Rothco MOLLE Plate Carrier Vest Review (Airsoft)

8923

Rothco sent us over one of their new MOLLE Plate Carrier Vests to review, and I am very glad they did. Most airsofters who are serious about the game know about brands like Flyye, Eagle Industries, and LBT. However, Rothco has often been seen as an economy brand, not suited for long-term play. After taking some real time to review this vest, I am confident in saying that this is not the case at all. In fact, having owned both Flyye and Eagle Industries plate carriers in the past, I would say that this Rothco MOLLE vest is of above average quality and very well-suited for Milsim style game usage.

In terms of its build quality, the Rothco MOLLE Plate Carrier Vest is made from 600D Denier Polyester. While not as thick as the Flyye 6094’s 1000D material, the Rothco model is strong and I found no evidence of tears or weakness. The vest is even double-stitched at most of the stress points I could find, making it VERY tear resistant. The back of the Polyester panels are lined with a vinyl like material that adds a lot of rigidity and durability to the vest. The inner side of the front and back panels are lined with a soft material that absorbs some shock and makes the vest very comfortable to wear.

Rothco’s MOLLE Plate Carrier Vest has some awesome features that even some higher-end models don’t – such as the option to remove the cummerbund and still use the vest as well as the addition of a nifty cummerbund cord clip/lock. Why are these so important? In airsoft, often times you will fine yourself wearing a heavy military blouse, jacket, or shirt that might do a fine job of deflecting some of the pain from being hit all on its own. So, the added protection of a full vest might not be that important to you – you would probably be using it more for gear pouches and the like. Once the cummerbund is removed, the Rothco MOLLE Plate Carrier Vest allows for some really fast movement as well as arm range of motion – only at the expense of the side panels. Many players won’t even miss these side MOLLE areas because they put gear on a combat belt. Of course, if you prefer the cummerbund’s side panels, you can leave them on and reap the benefits of how it hugs your body slightly better than just using the two quick-release straps. The choice is yours and that is the greatest part about how Rothco designed this vest. In addition, leaving the cummerbund attached allows you to make use of its side armor panel pouches for even more Milsim play.

The previously-mentioned cummerbund cord clip/lock is simply brilliant. Often times with cummerbunds, even very expensive models, the paracord cord which holds the two side pieces together can slip out unless you knot it well. Even worse, sizing the cummerbund can take some trial and error – meaning you have to keep tying and untying the cord each time you want to make an adjustment. With Rothco’s cummerbund cord clip/lock, adjusting how much “give” is in the two pieces of the cummerbund is simple. Then, once you get the size correct, you can tie a knot above the clip/lock just to make sure it won’t come undone. This decreases sizing time quite a bit and I wish more plate carriers threw these in with their shipments.

A final note about this plate carrier is that it is very forgiving in terms of the size of the wearer. The vest is able to expand quite a bit for the larger folks and is a fine size for medium build individuals and up. For smaller-framed people, they may find that the Rothco plate carrier is a bit too big for their comfort.

The Rothco MOLLE Plate Carrier Vest is a terrific bargain for $111.49 at Rothco’s official website. It comes in black, coyote tan, and olive drab colors and accommodates up to large SAPI style plates in the front and back panels as well as two side armor plates for enhanced BB protection. I can’t say enough positive things about this vest, it is an excellent purchase.

ROCCAT Releases Power-Grid Update

ROCCAT-Power-Grid_with-Dock_bg-blue1

Hamburg – December 20, 2013 – Today, Power-Grid will see its first major update since its launch back in October. With more than a quarter of a million downloads, the software has been very successful thus far: more than 1,000 positive ratings in the Apple and Google app stores and tons of user-created content on the Power-Grid website clearly show that the app satisfies gamers’ needs to connect their smartphone to their PC. With Power-Grid still being in beta status, ROCCAT aims for continuous improvement, based first and foremost on user feedback. “Running the open beta is very important for us”, says ROCCAT founder and CEO René Korte. “With this large user base we get way more feedback than we did in the closed beta. That makes it easier for us to focus on in-demand features that are beneficial to users, because more free Power-Grid content gets shared through our store”.

The recent update to Power-Grid contains new nice-to-have features as well as completely new code – making the software more useable and open overall.

With this recent update ROCCAT also officially releases the Power-Grid SDK. Professional developers and ambitious users are now able to create advanced Power-Grid content based on this documentation.

“Releasing the Ryos MK Pro Grid is the first step towards combining Power-Grid with ROCCAT hardware. You remember our Phobo keyboard concept? Well, we’ve been working on that and I can promise you a mind-blowing solution for 2014,” says René Korte.

Power-Grid v0.459 update details:

Auto updater: If there’s a new version of Power-Grid available, the PC host software now opens a small pop-up window when started to inform the user. The installation needs to be done manually.

Plug-in importer:  Plug-ins for Power-Grid allow users to create Grids with extended functionality and are also important for advanced gaming solutions (e.g. created with the Power-Grid SDK). The new version supports plugin import and export.

New home screen: The new Power-Grid home screen now allows for the user to navigate via tabs, before even connecting to the PC host software. It is now possible to browse through the latest Power-Grid and ROCCAT news, open the help section and view general information about the software.

Please check the change log for further details.

Additional Power-Grid content also available

With the new update to Power-Grid, users will also be able to take advantage of brand new, ROCCAT-created Grids for the app. The following Grids are now available:

– ROCCAT Track pad – Make your smartphone a laptop-like track pad for your PC
– ROCCAT Ryos Grid – Control eight amazing effects for the per-key illumination of the Ryos MK Pro mechanical gaming keyboard

Command Modern Air/Naval Operations Gets HUGE Update

command-title-screen

Arlington, VT, 20th December, 2013 – Since its release in September this year, Command Modern Air/Naval Operations (OUR REVIEW HERE) has been praised as a ‘rare thing’ (Rock Paper Shotgun), a ‘true gem’ (Gamers Hall) and ‘a seriously fun, intense, involving simulation of modern naval combat with nearly infinite replay value’ (Armchair General). For developers Warfare Sims (www.warfaresims.com) though, this wasn’t enough. The team engaged with the fans, involved the community and effectively started a brand new development process to take this immense project to perfection.

Since the release of v1.01 (which addressed the most immediate concerns WRT reliability/performance/functionality), the WS dev team has been relentlessly working on Command, as evidenced by the breakneck pace of private & public releases. The next official update, v1.02, incorporates myriads of improvements based directly on feedback from the entire wargaming community (customers, reviewers and prospective buyers alike).

With the release of v1.02, Command extends its lead against any other title in the genre (incl. longtime stalwarts of the niche) even more and further establishes itself as the undisputed heavyweight champion of modern air/nav wargaming. It was already a bargain, now it’s a screaming steal.

Improvements:

* VASTLY BETTER performance & stability, on all aspects of the game (startup, UI/map & simulation engine)

* VASTLY IMPROVED user interface with lots of new features, fixes & changes in every aspect (map, unit control, DB viewer etc.) straight from user feedback

* HUNDREDS of bugs & problems fixed

MORE POWERFUL scenario editor & mission editor

* MORE configurable realism options (e.g. unlimited aircraft weapons at bases) for people who want to quickly experiment

* MORE simulation realism with new features like variable crew proficiency, improved sonar modelling, more AI & doctrine options and other additions & fixes

* COUNTLESS database additions & tweaks

* IMPROVED & reworked versions of official scenarios

MORE scenarios, MORE DB images & descriptions

* IMPROVED multimedia experience with new sound effects & optional background music
