PS4 gamers can jump right into the action across four new multiplayer maps, as well a new Zombies experience, which takes players to an undead island during the World War II Pacific Theater in a thrilling new chapter of the Origins saga.

“We know that fans are playing the hell out of our current selection of multiplayer and Zombies maps, which is why we have been working so hard to deliver an epic new DLC offering with Eclipse,” said Mark Lamia, Studio Head, Treyarch. “Suit up…it’s time to kick some ass again!”

Players can now dive into Eclipse’s four multiplayer maps: Knockout, Spire, Rift; and Verge, a re-imagining of the Call of Duty®: World at War classic, Banzai.
Knockout: Housed in a traditional Shaolin Temple with a retro twist, Knockout sets the stage for a Kung Fu tournament. This mid-sized map showcases a sharp contrast between the mid-range engagements of the traditional exterior architecture and the tight close-quarters of an eclectic 1970’s styled interior.
Spire: Spire takes multiplayer combat to a futuristic sub-orbital airport terminal set high in the clouds. Multiple levels and open areas promote intense, mid-range combat around a clean, high-tech civilian environment. Watch your step, because one wrong move could send you plummeting back through the stratosphere.

  • Rift: Players can head to the core of a harsh futuristic military complex, set high above an active caldera. Rift funnels and forces tight, intense engagements, where the only way through is forward. Players must utilize the unique core movement opportunities to outsmart and outplay enemies, as they traverse the suspended rail system.
  • Verge: In this re-imagination of the classic Call of Duty: World at War map, Banzai, Verge drops multiplayer combat into the center of a distant post-apocalyptic future, where two warring factions are entrenched in constant battle. Players must take control of the key bridge, fortresses, tunnel systems and waterfalls as they engage in high-speed action through this medium-sized map.
  • Eclipse also introduces the next highly-anticipated Zombies experience: Zetsubou No Shima, the second stop in the Call of Duty: Black Ops III Zombies storyline that spans the four DLC Map Packs for Black Ops III this year. The popular Origins characters continue on their mission to stop the zombie apocalypse. Our heroes find themselves stranded on a remote Pacific island, which is home to the Division 9 facility: a secret biological research lab whose experiments with Element 115 and its effects on human, animal, and plant biology has created horrors beyond belief. Zetsubou No Shima features a foliage rich island map, including new terrifying zombie enemies, a variety of innovative transport mechanics, more devastating traps and classic Zombies side quests that fans will gravitate to.

Eclipse is now available at a discounted rate via the Call of Duty: Black Ops III DLC Season Pass**, which features four DLC Map Packs planned for the year, as part of the discounted bundle offered at a suggested retail price of $49.99. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood Review

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has finally opened at Universal Studios Hollywood. No longer will the taste of butterbeer and chocolate frogs be relegated to the guests of Universal Studios Orlando. We got the chance to attend the park’s big media event on April 5th, 2016 – not only getting to see legendary John Williams conduct but, also, to hang out in Hogsmeade and give it the full review treatment.

The event began with us on the red carpet, getting to take shots of various celebrity guests. From the Harry Potter films were Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), and Warwick Davis (Griphook). Of course, there were plenty of other celebrities walking around, including Steven Spielberg and Billy Bob Thornton!

