ESL Announces World’s Largest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Event

esl-logo

(Cologne, Germany) February 20, 2015 The world’s largest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament will be held in Germany this year thanks to a partnership between LANXESS arena and ESL, the world’s largest esports company. Set to take place in Europe’s second largest multifunctional arena, usually home to ice hockey giants, “Kölner Haie”, the event will boast competition between sixteen of the world’s best First Person Shooter (FPS) teams in a 15,000-seater stadium on August 22nd and 23rd.

“We had the honour of hosting two US$250,000 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournaments last year as part of the ESL One esports tour, and this year we plan on stepping it up,” said Ulrich Schulze, Managing Director of Pro Gaming at ESL. “ESL One Cologne is going to be the largest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive event in the world. Taking place in the biggest indoor arena in Germany, we’re sure it’ll be a massive hit for fans from all over.”

ESL One Cologne marks ESL’s fourth US$250,000 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament in just over two years. While previous ESL One events featured a community funded prize pool, the Cologne prize money is to be provided by ESL directly. Ulrich Schulze noted that this was proof of the company’s dedication to the game’s esports development, saying that 2015 would see the company do even more with the game than ever before.

“We’re very excited to be the first German arena to host an event of this kind and are convinced that Cologne, as both a tourist destination and as a technology capital, is perfectly suited,” said Stefan Löcher, CEO of ARENA Management GmbH. “In co-operation with our partner, ESL, we’re looking forward to host some of the world’s best esports players and their fans come August 2015.”

Sixteen teams will make their way to Cologne this August to battle it out for US$250,000 in prize money. Information on tournament structure and the qualification process will be released at a later date.

Ticket sales for ESL One Cologne in the LANXESS arena (August 22nd and 23rd) begin on February 23rd. Tickets will be available on Eventim and all associated ticketing agencies in Germany.

Creative Labs Sound Blaster X7 Review

pdt_22189.png copy

To say that the Sound Blaster X7 is Creative Labs’ flagship external audio solution is a bit of an understatement. Creative Labs has managed to fit a 127dB Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) as well as the company’s multi-core,  SB-Axx1 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) within its strange, prismatic form factor. Speaking to its design, the Sound Blaster X7 actually reminds me of some high-end audio device I might have expected to see in the re-booted Battlestar Galactica TV series, but I digress… And, I am a Geek, so say we all!

Creative Labs has gone above and beyond in making sure that there are plenty of input and output ports on the Sound Blaster X7. Along the front of the device, you will find both large and small headphone ports as well as a microphone port. Also on the front side of the X7 resides a volume control knob, power/Bluetooth button, Dolby Digital, and SBX buttons. The front side of the X7 also houses an internal microphone – very handy for making Skype calls. The back-facing side of the Sound Blaster X7 goes even further with port selection, with not only Micro-USB and Digital audio ports but, also, a selection of line in and outs. For those of you wondering just what kind of speaker systems the X7 will interface with, you can connect up to a 5.1 channel surround sound system to it (it will not support 7.1 channels or above).

If wired connections are just “not your thing” or, perhaps, you simply don’t like desktop clutter, then you will be happy to note that the Sound Blaster X7 supports connections of up to two Bluetooth devices and one NFC enabled device. I should note that I was unable to test out the NFC connection as my iPhone 6 still doesn’t have this ability (really, Apple?). Speaking of Apple, however, I have to wonder why Creative Labs didn’t build in support for Apple’s AirPlay technology to go with the rest of its wireless capabilities. That seems like it would be a huge boon to those gamers using Apple TV as their primary source of TV-based content. Then again, this does raise the point of who the Sound Blaster X7 is really designed for, but more on that later. I also would have hoped that the Sound Blaster X7 would accept an HDMI input and support the decoding of Blu-ray soundtracks that use audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD.

pdt_22189.3.png copy

The included software suite allows you to tweak the sound coming from the Sound Blaster X7 to your liking. Back are Creative Labs favorites like CrystalVoice, Crystalizer, and Scout Mode all do a great job of enhancing your PC gaming audio. The Crystalizer has always impressed me with how it handled music and Scout Mode is a great way to boost important in-game noises like enemy footsteps.

For those of you interested in hooking your headphones up to the Sound Blaster X7, the device comes with an attachable headphone rest. It is a nice touch that merges overall aesthetics with function.  Additionally, the internal 600Ω headphone amplifier is powerful enough to let you listen to your audio with TWO pairs of headphones at the same time – perfect for sharing a movie with a special friend if noise is a factor or simply accommodating our future, four-eared alien overlords. Either way, it’s a pretty cool experience. Keep in mind that you will not want to amplify the audio going to a cheap pair of headphones – in fact, most headphones below true studio-grade will practically explode if you do. Just kidding on the exploding part, but you could damage their little drivers.

