Vinegar Syndrome’s Dead Heat 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

Riggs and Murtaugh. Tango and Cash. Axel Foley and Judge Reinhold. There’s no shortage of classic duos in the buddy cop genre. Go far enough down that list and you’ll find Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo. That’s right, the star of the second through fourth sequels to The Substitute and Mr. Comic, the holodeck comedian that taught Data the true meaning of humor, once teamed up to bless us with Dead Heat, the best (only?) comedy-horror-zombie-cop movie of 1988. Once reserved for late night cable airings and bargain bin video stores, Dead Heat is now available in an all new 4k release courtesy of the mad minds at Vinegar Syndrome. Is this movie worth rising from the grave or should it turn in its badge and gun? Read on and find out.

Feature

As a series of smash and grabs target the jewelry stores of the greater Los Angeles area it’s up to detectives Roger Mortis and Doug Bigelow to do what they do best- rack up insurance claims for the city with unnecessary property damage, fire off as many one liners as they do bullets, and constantly remind their chief that he’s too old for this shit. Responding to the latest robbery they find that not only are they up against an organized crime ring, but a seemingly superhuman one to boot as the thieves take shot after shot without going down for anything short of a standard issue hand grenade. Investigating the robberies, Mortis and Bigelow find themselves at a mysterious pharmaceutical company where things go from bad to weird as Mortis finds himself killed and revived in the best sci-fi resurrection chamber the 80s had to offer. When they learn that Mortis has a 12-hour time limit on life they find themselves in a race against time to solve the strangest case of their careers. And I didn’t even mention the undead duck head!

There is so much that shouldn’t work about this movie. The plot- pharmaceutical company conspires with country coroner to test resurrection machine on criminals- is riddled with holes. The dialogue is paper thin with characters either dumping exposition directly in each other’s laps or delivering one liners so terrible Joe Piscopo should have left them behind at SNL. The lighting is flat and the film has the general vibe of a late-night made for basic cable movie of the week.

This movie shouldn’t work, but it does. Treat Williams’ earnest performance grounds the movie in a way that is hard to explain. The makeup and practical effects are absolutely fantastic with everything from a fully resurrected meat locker coming to life to attack our heroes to characters decomposing on screen as their zombie time runs out. And even though it’s full of plot holes the movie is a tight, easy watch owing in large parts to director Mark Goldblatt’s award-winning experience as an editor. On top of all that, Dead Heat features one of Vincent Price’s final performances, giving it an instant air of credibility and a place on your shelf with your other horror classics.

This is not a good movie by most definitions but for all its faults Dead Heat is an easy movie to love.

Picture and Audio

Dead Heat comes to us with a brand new 4K remaster with HDR10 encoding. The colors are rich with a consistent brightness leveled out with solid blacks. The color space is more vibrant than you’d expect a movie of its ilk to be with warm, natural skin tones across the board and beautiful pops of color in everything from the movie’s titles to the hand painted lightning effects in the resurrection sequences. The 4K upgrade is clean with little to no scratches or dirt remaining from the original negative. Details are clean with a notable call out to the excellent makeup effects. You should not be able to see veins as clearly as you do given that this is a 35 year old staple of video store bargain bins but this transfer is impeccable and looks as though it could have been shot yesterday.

The disc’s 2.0 stereo mix is solid. The sound is well balanced and individual elements in the mix are clear. Gunshots pop, electricity crackles, and dialogue never gets lost. The 2.0 mix did a great job of filling my viewing space and while that’s the only audio option it’s more than enough for a movie that was likely last viewed through a VHS player.

Extras and Packaging

Dead Heat comes packaged with a reversible sleeve featuring all new artwork as well as the original poster art from its first release. It’s also available in a limited run with a beautiful embossed sleeve as is the usual with new Vinegar Syndrome releases. The case holds two region free discs with the film and audio commentary on one 4K disc and the film, commentary, and the rest of the extras on a separate Blu-ray Disc.

On the disc you’ll find an archival commentary with director Mark Goldblatt, screenwriter Terry Black, and producers Michael Meltzer and David Helpern. Following that are numerous brand new interviews:

“The Building Blocks of Movies” with Director Mark Goldblatt
“A Thousand Feet of Lightning” with VFX artist Ernest Farino
“Seizing the Opportunity” with 2nd AD Patrick Read Johnson
“How to Edit for an Editor” with editor Harvey Rosenstock
“Happy Accidents Happen” with composer Ernest Troost
“Dead and Alive” with makeup artist Steve Johnson

The common element that jumps out to me most in the commentary and interviews is the amount of joy everyone involved had in making this film. On the commentary you get a real feel of camaraderie as Goldblatt and company have fun reuniting and reminiscing about the film and in the interviews you’ll find key players who still get excited to talk about the work they did on this underappreciated gem. These are all people who would continue to have impactful careers in Hollywood that happened to come together to produce a truly weird movie and you get a real sense of nostalgia as they share their stories. Add to these featurettes the standard archival trailers, still galleries, and deleted scenes and you have a comprehensive look at a video store gem.

