Lifetrak Brite R450 Fitness Watch Review

LifeTrak Brite R450 watch

LifeTrak Brite R450 watch

Wearable health/fitness devices are all the rage today with smartbands and phone apps being a booming business. However, for those of us who wear watches everyday, we don’t want to wear yet another band around our wrists – it doesn’t even tell time! Enter the Lifetrak Brite R450 fitness watch. Unlike most smartbands out there, the Lifetrak Brite R450 is a wristwatch with fitness band functionality – and a little more! On a design level, the Brite R450 appears to be a rather standard wristwatch. It comes in three color schemes and fits a large variety of wrist sizes thanks to its adjustment system.

The Lifetrak Brite R450 fitness watch has a number of features which put it on par, if not better, than most smartbands on the market. First, the Brite R450 will montior your heart rate without the use of an external sensor strap. It does this through some crazy technological wizardry I have yet to fully understand – but, I am pretty sure it involves gyros and magnets. Second, the Brite R450 will track the quality of your sleep without you having to put it into a sleep mode. Again: Wizardry! More over, this sleep tracker will even wake you up gently, by way of a vibration alarm, as to not shock your system back into consciousness. The Brite R450 will also interface with your smartphone via Bluetooth and let you preview text messages, email, and more.

LifeTrak Brite R450 watch

The biggest issue I had while trying out the Brite R450 was that its screen seems a bit too small for all the information it has available for the user. I would have liked to see the screen be a bit bigger to fit more information in a sensible way. Its predecessor, the Lifetrak Zone C410, had a slightly better interface thanks to its skyscraper style screen. Also, synchronizing the watch with your smartphone app still has to be done manually as does its heart rate monitor functionality.

The obvious reason for this saving battery life, as the Lifetrak Brite R450 does not feature a rechargeable style battery seen in most fitness bands. Instead, it uses actual watch batteries! Of course, the benefit to this is that the Brite R450 has a very long battery life overall and it can go months upon months without needing the battery changed out.

[ezcol_1half]The Good

  • Tells the time – it’s a watch!
  • Accurate activity tracking
  • Reasonable price point
  • Sleep tracker is terrific

[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]The Not So Good

  • Screen not as big as I would like
  • Manual sync and heart rate monitoring

[/ezcol_1half_end]

Overall, the Lifetrak Brite R450 fitness tracker is an excellent option for watch-wearers looking to monitor their activity levels. The addition of sleep tracking and its built-in heart rate sensor is a huge boost to the watch’s functionality. I only wish it had a little bigger of a screen to display more information.

LA Haunted Hayride Gets Theme and NY Haunted Hayride Announced

(New York City – July 13, 2015) – Ten Thirty One Productions (TTO), the worldwide leader in producing live horror attractions, will expand the most popular Halloween attraction in the country, Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, to New York City this October for the first time ever. The wildly popular attraction, annually held in Los Angeles, led Mark Cuban to make the largest investment in “Shark Tank” history as well as a second investment by Live Nation.  TTO will now be bringing its biggest and best scares from seven years of haunting the west coast to the east coast for the most horrifying experience in town.

“This expansion to New York City is one of the most important moments in the history of Ten Thirty One Productions, and one we’ve been planning for 4 years,” says CEO of TTO Melissa Carbone. “As a native east coaster (where the concept originated), I have a very vested interest in changing Halloween forever in New York City by bringing a completely new immersive magical world to New York.”

Located at Randall’s Island Park, which historically has been home to real-life asylums and psychiatric hospitals, New York Haunted Hayride will embark on its traditional tractor drawn, hay filled wagons through a high-octane fantasy world that exploits the most disturbing fears living in us all.  Patrons can expect to encounter terror from all sides and angles through enchanted Halloween portals of ghostly apparitions, demonic possessions, orphanages of burnt children, creatures of leviathan proportion, psychopathic clowns and much more. Don’t miss the most highly-anticipated Halloween attraction of the year and what’s been called “Terrifying & Awesome.”

“The attraction will be haunting, enchanting, terrifying and everything you want to feel during the Halloween season.  It’s the best work we’ve done from the past seven years, all in one place at the same time,” Carbone adds.

