2015 Six Flags Great Adventure Fright Fest Review

six-flags-fright-fest-image9

Fall is finally upon us. The leaves are starting to brown, and the wind is picking up with brisk breezes. Summer is officially over, school is in full swing, and the first celebrated holiday that gets kids jumping (or running!) with excitement is around the corner – Halloween. Growing up, Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays. Nothing beats putting on a costume, getting into character, and receiving free candy as a reward for your ghoulish antics. It’s the only time to tap into your deepest fears and playfully terrorize each other with scary faces and situations you only see in your nightmares and movies.

After building up enough courage and excitement, I found myself at this year’s Six Flags Fright Fest for the very first time. Once the sun set and dusk was upon me, the park completely transformed. Every inch of Six Flags was covered in Halloween decorations, like spooky cobwebbed columns, freaky figurines, eerie music playing throughout the speaker system, a new blood-red water fountain, and of course, the zombies and ghouls! Walking and hiding throughout the park, these guys will find and scare you, whether you like it or not.

Total Darkness

Starting our terror trail experience, we went for Total Darkness, which is an indoor, not-your-average haunted house. Before entering you are teamed up with a group and instructed to hold onto a rope that has a small red-dimmed flashlight tied to the front end. As you go through the completely pitch-black maze, everyone will need to work together to reach the exit. This one definitely got my heart pumping because you are completely relying on your teammates, forced to feel out the walls for direction. As for sound? You’re pretty much vulnerable to everything that is scary in the world – loud screams and noises, creepy laughter and spine-chilling whispers. However, the tight corners and losing all control of sight and direction, Total Darkness wasn’t a winner in my book.

Big Top Terror: Forgotten Carnival 3-D

Whether you love or hate clowns, this one is a must-go. Before heading inside, everyone is given 3-D glasses. First thought? What the hell is going to pop in front of my face! Decked out in bright neon colors and 3-D effects, this entire indoor maze is a freaky, yet fun trip. The holographic design is a new, interesting take on scary clowns and their demonic smiles. Big Top Terror: Forgotten Carnival takes the cake on scary visuals. At one point, I even had to use the person in front of me as a human shield.

VooDoo Island

Set on an outdoor tribal maze, we were greeted with voodoo heads on spikes (yikes!) This was another visually appealing terror trail, packed with evil spirit-chanting voodoo priests and lost, terrorized ghouls. Without spoiling the trail further, I can say that I did leave the maze running, not walking.

The Manor

Are you curious to know what goes on inside the walls of an abandoned haunted manor? You’ll find your answer here. Decked out with dusty décor, The Manor is an indoor maze that houses ghosts and ghouls, ready to attack you from every corner. Maybe because it was pretty well lit, this one wasn’t so high on the fright scale – but it will at least get a jump or two out of you.

six-flags-fright-fest-image10

Asylum

You would think sane people would want to stay out of an asylum, but this terror trail is one you can’t avoid. Blood-covered walls, rotting rooms, blood hungry deranged patients running towards you, zombie nurses, soulless police officers and other unspeakable terrors have taken over this asylum. If you come to Fright Fest looking to get scared, Asylum is your answer.

Alas, the clock was approaching midnight and it was ultimately time to leave. I didn’t get to experience all of the terror trails, but overall I was pleasantly pleased with the amount of scare I had in one night. This being my first experience, I am already looking forward to attending again. It truly captures the essence of Halloween and all the fun that goes behind it. I can only imagine the great lengths the costume and different theme park teams go through to transform the park into something new. I give this year’s Six Flags Fright Fest two thumbs up!

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 Review (PS4)

THPS5_School_Tony_Airwalk

One of the very first games I owned for the PlayStation 2 was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and, WOW, did I play the hell out of that game. Massive and fully interactive maps along with a fantastic and fun user interface made that game as addictive as could be. That being my last experience with a skateboard title, I was all ears when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 got announced earlier this year. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t live up to anything more than a slightly higher definition version of what could almost be a last-gen console game.

The games mechanics for THPS5 are just as you’d expect from a Tony Hawk skateboard game. Grinding, manuals, basic skating, ramps and what not – they’re all back in the same working format that you’ve come to know and love. The low gravity is also as it was from previous titles, making for some amazing tricks when hitting ramps, verts, and the like. This can also lead to some rather hilarious bugs when missing a trick at the wrong time, literally catapulting your rag-doll character across the map or soaring into the air minus their board.

