Warhammer: End Times Vermintide – Dwarf Ranger Action Reel

Warhammer-End-Times-Vermintide-Screenshots-1

October 12, 2015 – Independent developer Fatshark today released the fourth of five Action Reels, showcasing gameplay from each of the five heroes playable in Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide. The latest Action Reel is of Bardin Goreksson, the Dwarf Ranger hailing from the Grey Mountains. Dwarves are often considered a gregarious folk, prideful and not afraid to offend, and few are more so than Bardin. He is not the vindictive type or cruel in nature, but he has a habit of belittling his comrades through sheer ignorance and his robust attitude. He will oftentimes be the loudest in the group, even if silence would have been preferable. If negotiations go sour, the Dwarf Ranger is the first with his axe out and swinging.

In Vermintide, the city of Ubersreik is under siege as players select from a band of five heroes with different play-styles and abilities, all equipped with unique gear and personalities. Working together cooperatively, players must use their individual attributes to survive an apocalyptic invasion from hordes of relentless, power hungry Skaven, across a range of environments stretching from the top of the Magnus Tower to the bowels of the Under Empire.

Vermintide will launch on Steam for Windows PC on October 23rd and is now available to pre-order in a Standard and Collector’s edition. To secure your pre-order please visit the Warhammer: The End Times – Vermintide Steam page: store.steampowered.com/app/235540/

2015 LA Haunted Hayride Black Carpet and Review

la-haunted-hayride-2015-267 copy

Our evening at the 2015 Los Angeles Haunted Hayride began as it usually does, with their black carpet event. We arrived to the Griffith Park Old Zoo location just prior to dusk and checked-in with the media desk. We got situated on the press line side of the red carpet and waited in the sprinkling rain for the celebrities to arrive. One by one, they came and walked the carpet. We got the chance to see Bridget Marquardt, Bryan Greenburg, and Elaine Hendrix – to name just a few. After taking photographs for a while, it was time to venture into the event location proper and check out its various attractions. The LA Haunted Hayride offers three ticket tiers – General admission for $43, VIP admission for $59, and a hayride only ticket for $30.

The LA Haunted Hayride has consistently been one of my favorite Halloween attractions for several years now – very sadly, until this one. Unfortunately, the entire narrative of the hayride attraction is muddled and inconsistent with no real payoff. The queue line is dotted with monitors telling about the history of the mythical “boogeyman”, so I fully expected the hayride to be a search for or, perhaps, an escape from the boogeyman. The different vignettes that your hay cart passes by seem disjointed and, even though we got teased of the boogeyman’s approach near the end of the ride, there is no climax or resolution featuring the creature itself – it just falls a bit flat for my liking. Also, the hayride was missing some of the technical ingenuity from years past.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-220 copy

Past hayrides featured growing demons, burn victims still smoldering as they attacked the hay cart, and even crow people that descended on the cart via giant, flexible poles. This year seemed to lack that magical, “how did they do that” factor. Additionally, they have erected these black vinyl-draped fences along a lot of the hayride route. This is a mistake as the outlying forest of the Griffith Park Old Zoo location is really creepy and seeing it adds to the overall ride experience. Even seeing glimpses of the next vignette in the distance adds to the suspense of what might happen to riders. TenThirtyOne Productions was very focused on getting the New York Haunted Hayride online this year and, in its natal form, I can’t help but wonder if it took some of the work away from the LA experience. My hope is that next year, after the New York Haunted Hayride has had its base infrastructure set up, that the designers and creators of the experience can more equally share their time between coasts. That is not to say that the hayride is devoid of scares – not by any means. Several people in our hay cart were screaming like banshees as the monsters terrorized them. Overall, the hayride just didn’t live up to its previous incarnations this year.

(As an aside, I must confess that I am terribly saddened to have had to write that preceding paragraph. I have been a fan of the LA Haunted Hayride for a long time – it is the only haunted attraction in Southern California that successfully merged the feel and look of a Midwestern Halloween carnival with modern effects and scares.)