After the red carpet was concluded, we were ushered into the pit area of the stage setup near Hogwarts Castle. We were lucky to get a spot on the risers that had been setup to get a great view of the event. The opening ceremony featured speeches from numerous Universal and Warner Bros executives as well as L.A. Mayor, Eric Garcetti. Finally, some of the cast was brought on stage as was legendary, iconic composer John Williams. Williams then proceeded to conduct the L.A. Philharmonic as Hogwarts Castle became the canvas for some seriously awesome projection effects – topping the whole thing off with some great fireworks/pyrotechnics. The technicians behind the opening ceremony need to be commended for what was a great experience.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood is very similar to its Orlando sister – with some exceptions. The footprint of the Hollywood Wizarding World is only 6 acres, much smaller than that of the Florida attraction. This will not be visible to most guests, however, as much of that extra space in Florida was taken up by an additional roller coaster ride. Our Wizarding World of Harry Potter actually has an additional street not seen in Orlando, containing the wand shop. Overall, I actually like the flow of Hogsmeade in the Universal Studios Hollywood park a bit better. As expected, the architecture of the various Hogsmeade buildings and other minor details are all extremely well designed, and stepping into the area immerses you into the world created by author J.K. Rowling.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s signature attraction, taking guests on a trip through Hogwarts Castle and a flight alongside the likes of Harry Potter and more. The attraction is similar to the Universal Studios Florida version with one HUGE exception: Our ride features 3D video. This was somewhat of a controversial move, as during the area’s soft opening phase, it was reported that certain people were getting motion sickness because of the 3D video. Park engineers added fans in the ride cars that blow cool air onto the riders faces, which seems to have helped greatly. Personally, I could have done without the 3D video gimmick. The glasses/goggles given to riders that allow you to see the projection effects in 3D limit your field of vision and the 3D seems up-converted from 2D video with that slightly blurry look. Still, the overall ride experience is a lot of fun and I had a great time when I removed the glasses and took in as much of the physical, practical set pieces as much as possible. The ride designers did a spectacular job on this one. My biggest concern about Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is one that also plagues the Florida version of the ride: Its small seats. Be sure to utilize the test seats they have in front of the attraction to see if you will fit on the ride. Also, take time to enjoy the various set pieces located throughout the ride’s queue area. Along your walking route, you will see Harry Potter, Professor Dumbledore, and more in hologram form – the actors returning to their roles to film these small segments for the ride. I especially dug the moving portraits, made famous in the film.

Outside of the Forbidden Journey attraction, we had a terrific time taking in the sights around Hogsmeade. My favorite location was the Hogs Head Pub, where Universal Studios Hollywood set designers have recreated the watering hole and inn from the books with outstanding detail. A hog’s head (hence the name) mounted on the wall is an animatronic character and will randomly survey the room and snort. Be sure to listen at the base of the stairs leading to the Hogs Head Pub’s second floor. You are not permitted up there but, maybe you can overhear the people who are…

Also worth mentioning are the three special, Harry Potter themed beers that Universal Studios has ordered to serve at the pub. They have three themed offerings: a stout, a red, and a lager. I got the chance to taste each and they were all very good – each with their own taste offerings. Speaking of the previously-mentioned butterbeer. If you haven’t had the opportunity, I highly suggest you try it when you visit the park. Just be warned: You WILL become addicted to its sweet, sweet goodness. I prefer the frozen butterbeer but they also offer a more beer-like version. From what I hear, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando also has butterbeer ice cream and hot butterbeer! Those will, hopefully, be coming to our park at some point soon. If butterbeer or regular beer are not your favorites, you will also find pumpkin juice in Hogsmeade.

On the food front, the Three Broomsticks restaurant will provide some very good eats – way better than most theme park fare I have encountered. My favorite offerings are the bangers and mash plate, but you will also find shepard’s pie and a whole lot more. If your sweet tooth needs satiating, you should checkout Honeydukes candy shop. They have candy… LOTs of candy. I also discovered that they have butterbeer fudge. JUST. DO. IT!

wizarding-world-hollywood-381

A big part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is that the fun comes from exploration. Designers have installed actual props from the films throughout the area while not drawing undue attention to them. It all feels like it comes from the world of the books and films. There are so many easter eggs littering the area, it is a Harry Potter overload of information. For instance, I was personally surprised when entering the men’s restroom that park designers have built decorative, European style water tanks above each urinal and stall. Of course, they don’t do anything, but you find them in the area of Britain in which Harry Potter is based, so you find them here. I have also heard that there are some strange, ghostly moaning sounds coming from the girls restrooms. If you are female, you should probably go investigate.

Also, be sure to stop by Ollivanders Shop to purchase your own wand. A cool thing to do in Hogsmeade is to use your wand to interact with the various displays and store fronts with magic. The catch is that only certain wands will interact with them – look for the wand boxes with gold labels foil labels. I personally picked up the wand style wielded by Sirius Black (portrayed in the films by Gary Oldman). After getting your wand, look inside for the map of Hogsmeade with the various spells you have to cast at each interactive location. Be very specific, though, as you don’t want to have a negligent spell discharge!