Though THPS5 is what you’d come to believe a Tony Hawk title to be, it doesn’t feel like a brand new game. In fact, it feels like a step backwards for the title in almost every way. With a next-gen console release, I expected much more massive and in-depth maps, a higher variety of tricks and abilities, and much more customization options when creating a your own skater, and so on and so forth compared to what next-gen consoles have been visually able to pull off over the past few years since their initial release.

Instead, custom skaters do not start out with many custom options at all and unlocking them comes slowly and with minimal reward. Even then, unlocking a custom head or outfit during a skating session doesn’t actually show you what you’ve unlocked until you go to the custom skater window and scroll all the way to where the unlocked card is, flipping it to show what you actually received. Not only can this be a pain since there are a ton of unlockables, but it’s also not very rewarding when you take all that time just to find out you unlocked an outfit or an item that you could really care less about. Along with that, all custom skaters are based on original character templates (Tony Hawk, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, etc) so even if you fully customize your character, it’s still the template wearing different outfits, faces, and the like. There’s no real option to play as a completely original skater.

The soundtrack, while fitting for a Tony Hawk title, can be rather repetitive. Why sports titles have not expanded their tracklist along with their expansion of options and gameplay is completely baffling to me. While understanding that licensing is always going to be an issue, a true fan of sports titles is going to be playing them for a year solid before the following year’s title releases and a small soundtrack (like MLB The Show 2015 or NHL 14) is going to become an annoyance after the first solid week of gameplay. Along with that, THPS5 doesn’t really give you the option to turn off specific songs and let me tell you, some of them are catchy while others are downright annoying. Being an independent artist myself and knowing the currently horrid state of the music industry, it would be nice to see more original music as well as more choices as far as soundtracks go. That would help a lot in keeping things lively and exciting. Instead, after only a few hours of gameplay, I was getting repeat tracks since starting a mission or a new skate session will start a new song from the beginning and there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to the order of tracks being played.

THPS5_Warehouse_Tony_OllieNorth

Speaking of missions, these are the only way to open up new levels in THPS5. While Free Skate can be an absolute blast, there’s really nothing that can be gained as far as game advancement and jumping into the missions is the main way of progression aside from acquiring points for character customization unlocks. While some missions can be fun (grinding distances and exploding heads are my personal favorites), they also become repetitive and more of a “collect these” and “return them here”, taking away from the whole point of skateboarding where you want to be doing tricks and attempting death-defying skateboard acrobatics. Another downside is that the missions are the same, level-to-level, simply with different names according to the theme of the map you’re on leading to a lot of repetitiveness, especially when you just want to free skate all the maps.

The whole interface of the game seems like it took a step back to the PlayStation 2 days, both graphically and texture wise. Doing awesome tricks does not feel as satisfying without the big blowup text or anything fancy happening other than the trick you did being high-lighted as a different color at the bottom of the screen. Along with that, there are company logos EVERYWHERE. It almost seems like THPS5 was created just to be a brand showcase cash grab and not necessarily a well-rounded follow-up to what has been some amazing skateboard games over the past years. The maps themselves look tiled together and done have that beautiful, clean look to them you’d expect from a next-gen console (I could be playing this on the PS2 and wouldn’t know the difference to be honest).

While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is still fun to play just as you’d remember the previous titles to be, there’s really nothing new or exciting in it. Because of that, the game wears thin rather quickly as there isn’t much to really keep you playing in what is supposed to be a brand new, 5th title in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series. Limited and unimaginative missions, small and sometimes basic maps, and graphical bugs that can be a pain – it’s sad to see that this feels more like “Tony Hawk Takes Your Money” than a brand new Pro Skater title. Maybe I expected too much but even a brand new player to the Pro Skater series will see 5 as a game that could have had potential but seemed more rushed out in its final product and lacking a lot of the basic polish you expect from a game released in 2015.

The Park Gets First Gameplay Trailer

The_Park_Screenshot_5_1080

Oslo, Norway – October 9th, 2015 – Earlier this year, independent game development studio Funcom announced it was working on ‘The Park’, a psychological horror experience and its first single-player game in almost ten years. A short, but intense experience, ‘The Park’ puts players into the shoes of Lorraine, a mother whose son goes missing in a mysterious and terrifying theme park.

This new video offers both a glimpse behind the scenes at Funcom as well as the first-ever released gameplay footage showing ‘The Park’ in action. Creative Director Joel Bylos, Art Director Gavin Whelan and Audio Director Simon Poole takes time to explain what ‘The Park’ is all about and what players can expect to see and do once they step through the gates of Atlantic Island Park. Focusing entirely on atmosphere, exploration and a strong narrative, ‘The Park’ draws inspiration from games such as ‘Gone Home’, ‘Dear Esther’ and ‘The Vanishing of Ethan Carter’.

