Corsair VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headset Review

VOID_WIRELESS_SE_YLW_01

We recently got the chance to check out the VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 gaming headset in the “Yellowjacket” special edition color scheme. This wireless headset retails for $149.99 and is available “soon” for your purchasing enjoyment. Why should you purchase this headset? Because it provides some seriously great wireless audio while also being extremely comfortable. Also, it has some of the most convincing virtual surround sound I have heard to date – which is saying something as, usually, virtual surround sound just sounds weird and not very directional.

Featuring a flexible, yet durable frame and a color scheme that reminds me of the Transformer known as “Bumblebee”, I was very pleased when I actually put on the Corsair VOID wireless headphones. They have a very special ear cup shape that, while seeming strange at first, is actually shaped to more accurately conform to the human ear. The memory foam pads are great cushions and I wore them for several hours without experiencing any of the usual long-use headphone symptoms of sweaty ears, sore spots, etc.

While some users have reported issues with this headset if they choose to just “plug and play”, Corsair is advising all customers who purchase this product to first install their Corsair Utility Engine (CUE) software off of their website. We downloaded and installed the CUE software then began installation.

In order to wirelessly communicate with the headset, you will need to use this cool little USB dongle. Now, pictured above is the included extension cable and hub in case you need it, but you could also just plug the USB dongle directly into a USB port on your PC or laptop. I like the idea of this extender and hub. While I didn’t note any interference in either configuration, I just rested easier seeing the dongle on my desktop, as if somehow the 2.4GHz signal couldn’t go through some lightweight office furniture a few feet away – but, I digress.

VOID_WIRELESS_SE_YLW_02

One interesting feature of this headset is its CUE control knob. On the back side of the left ear cup, you will find a cool little knob that can adjust CUE settings without having to leave your game. Rotating back and forth adjusts the volume while short or long-clicking the knob will adjust the current EQ profile as well as disable or enable Dolby tech! Additionally, the headset uses 50mm drivers in its ear cups to provide audio. A lot of times, 40mm drivers are used but using the 50mm version allows for much fuller sound – especially when in its virtual 7.1 channel sound mode.

I have been playing some serious sessions of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as well as the awesome tactical RPG Pillars of Eternity – not to mention hefty bouts of music and movie enjoyment. At $149.99, it is a pricey headset, but not totally out of the range of headsets in this category, so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue for gamers. Overall, I found the Corsair VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 Gaming to be a great headset for playing just about any kind of game or simply enjoying your favorite flicks at your computer.

LUCID P7 4X Weapon Optic Review (Airsoft)

p419 copy

Good optics are a bit of a controversial topic in airsoft. Some hardcore players will purchase an optic that cost two to three times the price of their actual airsoft gun! The question is, do you need it when many players do just fine with iron sights or even sighting down the muzzle of their guns? Obviously, it is a deeply personal choice. For me, I like having an optic on the airsoft rifle I use – especially one with a bit of zoom factor to it. Airsoft is not a very long range hobby, so a 4X zoom is a great option. Not only will it get you in close to see where your BBs are landing, but it will also allow you to still engage closer targets – albeit not as effectively as a dedicated, 1X red dot, etc.

Lucid Optics is a US-based firearms optics company that is known for offering high quality optics for less than high price points. You can find our review of their M7 microdot red dot sight here. While at the 2015 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, we got to lay our eyes on their upcoming P7 4X optic, and now it has hit the market. Retailing for $439 dollars, the optic features a rugged, rubberized body with nitrogen purged housing, giving it a 100% fog-proofing. It also features the very cool reticle auto-brightness feature found on other Lucid Optics models, which is great when moving in and out of structures. The P7 has a very clear reticle with an interesting MoA “measuring tape” system. This is for the real steel shooters out there, but it is said to allow the shooter to more easily account for distance in placing their shots. In fact, each part of their P7 reticle has a very specific size, shape, or distance from center, all of which means something. If you are buying this optic for real steel shooting, please take the time to fully understand what it all means.

p420 copy

Being that it is meant to put up with real steel usage, the P7 Weapon Optic is very rugged, with what the company is calling a 100% shockproof design, rated up to a .458 SOCOM! While airsoft does not feature the kind of recoil real steel firearms features, a player’s equipment still needs to put up with running, jumping, and crawling through all manner of rugged terrain. It also needs to put up with the shock that comes with slamming into objects one comes across in the environment. If I had a nickel for every time I accidentally hit my rifle into the side of a wall or tree, I would be sitting on beach at my own private island resort right now. Thankfully, the Lucid Optics P7 4X Weapon Optic puts up with all of this punishment and keeps on ticking. I even attached it to my KWA PTR LM4 gas blowback airsoft rifle, which features a nice little bit of recoil, and the optic never lost its zero.

