Mutant Football League Kickstarter Underway

mutant-football

Chicago, IL – September 16, 2013 – An all-star team of talent has been assembled to breathe new life into one of the video game industry’s most beloved, and downright brutal, sports-hybrid genres. Michael Mendheim, the original creator and lead designer of Mutant League, is initiating a Kickstarter effort for a new video game entitled Mutant Football League™. With fan support, and a successful Kickstarter campaign, Mendheim is planning to release his Mutant Football League game on Xbox LIVE, as well as on iOS and Android tablets.

The original Mutant League video game was released in 1993 for the Sega Genesis. The combination of monsters, mayhem, and good ol’ American team sports turned the game into a cult classic.

“It’s the 20th anniversary of the original game, so this is an ideal time to release a new over-the-top football game featuring monsters and mutants for the many fans who have been clamoring for it,” stated Mendheim. “The fans have kept their interest in this genre alive over the years and we want to reward them for their loyalty. We will be creating a new and very different game that pays homage to classic monster sports games and parodies the owners, the coaches, the sponsors and everything else that makes football such a great American sport.”

An all-star team of art and writing talent culled from the gaming, comic book and animation industries have been assembled to form the Mutant Football League roster:

  • Michael Mendheim: Creator and lead designer of the original Mutant League series, writer of the hit Heavy Metal graphic novel, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse™.
  • Simon Bisley: Eisner Award winning artist (Lobo, ABC Warriors)
  • Dave Devries: Creator of The Monster Enginehttp://www.themonsterengine.com/ a popular children’s art book, lecture, demonstration and gallery exhibition that explores the premise of what a child’s drawing would look like if it were painted realistically.
  • Dave Elliott: Comic writing legend (A1, Weirding Willows, Heavy Metal)
  • Jay Lender: Writer and director of SpongeBob Squarepants and Phineas and Ferb
  • Micah Wright: Writer of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombies.
  • Robomodo Studios: Talent behind Tony Hawk series of games, Fight Night 3 and NBA Street.

Mutant Football League will be a great-playing action football game with deep strategy, bone-crunching hits, over-the-top gore, a graveyard full of tongue-through-cheek humor, and a mind-blowing roster of original customizable characters, environments, and gameplay features and options, including:

  • Mutants vs. Monsters – 30 vicious teams featuring  a variety of awesome, fully customizable Monster and Mutant characters including: Mutant Humans, The Undead, Battlebots, Orcs, and more!.
  • Maximum Carnage – Inflict devastating mayhem on the opposition with punching, kicking, bombs, clubs, axes and even chainsaws.
  • Killer Stadiums – The stadiums are filled with crazed and obnoxious weapon-wielding fans, and the fields are strewn with hazards, traps and debris. No field is the same, and all fields are deadly.
  • Dirty Trick Plays – These are mean, nasty, unfair and lowdown plays intended to hose the opposition, or if that doesn’t work, kill them.
  • Customizable Creatures – Create and name your own team and players, assign players a position, train them with skills and abilities, give them attack moves, add armor and weapons and let them loose!
  • Tongue-Through-Cheek Humor – A fun, entertaining and off-the-wall parody of the NFL, with all the excitement, hard-hitting action, lunacy, unspeakable greed, corporate ruthlessness, hypocrisy and over-the-top egos that professional sports has to offer.

Sightmark Ultra Shot Z Series Reflex Sight Review (Airsoft)

SM13005Z_main 1000x1000 (web)

Being prepared for a zombie apocalypse is always a good idea – even more so now that the Halloween season is bearing down on us. So, in order to do some “prepping” and also add to our growing airsoft article series, we got a loaner Sightmark® Ultra Shot Z series reflex sight to review!

The Sightmark® Ultra Shot Z series reflex sight features ultra-sturdy, aircraft-grade aluminum construction with an easy-to-use QD mounting system. The sight features a zombie-inspired, green “Z Series” logo on the top side of its lens frame. Mounting the sight to your rifle or pistol is easy as can be, thanks to its QD lever. Once on my airsoft rifle’s top rail, the sight was snug and secure – with no “play” that sometimes plagues sights of lesser quality. The sight runs off of one CR1632 battery that fits easily into the outer side of the rotary intensity dial.

Official Features

  • Precision Accuracy
  • Reliable and Durable
  • Wide Field of View
  • Green multi-reticle (4 patterns)
  • Quick detach mount
  • Side weaver mount

The sight rotary dial has 5 intensity levels and 4 reticle shapes. I did find the green reticle to be a bit too bright for indoor or nighttime use – even at its lowest intensity setting. For outdoor or daytime shooting, the brightness was a welcome feature as it helped provide a lot of contrast to the ambient light. While it could be said that zombie apocalypse survivors should avoid engaging the undead at night or indoors, it would have been nice to see a red dot option included in this sight, just in case the need arose.