Also returning for its seventh year at Griffith Park’s Old Zoo, the annually-anticipated Los Angeles Haunted Hayride returns with the all new experience, BOOGEYMAN. Expect the most haunting content to date with entirely new rides and new scare zones. Get thrown into unexpected claustrophobic spaces, endless darkness and interact with characters ready to haunt straight from one’s nightmares. Just when the ride can’t get any scarier, “Here Comes the Boogeyman.”

“We organically started to notice that regardless of where you go in the world, each culture has their own version of a Boogeyman.  It’s an intriguing unifying characteristic in the way we experience fear,” says Carbone. “This notion is the overarching theme to an extraordinary ride that will allow hayriders to meet the Boogeymen of the world…and there are some vicious Boogeymen out there.”

The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride continually creates unparalleled experiences with new characters, new sets and a whole new feel from past hayrides.  This year, the entire hayride trail has never been seen as parent company, Ten Thirty One Productions, has built a brand new trail from the ground up. Five Scare Zones will return with brand new zones: Trick Or Treat, House of Shadows, and the mega hit, In-Between Dark Maze with an all-new twist. Purgatory will feature crowd favorites, Theatre Macabre, Death Row, Jack’s Carving Shack, Scary-Go-Round, Psychics, Grub Shack, Bootique and some of the best character performances in the country. Get on the darkest, scariest and most haunting experience to date, Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, BOOGEYMAN.

The terror on both coasts starts on Monday, October 2. The Annual Black Carpet Premiere Night in Los Angeles will take place on Thursday, October 8 where celebrities and VIP guests will get to experience this year’s all new festivities.  Past celebrity attendees at the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride have included Ryan Gosling, David Beckham, Katy Perry, Zac Efron, Kristen Stewart, Demi Lovato, Eva Mendez, Nikki Reed, Megan Fox, Sarah Hyland, Lucy Hale, Chris Colfer, Taylor Lautner, Kellan Lutz, Dax Shepard, Forest Whitaker, Emmy Rossum, Sarah Silverman, Kristin Ritter, Jillian Michaels, and many more. The New York Haunted Hayride anticipates to draw just as many notable names.

The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride and New York Haunted Hayride will be open from Oct 2 – Oct 31.  Tickets for the New York Haunted Hayride start at $35 and $30 for the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. General Admission for Los Angeles Haunted Hayride only includes access to all five attractions for $43 and VIP Admission for $59. Stronghold Crusader 2 – The Templar and the Duke DLC – A Review (PC)

the-templar-and-the-duke-dlc-3

Firefly Studios has released yet another DLC pack for their castle-building RTS game, Stronghold Crusader 2. This new DLC pack is titled The Templar and the Duke. The Templar and the Duke DLC pack follows the same form as the rest of the packs for Stronghold Crusader 2, containing 2 new AI opponents, a new single player missions strand, new castles, new shields, and new achievements. While, at first glance, The Templar and the Duke looks exactly the same as the rest, The Templar and the Duke is my favorite so far due to the extreme differences between the two new characters.

The New Challengers

The first new challenger is the Templar. The Templar is the fanatical knight, bent on wiping out the Muslims from the Holy Land. Once a knight in King Richard’s army, the Templar has been promoted due to his brutality in handling the enemies of the Holy Land. The Templar sees himself as the harbinger of justice from God and represents the unwavering conviction that the Crusaders had for their mission and the lengths that they will go to achieve success.

the-templar-and-the-duke-dlc-2

On the other hand, the Duke represents the complete opposite of the spectrum from the Templar. Having traveled from France, the Duke is here to share in the glory if the Crusades succeed, but has an escape plan ready to go in case they do not. Leading a life of pampering and seclusion from the real world, the Duke has been able to build up a lordly appearance but is incapable of leading in the battlefield. The Duke appears confident to others, but is truly riddled with self-doubt and has only joined the Third Crusade because he feels he has something to prove.

The Templar is the classic rts opponent of the two new characters. The Templar’s castle is of a rigid and structured design, built to withstand the heaviest of sieges. The Duke is the unpredictable opponent, whose castle will have no apparent rhyme or reason to its design. It was how different each of these characters built their castles is why I liked this dlc the most so far. I had a real feel for how different these two opponents really where and the differences in their designs made the dlc a strong one to recommend.