Unfortunately, the choice of speakers you use with the X7 will greatly determine your level of satisfaction. More to this point, plugging in a set of cheap quality, 2.1 channel speakers that I had laying around yielded sub-par results and, if that’s all you have, then I would not recommend you shell out your hard-earned cash for the Sound Blaster X7. Again, the argument could be made that if you are the type of person who has the cash to spend on the Sound Blaster X7, you probably have the cash to spend on a quality speaker system or studio-grade headphones. Thankfully, I am fortunate enough to have purchased a pair of Sennheiser’s PC 350 Special Edition headphones after having reviewed them a couple of years ago. Enjoying the Sound Blaster X7 while using them is a whole world difference of an experience. High quality audio files were beautiful to behold and my PC gaming has never sounded quite as good.

pdt_22189.5.png copy

Overall, the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X7 is a remarkable audio device with a whole lot of features and capabilities. At roughly $400 dollars, however, you will need to seriously crave awesome sound quality and possess, or plan to buy, a high-end speaker system or set of headphones to get your money’s worth. If this describes your situation – you are in for an audio treat! If not, you won’t be disappointed with one of Creative Labs’ more cost effective products like the internal Sound Blaster Z sound card. At $150 dollars, The Sound Blaster Z is a great audio solution for the budget-minded gamer.

**Update – We forgot to mention the fact that the Sound Blaster X7 features a panel on its underside that, when removed, allows access to the modular amplifier chips. I am no audiophile, so I wouldn’t know where to get new ones at but, apparently, you can replace these with your own amplifier chips for more customized sound.

The Charnel House Trilogy Teaser Trailer

charnel-house

February 19, 2015 — Indie game developer Owl Cave and publishing studio Mastertronic are pleased to announce special edition point-and-click adventure game series, The Charnel House Trilogy, coming soon to PC through Steam.

Experience critically-acclaimed horror short Sepulchre as you never have before, framed within two brand-new eerie interactive adventure tales, and get entwined in its absorbing narrative layers. Unravel The Charnel House Trilogy, consisting of Sepulchre and two additional games, prequel Inhale and sequel Exhale, building upon the original story with startling twists and turns and intriguing new characters.

Sepulchre casts you in the role of Dr Harold Lang as you navigate his fateful journey into the unknown. Piece together Dr Lang’s memory and steer him through turmoil and train-based unease, as you meet some very strange characters along the way. Find out how they are connected in this unsettling take on trains, historians and huge bags.

Become embroiled in the events of Inhale, the tale preceding Sepulchre. Meet young Alex Davenport as she waits impatiently for an urgent delivery. A delivery that will change her life. Haunted by snatches of a past she can barely face, Alex longs to escape her room, her apartment, her life. And yet unseen forces seem to conspire against her. Discover the part she plays on the ominous train journey.

Exhale is the final part in this chilling chapter of the Augur Peak saga. After her brush with tragedy, Alex wakes up in a familiar location. Join her in her desperate search to find the doctor she met and travel to the mysterious island of Augur Peak. Can she survive the journey? Why does she want to escape? And what is the dark and terrible secret from her past that doesn’t seem to want to stay hidden?

Co-developed by Ashton Raze, Ivan Ulyanov and Lewis Denby, written by Ashton Raze, drawn by Ivan Ulyanov and Ben Chandler and featuring the vocal talent of NYT bestselling author Madeleine Roux, media personality Jim Sterling, Wadjet Eye artist Ben Chandler and special guest star Ashly Burch amongst many others, The Charnel House Trilogy pushes the boundary for interactive storytelling and interactive horror.

The earth will crawl. The birds will flock. The island will rise. Be ready.

Ashton Raze says: Sepulchre has always been part of a wider story I wanted to tell. A number of my fiction works (interactive and non-interactive) take place in the same universe, so when Sepulchre was granted a Steam release, it seemed the perfect time to expand on the story I’ve always wanted to tell surrounding Old Gloria, and that fateful train journey as seen in the original game. Inhale, a very deeply personal story to me, existed in largely the same form since before Sepulchre was developed, and Exhale is the natural continuation of that. The new protagonist, Alex, brought to life amazingly by Madeleine, is one of the most important characters in the canon, and my personal favorite. Hopefully people will get as much enjoyment out of playing her as I did writing her.

Stuart Morton, Producer, Mastertronic says: Sepulchre returns in The Charnel House Trilogy and more chilling than ever. Beware and be ready. The Steam train will be arriving this April.

The Charnel House Trilogy will come to PC through Steam this April.

alien-IXBBQDs

After director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie, Elysium) released his personal “Alien” movie art/design project on Instagram, fans went crazy over the direction that he was hoping to take the franchise. Looks like FOX has taken notice and closed a deal with Blomkamp to develop a new “Alien” film. “So I think this is officially my next film,” Blomkamp confirmed on Instagram.

Variety claims that this film will definitely be in the Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, … franchise and not a “Prometheus” sequel. “Prometheus 2” is also being developed, but directly by Ridley Scott. Both films will be produced by Scott’s production company, Scott Free.

This new “Alien” movie is said to be scheduled for a late 2016 release – at the earliest.

Here are the personal art design project images released by Blomkamp from last month. Take note – there is no guarantee these are indicative of his now-official FOX movie deal/project.