After the hayride, we ventured over to Jack’s Carving Shack where, for a small fee, guests can carve pumpkins. The first Sunday night of the event’s run saw very little in the way of crowds, so there were really no lines for anything. This, undoubtedly, will change as we get more into October proper. The hayride can attract over 60,000 people a season, so be sure to get there early if you attend. Last year, we saw all manner of cool-looking pumpkin designs and it is always fun to see how creative people can get with their creations.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-199 copy

The “Grub Shack” is back this year and the menu hasn’t changed since last time. It’s all vegan-friendly, so don’t expect your burger to be real meat. That being said, the “Pumpkin Head Fritters” are delicious. Unfortunately, they are still using cold caramel sauce on the “Candyman Apples” – a mistake. I hope next year they select hot caramel to drizzle on them. I know hot caramel can be tricky, but the pay-off in taste experience is well worth it. The “High Tension Taquitos” where also good as were the “Misery Mac & Cheese Balls”. Do yourself a favor and just order the mac & cheese balls plain – sans ranch or BBQ sauce. The “cheap” flavor of the sauces detract from the crispy, cheesy goodness of the cheese balls. Also, they should bring back the hot chocolate that the “Grub Shack” had a couple of years ago – nothing sets the Halloween mood like candied or caramel apples and hot cocoa on a cool Fall evening.

Here is another example of where the LA Haunted Hayride needs to regain a bit of its previous “heart” from past years. In past hayrides, the event would see these concession workers walking around the grounds selling things like candied apples, popcorn, sodas, etc. What was cool was that they were all themed and costumed in some way. I loved the candied apple hawker’s mask that looked like two candied apples were shoved into his eye sockets. This year, there was simply a guy who looked like he walked in from the public park with an ice chest of sodas and a stool sitting on the side of the event grounds – no uniform or costume. In fact, I was tempted to call security at one point because he didn’t look like he was an official worker of the LA Haunted Hayride or its food vendor. Then I saw a recent image from the NY Haunted Hayride and, sure enough, there was the candied apple mask. I do believe they split their resources a ton this year in getting the East Coast event off the ground.

la-haunted-hayride-2015-271 copy

The “In-Between” dark maze has returned and is as winding and disorientating as ever. Guests are given a small lamp and are made to wear masks inside. The cool part about this haunted house is that the monsters are wearing the same kind of masks. So, guests are never sure if they are running into monsters or other lost souls trying to navigate their way through the dark experience.

The new “Trick Or Treat” haunted house offers guests a chance to engage in trick or treating, LA Haunted Hayride style. Guests move from scene to scene, receiving either a trick or a treat – the treats in this case being real candy! The timing of some of the gags was a bit off but, overall, this was interesting to go through and experience.

“House of Shadows” is also a new haunted house at the LA Haunted Hayride. A semi-escape room style experience, groups of guests are made to navigate the dark interior looking for the boogeyman. There are several neat little gimmicks throughout the haunted house and, overall, this was the most successful of the various attractions at the LA Haunted Hayride. Definitely check this one out if you get up to the LA Haunted Hayride this year.

Overall, this year’s Los Angeles Haunted Hayride feels like it has taken a backseat to TenThirtyOne’s New York Haunted Hayride. They seem to have received a lot of costumes, masks, and props from the LA experience and it has suffered for it. I would call this season a growing pain for the event – you will have fun, but you may be letdown if you attended the events previous incarnations.

ROCCAT Unveils Kova Gaming Mouse

roccat-kova-mouse

Hamburg, 8 October 2015 – ROCCAT kicks off the release season in 2015 with the launch of its all new Kova performance gaming mouse, the successor to the popular Kova[+]. The Kova[+] took the gaming scene by storm when it was released in 2010 and went on to develop a hardcore cult following thanks to its streamlined aesthetics. Forged using the legacy of its predecessor as its blueprint, the new Kova represents a re-imagined fan favorite for gamers who value pure performance above all else.

The new Kova features a sleek, ambidextrous design suitable for left- and right-handers alike. Built for power and speed, the mouse places a strong emphasis on raw performance. The result is streamlined, sports-car like aesthetics with doubled-up core functionality.

