The Expanse Board Game Announced

HILLSIDE, NJ – February 16, 2017 – The upcoming board game The Expanse, based on the Syfy hit television series by the same name, will be released this June as announced by WizKids president Justin Ziran.

Geoff Engelstein, whose credits include the popular board games Space Cadets, Dragon and the Flagon and the upcoming Fog of War, designed the new game. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the authors of the best selling original book series published under the pen name James S. A. Corey, collaborated on the project.

The Expanse board game can be played with two to four players and focuses on politics, conquest and intrigue similar to the board game Twilight Struggle, although with a shorter play time. The card-driven game uses key images from the show along with action points and events that allow players to move and place “Fleets” and “Influence”.

Players represent Earth’s UN forces, the military of Mars, the rebels of the O.P.A. and the mysterious corporation Protogen Inc. Each player has special abilities that must be maneuvered to gain advantage. Players increase their control over the solar system using characters and events from the universe of The Expanse.

“We’re big fans of The Expanse series and are thrilled to be creating an exciting and strategic game set in this captivating universe,” states Ziran. “It is a welcome addition to our growing board game portfolio.”

Syfy’s series The Expanse is financed and produced by Alcon Television Group and recently returned for a highly anticipated second season earlier this February following its success amid the 18-49 age bracket. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) created the show that stars Thomas Jane (The Mist) and Shohreh Aghdashloo (X-Men: The Last Stand).

The board game will be available in stores this summer for $49.99 MSRP and includes a game board, Influence cubes, Fleet tokens, player mats, action cards, tech cards, misc. tokens and rules.

For Honor: Launch Trailer

SAN FRANCISCO — February 14, 2017 Today, Ubisoft announced that For Honor, a new action IP bringing together a trio of factions and their deadly warriors onto one battlefield, is now available worldwide for Xbox One, PlayStation®4 entertainment system and Windows PC. For Honor is rated M for Mature and is available for a suggested retail price of $59.99.

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with other Ubisoft studios*, For Honor offers an engaging campaign and thrilling multiplayer modes. Players embody warriors of the three Great Factions – the bold Knights, the brutal Vikings and the deadly Samurai – fighting to the death on intense and believable melee battlefields. The Art of Battle, the game’s innovative combat system that puts players in total control of their warriors, allows them to utilize the unique skills and combat style of each Hero to vanquish all enemies who stand in their way.

The launch of For Honor follows two highly successful beta periods that accumulated more than 6 million unique players and more than 2 billion minutes were played across current-gen consoles and PC. These were also the largest PC beta phases in Ubisoft’s history with 1,8M participants. Players participating in both the Open and Closed Beta experienced Faction War, the persistent cross-platform meta-game. The Knights Faction reigned victorious by the end of the Open Beta giving all players who pledged to the Knights the Emblems of Power with golden frames that can be used for customization. These in-game rewards, as well as additional beta rewards for all factions, will be available in the full game at launch.

For Honor’s meta-game, Faction War, the persistent cross-platform conflict between the Knights, Vikings and Samurai, will continue to drive player engagement post-launch. Players begin by pledging their sword to the faction of their choice. Every multiplayer battle in For Honor impacts the world as players earn War Assets based on their personal performance in matches. These War Assets can be deployed and spent helping players conquer and defend territories. Every match makes a difference, as all players contribute to the glory of their faction during each 10-week competitive multiplayer season. Once the season ends, all For Honor players will receive in-game rewards based on the rank of their faction. At the end of each season the Faction War resets and resumes after an off-season period.

Additional content including new Heroes, maps, modes and gear will also be released across three seasons following launch. Season Pass holders will receive an early access to some elements of this post-launch content.

My Memory of Us Teaser Trailer

February 14th, Bielsko-Biała, Poland — Children have their own way of thinking. Good, evil, and human relations – they have completely different perceptions of these subjects than adults. They also have something we, as grown-ups, are missing – a natural ability to focus on things that bring us together. This includes when brutal reality tries to test them. This is the story Juggler Games wants to tell in their new PC game My Memory of Us.

