Razer Diamondback Chroma Review

Rzr_-Dimondback_v3_RGB

The Razer Diamondback gaming mouse debuted in 2004 and took the gaming world by storm. Its ambidextrous design allowed both left and right-handed gamers to share in having a high performance mouse with the first ever optical sensor. While Razer would eventually move on to other, newer mouse designs, gamers who owned the mouse have never forgotten it. Apparently, neither did Razer, as they recently released a brand-new version of the venerable mouse, the Razer Diamondback Chroma.

The original Diamondback shipped with a then-revolutionary 1,600 DPI optical sensor. The new Diamondback Chroma contains a 16,000 DPI 5G laser sensor within its ambidextrous form factor. Also new with the Diamondback Chroma is the Chroma lighting system which Razer is planning to install in the majority of its new peripherals going forward. What the Chroma system offers is a lighting system capable of displaying 16.8 million color combinations. Additionally, the system is able to interconnect with other Chroma-enabled Razer peripherals.

In terms of performance, the Razer Diamondback Chroma’s laser sensor is incredible, and I consistently made use of the on-the-fly DPI adjustment capabilities depending on my gaming needs at the time. I even left my left-handed friend try it out (he had an original Diamondback) and he also found it to be as comfortable as he remembered.

Diamondback1

I recently got an advanced copy of Bethesda’s Fallout 4 (which is out now, of course) and loved using the Diamondback Chroma while exploring the post-nuclear wasteland. The Diamondback Chroma is comfortable enough for just about any type of mouse-user, whether you use the “claw” style, “palm” style, or a combination of the two. Razer did an excellent job on crafting a universally-liked peripheral. Now, are there better right-handed mice out there? I would say yes – actually I dig Razer’s Mamba gaming mouse a bit more for my personal level of comfort. However, there are no better ambidextrous gaming mice on the market today – bar none.

Of course, the Razer Diamondback Chroma is fully Synapse control suite compliant, and Razer did a great job getting the dashboard setup for users to tweak the function of their mouse buttons or even the lighting design of the Chroma system. Overall, the new Razer Diamondback Chroma is a terrific update to an amazing gaming mouse. Whether you are right or left-handed, you will not be disappointed in its new incarnation. Razer has managed to keep all the good things inherent in the mouse while upgrading it smartly. The Razer Diamondback Chroma is available now for $89.99 at the official Razer website. For $10 dollars more, there is going to be a Collector’s Edition of the mouse on the Razer website, which will come in some special packaging to mark the revival of the mouse.

Tokyo Marui M870 Breacher Airsoft Shotgun Review

airsplat-m870-breacher-shotgun

Tokyo Marui, a company long-known for not only inventing the airsoft gun but, also, bringing unrivaled quality to their work, has brought its M870 Breacher airsoft shotgun to the US. AirSplat, long-time friend of our site, let us borrow one for a spell so we could get blasting with a modern-day “street howitzer”. This is the small brother to the full size Tokyo Marui M870 airsoft shotgun, albeit with a few important changes.

Of course, the biggest difference between the two airsoft shotguns is the overall length and stock modification. The breacher variant of the M870 measures only 35 inches in length! I was worried that this small size would mean it would be fragile. Afterall, Tokyo Marui is known to use a lot of plastic in their airsoft guns. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is actually a decent amount of metal and plastic in this airsoft shotgun. The forend and furniture are plastic while the barrel and other important bits are metal. It weighs a beefy five pounds and provides a strong, pistol style grip for the shooter to hold on to. Within this pistol grip lies the gas tank for the airsoft gun – a small, magazine-like gas tank. This is in contrast to the large stock tank found on the full size M870. Thankfully, despite its smaller size it holds a very decent amount of gas and I was able to get anywhere between 50 and 60 shots from it before having to refill it. As each airsoft shotgun shell (one is included in the box) contains 30 BBs (each shot fires 3), you will have to reload after you go through 5 or 6 shells.

m870-breacher-in-box

Speaking of shells, the Tokyo Marui M870 Breacher airsoft shotgun uses the standard multi-shot compatible versions that you can find for dirt-cheap online – so that is a nice little savings! The shells are also available in a multitude of color variations if you need to denote some specific tactical purpose in your gameplay. Of course, you can also get some actual Tokyo Marui airsoft shotgun shells if you want the best…

One of the most unique things about the Tokyo Marui M870 Breacher airsoft shotgun is its multi-shot capability. In its default configuration, one pump of the shotgun’s forend loads one BB into its three inner barrels. However, with the flick of a switch hidden in the ejection port, one pump of the forend will load two BBs into the three inner barrels, making for a six BB burst per trigger pull! Of course, loading two BBs per barrel does decrease the FPS slightly, but nothing too noticeable if you are playing in CQB fields like Tac City Airsoft here in Southern California.

