39th Annual SHOT Show 2017 Begins

LAS VEGAS — The 39th Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade ShowSM (SHOT Show®) opened its doors this morning at the Sands Expo Center with industry expectations running high in response to the energized market in America for firearms, ammunition and accessories.

Over the next four days, the show will attract nearly 65,000 industry professionals from the firearms and outdoor industry, including 2,500 members of the outdoor press-the largest gathering of outdoor media in the world-and showcase new, innovative products used for target shooting, hunting, outdoor recreation and law enforcement purposes.

Owned and sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, the SHOT Show is the largest trade show of its kind in the world. The show is open to trade members only and not to the public; consumers will see the products unveiled at the SHOT Show on retailers’ shelves during the course of the year.

The 2017 SHOT Show opens following a year of extraordinary firearms sales-the strongest in history based on NSSF-adjusted background check statistics-and a surprise end to a tumultuous election season. Following those elections, the $6.7 billion industry is seeing purchases continue at a steady pace. Both industry professionals and consumers are optimistic about the future of firearms ownership and the shooting sports. Responding to this optimism, NSSF has added a number of new features to the show.

Kicking off what is now known as SHOT Week in Las Vegas was the 3rd Annual NSSF/HAVA Golf Classic, which took place Sunday at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear’s Best Country Club course in support of Honored American Veterans Afield, a firearms industry-run charitable organization that helps the healing of disabled combat veterans and their reintegration back into normal life through participation in hunting and shooting sports.

Monday’s pre-show schedule was jam-packed with events. First on tap was the new Supplier Showcase, featuring more than 260 OEM third-party suppliers on hand to network with exhibiting manufacturers and explore their needs for extrusions, fabrication, fabrics, machinery, metal, plastics, software, logistical support and tools.

Also new to Monday’s pre-show schedule was the much-anticipated Executive Management Seminar. Created to provide executive, senior level managers and rising managers information and insight on the latest management techniques and business practices, the sold-out crowd of more than 160 attendees heard from a top-notch lineup of speakers presenting on topics such as Voice of the Customer, multi-generation management and segment-specific marketing techniques.

Other pre-show events continued to build on their successes of years past. Industry Day at the Range took place on Monday with more than 200 exhibitors, a record number, providing a sneak-peek and hands-on experience to hundreds of firearms, ammunition, optics and vehicles to more than 1,600 invited outdoor media members and buyers. NSSF is the title sponsor of the event.

Finally, Monday was also the host day for NSSF’s annual SHOT Show University, the association’s premier educational resource for firearms retailers and range owners attending the show. Four learning tracks featuring multiple sessions allowed attendees from novice to veteran choose the courses that best suited their business needs. The event expanded its seating this year and sold out quickly, thanks to its extensive list of expert speakers and innovative topics.

New events and features weren’t relegated to the days before the show.

“The SHOT Show is our industry’s signature product showcase and media event that provides the first look at new products from iconic brands as well as new-to-the-market start-up ventures,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “We’re focused on helping to ensure their continued success and to provide an exceptional customer experience for attendees and exhibitors alike.”

More than 160 exhibitors brand new to the main show floor of the Sands are in attendance, as well as an additional 100 new exhibitors in the NEXT Pavilion. Retailers, range owners, law enforcement and military personnel have a bevy of Retailer Seminars and Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) sessions available throughout the week, while manufacturing exhibitors will have the chance to explore import and export opportunities with the SHOT Show’s growing number of international attendees enrolled in the International Buyer Program.

This is the fifth year NSSF is participating in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Buyer Program, which matches pre-screened foreign buyers with U.S. suppliers. This participation has been such a success that John E. Andersen, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Western Hemisphere for the U.S. Department of Commerce will be attending the 2017 SHOT Show. During his visit, he’ll be hosting a special luncheon and panel discussion on Wednesday, January 18, to help exhibitors connect with international trade opportunities.

“There is all sorts of good news for the firearms industry,” said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. “But we will always face challenges from those who wish take away our livelihood and our rights. We intend for this year’s SHOT Show to embrace the positive energy the elections have produced while preparing for the future and staying vigilant in our mission to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports.”

Even as Americans continue to purchase firearms in record numbers, Sanetti points out that fatal firearms accidents continued to decline, to less than 1 percent of all fatal accidents nationwide. The industry’s firearm safety education and free gun lock program, Project ChildSafe, and its “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” campaign will have high visibility at the show.

Tonight Sanetti will speak about industry challenges and opportunities at the annual State of the Industry Dinner. A sold-out crowd of more than 2,100 industry professionals is slated to attend this event, where in addition to the year-in-review presentation and several guest speakers, they’ll be entertained by Mike Rowe, host of the immensely popular television shows Dirty Jobs and Someone’s Gotta Do It, and CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, “a 501(c)(3) public charity that rewards people with a passion to get trained for skilled jobs that actually exist.”

