The first trailer focuses on Basso, a former boxman (safe-cracker) turned fence, who uses his vast connections to The City’s underworld to organize thieving jobs for Garrett. He owns an intelligent, but bad tempered magpie called Jenivere who delivers messages for him. Garrett might consider himself a loner, but Basso is the nearest thing he has to a friend – and whether he readily admits it or not; he rather likes the fellow.

Montague’s Mount Beta Preview (PC/Steam Greenlight)

Title1_1080

I enjoy survival horror year-round, but I particularly enjoy it during October so that is sets that haunting Halloween mood which is sometimes hard to develop in the high desert.  So when a Steam Greenlight project called Montague’s Mount came along I was more than happy to take a dreary trip through a puzzling island in this beta preview.

Description:

Based on a true story, Montague’s Mount is a first-person psychological rollercoaster ride through isolation, desolation and one man’s tortured mind.

The mixture of cold Atlantic water and coarse sand in your mouth brings you back from unconsciousness. Surrounded by the wreckage of a boat’s hull, you can only draw one conclusion: your vessel has been torn apart by the submerged rocks. The secrets of the island must be uncovered if you are ever going to find a way to escape. Where is everyone; is the island really uninhabited; what is lurking within the isolated caves; and what is that building on top of Montague’s Mount?  Can you handle the truth?  A disturbing psychological thriller set in the bleakness of an abandoned island, combining exploration, puzzle-solving and a poignant storyline.

You have been warned.

Hands On:

So if you noticed the screenshots in this preview seem a bit dark there is no need to adjust your screen.  The entire preview was this dark and dreary, the main sounds being the crashing of waves, cries of gulls and the monotonous sound of a fog horn.  Most things you come up have been savaged by the elements… or something else.  Sure the weather made the luggage soggy and moldy looking but that doesn’t explain the corpses littering the island paths or the uneasy watched feeling you occasionally get.  The constant rain certainly didn’t kill the couple who died holding hands in the shack or the fella hung high from a tree.  But dead men don’t let you know what’s up so you are left with puzzling together machinery, gears and levers to make your way from one dark almost colorless part of the island to another.

The puzzles are well done, one stumped me for a while and I’m sure I wasn’t alone on that.  Others were more like a big scavenger hunt wondering if whatever was watching you might make itself known.  The controls are fairly standard first person stuff as is the perspective, the challenge is not in moving but in how to get to the next place.  Without giving too much away or saying anything that may be changed after beta (any content is subject to change before release) I can say I lost track of time in the land and was surprised how late it was when the preview ended, for a beta preview it was pretty long and immersive even if my head welcomes the end of the fog horn, it gets a little crazy in 5.1 surround.

First Taste:

This was only the first taste of Montague’s Mount and I am really excited about the eminent release of the game.  It is finished and will be releasing to non-Steam stores this month though I REALLY hope Steam picks it up, it is a terrific game in the spirit of Amnesia or Dear Esther with it’s great take on the dark and empty island filled with wreckage, corpses and more than a few puzzles.  I can’t wait to get my hands on the full version pf Montague’s Mount and find out what happens next.  My biggest wish is that I had an Oculus Rift to get even further immersed.

The Wolf Among Us – Episode One (PC/Steam)

1364411192-the-wolf-among-us

Telltale Games has solidly proven itself as a company to be reckoned with by delivering the huge hit game series The Walking Dead and the fan favorite Back To The Future as well as other solid titles such as Sam And Max and Poker Night.  They found their niche in episodic gaming, most of which have several seasons and dramatic cliffhangers at the end of episodes that keep you coming back for more.  The real strength in their games though comes in their “choose your own adventure” style that shows that every choice you make in the game, even if the choice is not to make a choice, has a dramatic effect on the plot and can mean life or death for the characters within.  The Wolf Among Us is a beautiful example of this with comic book style graphics and storyline choices that have you replaying almost as soon as you finish the first time.

ss-businessofficecranesnowbigby-882x493

Description:
The Wolf Among Us is a five episode series from the creators of the 2012 Game of the Year: The Walking Dead.  Based on Fables (DC Comics/Vertigo), an award-winning comic book series, it is an often violent, mature and hard-boiled thriller where the characters and creatures of myth, lore and legend are real and exist in our world.