Do you like stories? If so, then I’ll tell you one. But it won’t be just any old story. It’s going to be different, because it’s about real people, about events that are touching and horrifying even now. Let’s go back in time. It all began with a meeting between a boy and a girl who came from two different worlds. For a short time they had good laughs together, deriving joy simply from the fact that they could be together. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. War broke out – the Evil King plundered the city and his robot-soldiers were everywhere. Citizens were separated and some of them were marked and forced to move out of their homes and live in a place that was sealed off from the rest of the city by a huge wall. Fortunately the children were not alone – they had each other. Their friendship allowed them to stay together, even though fate seemed to try to tear them apart. That’s the story behind My Memory of Us, a game dedicated those that were separated, but managed to find the strength to meet each other again.

“My Memory of Us is in fact a tribute to our loved ones. We wanted to tell their stories to the world, about their tough childhood experiences; about their nostalgia, their longing for real friendship, and about together opposing the great danger that is war. One day the Evil King simply changed all the rules. He segregated people – some were marked as better, others as worse. He created his own rules and harshly punished anyone who was brave enough to oppose him. Our protagonists don’t agree to this new way of things, to the terror of the tyrant and his army of robots. They decide to find their own paths in this gloomy, yet fascinating world,” said Jakub Jabłoński, Creative Director of My Memory of Us.

The creators don’t deny that much inspiration for the game comes from the events that took place during World War II in Poland. That’s why perceptive players will discover references to actual people and situations. But at the same time, the story told in the game could have happened in a different time and a different place.

What makes My Memory of Us stand out is that the story is told from the perspective of two friends who complete each other. Each of them has their own abilities, but only when they work together as a whole can they overcome all adversities. When they’re together, they’re not afraid of robots, prohibitions, and high walls.

“My Memory of Us is a unique production, and we – as a global publisher – are really excited to work with Juggler Games. At the same time, we feel huge responsibility. This is such an important game, it covers such important and meaningful topics – friendship, social exclusion, selflessness. We want it to gain a lot of interest from gamers around the world. The themes of this game are about feelings, which we very often forget in a medium such as games. The style and charm of My Memory of Us will definitely make this a great experience even for more demanding gamers,” said Łukasz Kubiak, co-founder of IMGN.PRO.

MY MEMORY OF US MAIN FEATURES:

  • a moving story about friendship and love in dangerous times
  • beautiful, sketch-like graphics inspired by naïve art
  • pair mechanics – taking control of two characters with different skills and abilities, or controlling them as a pair
  • a grotesque tale mixed with bittersweet humor
  • the events shown in the game are based on actual stories from the Jewish ghetto in German-occupied Poland during World War II
  • a dialogue system built around the language of symbolic pictures
  • various logical puzzles in 2.5D
  • a story that offers deeper meaning, set in historical realities

Conan Exiles – A Preview (PC)

In the early 1930’s, Robert E. Howard began publishing short stories about a massive Cimmerian barbarian and his quest to rule a kingdom.  At the time of Howard’s suicide in 1936, he had written 21 complete stories about this barbarian.  These stories faded in and out of publication for almost the next thirty years, never really grabbing the popular culture again, until 1982.  In 1982, a movie about this barbarian hit the big screens, starring an Austrian bodybuilder that was aiming for stardom as the next big action hero.  That bodybuilder is named Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the title character of this movie is named Conan.  Since that movie, Conan has had relative success in both movies and video games, but it wasn’t until Funcom released Age of Conan that Howard’s vision of Hyboria truly felt realized in the medium.  Currently, Funcom is working on their next Conan game named Conan Exiles.  The best way to describe Conan Exiles is that it is like Rust or Ark, but with balls.  And by balls, I mean actual testicles.  Yes, Funcom went the Full Monty with Conan Exiles.  Is it enough to make you want to play the game?  Let’s take a closer look with our preview.

Story

You begin Conan Exiles crucified.  Yes, actually crucified.  As in, strapped to a cross and left in the desert to rot and die.  The intro cinematic shows Conan wandering through the desert, as he comes upon you and your cross.  Conan cuts you down, defends you against some hungry monsters, then abandons you to your fate.  You next find yourself an exile, a criminal, left alone in the desert with nothing.  You must make your way to the relative safety of the valley in front of you and build your camp.  While in the valley, you will need to hunt for food, gather materials for structures and weapons, and defend yourself against everything that wants to kill you.