For the eighth year in a row, the SHOT Show will take place at the Sands Expo Center. The show is the largest event hosted at the Sands Expo Center and attracts buyers from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, hosting more than 1,600 exhibiting companies across show floor space that exceeds 630,000 net square feet-equivalent to more than 13 acres. Some 12.5 miles of aisles lead to displays of a wide spectrum of products, including firearms, ammunition, gun safes, locks and cases, optics, shooting range equipment, targets, training and safety equipment, hunting accessories, law enforcement equipment, hearing and eye protection, tree stands, scents and lures, cutlery, GPS systems, holsters, apparel, leather goods, game calls and decoys.

Major sponsors of the 2017 SHOT Show include Ram Truck Brand, Daniel Defense, United States Concealed Carry Association, Aguila Ammunition, Brownells, GunBroker.com, SIG Sauer, Carhartt, Smith & Wesson, Vista Outdoor and Winchester Ammunition.

Viridian Announces New Gun Camera Units

Minneapolis, MN—January 16, 2017 — Viridian Weapon Technologies™ officially announced today at SHOT SHOW 2017 a revolutionary new product category that fills a crucial gap, not only within the firearms industry, but for society as a whole.  Introducing FACT™ weapon-mounted cameras for law enforcement, conceal and carry, and self-defense.

“No product introduction at SHOT SHOW 2017 is more relevant than FACT,” said Viridian® President and CEO Brian Hedeen. “FACT can reveal what really happened in situations when a firearm is involved.” Hedeen went on to say, “FACT is not a replacement for a body camera; but with it being uniquely positioned under the muzzle of a firearm, the high definition video and audio captured by a FACT camera may better tell the real story of what occurred. Who knows, the footage might even be powerful enough to stop a riot before it starts.”

FACT™ [Fast Access Camera Technology] is designed for law enforcement, private security and the legally armed citizen and incorporates Viridian’s proprietary INSTANT-ON® activation to ensure the HD video and audio capture automatically records every time the weapon is out of the holster.

Three different FACT models will be introduced in 2017.

  • FACT DUTY™
    • Law enforcement, duty-grade model with HD camera, forward facing audio plus 500 lumen taclight for full size firearms. ADMIN data evidence integrity built-in.
  • FACT COMPACT™
    • Universal rail mounted model with HD camera, forward facing audio plus 140 lumen taclight for compact firearms.
  • FACT MICRO™
    • Trigger guard mounted model with HD camera and forward facing audio for subcompact/pocket pistols.

A Look Back At CES 2017

Usually when I do a look back at CES it is a pretty lengthy read since it involves me running from place to place and taking everything in as fast as I can afraid I will miss something important.  This year was different because only a couple days into the conference I got a flu bug that had me down for the count and hallucinating for days.  As a result I like most other people who couldn’t make it had to rely of press releases and b-roll offering that I wasn’t even able to understand until it was old news.  So this year this will mostly be a large photo gallery with just a few mentions of things here and there.

Press Days And CES Unveiled:

This is usually when the big boys of technology pit press conference against press conference to try to provide the most interesting and sometimes flashy news.  This year to try to make this a little less competitive they split the press conferences into two days so it wasn’t one long rushing day followed by CES Unveiled.  The result was a little odd though because a lot of the big flashy boys were still scheduled against each other and the result of the split up meant two really long days with CES Unveiled at the end.  CES Unveiled is one of my favorite things about CES because it give you a little taste of some of the bigger companies and a large number of the smaller ones that are spread around the massive space of CES that you probably would have missed in the throng of crowds.  The whole Unveiled event is also held in a large room with gourmet food treat stations in the middle and bars full of free booze in every corner.  They even have ice carved to say “CES” that they run the alcohol through the top of and it is nicely cooled when it comes out the bottom.  As a result some people didn’t abide while others definitely abide WAY too much. Me, I got to try a new IPA for my Untapped, looked at a few booths for thinning hair (I need them), saw a computer, a bed, and a recliner massager all of which would definitely improve my quality of life and empty my bank account and a bunch of other stuff that I can proudly say I looked at having had too many snacks but not alcohol.  Honestly I don’t think I saw one thing I didn’t want to try out.

CES Convention Center:

This year CES was celebrating its 50th anniversary which is really quite incredible when you think of an entertainment based organization.  It’s saving grace is probably the breadth and width of the conference and it can’t hurt that it takes up pretty much every available foot of space in Las Vegas, 2.47 million net square feet actually.  It also has pretty much every imaginal use for an electronic from the way you wake up to how you get to sleep at night.  Trust me the how you get places is definitely covered as the automotive area expanded and the how you see places is very well shown by the massive growth of drones over the last few years.  Convention floors, hotel suites, even walkways were packed with people trying to show you how they are attempting to change the world.