Final Thoughts

Firefly Studios is releasing new content for Stronghold Crusader 2 at a good pace, with this being the third dlc pack since the game’s release last September. Each dlc pack extends the single player game by one mission strand, and introduces two new characters. The Templar and the Duke is my favorite dlc pack to date from Firefly Studios, because of how different these two characters feel from each other. The Templar is the dedicated fanatical knight bent on the ultimate conquering of the Holy Lands, while the Duke is in it only for the glory if it all goes right, and will run at the first hint of failure. Their castle designs represent this difference as well, and you will need two completely different sets of skills to defeat either the Templar or the Duke. The dlc pack costs $6, which has been the standard price for everything that has come out. I feel that the price point is extremely fair for what you get, and fans of Stronghold Crusader 2 should definitely pick up this pack. If you haven’t yet picked up Stronghold Crusader 2, you now have quite a lot of content to get through for a modest price.

Ant-Man Review

ant-man-feeding-ant

Marvel has done it again. Ant-Man is a terrific movie, full of amazing effects, hilarious quips, and fast action. It has the makings of being a huge summer blockbuster, is entertaining as all-get-out, and put a permanent ear-to-ear grin on my face by the time the credits rolled. In short, you should go watch this movie.

Maybe I should just copy-and-paste that phrase over and over again for the rest of this article: Go watch this movie. Go watch this movie. Go watch this movie.

Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) has discovered the Pym Particle, a substance that allows atoms to rearrange themselves, omitting the space between them while maintain—never mind…

It shrinks stuff, is what it does.

Marvel's Ant-Man

Pym does not want this tech to fall into the wrong hands, so he hides it and more-or-less retires from his company. Years later, Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) has taken over Pym’s company, used the Particle to shrink a “Yellowjacket” suit, and wants to sell it all to the highest defense bidder. Cross still can’t do what Pym has already done: shrink an actual person inside the suit.

And that’s where Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) comes in. Lang is a thief trying to turn his life around for his daughter’s sake, and Pym wants him to steal the Yellowjacket suit to keep it out of the bad guys’ hands. To do so, Pym must help Lang learn to use the suit Pym’s already made, to help Lang become the Ant-Man.

This is really Paul Rudd’s movie from beginning to end. His version of Lang is funny, charming, and athletic, just as comfortable scaling the side of a house as he is making a sarcastic comment about the odds of success. Rudd also got screen credit (along with 3 others) as co-screenwriter, and this is one instance where too many cooks did not ruin the meal; it came out as well-done as it possibly could.

ant-man-shower

Paul Rudd is terrific, but Michael Peña, as Lang’s friend and partner-in-crime Luis, steals every single scene he is in. His rapid-fire, slang-filled monologues trying to convince Lang to pull off one last heist, are hilarious, and I would pay good money just to see his scenes again.

Luckily, his scenes are just one part of this fun movie. The special effects (CGI and otherwise) are excellent and seamless, serving the story and the action rather than overwhelming it. Even something as simple as an early scene with a younger Michael Douglas arguing with Howard Stark is really remarkable in its nearly-invisible use of CGI to achieve the effect of turning back the clock.

Ant-Man is simply great – and is just as good as last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which is high praise, indeed! In short: go watch this movie!

Batman: Arkham Knight Review (Xbox One)

Batman Arkham Knight Gamescom Screenshot

There’s an old saying: Be yourself, unless you can be Batman, then be Batman. The Arkham series of Batman video games have only gotten better as it has progressed, with both and gameplay and storylines being simply outstanding. Then came delays on Batman: Arkham Knight and concerns being voiced about the state of the game. Unfortunately, once it was released, the PC version was so bad that if Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment had the chance they would bury all the copies in the desert hole vacated by all those E.T. the Extraterrestrial Atari game cartridges. The port is so bad that refunds were issued and, let’s face it, that is not done easily on digital distribution platforms. At the same time, everyone was stating how good the PlayStation 4 version of the game was and that it is a perfect chapter in the Arkham series. So… what about the Xbox One version? In the shuffle, most folks didn’t seem to know much of anything at all about it. Well, we here at Gamingshogun.com have the goods on the Xbox One version in our review of Batman: Arkham Knight!

Hands On:

Our friends at IGN did a very comprehensive graphics comparison between Batman: Arkham Knight on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. I could try all day to describe the differences, but here is a nice little video clip they put together to show the differences (Do our work for us, IGN!).

