Exploring the new weapons and supporting platform features, in the video. Arma 3’s Creative Director Jay Crowe, Project Lead Joris-Jan van ’t Land, and Encoding Lead Petr Kolar discuss the vision behind the Marksmen DLC, its development process, and the contribution it makes to the Arma 3 sandbox.

Carrie the Musical Review – La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts

carrie-the-musical-1

I originally attended the March 20, 2015 performance of Carrie the Musical, over at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, not intending to review it. Many of you readers know that we have a dedicated horror/Halloween column here on the site thanks to my love of that kind of media. So, I was really excited to check out this production in person. After about fifteen minutes into the show, I knew I had to write a review of it. Carrie the Musical tells the story of a girl, Carrie, who is relentlessly bullied at school, and eventually finds her voice as well as a power she could not imagine. If you have seen the Stephen King movie or novel that this musical is based on, you know things don’t end well…

Emily Lopez does an amazing job in the titular role of Carietta “Carrie” White, and Misty Cotton is wonderful in her role as the tragic, and detestable, Margaret White, Carrie’s Mother. Kayla Parker plays as Sue Snell, the girl who is most sympathetic towards Carrie and Valerie Rose Curiel plays Chris Hargensen, the true villain of the story. Jon Robert Hall plays Tommy Ross, Carrie’s prom date, and Garrett Marshall plays Billy Nolan, boyfriend and accomplice to Curiel’s Hargensen.

Emily Lopez has a terrific way of getting the audience to feel sorry for her and protective of her all at the same time. By the musical’s climax, you can understand exactly why Carrie does what she does in a blind fit of rage. Also, big kudos to Lopez for fearlessly doing a fully nude scene on stage. Lopez uses the vulnerability of the situation to her advantage and sells the sad, shocking scene to the audience with the skills of a veteran actor. Misty Cotton manages to masterfully-walk a fine line in a place where the adjectives “crazy”, “sad”, and “tragic” all merge together and this further adds to how we feel about Carrie and her struggles. Like most characters in Carrie the Musical, Margaret White also has her own cross to bear (no pun intended). Their relationship throughout the musical is complicated, to say the least.

Kayla Parker’s Sue Snell is the character we are first introduced to in the show and she does a great job of walking both the pre and post-prom worlds. Her character is also sympathetic to Carrie and, in terms of the story, has a lot to feel guilty about when all is said and done. John Robert Hall’s Tommy Ross is more of the “straight man” to the actions of the rest of the male cast. Tommy is great at sports but he has his own internal struggle about his future to deal with, and really doesn’t want anything to do with tormenting Carrie White. In fact, I would say Kayla Parker and Jon Robert Hall’s characters are the most “real” of any of those in the story – middle of the road kids who feel for what Carrie is going through, they try to make things right, but also are going through their own issues.

carrie-the-musical-2

Valerie Rose Curiel plays the malicious and evil Chris Hargensen and she is outstanding in this role. Before that gets misconstrued, I will state for the record that I heard Curiel speaking after the show and she was exceptionally nice and nothing like Chris. This makes me give her even more praise as she really made me hate her character consistently through her performance. Chris is broken and, in some ways, the true monster of the story. Then again, there are also a few moments, phrases, etc where you can see some cracks in her armor and those moments give the audience pause in thinking what she must have gone through to be the way she is. Garrett Marshall’s Billy Nolan is the Yin to Hargensen’s Yang. He is a trouble-making, give no f***s about anything student that looks to be on a one-way trip to prison or worse. Like Curiel, Marshall makes us seriously hate his character’s guts. Also like Curiel, Marshall is nothing like his character – I have spoken with Garrett several times now and he has always been friendly and open. They are both highly commendable in their performances as bullies.

