Featuring some of the best pixel art graphics ever seen, RIOT: Civil Unrest was born out of the real-life experiences of its artist and creator, Leonard Menchiari. During the summer of 2011 Leonard attended the NO-TAV protests in northern Italy. There he witnessed first-hand the actions of both the protestors and law enforcement officers which lead him to create RIOT: Civil Unrest. He created it to tell the stories and express the emotions felt during these clashes. What triggers the anger and aggression? Often outnumbered, what does a police officer endure during the conflict?

A complex strategy game, RIOT: Civil Unrest sets players objectives for each scenario. It’s then up to the individual to choose how to tackle each situation, employing different strategies and tactics in order to achieve the perfect outcome. Discover if you can you dispel an angry crowd or overcome a well-equipped militia with RIOT: Civil Unrest. Player performance is rated, aggression can lead to a quick, successful outcome but a softer approach may have the same resolution without damaging public opinion.

RIOT: Civil Unrest boasts impressive crowd behaviour. Each individual character has its own artificial intelligence that gives the overall crowd mass very realistic and fluid movement. The PC version also boasts a powerful editor that allows users to create and share their own scenarios. The editor comes complete with additional scenarios made by the Bologna-based development team, including: G20 – Hamburg, Gilets Jaunes – Paris, Shohada Square – Iran and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

RIOT: Civil Unrest will be available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in early February 2019.

OUTWARD Developer Diary #2

Walnut Creek, CA, January 21, 2019 — Publisher Deep Silver and developer Nine Dots have released a new Developer’s Diary video for their hardcore fantasy adventure OUTWARD. This video showcases the variety and depth of not only the game’s environment, but also the mechanics of an undervalued and iconic piece of gear: the backpack.

OUTWARD is a hardcore RPG that tempers fantasy elements with realism. The player must survive against natural dangers like hunger, disease, and the elements as well as monsters and brigands. This is where the backpack comes in; without the limitless inventory seen in other RPGs how will the player surpass the challenges that enemies and the environment present to them? The larger your backpack, the more prepared you can be. However, carrying too much encumbering equipment will leave you vulnerable in a surprise attack. Which pack you carry can be just as much a deciding factor as the weapon you bring into battle and your chosen fighting style.

Additionally, the player’s map-reading skills will be put to the test. Exploring the corners of Aurai with nothing but a backpack provides a thrilling experience that can be described as the peak of adventuring! You decide if you want to travel light or not, but you will have to make sure you are able to adapt to your environment. Aurai has four distinct regions that you will need to navigate with the help of your trusty compass, your map, and your ability to locate landmarks. The game will not do that for you. Not to worry, though. With preparation, you will be able to overcome most challenges that OUTWARD will throw at you.

OUTWARD is scheduled for release on PlayStation®4, Xbox One, and Steam on March 26th, 2019.

X4: Foundations Review

The X franchise has been developed by Egosoft since the beginning in 1999 right up until the latest edition X4: Foundations which you would think would wind up presenting a complete series of games just adding onto the previous ones universe.  It increases over the games in sector size (explorable and building sections of space) from 54 in the first game to a couple of hundred in X2: Terran Conflict which you think would wind up in massive size going through X3 and expansions… but that isn’t how X4 wound up. X4: Foundations has 47 sectors and systems within each sector that does add up to some considerable space but still seems like less than X2.  Of course, the space of a sandlot game isn’t as important as the quality of play in the game which if it all worked well would be plenty enough to keep you playing for a long, long time.  Besides the number of areas may be less but they might be bigger to balance it out.

The learning curve for this game is probably one of the highest I have seen since… well it may be the steepest ever which considering how many hundreds of games I have under my belt might be a quite a statement.  I spent a day learning the most basic of ropes of the game only to forget most of them the next day.  I had post it notes all around the screen and saved very regularly but it didn’t matter, when/if I figured out a command sometimes it would just fail so that I thought I had it wrong.  I would then go back through my notes again and try only to have it succeed despite doing it the same.  Another time the game’s hints mentioned using automated docking and when I went to do it it didn’t work.  Looking through tutorials, hints and online help I found that the problem was I needed a purchased upgraded drive.

