Kyn – A Review (PC)

kyn-screenshot-1

The duo over at Tengin Entertainment has released one of the most beautiful indie games I have ever seen in Kyn. Kyn is an strategic, action role playing game set in a fantasy Norse world. While the aesthetics are very impressive, especially for a game that was designed mainly by two people, Kyn does suffer from a mediocre story line and frustrating combat controls. These elements don’t ruin the game by any means, but Kyn ends up being fairly mediocre while you are playing it, then quickly forgotten once you are completed.

Story

In Kyn, you follow Bram and Alrik, two Norse warriors who have just completed a month long trail to become Magni Warriors. As the two warriors set out to return home to Vinborg, they discover that the landscape has changed. Once peaceful creatures and peoples have now become highly aggressive and red in color. What follows is a linear story line without much character progression, where our heroes travel the world and help the people survive the attacks of the “Reds” as these new creatures are now named.

Tengin Entertainment has taken an interesting look at the old Norse beliefs and stories. The issues with the story line come from the heroes being fairly generic and the story line not being anything amazing that we haven’t seen before. The story of Kyn serves it’s purpose in driving the narrative of the game, but that’s about it. You will move from one quest to another, killing monsters or rescuing guards, without much change in the story line. Some decisions you do make will have an impact on the world around you, but not enough to really contemplate or stress over that decision.

Game Play

Kyn is a strategic, action role playing game that centers around Bram and Alrik in the beginning, but as the game progresses you will gather a group of six adventurers to explore the world. While the aesthetics of the adventurers are as generic as they can be, the stats, skills, and gear can be changed at any time and throughout the game. You can change a character from two-handed dps specialization to a sword and board tank specialization with just a couple clicks of the mouse button. As items are dropped or crafted, you will be able to adjust your skills and stats to best utilize what you have in your inventory. I loved the flexibility of this system since it allowed me to best utilize the tons of loot that would drop.

Speaking of loot, Kyn has a very deep loot and crafting system that will take some time to get the hang of it. I did seem to get plenty of crafting materials just by completing basic quests, but it was difficult sometimes figuring out what materials I needed for a specific piece. Loot was very diverse and plentiful, which is a must in a game like this. It is reminiscent of the old Diablo II days, where everytime you kill something, you get that moment of anticipation for what will be dropped.

Combat, on the other hand, is fairly dull and lifeless. It’s mostly going to be “point, click, use skill, repeat” with only a slow time mechanic that really changes things up. The space bar will allow you to slow time for a small duration, while you figure out who needs to attack what. You will find that most of the time, your party will be attacking the wrong people and will need the slow time mechanic to fix that.

Kyn is also full of puzzles that need to be solved during the story line. The puzzles are very similar to what one would find in a typical Zelda game, with switches, pressure plates, or other similar devices. Some puzzles will require that you split your party up and have to manage two groups to get passed. None of the puzzles in Kyn where that overly difficult to solve, but they do kill the replay value, since once you finish the game you already know how to by pass these puzzles on a second run through.

kyn-screenshot-2

Aesthetic

Kyn is a beautiful game, especially for a two man indie team of developers. The level design is flawless, the world is beautiful and interesting, even though the characters themselves are somewhat generic in appearance and looks. Kyn is worth playing just for the run through it’s beautiful landscapes.

For sound design, the team went with no voice actors. All dialogue is text driven, which is a shame but understandable when it comes down to this not being a game with a huge budget. The music, however, is absolutely gorgeous. While it may not be as iconic as Halo or Kingdom Hearts, it is an absolutely joy to listen to as you venture through the world of Kyn.

Final Thoughts

Kyn is a solid game, that balances the good with the bad enough to make it enjoyable to play especially at the $20 price point. While Kyn may have a boring combat system and a rather weak story line, it does have a beautiful aesthetic, great level design, and a loot and crafting system that is deep and fun to play with. Kyn will keep you entertained for about fifteen hours, and that’s a lot of game play for a little money. If you are looking for a decent indie game to pass the last days of summer, than you can do far worse then Kyn. If you can’t overlook a few negatives and enjoy Kyn as a whole, then you may want to skip this one. Kyn is available now on Steam.