Playing airsoft with the Tokyo Marui M870 Breacher airsoft shotgun is, no pun intended, an absolute blast. It is so small that it maneuvers around corners easily and its top rail allows for a reflex sight to be added with no issue (see the promo image for this article above). Additionally, there is a great tactile response in using the airsoft shotgun. The sound and feel of racking the forend back before firing your next shot hearkens to pretty much every action movie ever made – only, this time, YOU are the star instead of some actor. Even the sound of this airsoft shotgun is nice and loud, something I was not prepared to hear while using it.

tokyo-marui-m870-breacher-gas-shotgun-black-5

I highly recommend getting an optic of some kind mounted onto the M870 Breacher’s top rail. Without any iron sights to speak of, it is nice to have a central aimpoint to line up your cone of fire. With three fixed hop up units (one per inner barrel), I was surprised to find out that the airsoft gun has some serious accuracy. Get a dialed-in optic on it and you will have a distinct advantage over those more traditional AEGs on the field. Also, you will definitely need to buy some additional shells for this airsoft shotgun as each shell only holds 10 (or 5) shots depending on your fire mode. I recommend the M870 shell holder add-on as it provides a convenient place to store extra shells without needing to put another pouch on your airsoft belt or chest rig. Additionally, if you want to add an M4 style stock to your M870 Breacher, Angry Gun makes a modification called the Angry Gun Retractable Tank Stock for TM870. This uses the entire stock as the gas tank instead of the included, smaller magazine. Be warned, however, that the modification costs about $200 dollars.

Overall, Tokyo Marui’s M870 Breacher airsoft shotgun is a terrific close quarters airsoft game option. At three or six BBs per trigger pull, you will send a lot of plastic hurling towards opposing players and have a great time doing it. The Tokyo Marui M870 Breacher airsoft shotgun retails for $329 over at AirSplat’s official website. It is available now!

H1Z1 – A Preview (PC)

h1z1-930

The video game industry has a tendency to get into trends when it comes to video game themes or choosing a default bad guy. The industry has seen massive waves of games that featured aliens, vampires, mutants, and Nazis. Well, we are currently seeing this trend again, but this time it is with zombies. Zombies have become the default bad guy of recent years, with many games being released that features the walking dead. Games like Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, DayZ, 7 Days to Die, and Call of Duty have shown the industry that zombie games sell, and now everyone wants a bite of the action. Today, I look at yet another zombie game by Daybreak Games (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) that is currently on Early Access on Steam called H1Z1.

H1Z1 is set in a post-zombie-apocalyptic world where you play as a survivor, trying to make it through a changed world. The story of H1Z1 is mostly created by the players. There isn’t any dialogue, quests, or city hubs. You are placed with just the clothes on your back, into the middle of a zombie rich environment and set out to survive. It would be very hard to play H1Z1 without making comparisons to DayZ, since they both have very similar styles. You will spend the first part of any game running from everything that might cause you harm, while searching for weapons, ammo, and other supplies so you can survive your first night.

h1z1-941

There are no safe zones in H1Z1, your life is constantly being threatened. It’s not only the zombies that are out to get you either, it’s the other players that are on the server. H1Z1 is an open world PvP game. Everyone you meet could possibly kill you at any moment, or help you if you approach them nicely. But let’s be real here, this is the internet. Just assume EVERY player is out to kill you and you might actually live a day or two in H1Z1. The only people that band together are the ones that set out to play together. I have yet to meet another player that didn’t try to kill me at first sight.

H1Z1 is heavy on items. Weapons, clothing, equipment, crafting materials, and vehicles can be found throughout the open world. There will also be air drops that will appear during game play, but these end up being huge kill zones for PvP action, where “to the winner goes the spoils” is the only rule. The crafting system is pretty deep and you can make a ton of items that will help you increase your ability to stay alive. Anything from tools, weapons, animal traps, even water collectors can be crafted to help make your stay in the zombie apocalypse a comfortable one. H1Z1 also features base building, so if you do happen to find some people that don’t immediately rip your face clean off, you can work together towards building a base that you can barricade yourself inside of. Don’t get your hopes up though, the face ripping community of H1Z1 is much stronger and more numerous than the base building community.

Currently, there is one other game mode that can be played in H1Z1, and that is Battle Royale. Battle Royale is very similar to the game mode that was introduced in Arma 3, where a large group of players are placed into the environment via parachute and commence to kill each other until only one remains. Prizes are given out to the top ten competitors, and this game mode is extremely popular with the streaming community. There is also now a Hardcore Battle Royale mode that includes environment dangers, such as bears and zombies. This game mode removes all pretense of working together that the normal version of H1Z1 tries to have. Throughout the game, gas will be dropped that makes the playable area smaller and smaller, so players must stay within the game zone in order to continue fighting. Staying in the gas for too long means you will die and your game will be cut short. This is a one death type of game, so be prepared to have many games cut short if you can’t get the right drops early on.

h1z1-981

H1Z1 is still in Early Access, so there are still bugs that the developers are dealing with. Frame rate issues, hackers, and glitches can be plentiful at times, but the core game is solid. The real questions comes down to whether H1Z1 is better than DayZ in the end, and that’s going to be a tough one to call at this point. I see positives and negatives to both titles. DayZ has a better aesthetic and visuals to it right now, but I like H1Z1’s crafting system. Zombies, for both games, are an ancillary threat compared to the player community. The player community is out for your head in both games, so that’s a tie. H1Z1 does have the Battle Royale game mode, but if you have Arma 3 then you have already played the hell out of that mode.