In my watching of this performance, I was shocked at just how seriously I viewed what was happening to Carrie. I was sometimes angry and even a little wrathful of her tormentors. The protective instinct in me partly wanted to march down onto the “gym” floor, wrap a safety blanket around the poor girl, and take her out of that situation. This was in stark contrast to my memories of watching the movie, starring Sissy Spacek, when I was younger. I remember viewing the film as a sort of campy revenge flick where the mean girls got their comeuppance. Not this time however, and I couldn’t quite figure out why until sitting down to write this review. Maybe it was because I had my share of bullying and name calling in high school – maybe it is because I am simply older now. However, I think there is more to it than that…

There is a reason why the story of Carrie resonates so much more effectively in 2015 than it did when the original novel came out in 1974, or the movie in 1976, or even the many (sometimes failed) incarnations of the musical since 1988. That reason is simply that we live in a Post-Columbine world where, as a society, so much more light has been shed on teen bullying and school violence due to grizzly situations like that one and, unfortunately, several others. One could argue that “Carrie” is the first fictional active school shooter story – just have Carrie bring an assault rifle to the prom instead of her telekinetic abilities. But, I digress…

carrie-the-musical-4

Carrie the Musical’s design/production team needs to be given huge kudos for the terrific job they did of immersing the audience into the world of Ewen High School. Throughout the performance, characters and effects appear all around the audience and it added a fun, dynamic staging to the show. This is in stark contrast to past incarnations of the musical which have been performed in a traditional audience facing a stage and proscenium style. Oh no – in this version of Carrie the Musical, you are all on stage! I am sad to report that the seating is not very comfortable as you are basically sitting on wooden bleachers. If you have a seat pad you like, bring it – you will thank me!

Now, while the show has been cleaned up and streamlined from past versions, it still has some moments where a musical number or two drags on longer than it should. Sometimes that is to hide a quick change (which is understandable) but, other times, it’s just the way it is… However, these are minor occurrences and were mostly exacerbated by the seating issue.

Overall, I would highly suggest you pick up a ticket to Carrie the Musical. It is a great show with some truly intense moments. It also features a cast that gives it their all and commits to the roles they are playing – even when scenes are uncomfortable, anger-provoking, or simply shocking, they are a joy to watch work their craft.

Carrie the Musical runs until April 5, 2015. You can find ticket information and more over at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts website.

Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival Tasting Event

knotts-boysenberry-tasting-10 copy

From March 28th through April 12th, Knott’s Berry Farm hosts their annual Boysenberry Festival event, which includes a host of special foods for guests to enjoy. We were invited to small tasting event that took place on March 18, 2015, and are pleased as boysenberry punch at what you can expect. The Boysenberry Festival foods are sold out of the Wilderness Dance Hall on the outskirts of the park’s Calico Ghost Town area. Inside, you will find a host of goodies.

The best of the bunch is what I will start with… The hashtag-worth Fun Bun! This is a cinnamon roll that is battered in funnel cake batter and served with a boysenberry cream cheese frosting . It is simply delicious and I hope to have several more. In fact, if I could have taken all of them home, I would have. Also on my delicious list was the deep fried alligator topped with boysenberry garlic aioli. I had never eaten an alligator before but it tastes a lot like chicken! The ribs coated with boysenberry BBQ sauce were good, but I wanted to taste more boysenberry in the sauce. The same goes for the chicken and sausage sandwich – very tasty but lacking in the boysenberry department. The hot dog and boysenberry ketchup were very good and a great contrast of sweet and savory.

There are a multitude of wine vendors in the Wilderness Dance Hall – unfortunately, I don’t drink a lot of wine so I can’t give you an accurate review of them. I can say there were a lot of people drinking the wine, which tends to be a good review in and of itself. Aside from the wine, the food fare also featured fish sandwiches with boysenberry tartar sauce as well as boysenberry “purple” vines and gummy bears.

Finally, for the beer drinkers out there, the park was tending up boysenberry ale, which was a Pilsner infused with boysenberry. It was a refreshing beverage and one the beer drinkers out there will probably enjoy. As the evening went on, the Knott’s Berry Farm marketing team also offered some tours of Ghost Town. We have been fortunate to tour Ghost Town several times now, and stayed for more Fun Bun action! Be sure to check out Knott’s official website for ticket details as well as information on other upcoming events!

World of Warships Beta Preview

classes_14_(2)_1920x

If you haven’t played World of Tanks, I hope it is for one of two reasons: you have never heard of it or just hate war games. If it is because you haven’t heard of it, go to you PC or Xbox 360 or mobile device and download it. You’re welcome. As fast paced and fun free-to-play games go, it is hard to beat that one. I even have a hat and a couple key chains that I display proudly because I love that game. If you know about World of Tanks, you probably know about World of Warplanes, the second installment in the Wargaming.net trio of titles that puts you into the driver’s seat of various military aircraft. The next installment, based in naval warfare, has had fans wanting to test the waters for years and it has finally come along with World of Warships Beta Weekends.