Onechanbara Z2: Chaos Review (PS4)

Onechanbara-Z2-Chaos-July-screens-8

When I was asked if I wanted to review Onechanbara Z2: Chaos, a game about scantily-clad women killing zombies, I was wondering if they had designed this game just for me and if our Editor-in-Chief really needed to ask if I wanted to play. That probably sounds sexist at face value but one of my favorite and most overlooked games of recent years when it comes to zombiefests is Lollipop Chainsaw. While its characters were wearing little costumes and wielding big weapons it didn’t take long to realize that it was a satire about female characters in video games and they made sure to back it up with nice graphics and great game mechanics. It was with these hopes of similar results that I went into Onechanbara Z2: Chaos.

Description:
Onechanbara Z2: Chaos is the latest iteration in the Onechanbara series featuring the world’s sexiest zombie slayers. With two sets of buxom vampire sisters at the player’s disposal, over a dozen stages of high-octane real-time swordplay await, each characterized by the hordes of zombies infesting the land and the over-the-top methods our heroes employ to kill them. Fight off the invasion in gruesome detail, sending limbs and blood flying every which way through a variety of physical attacks and acrobatic maneuvers, occasionally transforming into a demon for short bursts of added power and speed at the cost of life energy. Each of the four members of the so-called “bikini zombie squad” has her own unique abilities, and skillful play is rewarded with orbs that can be exchanged for upgraded weapons and outfits.

onechanbara-z2-chaos_1437375976

Features:
– Zombie-Slaying Action has Never Looked So Good! The bikini samurai squad of Onechanbara return armed with a plethora of new moves and new Dare Drive or Xtasy demonic transformations for short bursts of intense power.

– Four Lovely Ladies, Four Unique Playing Styles. Each of the playable ladies has her own unique weapons and abilities, and players may tag-team among them on the fly or even perform team combos.

– Tons of Customization and Replay Options. In addition to the series’ most involved storyline to date, Mission Mode provides specific challenges to complete, while skilled gameplay will unlock Yellow Orbs which can be exchanged for new gear and outfits to help earn a top spot in the online leaderboards.

– A Suave, Stylish Soundtrack Supported by Dual-Language Voice-Acting. In addition to the funkiest, catchiest and most outlandish soundtrack the franchise has ever known, players may also choose whether to enjoy the gameplay experience with the original Japanese voices or – for the first time in series history – a full English dub.

Onechanbara-Z2-Chaos-12-09-14-002

Hands On:
First things first, this game is satire from the way characters are dressed to the reason they are dressed that way. The characters are designed to be over-the-top just like the comvat moves and combos and, except when reading about the characters or watching cutscenes, their outfits and exaggerated body images play no part in the game to the point you forget about them until you unlock new costume parts through achievements. The amount of cool, weird, and campy clothing and accessories you can get is pretty staggering. You can even put Voltron style armor pieces on the characters to show just how silly they are trying to be and how little they are trying to reflect true standards and ideals (just like Lollipop Chainsaw where you got to dress her as Ash from the Evil Dead movies).

Now that the buxom elephant in the room has been addressed, the question comes up about gameplay. Is Onechanbara Z2: Chaos a solid game disguised as a sexy romp? Yes, thank goodness for that but the short answer is yes – it is a ton of campy fun. There are multiple combos that can be unlocked – both simply and more complex to pull off. The moves are very gratifying to perform and their action-packed results are equally awesome to watch. What’s even cooler is that the actual effects of your combat moves get more epic as your increase your experience. For example, you might do a dash attack that simply knocks an enemy down at the beginning part of the game. However, if you keep upgrading the dash attack you will find that when it strikes that the enemy doesn’t fall down but instead flies across the screen and splats on a wall slowly, giblets slowly sliding down its surface. You feel truly satisfied when you build up an attack and look forward to seeing what it will do next.

onechanbaraz2-chaos-Onechanbara-Z2_-Chaos_20150716233618

There are four characters that you play and are interchangeable at the touch of a button. This means you really have four life bars to work with at any given time and four styles of attacks. This can be crucial when you have enemies that might be more vulnerable to one kind of attack or even only vulnerable to one type (I’m looking at you bastard Mud Men!). So this brings in strategy as well as random mindless hack and slash. You may work on crowd control playing one character, switch to another to deal with specialty monsters then settle on your favorite type of character fighting style for a boss all in the same fight. This kind of planning and forethought that is required really elevates the game from a zombie chopfest to a solid, replayable fighter with lots of strategy. My only complaint about this specialization is that sometimes the timing on a combo has to be so absolutely precise to take an enemy out that it can take a REALLY long time to finally get it to work. A compliment about the controls though would have to be the use of the PS4 controller touchpad which I had quite honestly forgotten about. During some boss battles you are directed to swipe in different directions on the pad which gives a little extra tactile fun to playing (once I figured out it wanted me to use the touch pad instead of the directional sticks).