During the day it is a mad rush to get from one meeting to another then at night if you are lucky and know the right people you might find yourself watching Sting well into the night.  Yes that Sting, I’m told.  Next year maybe I’ll get into it, next year.  Because you can bet there will be a next year of CES as long as the world has a way to power their devices.

ShowStoppers:

One event that isn’t designed to relax you into the night but instead helps you know a bunch of the little folks who may someday prove to be the trending giants is an event called ShowStoppers.  It is a great deal like CES Unveiled but there are less of the big boys present, in fact there are often big parties the same night and the exhibitors at this event often don’t even have a booth or suite space in that 2 and a half million feet of show.  For them they don’t get days to talk folks into their gadget, they have minutes as part of a few hour night.  We get to chat with old time friends like Alex Verrey who this year was working with some nice looking headsets called Lucid Sound instead of where he usually hangs his hat which is at Mad Catz who was showing less audio and other peripherals instead. Soul Sound was having a lot of fun around the place and one of the companies thanked me for suggesting their little robot would help teach kids in school how to get started in coding, they now have 100,000 of units helping children learn in our countries schools.  Previous years I had helped get word out about a project to get low cost solar lighting into third world countries.  I guess what I am trying to say is ShowStoppers is a place to watch and think of others because you never know if someone around the world may benefit from a suggest of how a product can actually help humanity.

Closing The Show (For Me):

During the Showstoppers I started to feel a little weak, I just thought it was the long hours.  I got to meet one of the PR people I have always wanted to meet because of her great announcements and her knowledge of who is moving and whom is shaking.  After meeting some cool PR people and getting to check out the awesome GameSir G3s game controller, I went to rest a bit and that rest got long then I realized I was full on sick with the flu and running a brutal fever.  Suddenly CES was over early for me with the last days where I get to kick it with a buddy named Keven and give a friend a copy of an old jewelry selling broadcast I used to work at still in my pocket.  I still feel cruddy but time waits for no man, I have sumo wrestling and cosplayers at a convention to see tomorrow.  And there is always CES 51.

SteelSeries Arctis 7 Wireless Headset Review

SteelSeries has a terrific line of headsets in their Arctis series. Designed for both gamers and music fans alike, the Arctis series features a ClearCast microphone, ski goggle style headband, and 40mm drivers. It also features a nice steel alloy structure which feels rugged and strong – not like some headsets out there that are flimsy to the touch. Setting up the SteelSeries Arctis 7 is very easy. Simply install the SteelSeries Engine 3 software package which controls the Arctis 7 (as well as SteelSeries other peripherals). The software is robust and allows for numerous customization options for sound quality.

One huge factor for long-term wear of a gaming headset is comfort. If you play a game for hours on end, it helps if your head doesn’t feel as though it’s going to collapse under the pressure of a pair of headsets. Thankfully, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 features a ski goggle style headband which is very comfortable while also helping the headset stay put. Directing your browser to SteelSeries website, you can find a variety of accessories for the Arctis 7. They sell both velour and leather ear cushions depending on your preference as well as a host of headbands with various patterns.

The SteelSeries Arctis 7 features some very nice audio quality, and allows for connection via a wireless USB dongle or 3.5 mm jacks. The microphone boom retracts and extends from the left ear cup and features a handy light on the end to help locate it. The ClearCast microphone does a great job of picking up the wearer’s voice while also not taking in a lot of background white noise. I got the chance to use the Arctis 7 while playing Battlefield 1, Skyrim Special Edition, and a host of other games – each time I was pleasantly surprised with my experience.

Moving to music, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 performs very well and, thanks to the SteelSeries Engine 3 software, you can tweak your equalizer as desired. The headphones provide a decent amount of bass while also not sacrificing sound quality when the volume increases. Its drivers have a 98 dB sensitivity and a frequency response of 20-20000 Hz, meaning that these are some powerful drivers. They chew up whatever you can throw at them and keep coming back for more. Kudos to SteelSeries for crafting such a powerful set of headphones that won’t break your bank account.

Overall, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 gaming headset is a terrific option for about $150 dollars. It features some great sound quality coupled with a good degree of comfort and, of course, wireless connectivity. If you need a wireless headset but are afraid of latency and sound quality issues, worry no more with the Arctis 7. You can find the SteelSeries Arctis 7 wireless headphones at numerous wireless retailers such as Amazon.com and SteelSeries official website.
