Space… it’s really big! As our national space program backs away from exploration and the possibility of colonizing other worlds, it has become the domain of the corporations and it is no doubt that a company or conglomerate that will eventually achieve these space-worthy goals in the distant future. First they have to retrace the steps that nations have already taken and possibly improve the footing and lower the risks. It is with this idea in mind that Bohemia Interactive’s Take On Mars takes the steps we have already taken to explore the red planet and goes to even further.
Description:
Explore the rocky terrain and sandy wastes of Mars in this brand new installment to the Take On series. Developed by the creators of the award-winning Arma™ series and DayZ™, Take On Mars places you right in the middle of mankind’s most exciting undertaking. Start out in the seat of a rover operator, pushing your vehicles to the max. Finish as the first human to have ever set foot on Mars. With a scientific arsenal at your disposal, you will pioneer the exploration of another planet, unlocking the secrets of Mars’ distant past.
Features:
– Space Program Campaign – Explore the Red Planet from the perspective of a science-driven space agency. Become a rover operator, allowing you to control various fully simulated mobile rovers and stationary landers, and make your way through numerous scientific missions.
– Realistic Terrain – Travel across a vast, unforgiving Martian terrain with locations based on actual satellite data from famous locations such as Victoria Crater and Deimos.
– Economy – Increase your budget by completing missions and individual tasks. Develop new technologies, vehicles and instruments to tackle the challenges you meet along the way.
– Dynamic Destruction System – Break off cameras, robotic arms, even individual struts and wheels, all affecting the way your vehicle handles.
– Content Creation – Create your own scenarios and share them on the Steam Workshop, or just play around with whatever you wish in this limitless, free-form mode. Dive into Take On Mars’ powerful Workbench editing suite to develop new terrains, addons and total modifications.
– Expedition One – Take on the role of a marsonaut and establish the foundation for a human colony on Mars. Build your own habitat, drive unpressurized and pressurized manned vehicles, and manage the resources needed to keep you alive.
Hands On:
The game is still in Early Access which is a very generic term that could be anywhere from alpha testing to finished product just waiting for the release date. In this case it seems to be in the late alpha stage, which means it can still change dramatically before it hits retail. Many features are still just being implemented such as multiplayer and others still aren’t in place in the game such as most of the tutorials. If you like alpha testing and exploring the game mechanics as much as a foreign planet then this is the perfect phase to jump in at. Since instructions are still very limited you have to figure out intuitively how to do most things and why certain things work and others don’t.
With that in mind this is a game for serious simulator fans at this point though once the tutorials are in place it may be more broad based user-friendly. You start from humble beginnings with probes that look like bell dinghies straight out of the beginning of Jaws and work your way up to planetary colonization for by yourself then with others online. I don’t want to give away too much, this much was apparent in the trailers for the game but you get pretty detailed oriented in designing rovers and other tools of the space trade. And like a trade there are budgets and bonuses for completion of important missions and eventually the company expects a return in the form of new real estate developments where there is more than one moon in the sky. It doesn’t take you as far as Total Recall but it does take you farther than the world’s governmental space agencies ever will and I wouldn’t be surprised if you could build Johnny Cab in a future installment (ok let’s face it it will be named Sony Cab or something).

If you follow the campaign mode it will take a while before you have boots on the red planet or even our moon for that matter. As Dr. Whitehall is fond of saying “Discovery requires experimentation”. That means probing and roving so be prepared. If you get too anxious to stomp around and run space buggies then there are scenarios available, at the time of print it even included the E3 demo builds which are pretty detailed and get you past a lot of the research work and right into the action. Action tends towards the simulation side of things, so don’t expect space shootouts or Nazis on the darkside of the moon (Ed. note: GREAT movie!). It is more like taking two hours to master the controls of a robotic arm so you can take a soil sample.
The multiplayer is already proving to be the star of the game, with scenarios that let you and some friends get together and have some red dust filled shenanigans. They require knowledge of the game and building systems but still give you some room to play around.
Conclusion:
Once again, this is a preview of an Early Access title and the game has a ways to go to get to a finished product. If you are a fan of serious sim games then Take On Mars is definitely one to keep on your radar.
I do enjoy a good fighting game from time to time. Remembering when I was younger, lining up my quarters on the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat machine at the arcade only to be quickly stomped into submission when it was finally my turn at the controls. Needless to say, I’ve never really been that good at them. However, a solid fighting game like the most recent Mortal Kombat or Injustice: God’s Among Us can definitely take the sting of suck away when the beauty and fluidity of a fighting game takes hold. However, DoA5: Last Round fails to outdo its predecessors, not just recently, but over the history of fighting games taking hold in the gaming world.
First off, I’ve never played any of the previous DoA titles so I’m focusing just on the game mechanics, controls, and pretty much the raw game play. Now I will say, if you’re a fan of the series, the cut-scenes and story lines do continue along with what seems to be an ever-running story. However, if I wanted to watch a movie, I’d go do that instead (you wouldn’t really call me a fan of titles like Max Payne 3 and other games which focus more on the story than game play since I can pay half of the price of a game for a Blu-ray).
As far as the fighting mechanics itself, this is where Dead or Alive 5: Last Round falls flat. The fighting mechanics remind me a lot of old arcade titles like Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers where slow moving characters make some bone-crunching moves, knocking out barriers or electrifying arena ropes. However, a lack of jumping took me out of the action almost immediately. Again, not having been a long-time DoA player, I was constantly, out of habit, attempting to jump up, jump over my opponent, combine with a flying jump kick, anything. Alright, so maybe that’s a normal DoA thing but that just wasn’t doing it for me with characters that almost walk through the entire fight.