Having watched it many times now, I can tell there are slight differences between the two but they are ever so slight. With the minor exceptions regarding some lighting effects, there isn’t much difference. So, no matter what was your  game console of choice, you can pick the game up without fear as you will have a gorgeous game to play.

With that out of the way, we can get down to the nuts and bolts of the game and whether it is a waste of your money on any system besides the PC.  If you liked the other games in the series, you should like this one.  All the game mechanics synonymous with the series, such as the “detective mode” and launching off of buildings to glide through the streets are still in play, most with slight enhancements.  Just as in previous games, the buttons multitask so hitting a series of them might be necessary to perform a task but the combos are kept simple so that you aren’t fumbling with them while trying to figure out the next place to grapple or the direction you need to move for a combo attack.  If you played the other games as I did, the combos and controls felt like second natur. If you haven’t played the other games, they are still fairly easy to pick up with the controller layout reference being just a couple button pushes away. Also, there are hints that pop up on the screen while playing and during loading screens as friendly reminders.

Batman-Arkham-Knight-AR-Challenge-Scarecrow-Nightmare-3

The biggest change in gameplay is, without a doubt, the addition of the Batmobile – which, technically, is more than just a Batmobile as it also changes into the Bat Tank.  Please note that is not the official name for it but that is what the street thugs call it and when it comes on-scene, they go running like crazy.  The Bat Tank does bring up an interesting point with Batman in that he doesn’t kill the street criminals but he uses a cannon to destroy drones.  Not to worry though as the Bat Tank automatically tells when it is firing on people or drones and if there is a person involved it uses non-lethal rounds like a souped-up police bean bag gun.  Some of the wrecks it causes with manned vehicles could be argued to be hard for a person to survive without being maimed or worse but the game gives these situations the benefit of the doubt and, in many crashes you cause, you will see the passengers and drivers crawling out of the wreck and making a run for it.

There was a lot of concern going into this game that the Batmobile might make the game too easy to play, especially with its tank mode.  The developers definitely kept this in mind and the game has parts where you can’t physically use the Batmobile as well as parts where you have to do so.  That being the case, there are chances to do combo fights with the Batmobile like it was another person and though those moments feel a bit overpowered. However, those moments feel really fun and satisfying and is entirely to your discretion to use them or not.

You earn points through gameplay and mission completions which can upgrade not just your skills but your Batmobile’s skills as well with Lucious and Alfred sending Batman additional upgrades as the game calls for it.  Feel free to save up some points in case you find a challenge mission particularly hard and want to feed some points into skills that help it but mostly the points feed into your favorite playstyle.  Love launching off the buildings and gliding long distances?  There’s a skill for that! Prefer traveling by Batmobile? Then you can concentrate your points on that – just remember there are times when the Batmobile isn’t available for mission, so try not to put ALL your points into it!

Batman-Arkham-Knight-Occupy-Gotham-Most-Wanted-Watchtower-15

There are a ton of side missions and the game really plays up the sandbox style where you can concentrate on the main mission or spend hours just running around breaking up mobs.  You can easily get days, if not weeks, of playtime out of this game and most of the side missions feel like they serve a purpose more than just helping you level and get skill points.

Last but not least let’s talk about the storyline without giving too much away.  The game draws upon the entirety of the Batman universe, picking and choosing how to use the best moments with the best characters and watching some of my favorite comic book moments play out in moving scenes with exceptional voice acting.  I consider myself a Batman fan but by no means an expert yet I still recognized key moments in his lore play out throughout the game in a seamless manner.  It was surprising how well they could be stitched up into one encompassing tale, even using pseudo flashbacks that Batman knew about but had not witnessed.

I forgot to mention all the different skins for Batman, the Batmobile, and pretty much every character that helps you in the game. So many skins to get!

batman-arkham-knight-oracle

Last Call:
There is so much to Batman: Arkham Knight that I will still be working on the side missions for some time to come. I am already planning on picking up the Season Pass because I can’t wait to see and play more of the story. It feels weird to say this but I feel grateful to be able to play such a diverse and amazing game and even with the port failure of the PC version, I would gladly and quickly pre-order another installment on a next-gen console if they decided to make one, I simply don’t want it to end!
