During tonight’s Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, Bethesda Game Studios announced the latest free update for Starfield is available tonight! Also announced during tonight’s ceremony was a September 30, 2024 release date for Shattered Space, Starfield’s highly anticipated new story expansion.
August Update
The free August Update introduces the REV-8 land vehicle. The REV-8 gives players the freedom to explore new frontiers — and reach new heights — in their very own cruiser.
The REV-8 comes equipped with a mounted turret, armor for additional protection when driving, room for a companion, and boosters to cover ground more quickly or get out of a sticky situation. Boosters can even add some jump to the ride, allowing players to sail through the air and reach areas that would have previously been much tougher to get to.
To launch the REV-8, head to a ship service technician to install a vehicle module. After being installed on their ship of choice, the REV-8 will automatically deploy outside the ship wherever players land.
Also available in the August Update are new Xbox Series S display settings to mirror existing Xbox Series X settings.
New settings:
Frame Rate Target: You can now choose between 30, 40, 60 or an Uncapped frame rate on VRR displays. If you do not have a VRR display running 120hz, you will still be able to select from 30 or 60. Screen tearing may occur at times when selecting 60 on a non-VRR display.
Prioritize: You can now prioritize between Visuals and Performance while trying to maintain the frame rate target. If you’re choosing a frame rate target of 60 or above, we recommend changing this to Performance. Prioritizing Visuals keeps the highest resolution while maintaining full detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds. Prioritizing Performance lowers internal resolution and detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds. Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes or action get heavier as well. When switching between modes, you will see the lighting change briefly as the system catches up to the new mode.
VSync: You can now toggle between VSync off or on. Choosing off will separate the game frames from the monitor’s refresh rate and may result in screen tearing. Toggling On will synchronize the frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate avoiding screen tearing but limiting number of frames.
Rebellion, one of the world’s most successful independent video game developers and publishers, has revealed Sniper Elite: Resistance. Terry will be ready to rumble next month for players who own or purchase the Year 2 Character Pass or Year 2 Ultimate Pass. The wicked M. Bison (available now) and easygoing Terry will soon be joined by Mai (Early 2025) and Elena (Spring 2025) to round out Year 2 of Street Fighter6. Stay tuned for more details!
Fans of the bestselling Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver video game series will be able to discover the franchise’s untold backstory in an all-new, original graphic novel titled Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise, now live on Kickstarter.
The project is being helmed by writers Joshua Viola (True Believers, It Came From the Multiplex) and Angie Hodapp (Unioverse, Shadow Atlas), with interior art by Juan Samu (Star Wars, Godzilla), colors by Zac Atkinson (Teen Titans), letters by Jeremiah Lambert (Masters of the Universe, Transformers), a main cover by Dave Rapoza (Destiny, Magic: The Gathering), variant covers by Aaron Lovett (Monster Train, Inkbound and film poster and cover artist Matthew Therrien (R. L. Stine’s Zombie Town, The Wrath of Becky), with additional art by Jonny Bush (Rob Zombie, Ghost) and Ninja Jo (Star Wars, Stranger Things). Brent Friedman (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Call of Duty) is providing narrative guidance alongside creative direction and input from Crystal Dynamics, including never-before-seen ideas and elements from unreleased Soul Reaver lore. The all-new graphic novel also features concept art by Daniel Cabuco, who provided concept art for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, and was the Art Director for Legacy of Kain: Defiance.
Arriving in time for the 25th Anniversary of the release of the original Soul Reaver game, the publication of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise will mark the first official new Soul Reaver narrative in two decades, since 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise delves into Raziel’s past as a human Sarafan warrior and his transformation into a vampire lieutenant under Kain. The story introduces new characters, including a mysterious vampire with deep connections to Raziel and Kain. This compelling tale explores and expands the existing canon while answering long-standing questions.
“Raziel’s story spans centuries, offering rich material to explore,” says co-writer Joshua Viola. “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise not only fills in the gaps but fleshes out his character in surprising ways, revealing more of what shaped him into the Raziel we know and pity. We have lots of surprises in store beyond the graphic novel that will blow fans’ minds.”
