Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex-First Assault Online Review

When our Editor-in-Chief asked if I wanted to play a first-person shooter called “First Assault Online” I said sure since I had a bit of time available.  Then when I downloaded the game I found out it was “Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex-First Assault Online” and I was so happy I had taken the review.  One of the first anime movies that I really got into was Ghost In The Shell and I have enjoyed watching the televisions series on Adult Swim particularly when it came to Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.  It is well written, the animation is really well done and it had a habit of being rough on it’s characters developing their true grit.  Sometimes as a show goes along they will stray away from the core of a character’s beliefs to make it fit a storyline.  Not a problem here though, this show is always solid.  So here was my chance to play a game based off of one of my all time favorite anime shows, will Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex-First Assault Online hold up to the series?  time to find out.

First Assault:

I understand why my EIC shortened the game name since it is a pretty big mouthful so until the end I will just be calling it First Assault Online.  First things first it definitely feels like you were just dropped into a firefight in an episode of GITS.  You use actual characters from the show and futuristic talents that feel like they should belong to each of the characters that they are assigned to.  The voices are great, the locations fit and futuristic, anime is spot on, it really is a gift to fans of the show to be able to play it.  Even when I was off my game and not pulling my best KDR I was still having fun just being in the world and fighting in it.  You fight cyborgs and robots which have a gratifying mechanical breakup instead of bloodshed which feels like it belongs here.  I wasn’t able to find anything that didn’t fit the show and it’s atmosphere.

369200_screenshots_20161001024236_1

Once you get past that the game is really a straight forward FPS.  You unlock weapons and as well as attachments, you level for new talents and prizes, you try to get them with getting got.  The physics are some of the most solid of any FPS I have played, I can’t think of any instances where I thought otherwise.  It has a built-in anti-cheat program which hopefully is catching most of the cheaters and probably most importantly the best auto-balancing systems I have seen.  Maybe it is because the classes are so well balanced but I never saw a blowout game, even ones I was choking on someone else was pulling up the slack.  Not sure what algorithms it uses but I was impressed and this review probably would have been done sooner if I could have convinced myself I didn’t need another day of play when it wasn’t needed but just wanted.  This can be an addictive play.  It even seemed to detect spawn campers quick and shift spawn points.

I guess one of the only things I could ask for would be a single player campaign, just to go through so GITS stories.  That puts a wistful smile on my face when I think about the idea but as a general rule a game needs to be great at single player or great at multiplayer, it has to be a huge franchise to be both and this is a play for free with pay for more faster unlocks and experience.  When you consider that the fact that this game is so good is amazing.

Last Shot (For Now):

Time for me to get back to playing it but first a quick summary.  Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex-First Assault Online is one of the best first-person shooter games I have ever seen and is exceptionally true to its anime roots.  The game is free when it would have been a steal at $15 so you might want to buy a bit of unlocks and extra experience just to make sure this game gets to stick around.  It’s well balanced, has a great anti-cheat and it’s auto-balancing is some of the best on the market.  Okay, time to head back in game.

The Assembly – PlayStation VR Launch Trailer

Thursday 13th October, 2016 – The Assembly, the narrative rich, character-driven interactive story in VR from British studio nDreams, launches today on PlayStation®VR via the PlayStation®Store for $29.99 / €24.99 / £19.99.

To celebrate The Assembly’s console launch, following its release on Oculus Rift™ and HTC Vive™ earlier this year, nDreams will be offering the game to all PlayStation®Plus Members with 25% off the game’s RRP. This offer will run for two weeks from the game’s release, ending 27th October.

PlayStation®Plus Members looking forward to receiving their PlayStation®VR pre-orders are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity by adding The Assembly to their library during this window. Once their new VR headset has arrived, they will be able to install and enjoy the game having purchased it at a substantial discount.

