Starbreeze Sells Dead By Daylight to Behaviour Interactive for $16M

STOCKHOLM 21 March 2018 – Starbreeze has today decided to sell the publishing rights to the game Dead by Daylight to the developer, Behaviour Interactive Inc (Behaviour). Starbreeze will receive an initial payment of USD 4 million, followed by an additional USD 12 million paid in stages as royalties of 65 percent of game revenues. The deal will accelerate cash flows to Starbreeze from the game, which will strengthen Starbreeze earnings and free up capital for new projects. Starbreeze strategy to widen the game portfolio with additional publishing titles has not changed.

The publishing rights to the game will not be transferred to Behaviour until Starbreeze has been paid the entire consideration of USD 16 million. Until then, Starbreeze will retain control over the games payment streams and remain the official publisher of the game. Per 1st of January 2018, Behaviour however assumes the obligations of Starbreeze in connection with the game under the Publishing Agreement, including all development and marketing costs. Behaviour has the option to remit final payment of the remaining balance due at any time and thereby take over the rights at an earlier date.

“The publishing title Dead by Daylight has been a stellar deal for Starbreeze. We initially invested USD 2 million in developing the game, which has sold more than 3 million copies since release and generated approximately SEK 345 million in net sales. We are now concluding the partnership with Behaviour in a favourable manner and Dead by Daylight has become an even better deal for Starbreeze,” says Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson Klint. “In addition to securing and accelerating our revenues from the game, we will incur no costs related to further development and marketing. Through this deal, we expect the profits from the game to exceed our projection for the remaining lifespan for the title.”

“Our strategy to widen the game portfolio with additional publishing titles has not changed. We received an attractive offer from Behaviour that we have assessed as better for us in both the long and short terms. We aim to be ‘The Good Publisher’ and are happy to be a part of giving external development partners the opportunity to own their own future. It has been a joy working with Behaviour and we wish them continued success,” says Mikael Nermark, COO and Executive Vice President at Starbreeze.

According to the original publishing agreement, Starbreeze and Behaviour split net revenues from the game 50/50 after development and marketing costs. Revenues from Dead by Daylight amounted to SEK 202 million in 2017, which was split 50/50 with Behaviour. During the same period, Starbreeze incurred costs attributable to the game of SEK 34 million, resulting in a surplus to Starbreeze for the game of SEK 66 million in 2017. The effect of the deal on Starbreeze revenues and profit will be determined by how the sales of the game develop.

Dead by Daylight was initially released for PC in 2016 and the console version was released in 2017. Ten downloadable content (DLC) bundles have since been released. If the game follows the usual trend curve, sales revenues will decline in future years.

Upon expiration of the publishing agreement, Starbreeze will no longer have any rights connected to the game apart from rights to further compensation if the game is launched in China before 2020.

“We are incredibly proud of everything we have accomplished on Dead by Daylight, building a strong IP that has sold over 3 million copies. Our community is the backbone of our success and we are totally committed to continue investing and growing the game. We would like to thank the team at Starbreeze for their collaboration and efforts to jointly make Dead by Daylight a success,” says Rémi Racine, CEO and Executive Producer, Behaviour Interactive.

Arma 3 Laws of War DLC Raises Over $170K for ICRC

March 21, 2018 – As pledged last August, independent games developer Bohemia Interactive has donated half of its 2017 net revenue from direct sales of the Arma 3 Laws of War DLC to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The total amount raised is USD 176,667 (one-hundred and seventy-six thousand, six-hundred and sixty-seven US dollars – approximately EUR 143,543 or GBP 126,016).

To further celebrate the special occasion, the studio published a special blog post, which includes a new story trailer for the DLC, plus an infographic with statistics on how people played Laws of War’s mini-campaign.

“With over two billion gamers worldwide, video games have an incredible potential to convey the importance of international humanitarian law (IHL). The collaboration between Bohemia interactive and the ICRC has been extraordinary and we have learned a lot from each other by exchanging ideas and our respective expertise on how to incorporate IHL into a video game. The success of the Arma 3 Laws of War DLC has shown us that video games are one of the many ways to reach new audiences and call attention to the fact that wars do have limits and rules. We are also very grateful that Bohemia Interactive will donate $176,667 to the ICRC, which shows their commitment to support our work, to help people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence in over eighty countries.” said Helen Durham, Director for International Law and Policy at the ICRC.

Bohemia Interactive’s CEO, Marek Spanel: “We knew this DLC’s theme might seem a bit unusual, but we also felt that it has a rightful place in a game like Arma 3. At the same time, our community normally expects more traditional content you’d see in a military game, such as new weapons, tanks, and helicopters. That has made it even more amazing to see the immense level of player support for the Laws of War DLC, which really shows again how both games and the gaming audience have matured. If you also consider that some of our players are in the military or might pursue a military career in the future, then we’re glad this DLC has been able to increase awareness for this important topic. And being able to also make a financial contribution to the ICRC’s efforts is a great bonus.”

Arma 3 Laws of War is a downloadable content pack for Bohemia Interactive’s military game Arma 3. It explores a different perspective on the battlefield by introducing a fictional humanitarian NGO faction calledIDAP (International Development & Aid Project) to the game. The package also includes a new van, a drone, outfits and gear, and a range of decorative objects such as shelter tents and medical or food supplies. One of the main highlights of the DLC is the “Remnants of War” mini-campaign. Here, players take on the role of IDAP explosive specialist Nathan MacDade, and uncover what happened in the town of Oreokastro – witnessing the long-term consequences of war and particularly the effects of mines and unexploded ordnance.

Furthermore, the Laws of War DLC implemented a free Showcase scenario on the topic of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). This singleplayer scenario, which is presented as a virtual reality training course hosted by IDAP, aims to provide all Arma 3 players with the opportunity to become more familiar with the DLC’s complex and serious theme.

More information about the Arma 3 Laws of War DLC is available at arma3.com/dlc/lawsofwar.

Built in power conductors on the battery packs allow for simple charging, activated the very moment the controller comes into contact with the dock, and negating the need to put undue pressure on the integrated Micro USB ports. Once again, integrated LED lighting informs the gamer as to the charging status of each controller, while the dock itself (available in black or white configurations), perfectly matches the design of the hardware.

  • Xbox One Battery:Kit

Quick, simple and ingenious, the Xbox One Battery:Kit effortlessly snaps into place, replacing batteries and the battery cover of up to two official Xbox controllers. Available in black or white configurations to match controller design, the Battery:Kit features twin, powerful 700 mAh high-capacity batteries, providing up to eight hours of gaming between charges, far more than found on most competitor products. Integrated Micro USB port and charging cable included, allows for simple charging via any of the USB ports featured on the console. Integrated LED lighting gives quick and simple indication of charge status for each battery pack.

  • Xbox One Battery:Kit Pro

For those serious about gaming, the Battery:Kit Pro ups the ante, offering a high-capacity battery, holding a massive 1500 mAh charge for up to 12 hours of play! Once again available in black or white configurations, the Battery:Kit Pro boasts the same features and high quality engineering as the regular Battery:Kit, providing years of battery free gaming.

Nick Repenning, CEO for snakebyte USA commented, “The current generation of consoles continues to break new grounds with software and applications which demand ever greater time commitments, seeing us using our hardware for longer periods of time. It’s imperative that battery technology keeps up with this increased pressure, and our new range of high-capacity power accessories have been meticulously designed to provide gamers with the power and reliability they deserve.”