Overall

Dead Heat is, in a word, bonkers. It’s the exact kind of 80’s schlock that Vinegar Syndrome excels at digging up and unleashing on the world. It’s the kind of film that was clearly fun to make by a group of people who cared in the right ways, didn’t care in the best ways, all adding up to a film that transcends “so bad its good” irony and becomes a really enjoyable time on your couch. Add to that an impeccable transfer and robust set of extras and it becomes a disc that is highly recommended.

BenQ EX3410R MOBIUZ Ultrawide Curved Gaming Monitor Review

BenQ has been making gaming displays and projectors for quite some time now and, recently, they announced their latest curved display – the “MOBIUZ” EX3410R. Featuring a 34-inch VA panel capable of 3440×1440 WQHD resolution and touting some gamer-focused features, I was excited to check it out for a review period.

Setup and Installation

Setting up the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R out of the box is a super simple affair. The product comes in three pieces: The monitor, the legs, and the support stand. The legs and support stand screw together without any tools (although I’d recommend using a screwdriver for extra tension) and then the stand just snaps into the back of the monitor. After that, it’s as easy as putting it on your desk and plugging it in to the AC adapter and console or computer. From a durability standpoint, the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R feels very well-built. There is a thickness to the monitor which promotes a feeling of quality and it weighs about 22 lbs all put together, so it’s very stable. BenQ was also nice enough to include both an HDMI as well as DisplayPort cable in the box, which is always appreciated. I hate it when I unbox a display or projector and have to provide my own cables (first world problems, I know).

Design & Features

As stated before, the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R ultrawide curved gaming monitor features 3440×1440 resolution at 144Hz and 1ms response time. It’s also a VESA Certified DisplayHDR 400 monitor, meaning that it meets the entry-level VESA certification for HDR. Some journalists and analysts think that this is not “true” HDR as the certification lacks the “local dimming” qualification (which, admittedly, is important for HDR). However, what this does show is that BenQ took the time to at least have it certified to the entry-level standard. A lot of companies won’t even do that – but they’ll still slap HDR on their marketing materials.

What BenQ also did was create a very intriguing AI system in their display. Called HDRi 1, this semi-intelligent system auto configures a lot of your HDR experience based on sensors embedded in the display and what preset you select. This actually adjusts the HDR effects based on what is being displayed. In my main game for this review, Dying Light 2, I was blown away by how much the GameHDRi mode enhanced the visuals of the game. That game, in particular, makes heavy use of lighting as a key gameplay element. Stepping from inside a building out into the sunlight is breathtaking… And sunrise is almost realistically bright if looking directly towards the Sun (I had to squint at first!).

The BenQ EX3410R is also designed to be a 1000R curved ultrawide display. This is a measure of the amount of curvature in the display. The amount of curvature for this gaming monitor is 1000mm edge to edge, and is what BenQ says is the curvature that “most closely matches human eyesight”2. I was used to a less curved, 35-inch display with the same resolution. The effect the 1000R curvature had was… startling… I didn’t think this would be that much of a draw for me but, in playing Dying Light 2, I was amazed at how the curvature added a slightly 3D effect to the game. Again, this is something that might not be for everyone – in fact, BenQ recommends displays with lesser curves for people who do precision work on their computers (CAD, 3D modelling, etc.). But, for us gamers, this is a really cool bonus – especially now when gaming 3D technologies (such as Nvidia 3D Vision) are long-dead.

Inside the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R, there are two 2W speakers and one 5W subwoofer unit – all by treVolo, makers of a really cool electrostatic Bluetooth speaker 3 system (also by BenQ). The result are some VERY serviceable speakers and there are even several EQ modes to cycle through in the on-screen menu system to further tweak how games and movies sound when routed through the monitor. Obviously, a dedicated multi-channel speaker system will provide better sound but, if you just don’t have the space or budget for a system like that, you will be very pleased with the onboard sound system.

Performance

During my time with the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R, I played a few games with it – primarily Dying Light 2 Stay Human. Setting the display to GameHDRi mode, I was blown away by how great it looked. Now, I am also running a fast machine with an RTX 3090 GPU in it, but the monitor itself performed wonderfully in bringing all that richness to life. I also played my favorite flight sim, DCS World, using the display and really appreciated the curvature in terms of increased immersion. That 3D effect I mentioned previously was very noticeable. Aside from gaming, I played several Blu-ray movies on my computer while it was connected to the display. The CinemaHDRi mode looked awesome and I was consistently impressed with its quality. The BenQ EX3410R is capable of not only being very bright but, also, very dark. They monitor features respectable contrast capabilities and that adds alot to the HDRi features previously mentioned. Also, aside from its brightness, the monitor features 110 pixels-per-inch, which is more than adequate to make out all the details without becoming grainy. The monitor does suffer from some backlight bleeding, but it’s not too much of a detraction to take away from the gamer experience.

