The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 Announced

unwritten2

Vienna, AUSTRIA (February 11th 2013) – Nordic Games and KING Art have today announced a unique collaboration which will see The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 – the sequel to the much-loved 2011 adventure – released beginning of 2015.

Keen to push the boundaries of the niche point and click genre, KING Art has also launched a Kickstarter to raise funds to develop additional on-top content for the game.

View The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 Kickstarter page here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kingartgames/487759540?token=89e2435a

“This is a very ambitious project”, says Martin Kreuch, Producer at Nordic Games. “The fans have been waiting for a new adventure in the world of Aventasia that continues the story of BoUT 1. We have a long and very fruitful track-record working with KING Art, which is why it is important to us to support them in any way that is needed. If KING Art wants to try out something new, why should we be hindering them in doing so? At first, it seemed strange to us thinking about an already funded game being on Kickstarter, but then we were amazed about the possibility to get direct feedback from the crowd about this additional on-top content and features.”

“We’re thrilled to be working alongside Nordic Games again on The Book of Unwritten Tales 2,” adds Jan Theysen, Creative Director, KING Art. “At a later stage of the development process – production start was in October 2012 –, we suggested to Nordic Games to add additional features (multiple ways to solve certain puzzles, optional sidequests with different outfits to customise the appearance of your character etc.) and more community communication to further improve the game. Based on our very positive experience with Kickstarter on a different project (Battle World: Kronos), we suggested involving the community directly via Kickstarter to see if these features are something that gamers would like to see in an adventure game. Every cent from the campaign goes directly into the on-top content and we are excited to see how the adventure community will react to our ambitious plans.”

Released in 2009, The Book of Unwritten Tales was highly acclaimed by press and critics alike. The sequel continues the story of the beloved protagonists of the first part and its add-on.

Acoustic Sheep SleepPhones Review (Tech)

gray_front_0

Acoustic Sheep’s SleepPhones market themselves as “Pajamas for your ears”. I can see why – the material of this comfy headband feels pajama-like, and they do keep your ears warm at night. What this headband really does, however, is contain two small headphone drivers which allow you to listen to music while you try and get to sleep. Read on to find out if the SleepPhones actually work!

The headband is made from synthetic material that is very soft and comfortable. The SleepPhones are available in three colors: Soft Grey, Midnight Black, and Soft Lavender. Inside the headband, the two small headphones speakers are noticeable but not painful – even when sleeping on your side. Acoustic Sheep recommends wearing the SleepPhones in one of three ways. The first way is to wear the headband like a headband, with the speaker wire sticking out of the back. The second method (which worked best for me in terms of keeping good sound quality) was wearing the SleepPhones as a sleeping mask, covering your eyes to block out excess light. The final method for wearing the SleepPhones is sort of the reverse of the first method – this time with the speaker wire coming from the front side of your head.

Unfortunately, the headphone speakers are tethered to a cable which is used to plug into your radio or MP3 player. When this cable is pulled or bumped, it can move the speakers around inside the headband. It can be a bit of a challenge to make sure the drivers stay in place next to your ears as opposed to moving out of place. When this happens, you will not hear much of anything as the drivers are very position-dependent. The solution to this problem is to shell out the extra cash for the wireless SleepPhones, which retail for $99.99. These model uses Bluetooth technology that should help alleviate the cable problems.

SV4BM 600_0

This is why the SleepPhones work best when used as a sleep mask. In this position, there is still the opportunity for the speakers to move around a bit, but everything is in line with your ears, so a little movement is not as noticeable. When using the SleepPhones in a more traditional, headband fashion, the speakers don’t cover all of your ear, making even the slightest movement more apparent with a loss of audio. I should also mention that if you sleep in the same bed as someone else, be careful with how high your volume is, as the SleepPhones speakers can be fairly loud to outsiders. I had to keep the volume of my music very low as to not wake my wife.

Despite the cable issue, the question that still has to be answered is if the SleepPhones do what they tout? Do they help you get to sleep better? In short: Yes. While wearing the SleepPhones, I did notice that I was able to get to sleep more quickly than without listening to any music. Of course, I did wake up once in a panic because I accidentally pulled the speaker wire with my arm in my sleep, causing my iPhone radio dock to come crashing down onto my floor, but I digress.

Conclusion

Overall, I love the idea of the Acoustic Sheep SleepPhones more than the actual execution of the $39.95 dollar base model. While they do a decent job of providing you some music to fall asleep to, the base model has a big problem in the way of its speaker cable. However the issues I experienced with it would be remedied by paying a little extra for the wireless model. If I didn’t encounter such issue with the cable, I would have easily ranked these a star higher.