When I was just trying to do the docking on my own giving up on the automated system I followed the nav comms instructions on how to put my ship on the deck but unfortunately right when I was supposed to land I fell THROUGH the landing deck resulting in my ship being stuck inside the station’s walls unable to get out.  I saw a good deal of the station, it was just from a ship cruising through the inside of the walls only to have it stop me when I would exit the walls.  This led to me having to quit the game and go to a previous save point.

Saving isn’t made easy, probably to keep you from using it a lot but it really plays into an important aspect of play, there are just enough bugs and things that you discover are unhealthy for your survival only right after it kills you.  It has a save and quit which is easy to miss or forget about.  I was guilty of getting into the gameplay and concentrating so hard on how to get around and do stuff that I don’t notice I have forgotten to save for a while.  I usually discover this after something goes wrong, like falling through the deck of a space station.

Don’t get me wrong the game is not bad, it just set out high hopes and there is nothing wrong with shooting for the moon but you want to have a solid comfort core to the game gameplay and game storyline to work up and out from.  Make sure that the players start having fun then start working into deeper controls and features from them so they can make choices in play.

The game has a storyline though the way it ended made me think that they plan a sequel to X4 soon to take us the rest of the way into the story.  There are places to get a little more story and history for the game but sometimes they require a bit of digging.  One nice place to look that surprised me off hand is the Steam cards you win for completing certain tasks.  Each time I go to play I read the cards over really quick to pick up information.  Exploration and questing gets you more information too if you pay close attention when some dialogue pops up.  The story ending still will probably feel abrupt but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are working on the sequel as they released this one.  I just wish they had worked out more of the bugs before this part came online.  Sure it is important to hit your release dates but generally with gamers it is better to release a cleaner game than an on time one.

Exploration is really the most fun part of this game, as is the case with just about every sandbox game.  You make and break alliances with those you run into, sometimes helping with repairs on a space station or helping that station survive an enemy attack, which will then turn that enemy against you.  If you get outnumbered you jump on super highways and pass through jump gates to get away.  It even has Orbital Accelerators to get you moving quick.  You can go out into what looks like empty space and just might be, or you might stumble upon a derelict ship floating in the outskirts of space just loaded with rewards.  Or you can talk to a space station and help them repair the air scrubbers or something like that.  You don’t have to attack every station you come across, actually that would kinda be a bad idea because you may find yourself hiding out by some derelict wreckage hoping you don’t get added to it.

Fighting is interesting and might scale to your play, I know my first fights seemed pretty easy and then got harder as I went, but that could just be like in a lot of games where the more trouble you cause the more attention of the enemy you garner.  Even in battle you have choices, you can kill a ship that knows it has lost and is trying to escape or you can take heed of their request “Please Let Me Live!” which might earn you favor with a particular empire, or get their attention even more.  And that is just talking about regular fights, when you start to take on a space station or a giant ship to pirate for cargo and the ship itself most times and you are getting into a whole new level of fighting.

Once you get a good feel for the controls, actually while you are on your way to it, you will find yourself addicted to the game more times than not, it appeals to fairly hardcore players due to the learning issues it has but those type of players are usually the kind who love the play once they figure it out.  I find it hard not to go back to the game right now, writing about it makes me want to give it a run but I don’t have enough hours to spend with it right now, refreshing the gameplay and then running around on mini-quests is fun but still requires some time put aside.

Like most flight games it is also playable through a game pad, flight stick or H.O.T.A.S. setup which would help submerge a player even more into the game.  I know the next time I get one of those to review this game will be at the top of my list to give run it through it’s paces.  This is the most submersive first person flight game I have, which is kind of funny since it is space flight instead of sky flight where you have to keep an eye out for the ground.  In X4: Foundations you just have to worry about other objects you might collide with.

X4: Foundations is a bit of a rough starter but once you get the hang of it it is one heck of a fun ride worth the effort.  It will probably appeal to the more hardcore gamer but that’s fine since that has really been its true audience since the beginning.

