Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm Announcement Trailer

New York, NY – November 20, 2018– 2K and Firaxis Games announced today that Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI: Gathering Storm, the second expansion pack for the critically acclaimed and award-winning Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, will be available for Windows PC on February 14, 2019.

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm will introduce an active planet where geology and climatology present unique new challenges. Players will build new Engineering Projects, manage their cities’ Power and Consumable Resources and work with other world leaders in the World Congress to deal with the challenges presented by the dynamic forces of nature. This new expansion also extends the Technology and Civics trees with a future era and adds nine new leaders from eight new civilizations, a new Diplomatic Victory condition, a variety of new units, districts, wonders, buildings and more.

“As Sid Meier’s Civilization approaches its 27th anniversary, 2K is honored to unveil Civilization VI’s second robust expansion, inviting fans to explore and master the franchise’s rich and strategic gameplay in all-new ways with Civilization VI: Gathering Storm,” said Melissa Bell, SVP and Head of Global Marketing at 2K“Once again, the team at Firaxis has exceeded expectations to evolve Civilization’s features with the largest expansion ever developed for the series.”

“With Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm, players are now faced with a changing, active planet that places new challenges and opportunities in front of them,” added Ed Beach, Lead Designer at Firaxis Games. “Volcanoes, river floods, droughts and massive storms all await and are a part of our new Global Climate system that can cause ice sheets to melt and sea levels to rise based on players’ choices about how they want to interact with the environment.”

Key features for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm include:

  • ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS: Volcanoes, storms (blizzards, sand storms, tornados and hurricanes), climate change, floods and droughts will bring the world to life in a brand new way. Settlement choices are more important than ever for players as they balance high risks and high rewards;
  • POWER AND CONSUMABLE RESOURCES: Strategic resources play an additional role in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. These resources are now consumed in power plants to generate electricity for cities. Initially, players’ advanced buildings will be powered by burning carbon-based resources like Coal and Oil, but renewable energy sources also unlock as players progress to current-day technologies. The choices a player makes about resource usage will directly affect the world’s temperature and can cause melting ice caps and rising sea levels;
  • ENGINEERING PROJECTS: Players can now shape the world around their empires to overcome unfavorable land conditions by making improvements like canals, dams, tunnels and railroads. When settling cities, players will need to consider the flood risk to coastal lowland areas, but keep in mind that in the late-game, new technologies like Flood Barriers can be used to protect these tiles;
  • WORLD CONGRESS: For the first time in Civilization VI, players can make their voices heard among the other leaders of the world. Along the way, they can earn Diplomatic Favor through Alliances, influence city-states, compete in World Games and more. In addition, they can use Diplomatic Favor to extract promises from other leaders, vote on Resolutions, call a Special Session to address an emergency and increase the weight of votes in their quests to achieve the new Diplomatic Victory;
  • 21st CENTURY TECHNOLOGIES & CIVICS: A new era has been added to the Technology and Civics trees. As well, players will combat new environmental effects with speculative ideas, such as relocating their populations out to seasteads and developing technologies to recapture carbon emissions;
  • NEW LEADERS AND CIVS: Nine new leaders from eight new civilizations are introduced. Each brings unique bonuses and gameplay, as well as a total of nine unique units, four unique buildings, three unique improvements, two unique districts and one unique governor;
  • NEW SCENARIOS:
    • The Black Death: The Black Death ravaged Europe and western Asia in the mid-14th century, killing a greater share of the population than any other event in world history. The player’s task is to lead his or her nation through the calamity: keep the population alive, the economy strong and faith unshaken amidst a world of terror and desperation;
    • War Machine: At the outset of WWI, the German Imperial Army had a daring plan: invade neutral Belgium and then rush the French heartland before its leaders could mobilize to resist. When war was declared, both armies swung into motion and set up one of the most incredible and shocking military campaigns in world history. In this multiplayer scenario, players take the side of one of these two great powers at this same precipice. The clock is ticking, and the enemy is moving;
  • MORE NEW CONTENT: Civilization VI: Gathering Storm will introduce seven new world wonders, seven natural wonders, 18 new units, 15 new improvements, nine new buildings, five new districts, two new city sets, nine new techs and 10 new civics;
  • IMPROVED GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS: The Espionage system will be enhanced with new options. In addition, the Culture and Science Victories have been updated, new Historic Moments have been added and additional improvements have been made to other existing systems.