The all new Kova – doubled up functionality

The mouse is equipped with a latest generation Pro-Optic R6 sensor with 3500 native dpi featuring Overdrive mode. Overdrive allows for a stable dpi double-up, resulting in an effective dpi of 7000. This technology is made possible by the powerful Turbo Core V2 32-bit ARM-based MCU in the engine room. Two Smart Cast buttons sit on either side of the Kova’s mouse 1 and mouse 2 buttons. They form part of an overall intuitive button layout designed for lightning-fast reactions to in-game events. Optimally placed within finger-tip reach, the Smart Cast buttons add a new level of reflexive control for fast-paced games and facilitate rapid combos and easy switching between, for example, weapons or ammo types, and so on.

The Kova features double the illumination power thanks to a vivid RGB lighting system. The 16.8 million color illumination suite lets you configure the scroll wheel and mouse rim lighting independently of each other.

ROCCAT’s famous Easy-Shift[+] technology takes the Kova’s total number of button functions up to an impressive 22. The mouse is available in both black and white and is compatible with ROCCAT’s new Swarm driver system.

ROCCAT founder and CEO, René Korte, comments: “The Kova[+] was cherished by gamers for its sleek aesthetics, and that’s something we wanted to keep when re-imagining the mouse for the games of today. The new Kova is a worthy successor to the name, carrying on the tradition of streamlined performance. It features a high-octane, sports-car like build with staggering power under the hood. We’re sure it’ll delight hardcore gamers as well as fans of the original.” The all new ROCCAT Kova will retail for 59,99 Euro and hits stores worldwide 17 November 2015.

Knott’s Scary Farm 2015 Review

knotts-scary-farm-026 copy

Knott’s Scary Farm pretty much invented the theme park haunted event back in 1973. Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds, as well as paved the way for a host of other events to share their scares with guests each Halloween season. That is the problem, of course: By being the first one of anything, you are constantly having to up your own game to keep ahead of all the others that came after. Did Knott’s Berry Farm push ahead of the pack this year?

Haunted Mazes

Paranormal Inc.

Paranormal Inc. takes guests through the Hayden Hill asylum where the stars of a hit paranormal investigations TV show are doing a live event. Things go wrong and park guests become the targets for all manner of supernatural entities. This haunted house begins very strong with a terrific, staged opening room to set the ton of the experience. After, the walk-through portions of the haunted house feel smooth and feature a ton of jump scares and some really cool practical stunts. Additionally, I loved the set design in this haunted house – it was definitely a step up for Knott’s Scary Farm and I hope their future haunted houses follow suit.

The Dead of Winter

This haunted house takes place in the Cloud 9 ballroom and features great air conditioning… That was pretty much all I could say for the maze on opening night.  I don’t know what was said to the talent but, on the second night I attended, the maze was quite a bit scarier, with talent having settled into their characters more. Also, it seemed like they might have turned the lights down a little bit, which helps a lot in terms of setting the mood for terror. While not my favorite maze of this year’s Knott’s Scary Farm, it definitely is doing a lot better than I first experienced.

knotts-scary-farm-179 copy

My Bloody Clementine

My Bloody Clementine sees the return of live, scare actors inside the venerable Calico Mine Ride attraction in several years. The overall set work in the mine ride is minimal, but the superb lighting design helps to push what’s there to the next level. Unfortunately, while there are a few live scare actors inside the attraction this year, they are fairly spread out and don’t do a lot of scaring, more just creepy pacing. I miss the days where the park’s log ride and mine ride attractions had FULL haunted mazes built in them and each brimmed with horrific monsters, terrorizing the ride cars as they passed by. My Bloody Clementine is, hopefully, the start of that returning!

Tooth Fairy

Still extremely disturbing, the Tooth Fairy haunted house has grotesque imagery, jump scares, and a creepy-as-hell titular character – all key ingredients in a successful haunt maze. The unsettling sound of dental drills makes the maze just that much scarier to experience. I hate to see what new things they will bring to the maze next year – the whole thing creeps me out (which, in this circumstance, is a good thing)!