“It was important to Josh and me to find, after twenty years, the right place and time to re-enter this world,” said co-writer Angie Hodapp. “We wanted to find new stories about these characters that felt organic to the original canon — stories that would excite longtime fans of the games with plenty of familiar elements, while also inviting new fans to join in. With that in mind, and with the directive from Crystal Dynamics to introduce new characters while keeping our story lens tight on the known cast, Josh and I explored Raziel’s past…specifically, his human past and the genesis of his wings in the days before Kain cast him into the Abyss.”

During Opening Night Live at gamescom, Techland announced Dying Light: The Beast. Dying Light: The Beast is a thrilling 18+ hours standalone zombie adventure set in the post-apocalyptic Castor Woods, a once-popular tourist destination. After 13 years of enduring experiments, you escape and hunt down your captors to seek retribution, only to discover there’s far more at stake.
While the region is not as populated as it once was, there are still people and factions here, as well as plenty of horrors. Some will ask for your help, others will want to kill you. And that’s not to mention the mysterious creature that’s turned the woods into its personal hunting grounds.
Become the legendary hero
You are Kyle Crane, the man whose selflessness during the initial virus outbreak saved many from a fate worse than death. After more than a decade in captivity, you find yourself in a world that’s changed, and not for the better. Now, you’ll need to use the survival skills that kept you alive all those years ago to save even more innocent lives.
Nearly ten years after the launch of the original Dying Light, Techland also announced the return of voice actor Roger Craig Smith to his iconic role of Kyle Crane. “Stepping back into Kyle Crane’s shoes feels like a reunion with an old friend,” Smith said. “And even though he’s gone through a terrible time, there’s still plenty of legendary hero left in him.”
Explore a tightly-crafted open world
Welcome to Castor Woods! This once-bustling tourist destination is home to a diminishing number of survivors and an increasing population of zombies. Featuring natural landmarks, small villages and industrial complexes, the setting offers diverse traversal options, whether it’s using your parkour skills to gain the upper hand on your enemies or hopping into an abandoned 4×4 to outrun the horrors of the night.
Unleash the beast to survive
They caged you like an animal. Years of brutal experimentation took its toll, but the zombie DNA and yours are now intertwined so that you are able to unleash a beast-like power. It flows through your veins. No one can take it from you. Use it. And you’ll discover it’s not just a curse.
Surviving the night is easier in 4-player co-op
The day brings many possibilities to explore the region and make the most of your time while the sun is still out. But after sundown, the laws of nature take their course. Darkness tends to bring out the worst in the horde, leaving you with no other choice but to run, hide, or fight.
Sometimes it’s best to stick to a group. You never know what you might come across on your adventure. Team up in up to 4-player co-op, or ride solo if you have the guts to take it all on your own.
Ultimate owners get Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost
Development of Dying Light: The Beast originally started as a story DLC for Dying Light 2 Stay Human. But after two years of work, its size and scope has changed so much that it evolved into a standalone, self-contained experience.
To show appreciation for the community who patiently waited for the DLC, Techland will be offering Dying Light: The Beast at no extra cost to all owners of the Dying Light 2 Stay Human Ultimate Edition, delivering a full standalone adventure instead of just a DLC.
Dying Light: The Beast will be available on both PC and current-gen and last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Techland will reveal more details including the release date later this year. To always stay up to date you can wishlist Dying Light: The Beast now on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation.

Additionally, journalists and creators will get a chance to try a demo of Dune: Awakening behind closed doors, and share their impressions with the wider public.
Joel Bylos, Creative Director at Funcom, said, “Revealing gameplay for the first time is always a big moment, especially in a game where the interplay between all these systems can create completely unexpected moments, but the team has done an incredible job and we can’t wait to see how the community reacts.”
Working closely with both the Herbert Estate and Legendary, Funcom’s Dune: Awakening introduces an alternate history in which Paul Atreides was never born, giving players the opportunity to put the future of Arrakis in their own hands.
Sam Rappaport, Vice President of Interactive Media at Legendary Entertainment said, “We are incredibly excited for gamers to get their first glimpse of ‘Dune: Awakening’ at gamescom. The game’s authenticity and attention to detail successfully convey the richness and depth of the Dune universe in a manner that is reminiscent of the world beautifully presented in Denis Villeneuve’s films. This game is a testament to the dedication of the developers and a thrilling new way for fans to engage with the iconic saga.”