Developed by Firaxis Games, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and up by the ESRB and is available now for Windows PC and Nintendo Switch™. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is also available for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Linux from Aspyr Media. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm will be available on February 14, 2019 for Windows PC and coming shortly thereafter for Mac and Linux from Aspyr Media.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead – A Review (PC)

Overkill Software has been developing their Walking Dead game for more than four years, and it has finally been released on PC.  I, for one, was excited to finally get a zombie game from the makers of Payday that was set in the Walking Dead universe.  That excitement turned into a strong feeling of “meh” during the beta as I quickly discovered that the game wasn’t as fun as I had hoped.  That feeling of “meh” quickly turned to a hard “nope” when it was finally released with many of the  bugs still intact from the beta and for a full AAA release price of $59.99.  What happened?  Let’s dive into our review of Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

Story

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is set in Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead universe, but you won’t be playing as Rick Grimes or Michonne.  Instead,  you will play as one of four new characters in Washington, D.C.; Heather, Grant, Maya or Aiden.  You live in the Anderson Camp and will need to gather supplies to help better your camp, or you will need to defend your camp from attacks from zombies or humans from another camp.  The story progresses like it does in Payday, you have a home base and can select different missions to complete.  Each mission has a loose plot to go with it, like gather supplies from the human camp, but other then that don’t expect anything The Walking Dead level of character progression or development.  Since none of the characters from the show or the comic are in the game, at least currently, there isn’t much of a connection between this game and the later two storylines.  This game could have been just a standard zombie game, and the money for the license could have been spent making the game more fun.

While I do knock Overkill’s The Walking Dead around pretty rough for it’s story, it isn’t any more or less then what we got in Left 4 Dead and I enjoyed that game immensely.  What I think disappoints me the most is that this is a The Walking Dead game, and they only use that story as backdrop for this game.  A game set in the Star Wars universe can still feel like a Star Wars game even without the main cast of characters because the universe is so unique.  In a The Walking Dead game, it just feels like another zombie game, and we have tons of those.  This game needed a better storyline that connected with The Walking Dead much, much more.

Game Play

The game begins by allowing you to select one of four characters to take on a mission: Heather, Grant, Maya and Aiden.  Each character is outfitted with different weapons and takes on a different role.  Aiden, for instance, is the tank of the group and starts the game off with a silenced shotgun and silence pistol.  Aiden is great for soaking up damage or getting into the thick of things, but not so great when you need someone taken down from long range and quietly.  That’s where Grant comes in with his silenced sniper rifle.  Party composition matters in Overkill’s The Walking Dead, so make the right decision.

Each character comes with their own specific skill sets and what they can interact with as well, depending on what tool kit you have with you.  Weapons start off silenced, but as you use the guns to shoot enemies, the silencers will start to degrade then finally fail, leaving you with no other option but to go loud.  The issue with that is, of course, noise brings more zombies.  In the level I started testing the game on, we were infiltrating a human encampment and we were doing fine, but eventually all of our silenced weapons weren’t silenced anymore due to degradation and we started to alert more and more zombies.  Finally, we were completely overrun trying to reach our goal.