I battle zeroed the Ultra Shot Z Series reflex sight out to about 75 feet – a decent range for a typical airsoft game at public airsoft fields. After several games, the sight still held its zero and I was able to put plastic downrange accurately. Also, this reflex sight is very easy to use with both eyes open, thanks to its roughly 1.3″ inch by 1″ inch window and unlimited eye relief. Additionally, I had several players come up and ask me about the sight due to its style and the inclusion of a rail on its right side for additional accessories.

As far as its durability is concerned – the Ultra Shot Z series reflex sight definitely has a solid structure. However, like with all sights being used for airsoft purposes, I highly recommend you pick up a BB shield device from your online airsoft store of choice. The last thing you want is your expensive site shot out by a random BB strike!

Overall, the Sightmark® Ultra Shot Z series reflex sight is a great choice for fighting off hordes of zombies – especially in bright or sunny conditions. It retails for about $144 dollars and is available on Sightmark’s® official website. I am awarding it 4 out of 5 stars – with its main drawback being a bit too much intensity and the lack of a ‘red’ mode for low-light conditions.

Razer Ouroboros Gaming Mouse Review (Peripherals)

razer-1343292547

Razer’s Ouroboros gaming mouse has been somewhat elusive – being listed on their site for quite a while without actually being available for purchase. It touts extreme form factor customization, wired or wireless play, and two new gaming “clutch triggers”. Does it live up to the hype? I decided to take the plunge and have been using one for about a week now – the verdict: Read on! 😉

Technical Specifications

  • Customizable ergonomics to fit all hand sizes and grip-styles
  • 8200dpi 4G laser sensor
  • Gaming-grade wireless technology with dock
  • Razer Synapse 2.0 enabled
  • 11 programmable Hyperesponse buttons
  • 1000Hz Ultrapolling / 1ms response time
  • Up to 200 inches per second / 50g acceleration
  • Approximate Size: 122 mm to 137 mm / 4.80″ to 5.39″ (Length) x 71 mm / 2.80″ (Width) x 42 mm / 1.65″ (Height)
  • Approximate Weight: 115 g / 0.25 lbs. (without battery) to 135 g / 0.29 lbs. (with battery)
  • Battery life: (Approx) 12 hrs (continuous gaming)

The Razer Ouroboros features a high-end, 8400 dpi 4G laser sensor and full Synapse 2.0 integration. The mouse also features 11 buttons with can be programmed as you desire and a decent heft, weighing about 0.3 lbs when in use. Its design is aggressive and futuristic – looking like some sort of advanced aircraft waiting to launch when docked in its cradle. The overall packaging of the Ouroboros takes inspiration from the Razer Mamba. It comes in a clear box that shows off the mouse as if it were an expensive gemstone or car in a showroom. I love this packaging scheme. Also like the Razer Mamba, the Ouroboros can run both wired and wireless to suit whatever your needs may be. The included cable is thick and braided, so it is almost guaranteed not to fray, no matter how many times it scratches down the edge of a desk or mouse tray. Unlike the Razer Mamba, the mouse and cradle feature some powerful magnets that make it VERY easy to dock without looking – a feature I wish would be included in all wireless mice with docking stations.

Customizing the fit and shape of the Ouroboros is very simple – which is nice as you don’t need hand tools for every little change. The Ouroboros includes four different side panels  – two thumb rests and two thumb grips. These side panels can be changed by simply sliding a toggle to unlock them from the mouse. You attach the ones you want (they are magnetic) and then re-slide the toggle to the “locked” position. The rear panel of the mouse, where one’s palm can rest, can be angled higher and lower, so no matter whether you are a “claw”, “palm”, or “finger-tip” gamer, you can use it with efficiency. This customization is altered by a built-in rotary dial on the bottom-rear of the Ouroboros. Finally, the length of the mouse can be altered to accommodate various hand sizes. Doing this does require a small screwdriver (one is included in the package) that is used to loosed two screws on the underside of the mouse. Once loosened, the back half of the mouse can be extended or retracted. There are three different, pre-set spots where the back half can be re-tightened down, and little hash marks to tell you when to stop so that when screwing the screw back in, you are actually hitting a thread-point. If you do not hit a thread point, the screw will not “bite” and it ends up bending the underside of the mouse in a weird way.

This actually is the biggest issue with the customization of the mouse. The problem is that the hash marks are not quite lined up with where the screw mount points actually are. Mine was about 2mm off – just enough that it was unable to screw into place. I worry this could cause damage to the mouse’s frame – but, once set, you shouldn’t have to change it very much as one’s hand doesn’t alter length often – unless you take some weird spill into a vat of toxic chemicals, mutagenic ooze, etc.

After getting the mouse fit to my hand, I thought it was very comfortable – especially for an ambidextrous design. Usually, I find “ambi-mice” to be a bit uncomfortable when compared to a mouse designed for a specific orientation. Thankfully, the Razer Ouroboros does not come up short in that department – although, I still think that Razer’s most comfortable ambi-mouse was the Boomslang with its most comfortable mouse overall is the Deathadder.

