Haunted Hollywood Sports 2013 Interview

HHSv2-100

Haunted Hollywood Sports has always been an interesting haunted event for me personally. Its uniqueness among “haunts” in Southern California cannot be denied – as it combines the worlds of airsoft and haunted houses together. This year, the event has returned for ten nights throughout October and we got the chance to ask Candice Catron, director and designer of the event, some questions about its 3rd year.

Q) How did you get into designing haunted attractions? Do you have a background in the haunt industry?

A) Getting to actually be a part of the production/fabrication of a Haunt from start to finish has always been a dream for me. I was lucky enough to be thrown into it out of the blue. I have been a part of the Haunt industry for a while. This marks my 8th Halloween season. I started off as a talent for one season then continued with special FX/character makeup.

Q) What were some of the challenges that Haunted Hollywood Sports faced this year?

A) Every event always has some sort of hold ups but we do our best to alleviate the situation as soon as possible so we are able to move forward. Our biggest challenge has been correcting the mistakes we made in the past along with applying the parts that did work at the same time and ensuring everything flows together.

Q) With Haunted Hollywood Sports being such a young haunted attraction, what kind of things are you guys doing to separate yourselves from the rest of the pack?

A) Our Kill Houses definitely separate us from the rest of the haunted attractions out there. We have such great talent backing us up inside those kill houses to really make the experience something unlike you have ever been through. It’s so interactive that you feel like you’re really at risk!

Q) When looking at designing these interactive experiences, such as the “killhouses”, how is the process different when compared to designing a more traditional walk-through haunted house?

A) Constructing a scenario for the guests to interact with and play a role is key. Also, all the fabrication of wardrobe is SO important. Each “kill suit” is made so the talent is safe and protected the entire time so they can have a good time and the guests still have the feeling they are shooting a Zombie.

Q) What kind of airsoft gear and guns will attendees who pay for the “killhouses” use for the experience?

A) G36 Assault Airsoft Rifles and Safety Goggles for the Voodoo Kill House. The Zombie Kill House will have guests using an M4-based, Assault Infra-red Rifle, M4-based Omega Assault Paintball Rifles, and Safety Goggles.

Q) How many monsters does the park employ for the course of the run?

A) For 2013 we have 150 Monsters taking part in scaring the pants off of our guests 🙂

Q) Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Haunted Hollywood Sports?

A) This year we learned from the past, improved our event and we are ready to welcome everyone into the park to come get scared and have a great time.

We would like to thank Candice for making this interview possible. Also, for ticket information and more, checkout Haunted Hollywood Sports official website.

Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood 2013 Review

universal-hhn-1539092113 copy

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to check out Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights event as well as the annual Eyegore Awards at Universal Studios’ Globe Theatre. The event was as genre star-studded as ever – including having “the chin” himself, Bruce Campbell in attendance! I have covered several Eyegore Awards and never has he shown up until now – it was a real treat. The Eyegores were hosted by McKenzie Westmore, host of SyFy’s FaceOff, and even saw Black Sabbath making an appearance. Other celebrities of note were Melissa Mcbride from AMC’s The Walking Dead as well as Corbin Bernsen, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell. Click here to jump down to our Eyegore Awards photo gallery or continue reading to find out how the night unfolded.

universal-hhn-426092113 copy

After exiting the award show, we entered the 2013 Halloween Horror Nights via “London Street” – an area where, a few years ago, the park installed theming from Shaun of the Dead (it was awesome). This year, however, it was home to Chucky, the killer doll. Definitely not as exciting of a theme, but the area had a lot of cool props to look at. Also at the event this year is a street zone using the thriller/horror film, The Purge, as its motif. Both street areas worked well for park-goers and there was a definite energy to the monsters. Perhaps it is better training by their talent captains or perhaps it was just the first night. Either way, they were doing very well at scaring guests and staying in character. The most creepy scare zone of the park had to go to the French killer clowns of “Cirque Du Klownz”. Clowns are scary enough – let alone French ones!