As you progress through the levels, you find materials that you can use to upgrade the Anderson camp and to unlock other skills or weapons.  The camp serves as a hub for all the other missions to center around.  The game tells you which one to start with, but you could just jump right into any of the unlocked missions you choose.  Overkill’s The Walking Dead is set up very similar to Overkill’s other game series, Payday.  If you are familiar with the basic structure of a Payday game, then you will feel right at home with Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

Ok, but is it fun to play?  Short answer is “maybe”. Overkill’s The Walking Dead can be a fun game.  However, there is no offline or solo play in Overkill’s The Walking Dead, at least officially.  You can start a mission solo, but you will be doing a job that was meant for 4 people.  This means you need 3 other people to play this game constantly, and if you don’t have 3 mates you trust, then you are putting your life in the hands of perfect strangers.  I am not a fan of online only games, I do love to have a solo option or at least the option to play with bots instead of real people.  If 3 of my friends bought this game and would play with me, then I would at least have someone I can rely on.  In some of the games I played during the preview, we would just have one person run ahead, aggro a ton of zombies and then disconnect.

The artificial intelligence in the game sucks, plain and simple.  We had humans just randomly shooting from across the map, and that was increasing the horde activity until we were finally overrun with no chance at all at winning.  Most missions also just had stupid things that you needed to complete before moving onto the next level, like collecting four gas cans to fill up the tank of a forklift to move it a foot and a half.  The horde mode missions are mind numbingly dull.  These are the worst, honestly, just shoot zombie, rebuild barrier, then repeat as needed.

Aesthetics

This is obviously where all the money for the game went, into making it look and sound good.  Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a good looking game.  The art direction and graphics look nice, and the game ran perfectly on my PC without any graphical issues or lag.  The characters are fully voiced in game, and the voice overs are also top notch.  The actors took the job seriously, and it shows.  It’s too bad that this just wasn’t enough to save the game from mediocrity.

Final Thoughts

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a game that suffered from developmental hell and was plague by mismanagement and misdirection.  What we got in the final product is not worth the $59.99 price tag, not by a long shot.  Boring missions, bad a.i., no The Walking Dead characters, and a storyline that does not connect to either the comic nor the tv show just isn’t worth my time nor my money.  There is a lot that is good here though, and that’s what really hurts.  The voice acting and art are top notch, the different skills and loadouts for the characters are interesting, and the reliance on cooperative game play can be fun with the right group.  While I was looking forward to Overkill’s The Walking Deadthe final product is pretty much D.O.A.  Overkill’s The Walking Dead is available now for PC.

About X Games
X games are space simulations played as action games from 1st person in a living breathing universe. TRADE FIGHT BUILD THINK is the common headline above all X games. That part may sound familiar to everybody who knows Elite (or any of its predecessors) or follows the development of Star Citizen. Where the X games are unique is in their depth when it comes to simulating an entire universe of NPC ships and stations including a realistic economy.

X games simulate a huge real “bottom up” universe. Hundreds of stations and thousands of ships, trade goods between each other. Prices change based on supply and demand. Resources are mined, refined into metals transported to higher level factories with workers that consume food and produce even higher level goods. All ultimately leading to tech products at the top.
EGOSOFT has been developing  the X game series for more than 20 years:

1999: X Beyond the Frontier
2001: X-Tension
2003: X2: The Threat
2005: X3: Reunion
2008: X3: Terran Conflict
2009: X3: Albion Prelude
2013: X Rebirth

Knott’s Merry Farm 2018 Review

The 2018 holiday season has returned and, with it, comes Knott’s Merry Farm – a transformation of Knott’s Berry Farm into a Christmas wonderland. This year, Knott’s Merry Farm features a variety of shows, attractions, and culinary delights that will please both young and old.

Stepping into Ghost Town, guests are immediately greeting by the Christmas Crafts Village, a collection of vendors lining the Old Western town’s streets. The vendors sell an array of wares, from soaps to signs to art prints and a whole lot more. The craft village is a great place to look for unexpected holiday gifts for your friends and loved ones. Near the far end of the Christmas Craft Village, you’ll run into Santa’s Christmas Cabin. This is a terrific place – a magical place – full of holiday treats like green apples smothered in REAL caramel – not just caramel sauce. Aside from the caramel apples, you can also get roasted nuts, hot chocolate, some adult beverages, and a whole lot more. Also at the cabin, you’ll be able to take a picture with the big man himself: Santa Clause!