MFT REACT Short Grip Review (Airsoft)

new-2014-0025 copy

Mission First Tactical, or, “MFT” makes  a large amount of firearms accessories. Accessories like magazines, sights, lasers, and more. While some kinds of products don’t really matter to the world of airsoft gaming – many do. For instance, the MFT REACT Short Grip is a short vertical fore grip designed for those shooters or airsoft players who prefer to use the thumb break method in their shooting. Measuring a scant 3.9″ inches in length, the REACT Short Grip is just the right size for most hands, and even comes with an internal, water tight storage space for batteries or other small pieces of gear. Whats interesting about this grip, though, is that its length is actually long enough to be usable for CQB grips as well on short-muzzle airsoft guns. That makes it a rather versatile option, no matter if you run with an M4 or something like an MP5.

The REACT Short Grip is available in Black, Flat Dark Earth, Foliage Green, Grey, and Scorched Dark Earth color varieties and retails for $24.99, well within the price range of a good vertical fore grip. Heck, at $24.99, this real steel fore grip is a better deal than many “airsoft quality” grips out there. The grip features a nice, textured surface and I had no issues keeping hold of it while wearing my Mechanix gloves as well as with only my bare hand. The MFT REACT Short Grip attaches to your rail system with one bolt and pressure clamp and, once tightened down, had no wobble in it at all. Again, this is a real steel fore grip, so the quality needs to be top notch – your life could depend on it in a fire fight.

Overall

Overall, the Mission First Tactical REACT Short Grip is an amazing vertical fore grip for your airsoft gaming. Not only is it made in the United States but, it’s also available in a multitude of colors to go with whatever color scheme you desire. More importantly, it has “real steel” build quality which will give you the ruggedness you need to handle whatever your airsoft game, MilSim or otherwise, can throw at it.

Shutterball Remote Shutter For Smart Phones (Mobile/Tech)

1231446_319384294873130_177813665_n

At CES everyone who passed the display with the little balls on rubber dongles had to pick them up and hold them. I was no different, there was just something about the little buggers. Once I got a hold of one at home and found out what it did it was even harder to leave alone. Turns out they were “Shutterballs”, little remote shutter controls for your smartphone that enable you to take “selfies” at farther than arm’s length.

Features:

  •  Simple Press of the ball releases the shutter
  •  Perfect for selfie or group portraits without distortion or contortion
  •  Easily snap group photos from up to 60′ away
  •  App triggers your smartphone camera for sharp still or video
  •  Loop onto your jeans, bag or keychain
  •  Coin cell battery pre-installed lasts up to 5 years

1010357_295468367264723_157305195_n

Hands On:
Pairing is as simple as downloading a free app and following the on-screen instructions. Once you do, the ball works the same as if you pushed the shutter button on your phone. So, if you have the phone set to take pics from the front camera then hit the button on the ball it will take from the front camera, same setup for the rear camera. This is handy if you are on vacations and want to get monuments or landscapes in the background of your selfie, you aren’t limited by proximity. The Shutterball is small enough to hide in your hand easily by just curling your fingers around it. This is handy if you get any color other than black because that way people won’t be wondering what that bright colored thing in your hand is.

The best use of the Shutterball that I can think of is that you can use it to remotely take video as well. This is great if you want to shoot some kind of video project or message using your phone. You can do a “standup” at an event or even set the camera where you want and with the push of the ball start recording a skit in front of it. If you want to keep the camera in the exact same spot for two shots, maybe one with you in it and one with you out of it so you can make yourself “disappear” you don’t have to worry about accidentally moving the camera between takes while pressing the button, it is all remote.

audiovox-shutterball-smartphone-remote-shutter-control-d-00010101000000292377_alt1-300x300

Last Call:
The Shutterball is a simple thing with tons of possibilities that will help take your photography and videography to the next step. It’s inexpensive, $24.99 dollar price point makes it budget-friendly and I expect the Shutterball to catch on like wildfire once word starts to spread about it.

Loadout – A Review (PC)

loadout

Edge of Reality has brought us a brand new, free to play, third person shooter called Loadout. What separates Loadout from other third person shooters is the custom weapons that players can design, test, and then use in the game’s arenas. Loadout’s design is completely on the side of “over the top” when it comes to its humor, gore, and weapon design. Edge of Reality went with the idea that, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth over doing and it works for Loadout.

Story

Here’s the thing about Loadout’s story line: There isn’t one. Not a scrap of story to be found anywhere in this game, and I am fine with that. Some games can carry themselves just purely on fun gameplay, and that is exactly what Loadout does.

gameplay

When you begin the game, you have to set up your first loadout. These loadouts consist of a character skin and two weapons. The characters that you can choose from are limited to one of three skins; beefy white guy, beefy black guy, or beefy white girl. The default skins offer no customization at all, unless you buy the Spacebux from Edge of Reality. I will get into that a little more later.