The one thing I did not get a chance to do was actually take this optic out into the airsoft field and play a game with it. This evaluation is based solely on airsoft firing range time only. We did not take the optic out into the field as we didn’t want it to accidentally get shot out from a BB strike (it is a review item and will have to be sent back). Given the price point of this optic, I would highly recommend that you get a high quality BB shield made from polycarbonate that will avoid unfortunate, and costly, breakage.

p417 copy

Another great “plus” in choosing the Lucid P7 4X Weapon Optic is that it is powered by one AA style battery. Many optics on the market opt for CR123A style batteries. While offering a smaller form factor, these are harder to come by in most places. Using a AA is great choice as they are readily available – even in local super gas station mini-marts. Furthermore, the AA battery life of this optic is advertised at 2500 hours! That is over 104 straight days of use for those of you not wanting to do the math. As my time is limited with this review unit, I can’t guarantee that this rating is correct but Lucid Optics has a history of being honest with their customers and treating them right – I have no reason to doubt them on this point.

Overall, the Lucid Optics P7 4X Weapon Optic is one of the best 4X optics you can buy under $500 dollars. It is at the high end of the optics I would use on an airsoft rifle, but if your airsoft gun already costs $300 to $400 dollars, then it is not a far shot to picking one up. It is probably a bit too much for your $150 dollar Combat Machine, but that’s an entry level rifle and this kind of optic doesn’t fit that demographic. As a final thought on this optic: It is made to stand up to the rigors of real steel shooting – so, if you have an AR platform of your own, you will also be able to use it on that too!

Razer Unveils New Orochi Mouse at IFA 2015

razer-orochi-2015

BERLIN (IFA), Germany – Razer™, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers, today announced the complete re-design of the popular Razer Orochi notebook gaming mouse. The Razer Orochi features the world’s most precise mouse sensor for on-the-go gaming.
Retaining the name of its predecessor, the new Razer Orochi features the latest in sensor and battery technology to give gamers pinpoint accuracy and more than double the playing time in wireless mode. Complimenting this overhaul, Razer has also added Chroma lighting, dual mode connectivity and a completely re-engineered shell.

At the heart of the new Razer Orochi is a 4G, 8200 DPI laser sensor – the highest DPI sensor ever fit into a mobile gaming mouse. The result is pinpoint tracking for incredible accuracy and movement speeds of up to 210 inches per second with 50 G acceleration, making the Razer Orochi ideal for every game and play style, from fast reaction FPS gameplay to high-accuracy MOBAs.

By utilizing the latest in Bluetooth Low Energy technology, the new Razer Orochi has more than double the battery life with over 60 hours of continuous gaming use – or 7 months of normal use – from a single charge. It is ideal for wireless notebook use with a polling rate of 125 Hz, which increases to 1000 Hz when used in wired mode.

“With the recent advances in sensor and Bluetooth technology, it was time for us to bring the Orochi up to date, which involved a complete redesign of the entire mouse,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We’ve retained the portable form factor and added rubberized side grips, but on the inside is where the big changes have happened. This is a whole new feature-packed mobile gaming mouse.”

The new Razer Orochi also features Razer’s industry leading Chroma lighting, giving users the choice of 16.8 million color options with which to customize their mouse. As with previous Chroma products, customizing the Razer Orochi is achieved within seconds through Razer Synapse, Razer’s cloud-based hardware configurator. The new Razer Orochi’s Chroma lighting effects are able to sync across other Razer Chroma peripherals, which include keyboards, a headset and a mouse mat.

By connecting the Razer Orochi with Razer Synapse, users are able to customize their lighting settings, calibrate their Razer Orochi to the surface they are using, assign macros and functions to the seven mouse buttons, and save all their settings to the cloud for use no matter where they are.

Major Software Updates

Driven by continued investments from its core team alongside a productive community of contributors, the OSVR software platform continues to grow and offer a complete set of capabilities for VR application developers. Some of the recent enhancements include:

OSVR Render Manager, allowing optimal low-latency rendering on any OSVR-supported device.

