your friends can also be your biggest enemies. Co-operation becomes “co-opetition” as Netherghūls compete to be more evil throughout the game and traps offer opportunities for mischief.

“Whilst you are welcome to indulge in some solo mayhem and destruction, sometimes you need a friend to back you up,” said Gnarl, evil Minion Master. “And when I say friend, I mean enemy who hasn’t killed you yet.”

Fellowship of Evil has been designed to be equally fun playing solo or with your friends in co-op,” said Carl Johnson, Chief Design Minion, Codemasters. “Whether you’re at your happiest causing chaos alone with a horde of minions at your heels or together with some equally evil companions, there’s always plenty of deviousness to be done. Remember, evil never plays by the rules!”

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil is a dark and twisted Action RPG filled with the series’ signature black humor. Penned by award-winning original Overlord scriptwriter Rhianna Pratchett, Overlord: Fellowship of Evil delivers an epic new quest featuring four Netherghūls – undead servants of the dark arts, resurrected in the absence of a true Overlord, to bring evil back to a world overrun by the forces of good.

Assisting gamers once again are the mighty, maniacal and occasionally moronic minions, ready to unleash their charmingly chaotic brand of destruction and led by Gnarl, their wise old master, voiced, as before, by actor Marc Silk.

Players will embark on a brand new Overlord adventure filled with fun combat and twisted fantasy tales in single-player or with up to three friends in local and online single-screen co-op. Overlord: Fellowship of Evil invites players to dive into an Action RPG where it’s good to be bad, but it’s GREAT to be evil.

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil invades digital stores on consoles and Steam for Windows PC in 2015. Follow the Codemasters minions’ progress towards world domination on the Codemasters Blog and on social media on Twitter and Facebook.

World of Tanks Xbox One Review

wot_xbox_one_launch_screen_02_branded_3472x

I fell in love with World of Tanks when it was just a wee fledgling of a game. Four years later and with three games running under the Wargaming.net flag the title that steams ahead the most is still the first one they let the public taste: World of Tanks. World Of Tanks has now launched live on Xbox One and, if you you liked it on the Xbox 360 or the PC platforms, then you are in for a grand treat when you get your controller in-hand and start slinging rounds downrange.

Hands On:
Please note that, while I usually list a game’s official features prior to diving into a hands-on, the list is HUGE! Simply way too much to put in front of the hands-on section. An abbreviated version of the list will appear at the end of this review.

The first thing you notice when you get onto the Xbox One version of World of Tanks is just how crisp the visual details are. Looking at the tanks in the garage, the details are exceptional. You can tell that they went through archival photos of the actual tanks and crafted every little detail – even down to the placement of an enemy helmet and defensive logs on the “Fury” tank.  This is a recurring theme in this incarnation of the game, everything is HD and rebuilt from the ground up and the hardware of the Xbox One is pushed hard enough that the game had crashing issue when it would launche – it just froze up with all the detail once you entered a match.  A reasonable amount of this detail will be later implemented in the PC and Xbox 360 version but the Xbox One is where this game will shine, even in the menus.

If you come straight from the PC version of the game, the menu system is a little daunting at first. If you came from the Xbox 360 version, then there are just a few things to get used to such as the Proving Grounds menu. The nice thing is that the Xbox One version of World of Tanks isn’t just a simple port – actually it is more the opposite as they made a bunch of changes and improvements from the ground up that they plan to implement on the 360 and PC.  Once you get past the initial menu navigation you get the pleasure of seeing the tanks you had already collected sitting there in your garage in all their new HD glory.  I purposely didn’t check the details of this new version so every update was a surprise.  I had expected to see three starter tanks but was jazzed to see my work on the Xbox 360 version reflected in my Xbox One garage selections.  I love World of Tanks and had taken quite a while to really appreciate it on the 360 so it was nice to see I didn’t have to start that process all over from scratch.

wot_xbox_one_launch_screen_15_branded_3472x

Another way Wargaming.net helped me to appreciate the detail was by giving me loaner access to a fully stocked garage account so that I could go through and notice all the details added to every single tank.  In the past the premium tanks were all about performance and little about how they looked.  I can say that I found tanks which I really, really want now that are not necessarily because of beefy performance but just the beautiful, historically-accurate detail of the vehicle.  I want the “Ripper” tank so bad I can’t even express it enough.  It performs nicely but the tank that has the same nickname as I do also has one of the most amazing paint jobs that reflect the actual vehicle’s paint designs that left me stunned and wanting it.

If you have not played the game on the Xbox 360 I highly recommend the Training and Proving Grounds.  These not only provide a bit of starter capitol but they also help you get used to using the controller which is extremely different from the mouse and keyboard, especially when it comes to manual aiming and zoomed shots. A helpful hint on this is to do a lock on target then hit the zoom button so that your turret is oriented and you can make fine calculations. If you have spent some time playing it on the 360 you should be able to jump right in, though the Proving Grounds is a nice warm-up if it has been a while.  Playing against the AI also gives you a chance to take in all the new details in the map.

