Halloween Horror Nights Maze Preview 2018

Getting the chance to take a behind-the-scenes maze tour at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights was always something that interested me. So I was over the moon when actually invited to attend one. I had the chance to take a walk-through of both the Stranger Things and Trick r Treat mazes while still under construction. So, I entered the studio through an employee-only gate and got carted down to the backlot. Now, we were only able to take photographs of certain parts of each maze, but I tried to get the best shots I could for you guys.

Trick r Treat

Located in the same spot as The Shining was last year, Trick r Treat sets out to recreate various scenes from the cult classic horror film. It accomplishes this in a similar style as The Shining did, using spartan, black hallways with chapter titles on the walls to introduce the scene guests are about to encounter. The maze goes through most of the big chapters of the film, and it should please fans of the movie. Guests who have not scene Trick r Treat may feel a bit lost – my advice to them is, naturally, SEE Trick r Treat! It is an amazing horror film that has become a yearly part of my Halloween tradition. One of the standout scenes we previewed was the school bus that was driven off the cliff and into the quarry. They have fabricated an entire school bus front end and the set dressing is amazing. They even have “Rhonda” there holding her lit Jack-o’-Lantern.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things is going to be outstanding. Not only does it represent the first time the studio has allowed a maze to be built inside a sound stage, but the production value and design going into it look top notch. This maze is housed in Stage 29, which was used by a large number of movies including To Kill A Mockingbird, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and even Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Its tall ceiling allows for very big sets to be built within and can definitely see plenty of room to accommodate a “Mind Flayer” hovering above guests should the maze return next year. This year, however, is all about season one of the hit Netflix show, and the maze takes you through all the locations of the season – from the woods to the Byers house and even Hawkins elementary school.

We had a great time getting the chance to see early looks at both of these mazes and can’t wait to check out the finished product later this week!

Star Trek Las Vegas Convention 2018 Photo Gallery

I cannot overstate how amazing the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention is every year, it is something I dream about going to every year and pinch myself every year that I make it.  It is hard to even express how it can reach you to your core if you are even a slight Star Trek fan and it is easy to understand how this show put on by Creation Entertainment is a mecha for all things Trek.  I was a fan before but now I am a fanatic with the Enterprise and “boldy go” tattooed on my arm.  I don’t think the show quite touched my core as deeply as it did after going to this show.

The first thing people generally ask if they haven’t been to the convention is “It’s just about Star Trek The Original Series right?” Nope, that couldn’t really be farther from the truth.  It is about everything you can possibly imagine Star Trek wise, just about every guest star who has ever graced any of the incarnations shows up to sign autographs, take pictures and do panels discussing their experiences on and off the set of the Star Trek show they were on.  Every anniversary of every one of the shows is celebrated with guest panels, podcast recordings and merchandise.  The merchandise goes from hats and shirts celebrating the different Treks to coffee tables and specially built Borg cube computers (oh I would be willing to get assimilated for one of those).  Ever wish you had Mal’s hand gun from Firefly or an autographed picture of Cindy from Land Of The Lost?  You can get those too.  Ever dreamed of meeting the best creature character actor of all time Doug Jones?  Stop by Discovery’s row of autographs and you will get to meet Doug Jones and the rest of the cast (though Doug Jones is one of the nicest guy’s in the business and I can’t steer you to meet him enought).

The convention items from the vendor’s room with it’s massive number of autographs and souvenirs is nice but it’s really the panels that make the convention.  They are going constantly during the show, in different rooms, all curated to be a great bunch of folks full of high energy.  Creation Entertainment does an thoroughly impressive job providing a panel interviewing extras from the first series in one, and interviewing the creators of a game like Star Trek Online in another discussing their Discovery content that will go until about the convvention’s time next year.  If neither of those catch your interest you can sit in on a panel about Star Trek’s influence on culture and technology as presented by one of curator’s of The Smithsonian.  This year there was even a panel comparing Shakespeare to Star Trek, particularly the roles of Kirk, Spock and Bones.

If you decide you want to take a break from sales and sessions you have the opportunity to go into different museums dedicated to costume and weapon designs from Discovery, the Terran Empire and even the bridge of the Enterprise with all it’s pretty lights flashing.  For those who were will to try out brave new worlds there was a Star Trek VR experience setup that allowed people to put on a headset and controllers and take a trip around a federation ship, looking around rooms, taking turbo lifts and even interacting with items (people were having fun figuring out what they could pick up and throw at each other).  It still needed a few kinks worked out (walking nausea which is fairly common in the build process) but for lots of folks who had never done it there was a lot of excitement.  Every day at the beginning of the day I took my program and went through marking what I wanted to see because it was easy to get distracted by something else and missing some event.