As a big fan of movies in general, I was looking forward to walking down “New York Street” in the Universal Studios backlot. It has been a filming location for an incalculable number of motion pictures. This year, both The Walking Dead : No Safe Haven and Black Sabbath: 13 3D haunted mazes were located in this backlot area. Unfortunately, guests were unable to walk down the main street of New York Street, having to settle instead for the backside of this location. Still, it was pretty cool, but not quite what I was hoping for.

universal-hhn-1406092113 copy

The Walking Dead: No Safe Haven, took guests through some of the events in the last season of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Some notable zombies made appearances – including the one that ate Lori. This maze’s outer prison facade was of excellent design and totally sold the experience from the outset. Once inside, it only continued to get better and the maze features the best automated prop scare I have ever had. Unless it happened to the group right ahead of you, you won’t see it coming and it was very effective.

Black Sabbath: 13 3D was the most expensive album advertisement I have ever seen. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me as a haunted house. The 3D effect, while entertaining, was simply not used as well as it has been in the past and, unfortunately, we saw at least two props from the SAW maze from a while back. Additionally, it looked as though some of the gimmicks and wall pieces were taken directly from their House of 1000 Corpses maze too. If true, this re-use is very out of character for the event, which prides itself on high production values every year.

universal-hhn-1484092113 copy

Insidious: Into the Further, did an excellent job of taking guests through the events and set pieces of the two Insidious films. The Insidious series is known for its highly theatrical style and in-your-face jump scares. The maze followed this perfectly. Our only complaint with it was that it seemed (and smelled) like they re-used some of the wall pieces from last year’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre maze. Also, there were a couple areas of the maze where it clearly looked as thought monsters were supposed to occupy it and simply were not doing so for whatever reason.

Evil Dead, like the Insidious maze, does a great job of letting guests live through the movie’s plot and has a couple of the most awesome, high pucker factor, gimmicks that I have ever seen. Think power tools and get ready to cringe. Another excellent part of this maze was how they handled the “Mia” character throughout. Sometimes, she would be actively scaring – other times, she was simply standing there, laughing creepily at guests while they walked past. This must be taxing for the actress playing her but, it is very effective at breaking up the flow of frights. Also, there are some water gags in this maze, so watch out for your delicate electronics.

universal-hhn-1349092113 copy

The Terror Tram once again took park-goers through the same route as last year which, depending on your point of view, is good or bad. I find it a tad repetitive. They once again use the chainsaw brigade at the first step in the off-tram tour. The problem is that the brigade members are dressed as the “tactical gear” zombies from third season of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Zombies don’t use chainsaws… Overall, I was disappointed with the terror tram – the best parts of the experience being that you get to walk right past the Bates Motel and house from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

The Universal Monsters Remix: Resurrection featuring the Music of Figure haunted house had the best climate control out of any we walked through as it is housed in the park’s year-round haunted house experience. The music was fun and kept a great tempo and the new takes on classic Universal monsters were a lot of fun.

universal-hhn-1356092113 copy

El Cucuy: The Boogeyman featured the voice talent of Danny Trejo (From Dusk ’till Dawn, Machete), and had some well-made, albeit disturbing imagery and props of dead children. This is not surprising, as El Cucuy is basically the Mexican legend of the boogeyman who abducts children. Taking it even further into the realm of shocking, El Cucuy has a habbit of dismembering the children, stuffing their insides with pumpkin guts, then baking them on high for 30 at 350, served with a nice Chianti. So the cooking and serving instructions may not be true, but the grizzly rest is. Overall, I dug that this maze tried its best, and succeeded, at being disturbing.

Overall, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights is an excellent haunted attraction guaranteed to both entertain and scare you. While some of the elements took our group out of the experience, the event features some really awesome high points to balance those low ones out. You can get ticket information and more at the Halloween Horror Nights official website. There are multiple tiers of ticketing – we recommend the more expensive, but very-much worth it, Front of the Line pass. While we were there, wait times ranged from 40 to 120 minutes – and having one of those passes really helps the night go smoothly.

G&G GK5C GL Airsoft Electric Gun Review (Airsoft)

GK5C-GL047

G&G’s GK5c GL airsoft electric gun is a replica of the Swedish AK 5C, their new carbine which has been dubbed by some as the “SCAR killer”.