To mark the release of The Assembly on PlayStation®VR, nDreams has issued a launch trailer that highlights the game’s incisive story, tense atmosphere and high fidelity visuals. Watch it here:https://youtu.be/Q5QZkjK-TEU

With The Assembly, nDreams has set out to make the most convincing interactive story in VR to date by combining realistic graphics with life-like positional audio. Even so, every interactive story needs a narrative that captures the player’s imagination, which is why The Assembly has been set against a backdrop of current events and real-life societal anxieties. Having this as the foundation for The Assembly’s story allows the game’s creators to ask players whether it is possible for one person to make a real difference, while also challenging their views of the Assembly and its members, through a series of tough choices with in-game repercussions.

nDreams has designed The Assembly to be an ideal introduction to virtual reality, but one that gamers will still recognize as a fully-fledged videogame. The game includes a range of control schemes to suit both novice and more experienced VR gamers alike. Players are able to freely explore The Assembly’s cohesive world using the DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller as comfortably as with flatscreen first-person games.

For more details about the game, please visit The Assembly’s website, Facebook page and YouTube playlist, or visit nDreams’ blog for a wealth of behind-the-scenes information.

LA Haunted Hayride Review 2016

In our 2015 review of the LA Haunted Hayride, we were disappointed with the overall vibe of the event as well as the hayride attraction itself – it seemed distracted or halfhearted (my assumption was that running the hayride in both NY and LA was taxing on their resources). The LA Haunted Hayride was, for five years running, my favorite haunted attraction in Southern California up to that point. Thankfully, the LA Haunted Hayride has rebounded since last year, bringing back that Midwest Halloween Carnival vibe it seemed to lose while also infusing new life into the hayride attraction. Read on to find out how they came back and why you should make plans to go!

We usually start our LA Haunted Hayride media night with some photos from the red carpet but wanted to focus on the haunted attraction proper because of its rebuilding year in 2015. Entering the location past the ticket counter, we were treated to several monsters working their scares and impressing guests with their imaginative costumes. The LA Haunted Hayride character designers are to be commended by their efforts as they are not afraid to push the envelope in terms of gore and technology.

los-angeles-haunted-hayride-2016-037

The hayride attraction starts out very similar in format to past years. There are two lines leading up to the ride – VIP and General Admission, and guests are shuffled into two holding pens just before the tractor and wagon approaches. We boarded the wagon and were told that we could take video and photos so long as there was no flash or light – this is a big change as they usual prohibit photos and videos altogether. After getting seated on the bed of hay, the wagon started moving and we began our journey. This year’s hayride theme is “Secret Society” and involves guests being indoctrinated into the secret society of Halloween. In a cool homage to Indiana Jones and the Forbidden Journey ride at Disneyland, wagons are sent left or right and on the path of the “Elites” or the “Deranged”. What is really interesting about this year’s hayride is that guests actually disembark the wagon midway through the ride and walk through a small haunted house inside the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park. This small haunted house was fun and different but a bit one-note with an overuse of corn stalks. I didn’t see much of the secret society theme inside and, overall, I hope that part of the experience is more entertaining next year. Once through this mini-maze, guests get back on the hay wagon and resume the hayride. The remaining hayride set pieces were entertaining and, for the most part, fit the theme of the secret society indoctrination. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and, overall, the hayride was a lot more fun than last year’s. I can’t say it was scarier or better than a few year’s ago when they had some VERY large set pieces and more open areas in between them, but it is definitely worth taking a ride on.

los-angeles-haunted-hayride-2016-055

Trick or Treat is a haunted house in the not-so-traditional sense in that it is actually a trick or treat simulation set in a haunted village. Guests go inside Trick or Treat in small groups and go door to door, trick or treating! I loved this concept and their execution of it was perfect. Each facade had a different theme and the monsters all had their own defined characters. Guests can thank Sour Punch candy for sponsoring this one and providing the candy. I hope that the LA Haunted Hayride brings this back next year – possibly even in a more expanded role – can never have too much trick or treating, especially when it is presented so well!