Using the Razer Ouroboros, I played everything from Battlefield 3 to Outlast and even Wizardry 8. The Ouroboros performed without issue and – especially in Battlefield 3, the clutch trigger worked very well. Speaking of the clutch trigger, these are two triggers built into the sides of the mouse. The user pushes in and hold the side panels to utilize the trigger and immediately change the mouse sensor’s dpi setting on-the-fly until released. An example of where this comes in handy can be most readily seen in FPS games like Battlefield and Call of Duty. When going in to use your rifle scope for a long-range shot, you press the clutch and it immediate drops the dpi to manageable levels – allowing you to make more precise movements and corrections. Once you pop your shot and take out your target, you can release the scope and the clutch to return to normal dpi. I did have some trouble using the clutch with the wrist rest side panels attached just because my thumb is on the larger side. Once again, this is an example of Razer taking risks to innovate the way PC gamers interface with their favorite titles.

Overall, the Razer Ouroboros earns a 5 out of 5 stars for its catering to the personal choice of the user and the mouse’s raw performance while gaming.

AirSplat LA Store Grand Opening Photoblog

airsplat-opening-1153

Today marked the grand opening of AirSplat’s LA County location. Located in Irwindale, CA the store features an array of airsoft guns and gear – including brands such as G&G, KWA, and KJW. At today’s celebration, we saw several vendors displaying their wares, including a very interesting approach to ‘skinning’ your airsoft (or real steel) gun from the folks at GunSkins.com using special vinyl wraps. Also worth mentioning was the showing from ASG with some very impressive Dan Wesson airsoft revolvers. Finally, the folks at Zan Headgear/Bobster had a great lineup of tactical face masks.

We would like to thank AirSplat for allowing us access to cover their store grand opening.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride Celebrates 5th Year

lahh-1

Los Angeles, CA – September 12, 2013  The fifth year anniversary of what has become a Hollywood Halloween icon, the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, will mark a brand new program that will take Hayriders through scenes of actual hauntings.  The month-long event will once again take place in Griffith Park’s Old Zoo area, which has been home to murder, torture, paranormal activity, serial killers, and abduction. The area surrounding the “Old Zoo” and “B Rock” has been called one of the most paranormally active sites in all of California. Now these and other actual events will come back to life this Los Angeles Haunted Hayride season.

Each year, the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride works to create brand new experiences for attendees. This year will be heavily focused on scenes of haunt and disturbia as the ride chronicles old news stories of serial killings, the trapped souls of the Griffith grounds that have been reported by witnesses for over a century, the legend and curse of Petranillia, tragic orphanage fires that took the lives of those whom still wander the grounds unaware of their demise, victims of psychopathic torture, religious cult sacrifice, witch trial hangings and so much more.

“This year will be very haunting,” said Melissa Carbone, Creator and Producer of Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. “We’re really going to capture the essence of the Halloween season by erecting an enchanting world of spirits, macabra, jack-o-lanterns and spine-chilling festivities.”

The “In-Between” Dark Maze, often referred to as the best in the state, will return as a pitch black labyrinth that thrill seekers may or may not escape. Not for the faint of heart, this attraction will send scare seekers into a sea of blackness with nothing but their hands in front of them and a low voltage lantern, that doesn’t help them see as much as it helps them be seen. The demons, maniacs, and creatures residing in these walls have grown unusually large and vicious.  But beware of “Doom” the master of these walls, for he is the most vicious of them all.

Lastly, “Purgatory,” is a sideshow to entertain guests while they wait.  NEW this year is the “Carving Shack” a sit down activity where guests can pick out a pumpkin and let their creativity fly, and “Death Row” an interactive room that allows guests an up close and personal look at devices of death used throughout history.  Returning will be psychics, games, the scary-go-round, house of mirrors, movies, music, magic and freak shows, demonic stilt walkers, photo scenes, and more – there is plenty of entertainment to keep busy and all activities in “Purgatory” are included in your ticket excluding food, gaming, & merchandise.

The terror starts on Friday, October 4th.  The Annual Premiere Night will take place on October 10th, which includes press, celebrities, and sponsors.  Past celebrity attendees include Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Jillian Michaels, Nikki Reed, Megan Fox, Sarah Hyland, Lucy Hale, Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, Stephanie Pratt, David Beckham, Emmy Rossum, Sarah Silverman, Ryan Gosling, Kristin Ritter, and Giles Nissan to name a few.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride will be open from Oct 4-Oct 31 (every Thursday-Sunday in addition to Wednesday, the 30th).  General Admission is $30, Double Attraction Passes are $39, and VIP passes that surpasses the line wait are $55.  $5 Off Discount coupons are available with your purchase of any Sunkist or Squirt soda product at all Southern California Ralph’s Supermarkets.   Your purchase supports the LA Parks Foundation, preserving parks for the people of Los Angeles. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!  Visit www.losangeleshauntedhayride.com for complete details.

Sponsors include Sunkist, Squirt, Long Beach Mini, and Ralph’s Supermarkets. Los Angeles Haunted Hayride is a Fur Free Attraction; there is plenty of blood and guts on the ride!