You can collect coins to buy potions, weapons, and movement upgrades as well as outfits throughout the game. Always keeping a near full health bar through health potions is an important key to survival. You don’t get enough money to unlock all you want, at least not of the first play through so you need to be selective, I found myself just upgrading the weapons on two of the characters, ones that had very different fighting styles so that I could adjust as needed during boss fights or large crowd control. Each character gets three weapons as well (melee, mid range, longer range) so upgrading all of them is that much more difficult. Once again though upgrades look satisfying as well as performing better.

If unlocking more items and getting more combos isn’t reason enough to replay the game, then there is also the fact that you get graded throughout each chapter and unlock achievements which are then compared on an online leader board as well as triggering PS4 achievements. Also, there are different levels of difficulty and challenges besides the main player campaign. This game has legs without even mentioning there are different environments set around the world and if you have favorites you can just replay them if you want.

Onechanbara-Z2

Last Thoughts:
Onechanbara Z2: Chaos is a great zombie fighting strategy game disguised as a sexist, mindless slash and hack. The dialogue and outfits are meant to be tongue-in-cheek while the action is solid, up-scaling and at times plain unforgiving. If you can get around half of the characters being dressed like lingerie models Onechanbara Z2: Chaos is everything a great fighting game should be.

World of Warcraft: Legion Expansion Announced

World of Warcraft: Legion Expansion screenshot

World of Warcraft: Legion Expansion header

COLOGNE, Germany—August 6, 2015—Doom comes for the Alliance and the Horde as a great burning shadow falls over Azeroth. During an event streamed live around the world from gamescom 2015, Blizzard Entertainment today unveiled World of Warcraft®: Legion™, the sixth expansion to its acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

In this dire new chapter of the Warcraft® saga, the demonic Burning Legion has returned, seeking to call forth their fallen leader—the dark titan Sargeras, Ravager of Worlds. As destruction rains across Azeroth, its heroes must seek salvation among the ruins of the Broken Isles, doomed center of ancient night elf civilization and birthplace of myths dating back to the world’s creation. In the face of hopeless odds, they must learn to master mighty Artifacts—legendary weapons that hold the potential to bring down the corrupted armies of the Legion—and strike an infernal pact with the dread Demon Hunters of the Illidari . . . accursed followers of the infamous Illidan the Betrayer.

World of Warcraft: Legion ushers in an era of unprecedented conflict for the Alliance and the Horde as the Burning Legion’s crusade against creation enters a terrifying new stage. The expansion is loaded with features and content that will transform players into Azeroth’s elite vanguard against the shadow, including:

  • New Hero Class: Demon Hunter—Unleash the demon within as an all-new melee hero class gifted with preternatural mobility—and the ability to metamorphose into hellish new forms.
  • New Feature: Artifact Weapons—Smite the Legion with legendary weapons of lore. Earn Artifact power to unlock abilities and traits, and customize your weapon to suit your needs.
  • New Continent: The Broken Isles—Discover the fate of a lost night elf civilization, confront twisted fragments of the Emerald Nightmare, and hunt agents of the Legion in all-new zones.
  • New Feature: Order Hall—Whether you’re paladin or warlock, unite fellow NPC members of your class’s order to carry out missions at your command.
  • New PvP Honor System—Fight for fame, glory, and a range of new PvP-specific powers as you face the opposing faction in Arenas and Battlegrounds.
  • Boost to Level 100—Come fully prepared to battle the Legion with a level-100 character boost, and fight alongside your friends in this epic new chapter of World of Warcraft.

“In World of Warcraft: Legion, the stakes for the Alliance and the Horde are higher than ever, so we’re putting some of Azeroth’s deadliest forces directly in players’ hands,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Whether they’re wreaking havoc as a Demon Hunter or unlocking awesome new abilities for their Artifact, players will develop their characters’ power in ways they never have before.”

World of Warcraft: Legion Expansion screenshot

Stalk Your Prey as a Demon Hunter

Dexterous and deadly, World of Warcraft: Legion’s new Demon Hunter hero class turns the twisted power of the Burning Legion against them. Drawing on fel forces to fuel their attacks, Demon Hunters pursue their prey with uncanny agility, dodging away from danger and closing on enemies in the blink of an eye. Demon Hunters sacrifice their natural vision for Spectral Sight—preternatural perception that allows them to detect targets that regular mortals could not normally see. Whether avatars of Havoc (damage-dealing) or Vengeance (tank), these melee-focused assassins unleash pent-up fury in the form of devastating attacks—even metamorphosing into terrifying demonic forms in moments of great need.