The holiday treats are not just in Santa’s Christmas Cabin! You can also find special holiday bites at various food vendors around the park, so keep your eyes open. In addition to food, Knott’s Merry Farm is selling holiday themed items for the season – such as the mystery bags, fudge bites, or even the interactive Ghost Town lanterns, but more on that later!

Walking the streets of Ghost Town are the Calico Carolers, who deserve special mention for their singing and bell-ringing talents. They put on a great, mobile show all day long. Speaking of shows, this year Knott’s Merry Farm is chock full of them. The Calico Saloon Christmas Show is back, along with characters Cameo Kate and Dakota Dan, at the Calico Saloon. At the Bird Cage Theater, guests can enjoy two holiday stage plays from the Knott’s melodrama company: The Gift of the Magi and A Christmas Carol. Each of the shows are somewhat abbreviated, just short enough to keep the attention of the small ones and long enough to make for a restful stop for the older ones. In Campy Snoopy, family’s can enjoy A Peanuts Guide to Christmas. In this stage show, the Peanuts gang shares fun pieces of wisdom on surviving the holidays and a lot of humor as well.

Topping off the Knott’s Merry Farm holiday shows are its two flagships: “It’s The Merriest Christmas Show Ever, Charlie Brown” at the Calico Mine Stage and “Merry Christmas, Snoopy!” at the Charles M. Schulz Theatre. There are much higher budget productions and full of amazing visuals and holiday cheer. The ice show especially, where the skaters are allowed to put their athleticism on full display with amazing feats of skating.

Starting at 6:30PM, be sure to check out Calico Ghost Town “Snow and Glow” show. This short display takes place ever hour on the half throughout the evening and features some music and then faux-snow fall for families to play around in. It’s a lot of fun and also has an added element this year with the interactive Ghost Town lanterns being sold throughout the area. These lanterns cost $15 dollars each and provide a decent bit of yellow-orange light. What makes them interactive is that, during the Snow and Glow show, they turn on and off with the music. Does this short bit of interactivity warrant the price tag? That depends on how bad your children want it. They do make for nice keepsakes from the event, so it has that going for it. Personally, I would have liked to have seen them somehow interact with other lanterns when they get in close proximity. But, I digress….

Speaking of lights – a special mention must be given to the designers of the Merry Farm lighting scheme as well as the crew that sets it all up. The park looks absolutely stunning in its Christmastime makeover and it is an experience in and of itself just to walk around enjoying it all. Great job, gang!

Overall, Knott’s Merry Farm 2018 is a fun theme park makeover for the whole family with plenty of Christmas cheer to go around. Whether you take in the shows, the treats, or the decor, it will surely become a holiday family tradition for you and yours. Knott’s Merry Farm runs until January 6, 2019.

Over the course of its long service life it also became the US Navy’s premier precision ground-attack platform and lone airborne reconnaissance asset.

Frostpunk Endless Mode Out Now

November 19th, 2018 — 11 bit studios is proud to announce that Frostpunk’s most awaited expansion – Endless Mode – has released today on Steam, GOG.com, Humble Store, and more. As planned, and as promised in the development roadmap, the expansion is free for all owners of the base game.

In the time since it was announced, Endless Mode is the expansion we have seen the most feedback about on our forums, on Twitter, Facebook, and directly by email. In fact, while it was originally teased in the roadmap, the idea had taken hold within the community since the original launch of Frostpunk in April.

Forged over months at 11 bit studios, it now goes live and introduces two styles of endless play: ‘Serenity’ for the constructors who enjoy growing the city at their own pace without hard challenges, and ‘Endurance’ for survivalists looking to earn their stripes and see how long they’re able to live in the harsh cold world of Frostpunk. In both modes, new buildings are introduced to enrich the city’s architecture (including an Archives building that enables players to store lore and information in a single area), new sites can be discovered in the frostland, and new random events that may confront you with previously unknown challenges. Welcome to Endless Mode!
