ubisoft-e3-booth-2010-6-16-22-20-13

Toronto – October 20, 2014 Today, Ubisoft announced that after 10 years of collaboration, the company and Jade Raymond have agreed to pursue future opportunities separately. Alexandre Parizeau, a founding team member of the Ubisoft Toronto studio, replaces Raymond as managing director.

During her tenure at Ubisoft, Raymond was producer on the first Assassin’s Creed® (2004-2007) and served as executive producer on Assassin’s Creed® II (2008-2009), Watch_Dogs® (2008-2009) and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Blacklist (2010-2013). She also opened the Ubisoft Toronto studio and served as its managing director since 2009, a role she will turn over to Parizeau starting October 29.

“I’ve spent 10 extraordinary years at Ubisoft, and I am proud to have been part of many of the best teams in the industry making truly remarkable games,” said Raymond. “This is one of the hardest decisions of my career, but the Toronto studio is strong and on a solid path. I’m confident that now is a good time for me to transition leadership of the studio to Alex and to pursue my other ambitions and new opportunities. Stay tuned for more on what’s next for me, but for now, I’d like to thank Ubisoft for its partnership through the years, and I wish them the very best in all their next endeavors.”

With more than 15 years in the game industry, Parizeau has an impressive range of experience across many facets of the business. As a founding core member of Ubisoft Toronto studio, Parizeau is a proven and trusted team builder and leader. He also served as senior producer on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Blacklist, and producer on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction® and Rainbow Six® Vegas.  Parizeau will report to Yannis Mallat, CEO of Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto, and will oversee Toronto’s continued role as a key contributor to the development of some of the biggest brands at Ubisoft, as well as a number of unannounced projects.

“On behalf of Ubisoft, I’d like to thank Jade for her leadership and many contributions over the years, and wish her all the best in her next adventures,” said Mallat. “The Toronto studio is a key part of the Ubisoft global network, and Alex has been at the heart of the studio’s growth over the years. He was the obvious choice to lead this talented group of people as they continue to develop amazing games.”

The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride 2014 Black Carpet Event and Review

lahh-378 copy

One of our favorite Halloween attractions is the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, produced by the folks at Ten Thirtyone Productions. You may recall reading our interview with their COO, Melissa Meyers, from several weeks ago. Recently, we were invited to their black carpet event and media night where we would get to snap some pictures of celebrities walking a, you guessed it, black carpet as well as the chance to check out the hayride for ourselves. The night started well, with the black carpet event. Be sure to check out our image gallery at the end of this post to see the stars as well as images from the event itself.

This year’s LA Haunted Hayride features two new walkthrough mazes as well as a re-themed hayride. Subtitled “Echoes from the Rift”, this year’s hayride is a wonderful, eclectic mix of scenes and gags that will scare and entertain. There are some awesome performers on flexible poles that sway (I’ll not spoil where or what they are doing) and even a more thoughtful scene of military zombies from throughout history that hand letters addressed to loved ones to guests on the hay wagon as it passes by. I mention that scene in particular as, I had no idea what it was all about when we went through it. It was only after talking to one of the event managers after riding it that the explained it to me and it made tons more sense. We expected the zombies to be scaring us, but the meaning of the scene was far deeper than that.

The finale of the hayride was creative and well-executed, but I missed the humor of past incarnations. Last year, they ended the hayride on an awesome note, with what appeared to be a very morose and horror-filled scene being transformed quickly into an entertaining clown-fest. This year’s hayride is a far more serious ride. Not bad, mind you, just different – I prefer the humor scattered throughout the ride a little more.

The food has always been one of the best parts of the LA Haunted Hayride but unfortunately, this year, it took a step down a notch. While there is a wide array of food, many of the items are doused in a creamy mayo, chipotle sauce, or sour cream. Even the caramel apples were odd – instead of being an apple dipped in caramel, it was a sliced apple drizzled with runny caramel sauce (not the same as caramel) that just didn’t hit the spot. That being said, the deep-fried pumpkin spice doughnut hole/beignet thing was very tasty as was the burger.