Let’s start this preview by saying that Conan Exiles is still in early access, so not all aspects of the game are polished, or even present.  Conan Exiles does a good job in setting up the narrative in the beginning of the game, by showing you your crime during the character creation process, and then by having you find journals as you make your way to the valley.  Once in the valley, the narrative begins to take a life of it’s own.  You will run into some characters that will talk to you, and let you in on more of the story.  Other than that, the story will progress by your own creation.  You make your own narrative, in a similar way as it is in Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, or Rust.  There are stones and journals that dot the wasteland that will fill in the gaps and inform you of the ancient civilization that once was here, but like most games of this nature, the story will change depending on your actions and you can create your own narrative.

Game Play

Let’s start with the naked, swinging genitals in the room, shall we?  Conan Exiles will get a lot of publicity over its approach to nudity.  You have the option at the start to go with no nudity, partial nudity (breasts), or full nudity (everything! and I mean everything!).  Character creation is very deep, allowing you to customize your race based on Howard’s world, and then begin to change all of your features using sliders.  Yes, there is a slider for penis length and breast size, you naughty person, you.  Part of the character creation process is also choosing your God.  You can select many of Howard’s pantheon of gods, including Crom, Yog, Set, and Mitra.  This selection will give you access to special structures and items that can only be crafted by a follower of that god.  You can view the game in first person or third person point of view, which alone will give you at least an hour of laughs watching your bits sway as you jump and run across the desert.

Once you get passed acting like a 13 year old boy, you will realize that Conan Exiles has much more to offer.  The main part of the game is truly survival, and that means keeping yourself fed, hydrated, protected, and healthy.  You gather materials as you travel across the land, and craft items that will help you live longer.  Tools, weapons, bedrolls, and even structures can all be crafted and placed in the world.  You will need to watch your encumbrance as well, so you cannot just grab everything in site and take it back to camp.  You will have to manage your pack and the weight of the pack.

Combat is fairly straight forward, but I found it incredibly difficult in the beginning.  Most everything will kill you in the beginning, so picking your fights will be very important.  As you level up and learn new recipes, gather better items, and even collect slaves, you will discover that these enemies will no longer prove a challenge and will need to find stronger enemies to fight.  Then there is the other players.  Depending on what server you are playing on, other players will also prove to be a hazard to you.  Many will kill you and nick all of your stuff, burn down your fortress, and make your life hell.  On the other hand, if you can get a few of your mates to band together, you can become the object of fear in the valley.

Conan Exiles feels right, though the difficulty curve is something that you will need to get used to.  I found the game fun and enjoyable, even in its early access state.  Lag was an issue on some of the servers that I joined, but here’s to hoping that gets hammered out before release.  What is here, is in good condition and was fun to play.

Aesthetics

Conan Exiles is a nice looking game, with full voice acting.  Many of the animations seemed off during my playthrough, including many enemies that just glided towards me, but hey it’s early access.  You definitely get the feeling of Conan here, from your character’s look, to the look of the enemies, and the structures you are able to build.  I love the way Funcom allows you to pick your character’s origin, which helps define your character.  Choices like Hyborian, Stygian, Kushite, and Zamorian are all offered in game, and will help determine the look of your character.

Graphics wise, Conan Exiles looks good and comparable to other similar games on the market.  The game had issues at distance, but again it’s not a release copy yet.  Structures look fairly generic, but will be completely up to you on how you design them.  I found it fairly easy to build a two story hut out of rock and wood.

Preliminary Thoughts

Conan Exiles is looking to be a very good, if not a great survival/crafting game.  The game has the look, the feel, and the blood of a Conan game, with all of the nudity that goes with it.  As of this writing, Conan Exiles has already sold about 300,000 copies and Funcom has completely recouped their cost for the game.  This is one game that I will be keeping a close eye on when it fully releases.  Funcom is also preparing an Xbox One version of the game, with a possible PS4 release later.  Conan Exiles is currently available on Steam Early Access.