Project Winter Release Date and Gameplay Trailer

January 16, 2019 – Other Ocean Interactive confirmed its online-multiplayer game of teamwork and betrayal, Project Winter, will launch in Early Access, February 7, 2019. View the adventure of survival and deceit in Project Winter’s new gameplay trailer . Other Ocean Interactive’s development team will be hosting a one time open beta from February 1-3rd, 2019. Sign up is available at projectwinter.co.

Project Winter is an 8-person, multiplayer game focused on social deception and survival where players are randomly assigned to the role of Traitor or Survivor. Players must gather resources, repair structures, and brave the wilderness together – but beware of traitors within the group who will be steadily gaining strength as the match progresses and whose only goal is to stop the survivors by any (and often hilarious) means necessary. Communication and teamwork are essential to the survivors’ ultimate goal of escape.

Project Winter will release into early access on the Steam Store, Humble Bundle, and Greenman Gaming for Windows PC, with controller support for USD 19.99. The game was developed in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador with valued support from the Canada Media Fund.

Key Features

  • Survive & Escape in this 8-person multiplayer game of Teamwork & Betrayal.
  • Escape to Survive – As a survivor among a group of strangers, you will have to collect resources, battle the elements and complete a series of tasks to call in one of several rescue vehicles.
  • Hidden Roles – Among the group of survivors lurk hidden traitors. The traitors are known to each other but not the survivors. Their goal is to stop the survivors from escaping without being identified and killed.
  • Teamwork – Survivors cannot escape unless they work together. Players who wander off on their own will have difficulty surviving the elements, can fall victim to hostile wildlife, or become easy targets for the traitors.
  • Communication – There are several ways to communicate with other players, including proximity-based voice chat, private voice chat radio channels, text chat, and emotes – communication is vital if the survivors have any hope of completing their tasks and defending against the traitors.
  • Betrayal & Deception – The traitors are outnumbered and weak when the game begins, they may infiltrate the survivors and earn their trust while they build up their strength. Survivors can never be 100% sure of who to trust. The traitors can take advantage of this by spreading lies and setting the survivors against each other.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade Ep 2 Out Now

SAN FRANCISCO — January 15, 2019 — Today, Ubisoft announced that Shadow Heritage, the second episode in the first post-launch story arc for Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade, is now available across all available platforms.

In Shadow Heritage, a letter from Darius leads players to investigate a mystery through which the hero will come face to face with a new threat, The Tempest, a mastermind of naval battle who commands her own fleet. With her superior naval techniques and deadly weaponry, she will stop at nothing to ensure the hero’s demise.

Each episode of Legacy of the First Blade will feature a new ability for each branch of the skill tree: Hunter, Warrior and Assassin. The first episode, Hunted, introduced a new Assassin ability, and in Shadow Heritage players will discover a new Hunter ability, Rapid Fire. It will allow players to rapidly shoot arrows without having to reload with the firing speed increasing with each skill level and will be a valuable skill to all players, not only those with a Hunter playstyle.

To access Shadow Heritage, players must have completed Hunted, the first episode of Legacy of the First Blade, and the Naxos questline in Chapter 7 of the main story of the game, and must have reached character level 28 or above.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey post-launch plan is the biggest and most ambitious in the franchise, and the launch of Legacy of the First Blade is just the beginning for players who wish to progress further with new content in Ancient Greece. Season pass owners will access two major episodic storylines, Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis. Players can dive into new episodes as they premiere, or experience the epic adventures in their entirety once all episodes are available. The season pass also includes Assassin’s Creed® III Remastered and Assassin’s Creed® Liberation Remastered and will be released this March.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Season Pass, which includes the two story arcs Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis, can be purchased for $39.99. Legacy of the First Blade is also available separately for $24.99. The first episode, Hunted, and second episode, Shadow Heritage, are now downloadable for players who already own the season pass or Gold Edition. The third episode of Legacy of the First Blade will complete the story arc beginning of March.