“For the last ten years, Funcom has been focused on making massively multiplayer online games, so ‘The Park’ is our first single-player experience in a long time,” says Creative Director Joel Bylos. “It has been an incredibly fun and rewarding process working on ‘The Park’. What initially started out as a prototype and a way for us to learn new development tools, has evolved into a short and intense psychological horror experience which we are all very excited to share with gamers out there.”

ROCCAT Unveils Kova Gaming Mouse

roccat-kova-mouse

Hamburg, 8 October 2015 – ROCCAT kicks off the release season in 2015 with the launch of its all new Kova performance gaming mouse, the successor to the popular Kova[+]. The Kova[+] took the gaming scene by storm when it was released in 2010 and went on to develop a hardcore cult following thanks to its streamlined aesthetics. Forged using the legacy of its predecessor as its blueprint, the new Kova represents a re-imagined fan favorite for gamers who value pure performance above all else.

The new Kova features a sleek, ambidextrous design suitable for left- and right-handers alike. Built for power and speed, the mouse places a strong emphasis on raw performance. The result is streamlined, sports-car like aesthetics with doubled-up core functionality.

The all new Kova – doubled up functionality

The mouse is equipped with a latest generation Pro-Optic R6 sensor with 3500 native dpi featuring Overdrive mode. Overdrive allows for a stable dpi double-up, resulting in an effective dpi of 7000. This technology is made possible by the powerful Turbo Core V2 32-bit ARM-based MCU in the engine room. Two Smart Cast buttons sit on either side of the Kova’s mouse 1 and mouse 2 buttons. They form part of an overall intuitive button layout designed for lightning-fast reactions to in-game events. Optimally placed within finger-tip reach, the Smart Cast buttons add a new level of reflexive control for fast-paced games and facilitate rapid combos and easy switching between, for example, weapons or ammo types, and so on.

The Kova features double the illumination power thanks to a vivid RGB lighting system. The 16.8 million color illumination suite lets you configure the scroll wheel and mouse rim lighting independently of each other.

ROCCAT’s famous Easy-Shift[+] technology takes the Kova’s total number of button functions up to an impressive 22. The mouse is available in both black and white and is compatible with ROCCAT’s new Swarm driver system.

ROCCAT founder and CEO, René Korte, comments: “The Kova[+] was cherished by gamers for its sleek aesthetics, and that’s something we wanted to keep when re-imagining the mouse for the games of today. The new Kova is a worthy successor to the name, carrying on the tradition of streamlined performance. It features a high-octane, sports-car like build with staggering power under the hood. We’re sure it’ll delight hardcore gamers as well as fans of the original.” The all new ROCCAT Kova will retail for 59,99 Euro and hits stores worldwide 17 November 2015.

Tales of Halloween Review

tales-of-halloween-still-2

Tales of Halloween is a ten story anthology flick revolving around the scariest night of the year, Halloween. Each of the tales was directed by a different person, giving them all their own, unique style. These anthology flicks are becoming a lot more popular these days, with movies such as the ABCs of Death and V/H/S sprawling into full franchises. Of course, these types of films have been around a while with Tales from the Crypt, “Tales from the Darkside”, and “Trick ‘r Treat”.

Some of the standout tales include “The Ransome of Rusty Rex” by Ryan Schifrin, “The Night Billy Raised Hell” by Darren Lynn Bousman, and “This Means War” by Andrew Kasch and John Skipp – although, there is something to like about all of the tales presented in the film. The only tale that didn’t quite resonate with me was “The Weak and the Wicked” by Paul Solet which, while I admire its high-concept, just didn’t come together enough in execution.

tales-of-halloween-still-3

The segments are sometimes spooky, sometimes gory but always entertaining, and I loved Adrienne Barbeau in the role of a radio disc jokey (an homage to her role in John Carpenter’s The Fog) to act as a link between all of the tales. Speaking of homages, the film has a ton of genre cred. For instance, the kid in the film’s first segment, titled “Sweet Tooth”, is dressed up as Snake Plissken from John Carpenter’s Escape from New York! Also making cameos are John Landis, Barbara Crampton, to name just a couple. Just keep your eyes peeled as there are a ton more to notice in the film.

Overall, Tales of Halloween is an entertaining horror-comedy anthology that is worth watching this Halloween season. Hopefully, it will spawn a sequel and become a franchise so we can see more Tales of Halloween next Halloween!
