Razer Announces Naga Phone

hero-image

Just in time for April, Razer has announced an update that will make all Razer Naga owners be able to use their gaming mice as phones too! Happy April Fool’s Day!

From the Naga Phone Update Page:

When gamers first got their hands on the Razer Naga, we received a ton of feedback: “This thing feels perfect in my hand” and “LOL look like phone.” As funny an observation as it is, that last bit got us thinking-
The sensor on the Razer Naga is so precise that it detects the most minute changes in position via Doppler shift. Couldn’t we, theoretically, apply that capability to detecting the vibrations of human speech?
The answer is yes.

The Star Wars to be Made into Comic

SWTHE #1 PG 02

APRIL 1, MILWAUKIE, OR–It’s no April Fools’ prank! Dark Horse is honored to announce a dream project: working with J.W. Rinzler, executive editor at LucasBooks, and artist Mike Mayhew (Avengers) to adapt the rough-draft original screenplay which spawned the biggest franchise in film history!

Three years before his 1977 film, George Lucas put down on paper his first story set in a galaxy far, far away—a tale of fantastic adventures, daring escapes, “lazer swords,” romance, and monsters. A story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights. The screenplay was titled The Star Wars!

“I’m not sure where I first read about The Star Wars—it was years and years ago—but the idea of Luke Skywalker being an older Jedi General, and Han Solo being a six-foot-tall lizard, turned my Star Wars fan brain on its side,” said longtime Star Wars editor Randy Stradley. “I always assumed this would be one of those stories that would be ‘lost to history,’ so getting to work on bringing it to life is kinda like a dream come true.”

“While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I’ve found many treasures—but one which truly astounded me was George’s rough draft for The Star Wars. His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind blowing,” said writer J.W. Rinzler. “While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”

Originally conceived in 1974, The Star Wars has been the subject of rumor and legend in the fan community throughout the history of the galaxy far, far away. Now, Lucas has seen fit to grant Dark Horse the right to adapt this fabled story into an eight-issue comic series launching in September!

Zip Mini Touch-n-go Review (Tech)

PAU101_13_0

The Joy Factory’s Zip Mini Touch-n-go charging station retails for $49.95 and features sleek style, the ability to charge up to four devices at once, and magnetic charging leads for quick connect/disconnect.

Using the Zip Mini Touch-n-go is very simple. Just plug the charging disc into the AC adapter by way of an included USB cable and you are ready to rock. In order to charge a device, you will need to use a “Zip Tail” charging lead. The Joy Factory has included an Apple 30-pin lead and a micro USB lead in the box. Our box did not include one, but the website states that they are now shipping a micro USB to Lightning adapter in new boxes. The charging disc features a shiny, black exterior with four divots on its top-side. These divots are where the Zip Tails will magnetically-connect to it. The idea is rather cool and functions well. Since they are magnetic, you can pull the device away from being charged with next to no effort at all. Simply pull it away, use it, then swing it back and let the Zip Tail magnetically connect once more.

The biggest problem with the Zip Mini Touch-n-go is that the two included Zip Tails are super-short in length and make serious device clutter in the are around the charging disc. I would have liked to see the longer Zip Tails included in the box. Charging up my devices at a convention center or hotel – especially during long pressers, I like being able to work on them while they charge. With such short Zip Tails, that is not a possibility.

As a second use of the Zip Mini Touch-n-go charging station, the AC adapter is one of those USB port models instead of hard-wired to the cable. The unit can pump out 2.1A of power, so if you do not want to attach your device to the charging disc, you could just plug in its USB cable directly to the adapter.

Overall, the Zip Mini Touch-n-go charging station is an excellent purchase for people look to charge their gadgets, quickly and easily. Just be aware that you may want to purchase the longer charging leads as the included ones are a bit on the short side.

Bioshock Infinite Review (PC)

lizcomstock_ONLINE

After finishing up the new Bioshock Infinite from Irrational Games, I am left in a state of reflection over what an amazing experience it was. The game starts in a very similar fashion to the original Bioshock: You are heading towards a lighthouse. This time, however, you are arriving there by way of a small rowboat. In fact, there are several Bioshock tropes that seem to have come back in this game. Instead of the first game’s “Plasmids”, the power-giving concoctions are now called “Vigors”. Instead of “EVE”, this substance is referred to as “Salts”.