H1Z1 will be free to play once released, but is currently $19.99 for the Early Access privilege. H1Z1 will be released on the PC and the PlayStation 4 once it is all done and looks extremely promising. While I am personally over the whole zombie genre in video games, H1Z1 and DayZ have both been my go to games for my zombie fix. It will be great to see how both these products turn out at their full release.

The Talos Principle Review (PS4)

the-talos-principle-1118604

I think therefore I am.
-Descrates

“You will be required to do wrong no matter where you go. It is the basic condition of life, to be required to violate your own identity. At some time, every creature which lives must do so. It is the ultimate shadow, the defeat of creation; this is the curse at work, the curse that feeds on all life. Everywhere in the universe.”
― Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Normally here at GamingShogun.com we don’t try to hit you with a philosophical idioms when starting off a review but The Talos Principle brings out the amateur philosopher in me. Up front it needs to be said, besides having studied the above works and authors, I have repeatedly watched I, Robot and one of my top five films of all time is Blade Runner. Surprisingly, both versions of BR I feel hold their own values and truths and I feel are superior to the work they are based off of “Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?” (a sophomoric position but one I stand by). By these quotes and these admissions you may have guessed I couldn’t wait to dive into The Talos Principle.

talos-2014-12-14-14-49-35-72

Hands On:
I’m skipping the Features and Description and diving right into the review because the quotes above work as the description and the features are fairly straight forward. The puzzles are spatial style for the most part, similar to a cross between Portal and Myst’s stunning visual landscapes that showcase the graphic abilities of the PS4. There are other puzzles that are “Tetris” style block / shape puzzles. The further you get into the game the more complex the puzzles and there are divergent paths of play which lead to different endings. If you want just a fun puzzling game the gameplay doesn’t require anything deeper than that to beat it. At it’s simplest The Talos Principle is a challenging puzzle game that has hours of entertainment and brain exercise.

the-talos-principle-screen-3png-886a25.png

If you want to go deeper into the game, it delves into ancient philosophy and how it effects the present and the future of what we define as “life.” Ahead are some spoilers but they are given more as points of interest on a journey than to damage a player’s experience and reference for those who wish to understand a little better what the creation is going on in this game.

In the beginning, of the game and for purposes of the protagonist The Beginning, Elohim (ancient Hebrew for God) created His Garden for Man (or in this case Robot) then placed His Child into The Garden to test his worthiness to ascension. During these tests, Elohim has bestowed His Child with never-ending life so he may learn but should he fail the tests The Child and all of his descendants will know only Death.

It is hinted in the game through ancient scripture and parables that children of metal and fluid have been built and tested throughout all time and that to this point all have failed. Once being made of brass and quicksilver the metal children now look just like Sonny from I, Robot. If you haven’t seen I, Robot you will have a bit of a harder time grasping the story than someone who has seen it a few times. If you have seen and actually engaged in Blade Runner or read “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” you will be ahead of the game. If you ever studied the heavyweights of philosophy such as Descartes, Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato this will seem old hat. What you really need to think about is at what point does decision making become life and identity.  The game presents you with different takes on the arguments from different time periods, many of which are also the beautifully rendered background sections for the game.  For example it might look like Egyptian ruins when the parables are about the Sphinx.  There is no need to build a great rendering of the collapsing Roman aqueducts to discuss Roman philosophers or build spacial puzzles but it is a great addition.

At the center of The Gardens is a forbidden tower which Stephen King fans may immediately associate with The Dark Tower and you can tell that King had drawn upon some of the same ancient beliefs when he build his.  To me it reminds me a bit more of maybe the Tower Of Babel… but I may be saying too much.

The-Talos-Principle3

There is a solid backstory, where a robot needs to be tested for being actual life rather than simply programming and it is a puzzle in itself, the pieces scattered throughout the game for those who want a philosophical puzzle as well as brain teasers. The Philip K. Dick quote above is remarkably accurate toward one of the several possible solutions of the puzzle and seems to almost play out word for word on the screen but there is more than one possible ending just as there is no right answer to the philosophical debate, it wouldn’t be ancient if it had one answer. There is one ending at least with the kitten from the title art too in case you get an ending without it and think it was a bait and switch (it may be the only non robotic creature in the game).  The one problem I have is the backstory has a catalyst which seemed a bit far fetched with so many possible, tangible and terrifying close reasons for why we may want to have humans of metal, philosophy and possibly faith.

talos-2014-12-20-20-39-58-05

Final Thoughts:
The Talos Principle will have me thinking about it long after I put the final thoughts to this review. The Talos Principle works on many levels, being a fun and challenging puzzle game at its simplest and being an ancient and complex philosophical debate just below the surface that goes as deep as your mind decides to take it. It may even encourage players to look up and study the philosophies the game brings up, making them less machines and more active creatures in the exploration of life, identity and creation. In short more human.