As Bigby Wolf – THE big bad wolf in human form – you will discover that the brutal, bloody murder of a Fable is just a taste of things to come, in a game series where your every decision can have enormous consequences.

the-wolf-among-us-1380925582365_1024x576

Features:
– Your choices matter: it’s not only WHAT you choose to do that will affect how your story plays out, but WHEN you choose to do it
– A mature and gritty take on characters from fairytales, legends and folklore who have escaped into our world. These are not the characters you’d see on a little child’s lunchbox.
– Play as Bigby Wolf: formerly the most feared monster among the Fables, now Sheriff of Fabletown and protector of those he used to hunt. He must restrain the beast within if he is to earn the trust of those around him.
– Choose Bigby’s actions carefully. Will you approach a situation calmly or unleash your inner rage? The way you act will determine how others respond to you.
– Set before the events seen in the first issue of the comics – you don’t have to know the characters or the world to play!

TheWolfAmongUs-2

Hands On:
As the description above says, you don’t have to know the characters or the world to play the game but it doesn’t take long to realize you already do.  Fabletown is tucked away in a corner of New York where the hard-boiled pulp fiction feel of the old detective dime books still hasn’t died and every face is one that has adapted to a world outside of fairy tale “happily ever after” times to big city street life.  It comes through in the deep shadows and dark storyline of one of Vertigo’s most popular series beautifully rendered in a video game form.  If you liked The Walking Dead for any reason other than zombies you will like The Wolf Among Us just as much if not more.

The controls are the same as a FPS with most actions being point and click with multiple choice actions such as discussions or fighting being WASD.  This is good to know ahead of time because the time you take to make choices can effect the storyline just as much as the choices you make.  In some cases just letting the time run out on making a choice is a choice because a silent glare from The Big Bad Wolf can make some folks talk or act just as well as anything he could say.  If you ever played a lesser known Telltale game, Law And Order: Legacies, you have seen how effective and important timing can be in interrogations (if you like the Law And Order shows that game is a must play).

It’s hard to say much more without giving away the storyline and this is a spoiler-free zone but it can be said you get a lot of great story in the first episode, definitely enough to get you hooked and waiting for the next.

The_Wolf_Among_Us_05

First Round:
Usually this would be the “Last Call” section but since this is just the first episode there will be more to come and more to review so it is just the beginning.  Fans of The Walking Dead game and Vertigo’s Fables will eat this game up if they give it a try, it is just as good as The Walking Dead with a wider variety of characters limited only to the realm of fairy tales which is a pretty broad realm indeed.  Ever wonder what would happen if Snow White had to give up her castle for a brownstone?  This might just be the place to find out.

Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 3 Gaming Keyboard Review (PC/Tech)

Anyone who has ever looked into competitive gaming equipment has heard of Mad Catz, their tournament arcade sticks, surround sound gaming headsets and particularly their Guinness World Record holding R.A.T. mouse series are all sought after by the serious player and their S.T.R.I.K.E. keyboard line is no different.  The S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 is the flagship of this line, featuring just about every bell and whistle that could be attached to a keyboard and is the dream of many gamers.  If the S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 is beyond your means or you just prefer a straight forward reliable gaming keyboard then the S.T.R.I.K.E. 3 is the keyboard for you affordability without giving up the gaming edge.

Game On:
The S.T.R.I.K.E. 3 doesn’t require a learning curve to get started and doesn’t take long to master.  This is the S.T.R.I.K.E. keyboard stripped down to it’s core with a dozen macro buttons and a conveniently located set of quick keys this keyboard looks on the surface fairly standard which makes the new gamer feel at home quicker.

The real strength and difference of the S.T.R.I.K.E. 3 is in the inside where you hopefully will never have to look.  Besides having 16 million option RGB backlighting this series uses a custom engineered P.U.L.S.E. feedback system which is a membrane precise tactile feedback and five times the durability.  If that doesn’t mean anything to you simply put it is really a tough keyboard without losing any touch sensitivity when hitting keys.  The keyboard actually has a system built in to make it even more sensitive to key touches to help reduce muscle fatigue.