wot_xbox_one_launch_screen_07_branded_3472x

The details in the map are so well done and so dramatic that I went into one map that I had played well over 100 times on the other systems and I didn’t recognize it at all.  I thought at first it was an entirely new map since I hadn’t looked at which one was loading.  Then I noticed building locations and attack points and realized which map it was.  Birds could be heard singing off to one side causing my cats to look that way, fires looked realistic, building had natural looking aging and when damaged natural looking destruction.  I was marveling at it all as I drove through a field of high grass at the detail as all of a sudden a murder of crows took flight in front of me and past the screen.  I thought I was safe behind a building when all of a sudden a mortar shell struck nearby causing a crater and ground damage that my tank actually bumped on and persisted through the battle.  When it rained there was the rain drops on the camera view which shows up in games a lot now but the shine on the armor and the way the water ran off it was spots on physics.  I began to hope for rain missions just to see the detailed slosh of puddles and the way the rain ran off of everything.  Night battles look like they are truly lit by moonlight or taking place at twilight.  Even though all the mechanics were the same from the Xbox 360, the new details and physics improvements on the Xbox One left me stunned.

wot_xbox_one_launch_screen_10_branded_3472x

Probably one of the most shocking things is that World of Tanks is still a free-to-play game that can still be completely free-to-win – though with their HD beauty I think the value of the premium tanks have gone up.  When I had access to whichever tanks I wanted to test out on the press account I found myself going toward the ones I thought looked cool as much as the ones that were highest regard for performance.  Taking the Ripper out or the Freedom and doing some damage running around in a very detailed or special painted tank was so much fun I didn’t want it to end.  As I am writing this I’m itching to get back to the game.

Last Shot:
I was already a fan of the game, but World of Tanks on the Xbox One is superior to other systems and most tank games on the market now. If you wonder whether or not I am right, log on and give it a try. It doesn’t cost anything until you get addicted enough to start investing in it which I have been for some time. Then you can just think of how much money you have spent on other games that have come and gone over the last four years while this one is still going strong. I can’t wait until World of Warplanes and World of Warships make their console debuts, until then I need to get back to the Ripper while I still have access.

Robot Chicken Season 7 DVD Review

Robot Chicken Season 7

Robot Chicken Season 7

Now finished with its seventh season, Robot Chicken is going strong and more irreverent than ever. We got the chance to look at season 7 on DVD, and were very pleased to find not only some of the funniest episodes of Robot Chicken made to date but, also, a creator commentary for EVERY SINGLE ONE of the twenty episodes! The commentaries are often times hilarious and, at the very least, interesting in getting a gauge on the creative process of show’s creation. Also included in this two disc set is a special Christmas episode. Some of the highlights of the season include an epic Bitch Pudding story arc (in fact, she graces the DVD box art), some great The Smurfs-centric episodes, and a DiC cartoon version of Space Jam.

Like the other Robot Chicken season sets on DVD, the pricing is extremely affordable at $22.96 on Amazon with Prime shipping available. Unlike the other Robot Chicken season sets, this one doesn’t have the secret extras hidden in drill down menus that viewers had to search out. The extras on this set are all well-defined and in easy to find locations. Some of the hardcore Robot Chicken fans might miss this but, I had no issue with it as I just want to watch the content, not go on a search for stuff I paid for.

Overall, the DVD release of Robot Chicken’s seventh season had me in stitches and I watched it twice. The show’s creative direction seems to grow bolder with each season and I can’t wait to see what lies in store for us viewers in the show’s eighth season – which is scheduled to premiere on Adult Swim come October 25, 2015.

Halloween: Michael Myers Comes Home Announced for Universal Halloween Horror Nights

Universal-Horror-Nights-Halloween

Universal City, California, August 8, 2015 – Michael Myers, aka “The Boogeyman,” takes a stab at Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” beginning Friday, September 18, 2015 in a startling and terrifying new maze, “Halloween: Michael Myers Comes Home,” inspired by the unparalleled, original classic slasher film, Halloween, directed by renowned horror filmmaker John Carpenter.

Halloween, hailed as one of the greatest horror films of all time and starring Jamie Lee Curtis in her acting debut, will come to life in the demented new experience: “Halloween: Michael Myers Comes Home.”  The haunted maze will take guests through the tormented town of Haddonfield, Illinois, where on one fateful Halloween night in 1963, a six-year-old child by the name of Michael Myers inexplicably and brutally stabbed his sister to death with a kitchen knife. Guests will relive the terror that a maniacal Michael Myers inflicted upon the once quiet town after his escape from a psychiatric hospital to take bloody revenge on new and unsuspecting victims.

Guests will have the sensation of stepping through the silver screen directly into unsettling and shocking film scenes as they navigate their way through Haddonfield, adorned in classic Halloween décor on a similar Halloween night in 1963.  Meyer’s abandoned family home and its blood-splattered walls, where the violent murder took place, will set the stage for a new crime scene as guests attempt to evade the relentless killer–armed with his signature bloodstained knife.

“Halloween is the ultimate classic slasher film that spawned an entire horror film genre,” said John Murdy, Creative Director at Universal Studios Hollywood and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “Bringing John Carpenter’s disturbing, cutting-edge vision to life as part of ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ is the ideal complement to our maze lineup as we continue to break creative ground with outstanding horror icons that raise the intensity level of our experience.”

“We are extremely excited to team up with Universal Studios Hollywood’s fantastic event, ‘Halloween Horror Nights,” said Malek Akkad, President of Trancas International Films and Compass International Pictures. “The attention to detail that the creative team gives to the Halloween maze creates a realistic and terrifying experience for guests that is truly authentic to the film. This year’s maze will be the best yet.”

“Halloween Horror Nights” 2015 at Universal Studios Hollywood kicks off on Friday, September 18 and continues on select nights through November 1.
