Sea of Thieves: Museum of More Pirate Trailer

March 20, 2018 – Like many of us on the team, we grew up as big fans of timeless classic movies like “The Goonies.” So it should come as no surprise that when our team went looking for the perfect person to play the lead role in the Sea of Thieves cinematic trailer, Sean Astin sat atop our list.

Today, before the official release of Sea of Thieves, I am excited to world-premiere our launch cinematic trailer, featuring Sean Astin as the curator at the Museum of More Pirate. A man determined to share his lifelong passion by preserving exhibits and sharing tales of real explorers from the game who’ve already become the stuff of legend. Sean brings an appropriate shot of charm and enthusiasm to the role and is known for his screen appearances in such well-loved stories as “The Lord of the Rings,” “Stranger Things” and, favorite of the team at Rare and early inspiration for Sea of Thieves, “The Goonies.”

Sean was an incredible partner to work with to bring the Museum of More Pirate to life as a testament to the fantastic community that has already formed around Sea of Thieves. From the first Technical Alpha in December 2016 to the recent Final Beta, we were consistently astounded by the stories cultivated by real players across the world. Thank you to Sean, our partners at 215 McCann and the fine folks at Rare for helping us to create a testament to Sea of Thieves’ established real player legends like Pikaaroon, Lizalaroo and KattTruewalker. We can’t wait to see what adventures inspire new exhibits in the museum starting tomorrow.

And if you’re looking for a final peek at the Sea of Thieves experience, check out our launch gameplay trailer featuring the first look at the mysterious and deadly kraken.

Our celebration of the launch of Sea of Thieves doesn’t stop here, however, as there are an array of global activities to satisfy your inner pirate. Those looking to test their mental mettle can embark on The Quest for the Golden Bananas, which sees crews work together to solve riddles for a chance at winning a set of four real 18-carat gold bananas.

We have our launch events across all Microsoft Store locations in the U.S., with special events at the flagship Microsoft Store in New York and Sydney. For our friends across the pond, The Voyage live stream will follow the escapades of some of the best Sea of Thieves content creators.

Tomorrow is a special day for the team at Rare and all of us on team Xbox. Sea of Thieves is an experience years in the making, and we couldn’t have gotten here without our teams globally. The Museum of More Pirate is just the latest testament to the great partnerships at work here. We hope that you’ll have as much fun playing Sea of Thieves as we have had making and supporting it.

Sea of Thieves arrives on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC tomorrow, Mar. 20 and is available from the Xbox Store, Windows Store, all good retailers globally as well as included as part of Xbox Game Pass at launch. For more information on the game please visit Xbox.com/SeaofThieves.

Be More Pirate – We hope you all enjoy Sea of Thieves.

EVE Online Designer Joins Novaquark for Dual Universe

PARIS, FRANCE – March 16, 2018 – Novaquark, the company creating the seamless virtual online civilization ‘Dual Universe’, has acquired the talent of Hrafnkell Oskarsson, one of the original designers of EVE Online. Together, Novaquark and Oskarsson will be working on Dual Universe, the giant multi-planetary sandbox universe where potentially millions of people will be able to invent new stories for themselves, create new political systems, economies, cities, and empires.

Traditional approaches in gaming and entertainment are based around companies spending substantial amounts of money to create content, and sell it. Most of the time, players have little influence on the value of the platform, as they passively consume the content, and then move on to another game. Novaquark aims to reverse this logic with its one-of-a-kind technology providing users with a stage to collectively create the content and share it together, at an unprecedented scale. The value of Novaquark comes entirely from its users and the material they generate, giving the power back to them instead of a centralized system.

At the heart of Dual Universe is a truly innovative proprietary technology, that was developed to lay the foundations of the game: the CSSC (continuous single-shard cluster) manages one single universe with potentially millions of people interacting in it at the same time, with no loading screen. Coupled with this is an innovative voxel engine enabling players to physically modify the world and foster a persistent, continuous form of reality where meaningful contributions can accumulate. Novaquark offers users:

Seamless co-existence: Millions of people exist together at the same time within a continuous “no-loading screen” virtual space, with the actions of one affecting the rest. Empires will form and die, and alliances and betrayals will shape the destiny of the world.Modifiable and evolving environment: Rather than a world that is static and scripted, Novaquark provides one that is constantly changing and progressing based on actions taken by users.

Platform for content creation: Players can use harvested materials to build anything from spaceships to cities to political and territorial systems, at any scale they want. There can be war, drama, action, conflict, all put into one giant universe for people to take control of, and that never stops. Space to enact a common inner desire for new beginnings: Dual Universe works around the old dream of humanity for people to have a second chance at creating a new life for themselves, in a way even bigger than life itself.

EVE Online, the game that Oskarsson originally designed (together with Reynir Harðarson), is one of the most acclaimed online multiplayer virtual games, well known for its emergent gameplay and impressive large-scale player-driven stories. While very different from EVE Online, Dual Universe shares a cultural heritage with it, and the experience of Oskarsson will be invaluable to help build this next generation of a persistent emergent universe. Together they will allow users to leave their mark, make a difference, contribute content and have social interactions, all to bring a sense of meaning back to gaming.

“Competitors in the MMO genre tend to rely on simplified models to connect a few hundreds, sometimes a few thousands of players together in the same arena or instance, which are often not persistent and not interconnected,” says Founder and CEO Jean-Christophe Baillie. “The experienced content is made by the company, and the players “consume” it. We have a new proprietary technology to change that and let millions of people together inside the same persistent, never stopping, virtual universe, where they are free to modify the world and create their own stories as they see fit.”

Geralt of Rivia to be SOULCALIBUR VI Guest Fighter

March 15, 2018 – Geralt was trained at the elite School of the Wolf and is considered one of the deadliest monster slayers. He possesses superhuman reflexes and strength, as well as superior sword fighting skills. Players who choose to fight as Geralt will utilize the witcher’s signature fighting style — a combination of swordplay, ability-enhancing potions, and combat magic.

Doug Cockle — the English voice of Geralt of Rivia — returns in SOULCALIBUR VI to reprise the role. Gamers will also be able to fight in Kaer Morhen — home keep of the School of the Wolf. Accompanying players in battle will be “ Hunt or be Hunted” — an iconic composition from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt soundtrack.

“SOULCALIBUR is well known in the fighting games genre for including iconic guest characters. When we were approached with the idea of doing a crossover, we thought our community would really enjoy playing as the witcher,” said Marcin Momot, Community Lead at CD PROJEKT RED. “We’ve collaborated with BANDAI NAMCO artists to faithfully recreate Geralt, and shared original Witcher 3 assets like Geralt’s model, animations, and weapons. I think BANDAI NAMCO did an outstanding job of capturing all the details and introducing The Witcher to SOULCALIBUR in a way fans of both series will enjoy.”

“All SOULCALIBUR characters have strong convictions and complex backgrounds and this is why it is a great honor for the whole SOULCALIBUR team to welcome Geralt as the guest character in SOULCALIBUR VI.” said SOULCALIBUR producer, Motohiro Okubo. “Thanks to the great cooperation with CD PROJEKT RED, we’ve been able to fully integrate Geralt’s fighting style and appearance. We can’t wait for SOULCALIBUR fans around the world to welcome Geralt to the stage of History.”