Being a lifetime player of Star Trek Online I got to geek out with the creative team at their booth and talk about a new playable character coming out with the new Age Of Discovery content.  They have so many missions and ships it is almost hard to keep up but I am already trying to figure out my gaming plans later this fall to allow for some serious trekkin’.

This year there were three big things in Trek news the first being Discovery and it’s content from a costume museum to video games.  CBS is working closely with it’s video, audio and even IDW  comic partners to make this new property that the fans have been nicely embracing already.  The Discovery cast was amazing and they showed up everywhere they could to promote the new property.

The next big deal was that it was already DS9’s 25th anniversary!  Time really does fly when you aren’t traveling at Warp Speed and I was surprised it had already been that long.  Lots of the cast members made appearances and talked about the old days on set and off of it and what it was like to be part of such a huge Star Trek universe.

The big deal of the weekend though was Patrick Stewart being snuck into the building and surprising everyone with the announcement that he would be reprising his role as Jean Luc Picard and his continuing life adventures after TNG.  There were little to no details other than that but it was enough to ignite the imaginations of everyone who heard that.

Creation Entertainment’s Star Trek Las Vegas is a dream come true for any Trekkie, hardcore or casual, it actually makes a lot of the casual become hardcore.  It is the final frontier for anyone who shares Gene Roddenberry’s dream.

2018 San Diego Comic-Con Photo Gallery

Another San Diego Comic-Con is in the books and, albeit somewhat later than we would have liked, here is our photo gallery from this year’s festivities in San Diego, CA!

2018 Midsummer Scream Post Mortem and Photo Gallery

Bring on the Halloween season: Midsummer Scream 2018 is officially in the history books! Midsummer Scream ran from July 28th to July 29th at the Long Beach Convention Center and got us all in the spirit of the scary season despite the 85 degree/85 percent humidity weather. We arrived on Saturday morning and fought for parking, then got into the convention center. We were once again impressed with the Long Beach Convention Center. It had ample AC – especially when considering the sheer number of people walking around, as well as a tasty little cafe area. Other Southern California convention centers could learn a thing or two from them.

Once we walked onto the exhibit floor, it was like being hit with a wave of Halloween joy. People walked up and down the aisles, browsing and shopping, and we saw vendors selling FX equipment, toys, handmade crafts, and more. The folks from the Mystic Museum even had a recreation of their highly-received “Slashback Video” video store on the show floor. Knott’s Scary Farm had a cool photo op available for attendees as well as a limited edition event pin, while Six Flags Fright Fest had a makeup demo setup. Monsters being made up from here were later seen in the Hall of Shadows, but more on that later. The exhibit floor also saw some celebrity signings, such as Cassandra Peterson (“Elvira”) and Kimberly J. Brown (“Marni” from Halloweentown) – each looking like they were having a blast talking with fans.

The Hall of Shadows, Midsummer Scream’s dark zone of mini-haunted experiences, has been greatly expanded. Not only were there a lot more mini-haunts in the area, but there were also specialized vendors (some selling glow in the dark props, masks, etc) and exhibitors. With all the haunters displaying their work in the Hall of the Shadows, it is hard to select our favorite, but we think that honor would go to Murder House Productions Trick ‘r Treat maze. Their attention to detail in recreating scenes of the movie was incredible. Also showing off their skills in the Hall of Shadows was the “Decayed Brigade”, a pro-sliding group made up of former and current scare actors. Six Flags Fright Fest brought a small haunted walk-through activation to the Hall of Shadows, complete with monsters and more all ready to scare attendees.

Midsummer Scream saw a number of panels and presentations, including those from the big haunted attractions in Southern California. Knott’s Scary Farm announced a new scare zone called the “Forsaken Lake”, while Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights unveiled a Trick ‘r Treat scare zone. Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor unveiled a revamped attraction this year with maze designs from Jon Cooke of Plague Productions. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour also unveiled a number of new mazes for its upcoming “Horror Made Here” event, including some based on “The Exorcist” and “IT”. In a wonderfully surprising turn, Midsummer Scream hosted a Hocus Pocus anniversary panel which saw actress Thora Birch talking about her experiences making the movie. The panel even had a trio of Sanderson sisters-look alikes performing, quite well, “I Put A Spell on You”.

This brings us to the only real problem facing Midsummer Scream: Parking. Unfortunately, the event parking was completely overloaded this year and it took quite a while to find a spot. Even then, we ended up parking a good distance away and having to leg it back to the convention center. I don’t know what can be done to solve this situation, but I hope it is something that can be addressed for next year.

Midsummer Scream has already announced its dates for next year and you can find it at the Long Beach Convention Center on August 3rd and August 4th, 2019. And, with that, we wish you a happy beginning to the scary season as we will start seeing more updates released from your favorite upcoming haunted attractions, preview events to report on, and a lot more. Happy Halloween! 🎃