The Purgatory area of the LA Haunted Hayride has not changed very much. The pumpkin carving station is a bit smaller this year and the photo gallery has been updated from my last memory of it. It is still a great place to take pictures with the rest of your group. There is a guillotine and some other objects setup near the hayride line but we didn’t see it being used. I would love for them to bring back the flayed pianist they had some years ago, but I digress. The psychics are still there to do palm reading as are the stage shows while the merry go round is still in operation. They did not bring back the spooky food vendors like the candy apple guy seen in pre-NY Haunted Hayride years, but there was a food cart being pushed around to help guests avoid snack shack lines. The food being sold at the food cart is the same as the snack shack, so on busy nights it might save you some time. Speaking of food, the “Grub Shack” has returned and has the same food fare as last year. While tasty, they are still putting cold caramel sauce on green apple slices instead of hot caramel – this really needs to change. The popcorn was decent and the pumpkin beignets were good – definitely check those out and grab a cup of hot cocoa before it sells out – they don’t restock during the night.

los-angeles-haunted-hayride-2016-036

“Ouija, Origin of Evil” Dark Maze is the latest incarnation of their venerable dark maze haunted house. As you might have guessed, this year’s dark maze was sponsored by the new horror film “Ouija, Origin of Evil” and was a good deal of fun. This is especially true if you have a group of people as opposed to just one or two individuals. A group of people stumbling through the darkness gets downright comical in between the scary parts and everyone seems to have fun laughing at getting lost.

Ticket pricing ranges from $32 dollars for just a ride on the hayride to $44 dollars for general admission to all the attractions. If you want to upgrade to front of the line access, it will cost you $60 dollars a person. As far as value is concerned, I would say the $44 dollar ticket is absolutely worth your money. The $60 dollar ticket is a bit pricey – especially if the hayride is not highly populated with guests – say, on a Sunday night or something. But, if you absolutely can’t stand waiting in line then that ticket price is for you.

Overall, the 2016 LA Haunted Hayride is a fun experience that more than makes up for its lackluster 2015 event. The Midwest Halloween carnival vibe is definitely back and, while they still have a little ways to go in terms of getting back to the level of scares and fun they had a few years ago, it is well worth your time.

You can find event dates and ticket information over at the LA Haunted Hayride’s official website.

Spil Games to Dev Titles for Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Amsterdam – 12 October 2016 – Europacorp, Luc Besson’s film studio, has selected Spil Games to create the official mobile and web game for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the director’s upcoming $180M sci-fi movie.

The film is in post-production and will be released globally in July next year. EuropaCorp has asked Spil Games to develop a strategy game in parallel with that process, ready for launch a few weeks before the film.

“Spil Games impressed us with their vision and understanding of the world of Valerian,” said Valerian producer Virginie Besson-Silla. “We are very excited and feel they are the perfect partner to help us share Valerian with the gaming universe.”

valerian-poster

The quality and creativity of the game is vital for a Triple A Hollywood property like Valerian but the long-term partnership with EuropaCorp also relies on Spil Games’ proven experience in creating and monetizing multi-million-dollar game franchises. The company’s ability to engage with an international audience of more than 120m will be key to the game’s commercial success, but it also opens up cross-marketing opportunities for the film.

“People are talking about this film as the spiritual successor to Fifth Element. It’s going to be huge,” says Tung Nguyen-Khac, Spil Games’ CEO. “We’re excited and honored to be making the game for Luc and I believe we can really intensify the audience experience around the themes and ideas within the movie.”

Engaging an audience in a genuinely immersive game is increasingly important in the movie business.

“It’s no longer enough to make a game that just mimics the movie,” says Tung. “Yes, players want to dig further into the story but the game also has to be cool and fun to play in its own right. The producers of the New Hollywood understand that a game which captivates its audience can massively amplify a movie brand.”

MTV’s Scream Returns with 2-Hour Halloween Special

October 11, 2016 – Just in time for Halloween, MTV unleashes a horrifying new 2-hour special that picks up eight months after Kieran’s (Amadeus Serafini) arrest. Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) is struggling to focus on her future and who she really is after everything that has happened. Meanwhile, Noah (John Karna) and Stavo (Santiago Segura) have combined forces to create a best-selling graphic novel based on the Kieran Wilcox murders and Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) has found herself in a new relationship. Since the first anniversary of Piper’s killing spree is upon us, Emma and her friends are determined to be as far from Lakewood as possible and Stavo has the perfect solution. He and Noah are researching for their next graphic novel, a Lizzy Borden-esque legend on Shallow Grove Island, and suggest the rest of the group come along for the weekend. Just when they thought they were safe, the Lakewood survivors find themselves in another bloody standoff, leaving them to wonder – is an old legend coming back to life or has murder followed them from Lakewood?”  Could there be more “Scream” to come?…