In-game cinematics like pre-game character verbal taunts are screamingly awful in how they are not synced up to the characters lips. Come on, people. This is 2015! They were doing that back in the Nintendo GameCube days. What happened to taking some extra time and giving your characters some more life so they dont look like they’re dubbing over a poorly translated 80’s ninja film. There’s really no excuse for that, ESPECIALLY with how much time is put into developing these characters and making them look as attractive as possible.
And let’s go with that statement for just a moment. What’s really the whole point of this game – playing a solid fighting game, or staring at huge digital breasts plowing out of skimpy outfits? While the mass of character choices is a positive feature of the game, the choice of clothes per character is ridiculous. Some have over a dozen different costumes to choose from. From the game mechanics, it seems that the real concern was how foxy they could make each round of combat? It doesn’t matter to me how a character in a game looks in an outfit if they cant seem to hold it together in the ring. Characters almost seem to quickly teleport from one position to the next when standing up from a hit or using some actions without their body going through all the motions. The hit points are somewhat off as well as there can sometimes be a delay from hitting an action button to the move being performed on-screen at times. This may be due to the somewhat sluggish movements from the characters, especially after recovering from a heavy hit but it not only makes the game frustrating, it also makes a slow battle even slower. And while you may be able to use the one-button punch mechanic over and over to cheat your way through a fight at times, it seems that the computer enjoys doing the exact same thing as well, preventing you from getting a shot across due to your character overacting a simple punch to the face (I thought these were professional fighters).
From the perspective of a gamer who has never played a DoA game in the series, DoA5:LR reminded much of the bummer that was the Fight Club game, a fighting game that just didn’t seem complete, was rushed to release, and was too slow to keep me enthralled in all the fighting (and in the case of DoA, bouncing) happening on screen. Maybe that’s why this game just didn’t do it for me, I suppose. I’d much rather play and enjoy a well crafted game than try to figure out what skimpy leather outfit looks best on the big-breasted blonde. This is a video game, not a dress-up session for a doll house with chronic assault issues.

New York (March 18, 2015) – Sumthing Else Music Works, through its licensing relationship with Capcom, today announced that the official soundtrack for Resident Evil® Revelations 2 is now available for digital download from Sumthing.com and other major digital music sites. The Resident Evil® Revelations 2 Original Soundtrack features over three hours of original score from Capcom’s new entry in the ground-breaking survival horror video game series which has sold over 50 million units worldwide.
Defining a new musical direction for the series, the original score for Resident Evil Revelations 2 was created and supervised by Capcom’s composer and sound director Kota Suzuki (Resident Evil® Revelations, Resident Evil® 6, Resident Evil® 5) in collaboration with film composer and multi-instrumentalist Nima Fakhrara (“Gatchaman,” “The Pyramid,” “The Courier”) as well as composer and sound designer Ichiro Kohmoto (Resident Evil Revelations, Resident Evil® 0). The soundtrack was produced by Koyo Sonae. Music samples are available at Sumthing.com.
“Our main theme of focus was ‘duality of sound’ implemented through original instruments,” describes Kota Suzuki, composer and sound director of the Resident Evil® series. “We assembled this compilation with two distinct genres of sound in mind. Aiming for the overall music to deliver a broad, airy feel, while at the same time introducing acoustic instruments to create gaps within the sound, the composition reduces how quickly players grow accustomed to the music, and allows for sound effects to easily create the game’s desired atmosphere.”
Describing Capcom’s collaboration with Nima Fakhrara, a film composer renowned for creating unique instruments as the basis for his original scores, Kota Suzuki added, “We always kept aiming to provide players with a new sense of suspense and surprise with this installation. His productions possessed that particular element of darkness that worked perfectly with our[s]. After many brainstorming sessions we decided to use ‘iron’ and ‘water’ as our concepts in creating new instruments. And, after recording, we edited and mixed the sound with other tracks to create a truly unique sound…His touch was exactly what we needed to give our sound the definitive edge.”
The beginning of the Resident Evil Revelations 2 tale sees fan favorite Claire Redfield make a dramatic return. Survivor of the Raccoon City incident depicted in previous Resident Evil® games, Claire now works for the anti-bioterrorism organization Terra Save. She and Moira Burton are attending a company party for Terra Save when unknown armed forces storm the office, capture Claire and Moira and take them to a dark and abandoned detention facility on a mysterious island. Headed for the remote island in search of his missing daughter, Barry Burton meets brand new character Natalia Korda, a little girl who has a strange power that allows her to sense enemies and hidden items. Using this skill alongside Barry’s proven combat abilities, players will need to alternate between the two to survive the mysterious island and find Moira. With terrifying enemies waiting around every dark corner, players will need to use their ammo and weapon supply wisely, in classic survival horror style.
Evolving the episodic chapter set-up of the original Resident Evil Revelations, Resident Evil Revelations 2 initially released as a weekly series of four episodic downloads beginning on February 24, 2015. A full digital download option of the Complete Season is currently available to ensure fans can get access to all individual episodes now. Each episode in Resident Evil Revelations 2 includes Raid Mode content and two full playable scenarios focused on the Claire and Moira storyline as well as the Barry and Natalia campaign. The full retail disc version, including all individual episodes and all additional game content, is available now across North America.