Voodoo – The Order of the Serpent

Voodoo still has the best facade of any haunted house ever created by the park and, this year, the inside of the maze has been overhauled as well! Last year, we loved the multi-pathed experience. Unfortunately, it seems that it created more problems than not, so Voodoo only has a single route this year. The good part is that the maze still looks beautiful and has plenty of creepy moments to keep you entertained. Also, this maze has a brand-new “skeleton key” room this year, which is a lot more entertaining than the previous key room from last year.

knotts-scary-farm-181 copy

Trick or Treat

With two big changes this year, Trick or Treat is still a terrific haunted house which takes guests through the estate of the park’s green witch character. Her gaggle of trick or treating minions provide most of the jump scares throughout the attraction, but the witch herself makes plenty of appearances as she calls upon the forces of darkness.

Pinocchio Unstrung

Not much seems to have changes in this twisted take on the classic children’s tale. There are twisted marionettes, crazy townsfolk, mutant creatures, and a lot more. I wasn’t a big fan of this maze when it debuted some years ago but it has grown on me since then like a pair of ears and a tail (Ed Note: Yes, that was a lame Pinocchio reference).

Black Magic

Black Magic has some new sights for guests to experience, and is very solid in its scares and creeps. The dark magicians of the maze and their assistants are all very intense and I loved the set design – especially some of the new rooms. However, I missed the special skeleton key room of years past. Now, you just walk around the creepy seance table instead of sitting down and taking part in it.

knotts-scary-farm-182 copy

Forevermore

Forevermore, the brainchild of one of Knott’s Scary Farm’s former designers, has never resonated well with me. I thought it was boring and bland. They have tweaked it around this year and the whole maze is better for it. While still not my favorite maze of the bunch, it wasn’t bad.

The Gunslinger’s Grave: A Blood Moon Rises

I have a love/hate relationship with The Gunslinger’s Grave. As a concept, it never scared me much as “normal” people generally don’t frighten me. This year, the park has included a huge heaping helping of the paranormal in the maze and I loved every cowboy hat-wearing minute of it. Definitely check The Gunslinger’s Grave: A Blood Moon Rises out when you go to the park.

Street Zones

Aside from the mazes, the park has two and a half scare zones to engage with guests as they walk around the park proper: Ghost Town Streets, Carnevil, and Fiesta De Los Muertos. Ghost Town Streets hasn’t changed much in recent years – not that it’s a bad thing. The fog permeates the Old West inspired buildings and the talent has plenty of hiding places along its dark nooks and crannies. Carnevil is still hit-or-miss in terms of its decor and presentation. With as brightly-lit as the Boardwalk area of the park is, it is hard to get scared when you can see the evil clowns coming from a great distance away. Fiesta De Los Muertos should be a lot scarier than it presently is. Unfortunately, the character design is uninspired, with most of the talent simply wearing sugar skull masks. Also, there is a dance/DJ stage area in the middle of this area and the cranking beats just act as distraction from focusing on the talent that are trying to scare patrons.

knotts-scary-farm-194 copy

My critique on the street zones should be looked at in terms of street zone decor and overall presentation – not a review of street talent. Being a monster in a street zone like this is an organic process. Reviewing them at the beginning of the run will yield an entirely different outcome than reviewing them a little ways into the run, after they have all hit their spooky strides. What can be said was that it was opening night, and everyone had a ton of energy.

That being said, I still miss Camp Snoopy as a scare zone!

Special Ops: Infected – Patient Zero

Special Ops: Infected is now in its second year as a Knott’s Scary Farm attraction. Its first first year saw horrible congestion and line control problems, as well as a big issue with cheap infra red guns that had a host of problems from a functional level. Additionally, there were a lot of monsters without IR sensors to illuminate when “shot”. Still available to anyone who can scramble for an appointment time slot prior to rope drop, I was very excited to see how the experience evolved.