Overall, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood is an outrageously-excellent addition to the venerable movie studio and theme park. You could spend the entire day just wandering around and taking in the ambiance – not to mention taking turns on the rides. With the opening day being officially sold out on Universal Studios website, its success seems guaranteed – now we just need to find out when Diagon Alley will be constructed!

Wizard World Las Vegas Comic Con Wrap Up

Las Vegas is a strange town. Internationally famous people like Elton John or Bill Marr might spend months here and just about every music act at one point or another will pass through, but when it comes to celebrity conventions there is a big giant hole.  It may be due to the fact that the celebrities show up for non-celebrity conventions like CES or NAB, which aren’t always public. You find yourself standing and watching CEOs give presentations with one of the all time top scoring NBA players joking by your side or have a professional gamer who makes almost a million dollars sit down at their rig and take on retired special ops soldiers in a first person shooter match.  Finally, it looks as though we have some conventions moving in that will bridge the gap of cultural celebrities and comic celebrities and I think Wizard World Las Vegas is a terrific example of this.

On The Floor:

To start it off each year and to make sure that the press gets a few words with at least a couple of the celebrities before the real craziness begins, Wizard World Las Vegas started as they usually do, with four celebrities attending a press mixer.  This year two of the celebrities that struck particularly home with my wife and I were Barry Bostwick and Patricia Quinn, who played Brad and Magenta in the Rocky Horror Picture Show (which was our first date 24 years earlier, almost to the day).  When it came time to snap pictures with them Barry called my wife and I over saying “I like the look of this guy!”  Surreal is kind of an understatement on such a moment.  Cosplayer Jackie Craft was definitely making an impressive scene in her full suit of armor from  WoW though she was geeking out on seeing Victor Dandridge of Vantage:Inhouse Productions whose publishing work has inspired her for some time.  Personally I dressed up in green beads, eyeglasses and ties and ran around with Dandridge seeing who could seeing who could make the sillier St. Patty’s Day drunk face.  All in all a great way to start the weekend.

Once the show itself kicks off there are basically three things you have to decide between and sometimes more within them.  If you have done a decent size con before this is no surprise.  You have booths you can look through, panels you can see and autographs/photo ops to be had and how much cosplay you want to take in.  Each one of these will each a surprisingly fast amount of your time and you really almost need to research as much in advance what is going on to catch what is most important to you.  I spent only a few minutes the whole event at looking at booths, I brought help to take in cosplay and I did a photo op and then panels, panels, panels.

I am a proud Browncoat and a few years back at a Hollywood charity event Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk reached out to shake my hand on their way out of the event and the woman running the event screamed “NO!” and slapped my hand.  Stunned we all walked our separate ways but that had been my last chance to meet part of the Firefly crew.  So when I had a chance to meet the lovely Jewel Staite I ponied up the money, got my 5 seconds of happiness and have a lovely picture that everyone says has one of the biggest smiles they have ever seen on my face.

When it came to panels I saw a really long list of them but some of the highlights that if you have to pick from that you should choose are Michael Golden (Batman, Dr. Strange, The ,Nam), Women In Geekdom, Psychology Of (Insert Character), Jewel Staite, any WWE player, and the Cast Of SHIELD.  Above all however (maybe not Staite but that is personal) the person you have to see at the conference is Michael Rooker Vs. The Audience.  They just give him a microphone and he is off into the audience like a madman talking to everyone, answering all kinds of questions and the only way you can keep you eyes on him is if you pull The Exorcist maneuver and spin your head around.  I met him in an elevator last year and realized what a wild man he was then saw him at Wizard World last year and was amazed and this year it was no different.

The only complaint I could have about the whole conference was putting Jason Mewes up against Rooker in the same time slots.  I have had personal conversations with Mewes at other events in the past and he is quiet and very sensitive since cleaning up his act and having the energy being sucked out of his room by the Rooker panel made it so that a lot of people missed out on a really terrific guy.

I am so glad that Wizard World Las Vegas is established and growing and I look forward to next year’s already and if it passes through your town do yourself a favor and go regardless of your geekdoms there seems to be a bit for most.

