King’s Quest III Redux (PC Review)

In 1986 King’s Quest III was a king of its time as was its developer Sierra (anyone else miss Leisure Suit Larry?), everybody who played computer games couldn’t wait to play the King’s Quest games or crowd around a friend who was lucky enough to have a Mac or PC and play as a team. It was almost one stepped removed from table top RPG games since there were consequences for different actions that completely changed the storyline and players had to figure out not just where to go to complete a quest, but also how to even know what you needed for it or that there was one. There are some games in a similar fashion nowadays but back then it was THE way to play. So it is not surprising that a fan development team that has been dedicated to keeping games of that generation alive for new generations would choose King’s Quest III as one of it’s projects to painstakingly and lovingly hand paint backgrounds and portraits, revamp the code to play on most modern operating systems, including Windows 7, and do it all for a product that they give away for free. It took 8 years to do, was it time well spent?