One of my personal favorite aspects is the ability to turn off the Windows key easily.  I can’t count how many times I have gone to crouch using ctrl only to bump the Windows key and leave the game.  I usually come back to the game to find a “you are dead” screen and unleash a torrent of curses at the simple little button.  Apparently I was not alone since Mad Catz fixed that issue for me.  Thanks!

Last Call:
There are keyboards in the S.T.R.I.K.E. series that can do some amazing things and control multiple programs at once and if you can afford them and have experience at multitasking I highly recommend them.  If you just want a very solid and dependable keyboard that will have a long life of quality service at an entry level price the S.T.R.I.K.E. 3 is the keyboard for you, it won’t let you down.

The 7th Guest 3: The Collector Kickstarter Unveiled

b59d546ee48d6420084908755d0f29cf_large

MEDFORD, OREGON – Trilobyte Games, LLC today announced the final episode in the studio’s blockbuster franchise; The 7th Guest: 3, and unveiled a new Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign designed to underwrite production of the videogame.

The 7th Guest was released in 1993. At the time, Bill Gates called it: “…the new standard in interactive entertainment.” The title sold over 2 million copies and drove hardware sales. The sequel,The 11th Hour, was released in the fall of 1995.

“We’ve been waiting to make The 7th Guest: 3 for a long time,” said Rob Landeros, co-founder, creative director and CEO of Trilobyte Games. “The team’s in place; new puzzles are in development, and the most notorious villain in all gaming, Henry Stauf, is poised to return and finish the story that begin in The 7th Guest.  With the launch of our Kickstarter campaign, we’re turning to our fans and the gaming community to provide the only remaining ingredient, development and production funding.”

In The 7th Guest: 3, Stauf’s house is filled with 20 devilishly clever puzzles that will test wits–and scare even the most jaded gamers. The house is not only filled with puzzles, it is a puzzle; one gigantic, mechanical mind-bender. To complete the game and the story, players must solve every puzzle in the house and the puzzle of the house itself. Only then will the final, dreadful secret of that brilliant madman, Henry Stauf, be revealed.

While the gameplay of T7G3 will fairly closely follow that of The 7th Guest and 11th Hour, Trilobyte plans to thoroughly leverage touch-screen, mobile technology, and modern standards in video-game presentation to bring players the 7th Guest of their fondest dreams (and nightmares)!  “We are committed to staying true to the spirit of the original 7th Guest,” said Landeros.

The new Stauf mansion will be rendered in beautiful high-definition, extensively renovated and furnished with hundreds of interesting new items. The house’s remodelers won’t stint on redecoration. The grand, revamped edifice will be something of an historical museum.

“We estimate development and production time of approximately one year to finish this final episode,” said Landeros. “Our team is already working and we’re the kind of studio that delivers on its promises, so be ready.”  Company officials note that the price of the new game is not yet set, but is anticipated to be in the $29.95 per copy range for PCs and Macs.

Kickstarter is all about rewards. And Team Trilobyte has cooked up some creative incentives to motivate its target funders. “How’d you like to be immortalized in a blockbuster game?” asked Landeros. “At the highest donor levels, we reward backers with portraits and busts of their likeness at prominent points in the mansion – as well as a producer’s credit on the title. True fans may secure, with a major donation, an invitation to dine with Stauf in costume, party with the team, and tour the actual mansion modeled in the game.”

Salvation Prophecy – A Review (PC)

salvation_prophecy_15_keepers_puzzle

Firedance Games has released a new indie space adventure game, named Salvation Prophecy. In Salvation Prophecy, you will lead one of four galactic races towards total conquest of the galaxy through a series of different styles of battles. Game play can be broken up into three genres: third person shooter, ship to ship battles, and strategy. The issue with Salvation Prophecy is that the game feels disjointed and comes off as trying to do too much with what it has. I would have rather seen the developers go with a single game play focus and truly fine tune that aspect, then give us three almost incomplete styles of game play.