Description & Features:

  • The highly anticipated World of Warships is the latest free, historical online combat game to be added to the Wargaming’s catalog. Command a massive naval fleet featuring history’s most iconic war vessels, level up important tech modules and prepare to dominate the oceans in World of Warships.
  • With four classes of ships, myriad upgrades, strategically designed environments the action never ends and every match is a unique experience. Endless hours of strategy, tactical gameplay and pulse pounding combat await all who take the helm in World of Warships!
  • Aircraft carriers — A multi-role ship that brings a RTS-style gameplay to the fight. Loaded with four styles of aircraft (Dive Bombers, Torpedo Bombers, Scouts and Fighters) and the ability to command multiple squadrons, carriers can shape the fight from the skies.
  • Destroyers — These versatile vessels are perfect for hunting enemy cruisers, spotting them for teammates to target or blowing them out of the water personally. Additionally, the anti-aircraft guns that line their deck offer another line of defense against high flying threats.
  • Cruisers — Lightly armored but swift, cruisers are the fastest, most maneuverable ship available. This class is a major threat on the open water, dealing damage from either massive cannons or deadly torpedoes.
  • Battleships — These are the designated “heavy hitters” of World of Warships. Massive cannons, thick armor and rows of anti-aircraft artillery make them a deadly “triple threat” in any battle.

Hands On:
I was like a kid doing the pee pee dance waiting for the game’s beta client to download and install. I first saw this game at E3 2011 and its expo presence consisted of a woman in a sailor costume showing a single image of a Warship as part of the Wargaming.net booth. I was already hooked on World of Tanks, having played it at the show and excited about World of Warplanes but World of Warships was what I was most looking forward to. I have played just about every naval warfare video game I could find and actually grew up as a fisherman on boats since I was 6 years old.

The moment the download was ready I rubbed my hands together and dove in. It took one game to realize that it had all the aspects that I loved from World of Tanks and my favorite parts of World of Warplanes combined into one game. Technically, it is still in beta testing, which means it could change a lot during the time it takes to hit final product, but as long as they maintain their course it should be smooth sailing.

Ok now that I have gotten most of my sea vessel puns out of the way it is time to break in down into what works and what might or might not need refining. The shooting system is a great deal like World of Tanks, where you can lock on an enemy at a great distance but zooming in and adjusting gun elevation and target lead give you the best precision kills and bonus damage ribbons for hitting strong points such as a ship’s Citadel or fuel or armament locations, causing fires. Distance, speed, and maneuverability all play into effect on this as well as your own ships position and speed.

5_fuso[1]_1920x

World of Warplanes took all those important factors into consideration, but due to the need to maintain altitude, avoiding stalls, and watching for enemy ground attacks, a zoomed in killshot was a risky one. There are some of those risks associated with World of Warships such as running aground or ship ramming (a popular and frowned upon last ditch effort in WoWP) but mostly terrain is used for cover and concealment such as in World of Tanks. You can even set autopilot and not worry about the ship’s speed and maneuvering but I found out quick that like in World of Tanks, speed and maneuvering can win or lose a battle. Better learn to shoot AND move!

Each class of ship has a very distinct advantage in battle and definitely there is one to fit pretty much every gamer’s taste. The classes play out very similar to World of Tanks and, much like World of Tanks, the ships all seem to belong together on the waters. World of Warplanes seem to be missing a bit of this because plane evolution was mainly driven by leaps forward in aviation causing aircraft to become obsolete where, when it comes to tanks or ships, as long as they are in similar armor classes they haven’t changed that much over time. Plus you don’t see Spanish galleons against WWII iron ships in this game. Maybe they will bring wooden warships in eventually but I think Wargaming.net learned from World of Warplanes to stick to a degree of sameness for proper balance.

The ships have special abilities that might take a little getting used to, torpedoes and planes in particular. But they aren’t necessary to start off, the first ships are straight forward giving you a learning curve before you have to figure out how to fire a torpedo in the right direction… and the right time.

First Round:

World Of Warships looks like it will be a prized addition to the Wargaming.net lineup, especially when you consider how much fun it is AND it is free-to-play. Expect premium ships to come along but they have to pay their team somehow so I don’t blame them. Even with premium vehicles, a good time will be had by all!