The first night I went to the park, I couldn’t even get in with how crowded it was. My 9:30PM appointment time slot meant nothing and, thankfully, the park’s awesome marketing folks, Leidy Arevalo and Jason Soyster, were nice enough to have us back out a week later to try again. This time, we got our time slot and rushed over to the entrance to the experience. The first week seems to have weighed heavily on Special Ops: Infected as everything feels super-rushed, right from the start when you get your guns. We were all issued new laser tag rifles (dubbed the “Battle Rifle Pro” from its manufacturer), which was a lot more well-made than the previous guns used by the attraction. These guns have a reload button on the front hand guard as well as a health meter and ammo counter as well as fire mode indicator. They even have picatinny rails in case you want to add a red dot (although none of the guests had one to bring in). Unfortunately, they don’t have any kind of iron sight system and, being a bullpup design coupled with a short muzzle, it is hard to get a close enough cheek weld to aim down the muzzle. But, I digress…

knotts-scary-farm-173 copy

The “briefing” commenced and our squad leaders barked out commands about how the gun system’s health worked and that we should all stay between the two of them throughout. Then we were rushed into the area that is normally called “Camp Snoopy” during regular operating hours. It all kind of fell apart from there. We were constantly yelled out to keep moving and never given any real objective as to what we were supposed to accomplish. It felt like the squad leaders were ordered to get groups through as quickly as possible with no regard for score or actually accomplishing mission goals. When we reached the extract/finish point, a loudspeaker informed us we failed our mission. Mission? What mission? One of the squad leaders told us we didn’t pick up a vial of “patient zero’s DNA”. I didn’t even see a vial to pick up as they had us moving so fast through the whole thing.

Additionally, there seemed to be a huge flaw in the health/death system of the attractions’s Battle Rifle Pro guns. The system is setup so that when you get within a few feet of a zombie wearing one of these special neck sensor bands that you lose health. The problem was that – even if a zombie is dead, you health keeps getting lowered as if you were being attacked. What this means is that you will just run through most of Special Ops: Infected trying to avoid zombies instead of forming firing lines and shooting zombies (which is what most people are coming to do). Hopefully this is just an easily correctable issue as it definitely detracts from the experience. If they slowed down Special Ops: Infected and fixed the dead zombie damage problem, I would be raving about it right now – it has so much potential.

I think that, next year, Special Ops: Infected should become an up-charge attraction with a set number of groups per night. That way, guests could get more out of their mission as they wouldn’t be so rushed and the park wouldn’t have to deal with the awful line control issues.

knotts-scary-farm-178 copy

Shows

This year sees the return of Elvira as well as the park’s venerable stage show, “The Hanging”. “Elvira’s Asylum” is a terrific return to form for the performer, with her having a lot more stage time than last year’s show. Additionally, the overall pacing of Elvira’s show is very solid and attention-grabbing. You should definitely see it when you attend. “The Hanging: Straight Outta Calico” riffed on pop culture fads and phenomena of 2015 with lots of yucks – the majority of which went over well and garnered at the very least a chuckle. The show tries to pack a lot into a short length of time, but moves along at breakneck speeds. I missed seeing a show in the Bird Cage Theater this year – maybe one day they could get “Dr. Cleaver” to come back?

Overall

Knott’s Scary Farm brings a very strong showing in 2015, with lots of new experiences for guests to scream at. The event runs on various nights until October 31, 2015. Tickets are available both at the park and online, at their official website.

Players will journey as the first human to tame the wilderness and rise above extinction.  Along the way, they will have to hunt for food, master fire, fend off fierce predators, craft weapons and tools partly from the bones of slain beasts and face off against other tribes to conquer Oros.

“The interesting thing about Far Cry is that it’s flexible.  So when a team proposed to explore the idea of a Far Cry taking place during the Stone Age, we just said ‘let’s hear it!’  And the more we heard about it, the more we realized how much of a damn good idea it actually was,” said Dan Hay, executive producer, Ubisoft.

“The Stone Age is the perfect setting for a Far Cry game,” said Jean-Christophe Guyot, creative director, Ubisoft.  “Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless and savage frontier.  The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain.  That came with conflict, against other humans of course, but also against nature itself.”