Story

The story of Salvation Prophecy evolves over the progress of the game, but begins with the player choosing one of four races to control: Salvation, Drone, Free Nations, or Wyr. Each faction has their own style of combat and story elements. The Salvation faction is a race of mutated humans, fanatically devoted to a prophecy while the Drones are automatons that have rebelled against their former masters. There is a tint of humor that is generated in your conversations with other members of your faction, especially in the Wyr campaign. While I love a game that can make me laugh, it feels a little more than out of place in Salvation Prophecy. I can’t really tell what tone the developers were going for in this game at times, and that does affect the story elements for me. Later in the game, missions do pop up that allows you to entire worm holes to explore alien worlds and finding runes that tell about the games titled Salvation Prophecy. These will lead to a larger spike in both pacing and difficulty as the game heads towards its conclusion.

What I did like about the story for Salvation Prophecy was that it took an unexpected turn during the last portion of the game. The player must change focus from conquering the other factions of the galaxy, to preventing a fifth group from total conquest. Salvation Prophecy seemed to pick up the pace once this fifth faction enters the game, it is unfortunate that the story and game play that leads up to this event is just mediocre at best.

Game Play

Salvation Prophecy’s game play switches between three different styles: third person shooter, ship to ship space battles, and the strategy component. You begin the game as a lowly grunt of your chosen faction, entering into boot camp, aka the tutorial level. You are then released into the greater struggle for galactic dominance by invading other planets that are controlled by one of the other three factions. On these planets, you participate in a infantry level battle against your foe, using ranged and melee attacks to wipe out your enemy. My first impression of these battles was that it felt like you had personal control over a single unit of a real time strategy game. However, the game play of these battles really boiled down to you not rushing in and taking on too many opponents. The battles to evolve over the course of the game, allowing for more units to enter the battlefield, but I never got the feeling that my presence there was making much of a difference. I could just hang back a bit and blend in with my fellow soldiers to take everything down.

The space battles offer a little more thrill, but even those end up being simplistic once you figure out your limits. I was truly hoping for some epic dogfights, dodging and chasing enemy aircraft amid larger space cruisers, battling it out for supremacy. However, the artificial intelligence of the enemy space craft won’t dogfight with you, they will simply turn tale and run if you engage them. That leaves the space battles being more about chasing down running enemies, then engaging them in epic combat. In a similar vein to the ground battles, the space battles only become difficult if you get in over your head, so if you pay attention you will not loose your ship, or your life.

ss_686ba50f4574622a765402eaede1ecd15ddc09ff.1920x1080

The last game play element is the commander stage, a strategy style element that allows you to conquer worlds and create missions while building up your own troops and resources. While this sounds exciting, my main complaint here is that I never once felt that any decision I made had any lasting effect. Every time I would conquer an enemy world, they would almost automatically retake it, giving me the feeling that I had no way to defend myself, nor make any real progress to the game. Resources come in so fast that you will never run out of them, but regardless of how many troops you have or send out, you will never really feel like you are making much progress.

Aesthetics

Like most indie games, Salvation Prophecy did not have a lot of budget for the most up to date graphics or sound, but what is here works for the game just fine. The graphics are not gorgeous in any sense of the word, but do get the job done. The space battles are interesting to look at, and the ship models do make it easier to tell friend from foe during these battles. The design of the four factions are interesting enough, even though the animations for the models don’t flow as well as I would have liked. My biggest complaint for the graphics is the melee animation for the models, due to the fact that I never get any indication whether or not a melee strike actually hit a person. I would have loved to have some sort of hit animation to help give me an indication whether or not I hit, instead of just having to watch the enemies’ life meter decrease.

The sound and music do a decent job in telling the story well enough, without being a soundtrack that I want to listen to over and over again. The voice actors do a good job in emoting their characters without being too over the top, except when called for by the story’s strange sense of humor. Really, all I can say is that the sound does the job without getting in the way of the game, nor really being memorable.

Final Thoughts

Salvation Prophecy is a game that tries to do a lot of things in one game, but unfortunately does not do a single one of them well enough to become a great game. The battles are interesting to be a part of, but never really gives the player a feeling of actually contributing to the overall outcome. All you have to do is play it safe and watch where you run, and you will be fine. The commander section of the game is a nice change of pace, but again, the player never truly feels like she is impacting the overall conquest of the galaxy since your colonies are overrun just as quickly as you set them up. Salvation Prophecy’s strength is in its price point, set at about $20. For that price, you do get a decent space adventure game that can be fun if you overlook some of the details. All in all, Salvation Prophecy does a decent job, without really excelling at anything.