Loadout is really all about the weaponcrafting, and you get to carry two custom weapons in each loadout. You begin by selecting one of four chassis, either beam, missile, slug or pulse. The chassis determines how the basic gun will behave. After you have selected the basic chassis, then you are ready to add on more parts to further customize your weapon. You can change the barrel, magazine, stock, scope, ammo, and other parts to truly customize your weapon. The more you level up, the more choices you will be given. Here’s the cool thing, you pay for your upgrades with currency that you earn in game, not the purchasable Spacebux.

What I really liked about the weapon customization was how Edge of Reality would let you outfit your gun and test it prior to spending one point of currency. You can choose all the available upgrades that you want to see how they work, then hit test and are sent to a single player shooting range. You get to see the damage that your new weapon can deal on stationary and moving targets, and then decide on whether or not that configuration will work for you. It’s never final until you hit the buy button.

04

Since I’ve already touched on it twice, let’s get the free to play thing out of the way. Edge of Reality has done Loadout’s free to play model right, in my opinion. You can purchase Spacebux with real currency, but what Spacebux can buy are customization options for your character or experience boosts, which has no advantage during the actual gameplay. Everything that you need to customize your weapons and increase your firepower is bought with in game currency, therefore Loadout is absolutely not a pay to win game. You have the same chance of winning and killing others as someone of equal level that has spent hundreds of dollars in Spacebux, you just don’t look as good. The customization options for your characters range from absolutely silly, hardcore military style, to just hard to watch. I played against a character that choose the naked skin costume, and it was disturbing to see his pixelated man bits flopping around. I personally went with the Baseball Furies costume from The Warriors, oh yeah.

Ok, that’s four paragraphs right there on the customization of Loadout, so let’s talk about how the dang game actually plays. Currently, I could only enter the casual game modes and not the competitive ones, but there were still a few modes to choose from. There is Death Snatch (kill confirmed), Jackhammer (capture the flag), Extraction (collect the shiny bits and run to a set point), and finally Blitz (control point). These games are all set for 4 vs 4 action, or 4 vs AI if you are looking for some cooperation gameplay with your friends. I generally just looked for random games and game types, and was consistently put into full games where the action was fast and fun.

Actual gameplay is a blast and reminds me of the old Unreal 2k3 days. With only two weapons, your loadout becomes extremely important but you can also pick up other people’s guns after you have blasted them into itty bitty pieces. Jumping is a viable dodge technique, as is the actual double tap to dodge, so get used to aiming at bouncing characters. Maps are designed well, with side passages to sneak up on people. I feel that the maps are the right size most of the time, though I hated that sometimes in Blitz one team had no chance just because the control point spawned near someone that was already there.

Aesthetics

Loadout is over the top gore and humor at it’s finest for a free to play game. Weapons will literally blow parts off of you in a shower of cartoony blood and bits. A hard enough shot that doesn’t kill you will completely damage your character. A head shot will just leave you with your brain and two eyes on eyestalks, or a chest wound can leave you running around with a large hole where your pecs used to be. If the shot does kill you, well then you are usually torn in half, or found hopping around on a bloody stump as you bleed out. Occasionally your character, if he or she is feeling especially full of it, will end his or her last breath by giving the enemy the finger before quietly passing on.

16

Sound is really well done to, but a little minimal when you really analyze it. There is no music during the actual gameplay, so sound effects is usually just weapon fire, explosions or heart beats when you get low on health. Voice acting is limited to just grunts, groans and yells for the characters, and announcement from the female narrator ala The Administrator from Team Fortress 2.

Final Thoughts

Loadout from Edge of Reality is how free to play game should be done. You can play the game without spending a single dollar and still be competitive and have fun, you just won’t have access to the myriad of great clothes options or taunts that the Spacebux can buy you. If you want a slick costume and really customize your character, then be prepared to shell out some real life dough. If not, then just be content with the default character. Gameplay wise, Loadout is just damn fun, it really is. I played Unreal 2k3 for hours upon hours because of how fun that game is, and Loadout feels like a spiritual successor to that title. Match-ups worked fine for me, though I do know that Edge of Reality has some issues during the first day or so of launch. Edge of Reality has said that they are working hard to fix that issue and will make it up to everyone who was affected. Look, the game is free. You loose absolutely nothing in trying it, and I really think that most of you out there will actually enjoy it. Loadout is available now through Steam.