Visually, Bioshock Infinite is a real beauty. What truly sells the game world is its overall art design. Much like Bioshock’s Rapture, the floating city of Columbia is a wonder to behold and get lost in. The game’s dialog and voice acting is incredibly satisfying and all of the game’s voice actors should be commended for amazing performances. Special mentions much be given to Troy Baker and Courtnee Draper, who voice the characters of Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth, respectively. They play off one another very well and it was one of the only times I found myself reacting emotionally to specific things each character would say throughout the course of the game. Speaking of Elizabeth, I have not been so attached to an AI companion in a game before. The fluid way in which she helps you during the game’s combat sequences, her previously-mentioned, amazing voice work, and her incredible animations have created a character I would love to meet in real life and thank for all the memorable moments. Bioshock Infinite sets a new standard in character design.

BioShock-Infinite4

Unfortunately, to say ANYTHING about the game’s story-line beyond what its official synopsis says would spoil something, and this writer cannot, in good conscious, do that with such a fine work of art. This needs to be experienced for one’s self – leaving you to form your own conclusions. What I can say about the game’s story is that it has a lot of twists and turns which affect the whole Bioshock IP. Truth be told, some of these twists you will see coming and some you will not. Either way, Irrational Games has weaved a very well-told and executed story which feels at many times like some awesome hybrid of an addictive video game and engrossing film.

The game introduces some very cool gameplay mechanics, such as the ability to whiz about on Columbia’s sky-rail system. Using these rails is very simple, with a few keys needed to effortlessly glide from one to another, perform attacks off of them, or even switch directions in mid travel. The flexibility this, and… other game mechanics (again – won’t spoil anything!) bring a lot of options to the table for players to make use of.

Overall, Bioshock Infinite is a much more worthy sequel/successor to the Bioshock name than Bioshock 2 was, and manages to add a lot more dimension to Bioshock’s universe. You will regret not playing this – I suggest you pick it up soon before anything gets spoiled for you. It is, in a word: Brilliant. I am rating Bioshock Infinite a 5 out of 5 and presenting it with our “Seal of Excellence”. Great job to both 2K Games and Irrational Games – we can’t wait to see how the game’s ramifications affect the future of the series.

Matrix TF3 High Speed Body Armor Review (Airsoft)

vest-tf3

The front of the Matrix TF3 High Speed Armor.

In the film Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon, actor Josh Duhamel wears a very cool, aggressive-looking armor while taking part in the film’s firefight sequences. The black, sleek, and lightweight armor has been recreated by the people at Matrix and is on-sale now at evike’s website. The TF3 High Speed Body Armor retails for $80 dollars and comes in both black and tan variants. The armor panels are made of a semi-rigid plastic material that absorbs BB impacts without problem. The under-suit on which the armor plates attach (and what you are actually wearing) is made of a comfortable neoprene.

As you can see in the image above, the armor features two areas of MOLLE webbing so you can attach your gear, ITW FastMag pouches, etc and are all well-made. I had no trouble attaching two M4 ITW FastMag pouches in the bottom MOLLE webbing area and my HT unit on the upper webbing, with additional area still for whatever else you prefer. On the back side of the armor, you won’t find much. It is fairly smooth and would be fine to rest a backpack or hydro pack against if you are going for longer engagements or overnight games. For my loadout, I customized the upper back area of the armor with a 3×2-inch piece of velcro for an IFF/morale patch.

The rear of the Matrix TF3 High Speed Armor

The biggest issue I have encountered when using the armor is that of the side buckles and straps. Over the course of several games, the side straps loosened up and needed to be re-tightened down several times. Additionally, reaching the side straps to buckle them yourself is a bit tricky and I ended up having one of my team mates buckle everything down. I wish they had kept the Cobra buckles for the shoulders and used more generic, black plastic buckles on the sides – I think those would have been more functional. That being said, the Cobra buckles do look pretty darn cool.

In play, I was consistently impressed with how nimble I could be while wearing the Matrix TF3 armor. I played three or four games wearing it and going back to a more traditional plate carrier or tactical vest was really difficult. The only drawback I can see for actual play was that you cannot hold as many pouches and mags on this armor as you can with the others. That is by design as this armor was not made to weigh the player down. That being said, if you need to have more magazines and pouches on you, you could always couple this armor with a good tactical belt. You could hang your pouches and holster off of that – perhaps even holstered to your leg as well. Aesthetically, that would create a really sleek, futuristic loadout. Either way, it’s a win-win.

comm-vest

The vest can easily support an HT on the MOLLE webbing.

The Matrix TF3 High Speed Body Armor is not just lightweight but, also, a futuristic-looking Airsoft armor that protects and allows for great freedom of movement. You can find the armor retailing for $80 dollars on evike’s official website.