As a World of Warcraft hero class, Demon Hunters have honed their skills over millennia—and much like Wrath of the Lich King®’s Death Knight, Demon Hunters appropriately begin their journey prepared to battle the Legion at a higher level than most other World of Warcraft classes. Demon Hunters also have a unique starting experience that reflects their background and the terrible source of their power.

Wield Legendary Artifacts Against the Legion

To face the seemingly unstoppable might of the Legion, the heroes of Azeroth will need a legendary arsenal worthy of the task. World of Warcraft: Legion equips every champion with their own Artifact—a class-specific, highly customizable weapon forged in the fires of Warcraft mythology. Each character’s Artifact grows in power with its owner, and players can personalize their Artifact with perks, abilities, and appearance-altering characteristics that reflect the hero wielding it, transforming the Artifact into an instrument of order . . . or twisting it into an implement of devastation.

The Broken Isles and Beyond

World of Warcraft: Legion sends players on a forbidden journey to the ruins of the Broken Isles in search of the mythic Pillars of Creation—powerful titan relics said to have shaped Azeroth, and last hope for the world’s salvation. Once the magnificent seat of an ancient night elf civilization, the Broken Isles are now haunted by twisted elven aberrations, horrors from the Emerald Nightmare, and other grim remnants of legends long forgotten. Among the Isles, players will face the armies of the Legion and other dark forces across an array of all-new zones, dungeons, raids, and more on the way to the new level cap of 110.

With the Horde and the Alliance in disarray, players must seek out and bring together other like-minded champions to stand against the demonic hordes. In Legion, each player will take charge of an Order Hall—a site of great power linked closely to a character’s class and cause. The Order Hall will serve as each hero’s base of operations—and a bastion of hope—during their journey to the Broken Isles. COSTA MESA, Calif. – Aug. 5, 2015 – BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned digital lifestyle solutions provider and professional gaming monitor pioneer, today introduced the company’s all-new XR3501 curved gaming display. Designed to provide a more immersive gaming experience, the 35-inch panel brings gamers a dramatic 2,000R curvature — the highest of any LCD monitor — as well as a lightning-fast 144-Hz refresh rate, ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio, and BenQ’s RevolutionEyes™ technology — allowing gamers to experience enhanced visual comfort, a larger viewing area, and seamless peripheral views for a more authentic sense of engagement with today’s dynamic content.

“BenQ’s new XR3501 monitor is set to transform gaming into a faster, wider, and more engaging all-around experience,” said J.Y. Hu, Vice President, Business Line Management at BenQ America Corp. “Featuring a 2-meter curvature, a fast-action refresh rate, and a 2560×1080 resolution, the panel provides breathtaking visuals that surround users with edge-to-edge excitement. Players will experience their favorite games in an entirely new way while features such as Black eQualizer, RevolutionEyes technology, and PIP will definitely put them ahead of the pack.”

BenQ’s XR3501 monitor has been designed for casual gamers looking for a more enveloping gaming experience. With over 20 options for color vibrance, the VA panel provides higher color reproduction with better viewing angles, which proves vital when using such a large curved screen by adding an extra layer of color optimization. Users can also adjust color levels directly via OSD or DisplayPilot for complete color control. Using Black eQualizer, the panel brightens darker scenes within games without over-exposing white levels — giving gamers the advantage of seeing details more clearly than their competitors, while picture in picture allows multiple sources to be connected and viewed on the monitor.

With a focus on “Eye-Care” and visual comfort, the XR3501 is equipped with BenQ’s RevolutionEyes technology. Featuring ZeroFlicker™, the monitor eliminates flickering at all brightness levels, reducing visual strain to provide a more comfortable viewing experience. When combined with the device’s built-in Low Blue Light modes, the monitor also successfully filters the exposure of emitted blue spectrum light — effectively reducing eye fatigue and elevating gaming performance to provide exceptional visual comfort, even during long hours of gaming or dynamic content viewing.

BenQ’s curved XR3501 monitor is now shipping across North America at an MSRP of $999. Details on BenQ’s full line of gaming monitors can be found athttp://gaming.benq.com.