An important thing to note is that this airsoft gun could be too heavy for some. In fact, it is very close to the weight of the real steel firearm. The actual AK 5C weighs 9.92lbs loaded while the weight of the GK5C GL is 9.01lbs while loaded! This is some very impressive attention to detail on the part of G&G. Another cool features of this AEG is the charging handle. Unlike most airsoft guns, where drawing back the charging handle feels like handling cheap tin, the GK5C GL’s charging handle actually feels somewhat “weighty”. Also, releasing the bolt provides a very satisfying clank which would make anyone using it smirk. Additionally, the GK5C features a large trigger and trigger guard, making the airsoft gun no problem to operate while wearing gloves. The fire selector switch is also ambidextrous, so both right and left-handed shooters should be able to reach it easily. Of course, the magazine release is on not ambidextrous, so left-handed shooters will need to account for this.

Much like the real AK 5C, the G&G airsoft version’s weight definitely rests more towards the barrel. While this can help a real firearm remain more stable while being operated, in airsoft it really doesn’t help anything except to fatigue the user. Also, the multi-position stock is able to fold away for more compact usage. Another fun fact about the GK5C’s stock is that it angles downward, which forces the bore of the gun to be more inline with the user’s line of sight. I love rifles that have this kind of ergonomic and find that it definitely helps my aim while wearing a face mask.

[/ezcol_1half_end]

G&G has included a 330 round hi-cap magazine in the box which features a “waffle” shape indicative of the real steel magazine. Also of note is that the battery compartment, located within the handguard, has a very easy-to-open latch making change batteries on the field no problem at all. Out of the box, our gun was shooting around 390fps with .20g BBs – perfect for most outdoor airsoft fields in Southern California. Additionally, the rifle is very accurate and we have to mention that G&G’s internals are mostly-upgraded on this gun – from the “Top Tech” G&G gearbox to its high torque, G&G long-axis motor. The gun exudes positive build quality and “tacticool” appeal.

Overall, we are awarding G&G’s GK5C GL airsoft electric gun a 5 out of 5 stars for its accurate reproduction of the real steel firearm as well as its rugged build quality, high performance, and accuracy.

5.11 Tactical Maverick Assaulter’s Belt Review (Airsoft)

belt-59569-s

The 5.11 Tactical’s Maverick Assaulter Belt has made some waves in the airsoft community, where a good TAC belt is hard to come by. Many low-end equipment-makers prey upon unsuspecting airsoft players with low prices and high promises. The airsoft player will use the gear a few times and find it already has tearing and wear marks. The Assaulter’s Belt from 5.11 Tactical, however, is the real deal – literally, as 5.11 Tactical makes actual duty gear. What this means for the airsoft player is that, while their prices are high, the quality is very good and able to take some serious punishment.

The 5.11 Tactical Maverick Assaulter’s Belt comes in two color flavors: Black and Sandstone, and in multiple sizes. One of the more unique features of this belt is its overall shape. If looked at from the side, the belt actually has a slight chamfer to it. This is to mold itself more naturally to the shape of the human hip. The end result is a very contoured and exact fit which sits on the user’s hips.

71szQkpBZEL._SL1200_

Its made from very strong nylon and features a hearty AustriAlpine “Cobra” buckle system. This buckle system is very reliable, and can only be unbuckled by pressing the two tabs. I got the chance to use the Maverick Assaulter’s Belt through several games over the course of two days of play in very rugged terrain. The belt’s Cobra buckle held tight and, thanks to the “fit and forget” strap system, never lost its sizing – unlike less expensive, BDU style belts that I have used and have to adjust throught the day as I move about. The biggest drawback I found in this belt was that it did not fit through some of the belt pads I have due to the shape and size of its buckle as well as loop. I had to force it through the 5.11 Tactical VTAC Brokos belt, MOLLE segment by MOLLE segment. Eventually, however, it did get through to the other end.

The nice thing about pairing the Maverick Assaulter’s Belt with the 5.11 Tactical VTAC Brokos belt is that they both have that 5.11 Tactical belt chamfer I mentioned earlier. This means that they wont bunch up strangely as their form follows each other’s basic shape. Additionally, I am excited to try this Assaulter’s Belt with the new HSGI Sure-grip Padded Belt that we have coming our way to review. My hypothesis is that the two products would compliment each other very well.

71JZmyNvt0L._SL1200_

Overall, I have found the 5.11 Tactical Maverick Assaulter’s Belt to be more than up to the task of getting me through long-engagement airsoft games in rugged terrain. The belt retails for about $90 dollars and is available now over at Evike’s website and other retailers. While more expensive than traditional BDU and pad belts, its durability and reliability makes up for the cost in spades.