What Could Be Better

So, while the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R display is outstanding, it is not perfect. There are a couple of things which I would love to see improved upon in whatever its next generation display might be. For one thing, while there is backlighting on the monitor in the way of four LED strips, you cannot set it to change based on the colors on the display. A lot of people, myself included, are purchasing external light kits with color sensors to expand the ambient colors on the screen onto the background walls of their game rooms/offices. Having this feature built into the display would be amazing. While the backlighting can’t do that specific feature, you can change the color based on the mode the monitor is in (game, cinema, etc), but it’s just a static color. For more dynamic backlighting, there is a spectrum cycling mode which looks nice, but is mode agnostic.

The second aspect of the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R that could be improved upon is its on-screen menu system. There are some confusing user interface quirks to get used to – such as some things just being grayed out and inaccessible. As I found out – most of the options of the system cannot be adjusted while in HDR mode (in HDR, you select between the HDRi presets) – and that is determined by the input source, NOT the monitor. Once I disabled HDR from the Windows display settings, I could then adjust things like brightness, etc. So, I found that I disabled HDR for doing productivity stuff (like writing this review) then re-enabled it for games, movies, etc. Thankfully, I found the included remote control to help a lot with the menu system. It makes navigation so much easier and I am glad BenQ included it!

Overall Thoughts

The new BenQ MOBIUZ EX3410R ultrawide curved gaming display retails for $629.99 and is available now. Its price point, while not cheap, is on par with other gaming monitors of the same general type and it definitely is worth its weight in terms of value and pro-gamer benefit. It features excellent build quality, good HDR performance, and a fast refresh rate making it an incredible PC or console gaming monitor.

Arrow Video Unveils March Releases Including An American Werewolf in London

This Spring, Arrow is proud to wow fans of cinema with two new titles making their Blu-ray debuts, while an old favorite returns with an all new 4K UHD release.

On March 15th, An American Werewolf in London bites its way into 4K. Directed by John Landis, this horror-comedy tells the story of two friends (David Naughton and Griffin Dunne) that are viciously attacked by a wolf-like creature while backpacking through England. One friend dies while the other suffers a much worse fate – he becomes a werewolf. Featuring a gnarly and bone-shattering transformation scene, An American Werewolf in London set the gold standard for which all other werewolf films strive to be with Film School Rejects calling “a quintessential horror text when it comes to both lycanthropy and practical effects.” This UHD release includes a brand new 4K restoration completed by Arrow Films from the original camera negative. Special features include documentaries, audio commentaries, interviews, and limited edition 60-page, perfect-bound book featuring new writing by Craig Ian Mann and Simon Ward, archival articles, and original reviews.

Come Drink With Me, one of the most significant martial arts films of all time, comes to Blu-ray on March 22. King Hu’s film about a group of bandits that kidnap the governor’s son and demand their imprisoned leader be set free in exchange helped to catapult martial arts films to the mainstream and launched Cheng Pei-pei as a star. The film is notable for its outlandish action sequences, many of which are choreographed to resemble dance. Hu went on record to state he chose Pei-pei as his female lead because of her background in ballet, noting that his stylized fights were “always keyed to the notion of dance.” This release marks the film’s Blu-ray debut.

Kaizo Hayashi’s acclaimed directorial debut, To Sleep So as to Dream, closes out the month of March with a Blu-ray release on March 22. When her daughter Bellflower (Moe Kamura) goes missing, an aging silent film actress (Fujiko Fukamizu) hires a private eye (Shiro Sano) and his bizarre assistant (Koji Otake) to track her down. This surreal fantasy is regarded as one of the most impressive works of cinema to come out of Japan in the 1980s. Referencing the country’s rich cinematic history and featuring cameos from a host of veteran talent, To Sleep So as to Dream is a must-see for fans of Japanese cinema. The Arrow Blu-ray release will be the film’s first home video release outside of Japan and features a brand-new restoration of the film supervised by Hayashi. Special features include a new audio commentary track, new interviews, and more. The first pressings of the release will include an illustrated collector’s booklet.

In addition to weapons wielded in both hands, characters can use the power of their Gideon Coffin to equip two more, allowing for combinations of up to four weapons at once. The capabilities of different equipment will also bring endless variation to the strategy that can be employed. The game’s visuals are achieved using a newly developed “brushwork style” to create a unique fantasy setting with a medieval oil painting aesthetic.

Featuring fluid co-op-combat, powerful weapons and a unique, striking art style, the epic world of BABYLON’S FALL can be played solo or in parties up to four**. Following the launch, BABYLON’S FALL will continue to be supported with new game modes, ongoing story content, and additional weapon types at no additional cost.