Arma 3 Marksmen DLC available on April 8th

arma3_dlc_marksmen_screenshot_02

March 19, 2015 — Bohemia Interactive today announced the official release date for the upcoming Arma 3 downloadable content pack, Arma 3 Marksmen. Flexing its guns on April 8th, the Marksmen DLC looks to build upon Arma 3‘s infantry experience by adding new premium weapons, attachments, and gear. Alongside the new DLC, Bohemia Interactive will also release a major platform update, which implements a new multiplayer mode, training courses and showcase scenario, plus several much-anticipated platform features related to weapon handling (#bipods) and sound.

Serving as the backbone of the Marksmen DLC are the seven new weapons. Among these are five marksman rifles, namely the Cyrus 9.3 mm, MAR-10 .338, Mk-I EMR 7.62 mm, Mk14 7.62 mm, and ASP-1 Kir. The other two weapons are the SPMG .338 and Navid 9.3 mm medium machine guns. The weapons will be complemented by the AMS and Kahlia medium range scopes. There will also be new ghillie suits for the NATO, CSAT, and AAF factions to provide camouflage for various terrain types. Furthermore, the Marksmen DLC will add two Remote Designators, which can be used to spot and laser designate targets from afar. Those who want to hone their shooting skills can pay a visit to the shooting range for brand new firing drills, or go on a reconnaissance mission in the Marksmen showcase scenario.

Overall, the Marksmen DLC aims to redefine what it means to fire a weapon in Arma 3. This idea will be reinforced by a major upcoming platform update, that will be released alongside the Marksmen DLC, and will be free to everyone who owns Arma 3. Besides new playable content and major upgrades to weapon handling, this update will include suppressor and bipod weapon attachments, as well as nine new types of face paint, and three new heavy and grenadier vests designed specifically for improved explosive shielding and ballistic protection.

In terms of playable content, the aforementioned platform update will deliver a brand new multiplayer mode called End Game. Here, two teams compete to locate and secure valuable schematics. On top of this new multiplayer mode, the update will also include the Firing From Vehicles showcase scenario, as well as new VR training courses, objects for content creators, and a brand new set of Steam achievements.

With regards to platform features, the upcoming Arma 3 update will introduce weapon resting and weapon deployment – which have been on the list of most requested features by the Arma 3 community. Weapon resting means that players will benefit from an accuracy bonus whenever they are near a stable surface, while weapon deployment will enable players to use bipods for a more steady shot. Together with improvements made to the simulation of recoil, and improvements to enemy AI suppression, this should provide a more tactical, intuitive, and rich experience to the players of Arma 3. Finally, the new platform update will make significant upgrades to sound by adding more sound samples and new sound technology. These improvements should enhance the immersion and contribute to gameplay by providing players with a better situational awareness.

To round out the Marksmen DLC package and the supporting platform update, Bohemia Interactive will be expanding Arma 3’s existing Virtual Arsenal feature with Virtual Garage. This means players will not only be able to preview soldiers, weapons, and gear, and create custom loadouts for their characters, but also examine and customize the extensive collection of vehicles in Arma 3. In addition, the new update will open up Virtual Arsenal so that people will be able to try out all of Arma 3’s premium weapons, vehicles, and other DLC content, without restrictions – even if they do not own the DLC. A more in-depth explanation of Bohemia Interactive’s approach to DLC for Arma 3, and how it prevents a split in the game’s multiplayer community between those who own DLC and those who do not, can be found in the studio’s previously released blog.

The Arma 3 Marksmen DLC will be available from April 8th for 12.99 EUR/10.99 GBP/15.99 USD onSteam and Store.bistudio.com. People can already purchase the Arma 3 DLC Bundle, which includes the Arma 3 Karts, Arma 3 Helicopters, and the upcoming Marksmen DLC, for 19.99 EUR/16.99 GBP/24.99 USD – saving them more than 25% over buying the DLC packs separately.

To enlist for regular Arma 3 service, people can purchase the standard edition of Arma 3 (44.99 EUR/39.99 GBP/59.99 USD) and the Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition (49.99 EUR/42.99 GBP/64.99 USD) from Steam and Store.bistudio.com. A boxed version of Arma 3 is sold at many of the major high-street retailers. For more information about Arma 3, please visit www.arma3.com and/or follow Arma 3 on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