During our evening at the LA Haunted Hayride, we were treated to the awesome percussion of Blood Drums. Blood Drums used to be over at Knott’s Scary Farm but that park unwisely chose not to have them back this year. Their loss is the LA Haunted Hayride’s gain as they continuously put on an energetic and lively show. The attraction’s “Purgatory” common area is also home to fortune tellers, a scary-go-round, pumpkin carving tent, and a cool photo booth attraction filled with various, torture scenes to insert yourselves into.

The LA Haunted Hayride’s two new walkthrough mazes, the “House of the Horsemen” and the “Seven Sins Sideshow” are both welcome additions – though on the night we attended, the cue lines for both were snail’s pace slow. I highly recommend you shell out the extra cash for the VIP/front of the line pass. It is well worth the money – even if only to get past the super-long line waiting to get on the hayride itself.

Overall, the 2014 Los Angeles Haunted Hayride is still one of my favorite haunted attractions in the Southern California area. While I don’t think it was as successful, from the perspective of an overall experience, as it was last year, it is still an amazing time where you can spend all evening at the closest thing you will find in Southern California to a traditional, Midwest Halloween carnival.

The LA Haunted Hayride runs various nights from now until October 31st, so check out the event’s official website for full attraction and ticket details.

Crooked Horn Outfitters Crossback Sling and Holster System for DSLR Cameras

1058608

One of the coolest DSLR accessories I have been able to use lately is the Crossback Sling and Holster System from the people at Crooked Horn Outfitters. While several companies make DSLR camera slings, this is the first time I have seen a sling and holster combination. Retailing for $124.99, the Crossback DSLR camera system allows the photographer to have quick access to his or her camera while at the same time allowing it to be stowed away when not in use. When I opened the package from Crooked Horn Outfitters, I was a bit underwhelmed. The system is comprised of the sling, stabilizing strap, belt, and holster unit and nothing looks all that impressive or flashy.

Putting everything together and wearing it, however, made the benefits and price point of the system completely apparent and justified. I take photos at events – usually big ones like Comic-Con, E3, or CES. I come into contact with thousands of people on a daily basis as I weave in and out of crowds, snapping pictures along the way to my appointments. Having my hands free to use is of the utmost importance, both for personal protection as well as utility. With the Crossback, I can transition from smartphone camera to DSLR camera in a very timely manner, which is something I do quite often as we also put out pictures on social media. If you are an outdoor photographer who goes hiking or into areas far from civilization, you would be seriously remiss not to check the Crossback out. In fact, it was practically made for photographers just like you. Mountaineering, hiking, camping, the Crossback holster is perfect.

IMG_399355

The sling and stabilizer strap are both made of a durable nylon material that won’t rip anytime soon and the belt is a durable nylon belt that can easily withstand the weight of the camera resting in the holster. The belt buckle, however, is a little on the flimsy side, feeling like a cheap plastic. That being said, in all my wearing of the system, it never broke or failed, it just doesn’t feel as rugged as the rest of the Crossback system. The holster is padded and will not scratch your camera up while using it.

That is, with the exception of one issue: The diameter of the holster opening. I use several types of lenses in my travels. 35mm and 50mm prime lenses, an 18-55mm kit lens, and an 11-16mm wide angle lens. Unfortunately, the wide angle lens has a very hard time in fitting into the holster. It has a 77mm filter end that just will not insert into the holster without two hands to push it down inside. I would have liked to have seen the holster be just a smidge wider to accommodate those types of lenses. Now, admittedly, that lens is pretty wide as lenses go – I had no issues with any of my other lenses, including a 55-200mm long lens.

Aside from this issue, the Crossback DSLR holster system from Crooked Horn Outfitters makes active photography very easy by freeing up your hands when you need them, allowing you not to worry about if your camera is flopping around banging into things. With the Crossback, it stays in place until you need it. The Crossback DSLR camera holster system is available now at both Crooked Horn Outfitters official website as well as e-tailers like B&HPhoto.