Ashes of the Singularity Release Date

Plymouth, MI. – March 10, 2016Stardock has announced March 31, 2016 as the release date for its highly anticipated real-time strategy game, Ashes of the Singularity. Set in a future where humanity has expanded into the stars and is now in conflict for control of key planets in the galaxy, players wage planetary warfare on a massive scale to conquer opponents and control planets.

Ashes of the Singularity allows players to command their forces in a war that has spread across much of the galaxy in the 23rd century. Players have a choice of playing either the descendants of humanity, the Post-Human Coalition, or their bitter strong-AI enemy, the Substrate, as they fight for control over the galaxy’s most prized resource, Turinium.

“With Ashes of the Singularity, we want to present players with a game that lets them feel like they are fighting a planetary war, not just a battle,” said CEO and President of Stardock, Brad Wardell.

While the game includes a non-linear campaign, single player scenarios and skirmishes backed by the first multi-core RTS game AI, the game also supports ranked multiplayer with a lively community, custom matches with friends vs. AI or any combination thereof.

“We are not looking to reinvent the RTS,” said Wardell. “Our goal is to introduce a new generation of gamers to the general awesomeness of real time strategy gaming. That means showing how well non-cheating computer players can perform in single player as well as making it easy to get multiplayer games going.”

Key features of Ashes of the Singularity include:

  • Massive numbers of units in the world that can be easily organized into armies that allow players to fight wars across several different fronts simultaneously.
  • The world’s first multi-core real-time AI allowing for a non-cheating AI that can beat most players.
  • A story-driven, non-linear campaign that tells the story of a United Earth in the 23rd century.
  • A focus on single player replayability while including a wealth of multiplayer features.
  • The future-proofed Nitrous 3D engine whose 64-bit, multi-core foundation supports DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and multiple GPUs.

Ashes of the Singularity is currently available in Early Access on Steam or through Stardock. The full version with all of its intended features will be released on March 31, 2016.

First Screenshots from Action-RPG Vampyr

February 29, 2016 – Vampyr, the new RPG from acclaimed game-development studio Dontnod, today released its first screenshots. Set in the London of 1918, Vampyr promises to offer a unique, deeply immersive action role-playing experience steeped in vampire mythology, with a strong narrative.

The first screenshots of the game showcase the game’s world, as the Spanish flu laid waste to London’s once bustling population. Every character in the game has his or her own unique back-story and will affect the world. Be careful who you choose to hunt, as they will be gone forever, and their death will impact in a meaningful way the world that surrounds you. Feeding on human blood will not just keep you “alive”, it will also unlock new vampiric powers to use. As a Doctor, and a Vampyr who used to be human, you may also choose to heal your potential prey, crafting medicines from items collected in the game world.

There will be times when exploration and seduction will only get you so far, and you’ll need to resort to engaging in Vampyr’s dynamic, melee-focused real-time combat. It blends hard-hitting melee combat with supernatural vampire powers. Find and loot materials and components from the fresh corpses of your victims or during exploration, in order to craft and improve tools, melee and ranged weapons, as well as special ammunitions and coating to exploit the weaknesses of your enemies.

As you cling to what remains of your humanity, your decisions will ultimately shape the fate of your hero while searching for answers in the coughing, foggy aftermath of the Spanish Flu.

First images released for Action-RPG The Surge

February 29, 2016 – Deck13’s upcoming action-RPG today released its first screenshot, along with a render artwork of the main character.

Set on a dystopian Earth nearing the end of its life, The Surge offers a grim vision of our future. Accelerating advancements in technology and our abuse of the environment has led to an overly decadent civilization that now lies on the brink of collapse.

The Surge features innovative combat mechanics with a unique character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through the tight, visceral combat.

The images released today show The Surge’s hero, equipped with his exoskeleton which serves as a base to upgrade your equipment. When fighting enemies, you can target specific parts or limbs to recover specific pieces of armor, weapons, or equipment you want to attach to your own exoskeleton. Of course, the best parts will often be the hardest to cut off – and they’ll usually be attached to the most dangerous enemies! Even the most common enemies can prove deadly, and the game features imposing bosses who will truly put your wits, guts and reflexes to the test.

Be sure to stay tuned as we unveil more information about The Surge over the coming months.