Currently supporting Gameworks VR, NVIDIA’s technology for VR headsets and games, the OSVR Render Manager provides:

  • Direct Mode—the NVIDIA driver treats VR headsets as head mounted displays accessible only to VR applications, rather than a typical Windows monitor that your PC shows up on, providing better plug and play support and compatibility for VR headsets.
  • Front Render Buffering—enables the GPU to render directly to the front buffer to reduce latency.
  • Context Priority—provides headset developers with control over GPU scheduling to support advanced virtual reality features such as asynchronous time warp, which cuts latency and quickly adjusts images as gamers move their heads, without the need to re-render a new frame.

“Our work with NVIDIA is a key step towards achieving our goal of providing developers with a comprehensive infrastructure that allows creating high-performance VR and AR experiences regardless of the particular operating system, HMD platform, game engine or input peripherals,” says Yuval Boger, CEO of Sensics. “OSVR allows the VR/AR community to create exciting experiences without being locked in to any single vendor”.

Support for other graphics architectures are currently in development

OSVR Performance Profiler

Utilizing ETW – Event Tracing for Windows – the OSVR performance profiler allows optimizing application performance by identifying performance bottlenecks throughout the entire software stack.

Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) is an efficient kernel-level tracing facility that lets you log kernel or application-defined events to a log file and then interactively inspect and visualize them with a graphical tool

Phillips Showcases New Monitors at IFA 2015

phillips-curved

Amsterdam, September 4, 2015 – MMD, the leading technology company and brand license partner for Philips Monitors, is raising the stakes in display performance and clarity at IFA 2015. Visitors who want a one-stop encounter with display innovations for professional and leisure applications should make the Philips stand in Hall 22 a highlight on their tour of the event. IFA 2015 takes place from 4 to 9 September in Berlin.

One standout highlight is the new curved monitor, a Philips display first. This 34-inch display wraps around the user’s line of vision to create a truly immersive, focused experience. By placing the user at the center of the action, it creates more personal space and provides total focus on the task in hand. The edge-to-edge glass and ultra-narrow border enhance this seamless appearance and maximize the viewing area. Visuals are razor-sharp, thanks to the CrystalClear, UltraWide Quad HD resolution (3440 x 1440), AH-IPS LCD technology and a wide viewing angle to bring graphics and images to life.

Sound quality is equally amazing. Through accurate placement of audio cues, the display’s DTS Sound technology elevates the playback quality of music, movies, streaming and games to new levels. Users enjoy an immersive virtual surround sound experience, complete with rich bass and dialog enhancement and maximized volume levels free of any clipping or distortion.

Also on show is the new Philips 27-inch LCD monitor with UltraClear 5K resolution. With 14.7 million pixels (5,120 x 2,880), the latest 5K resolution technology packs four times more content per screen inch than Quad HD resolution, for more dazzling visuals than ever. The new display is also equipped with PerfectKolor Technology, which ensures factory-calibrated 99% AdobeRGB colour space and one billion colors. As well as brilliant color and resolution, the display is thoughtfully engineered to fit the way people work, with webcam, MultiView for dividing the display space into multiple partitions, built-in speakers for great sound, as well as a non-glare screen and Flicker-Free technology for reduced eye fatigue.

Taking color intensity to the max, a new 27-inch IPS-ADS Adobe RGB display with Quantum Dot Color IQ™ is also premiered at IFA 2015. This transformative technology delivers over 50% more color than traditional LEDs. It is also more affordable, costing a fraction of most color-critical technologies, and more energy-efficient: Quantum Dot Color IQ uses 25% less energy than comparable technologies.

IFA 2015 marks the European debut appearance of the Ambiglow Plus Base. Ambiglow technology creates a halo of light on and around the base that syncs with the display image to create a more immersive viewing experience. The light is still available even when the display is off so users can adjust color and brightness to create a unique room ambience. It is also possible to set the timer to wake up or fall asleep with light of a chosen color.

MMD is also rolling out its innovative SoftBlue technology to a 24-inch display, which will be on show at IFA 2015. SoftBlue technology protects eyes and reduces eye fatigue by mitigating the impact of blue-light exposure. It does this by eliminating blue light emissions at potentially harmful wavelengths, but without sacrificing the fidelity and quality of the original color. Users therefore enjoy well-being for their eyes as well as professional-grade color fidelity.

MMD will be showcasing these Philips displays and innovations at the Philips stand in Hall 22. Visitors will have plenty of opportunity to test the monitors and experience the viewing quality for themselves.
