Zenimax Files Lawsuit Against Oculus

oculus-vr

May 21, 2014 (Rockville, MD) — ZeniMax Media Inc. and its subsidiary, id Software LLC, filed suit today against Oculus VR, Inc. and its founder, Palmer Luckey, for illegally misappropriating ZeniMax trade secrets relating to virtual reality technology, and infringing ZeniMax copyrights and trademarks. ZeniMax is also asserting claims for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, and unfair competition against the defendants. The suit was filed in federal court in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

The suit arises from the defendants’ unlawful exploitation of intellectual property, including trade secrets, copyrighted computer code, and technical know-how relating to virtual reality technology that was developed by ZeniMax after years of research and investment. ZeniMax provided this valuable intellectual property to defendants under a binding Non-Disclosure Agreement that specifies such intellectual property is owned exclusively by ZeniMax and cannot be used, disclosed, or transferred to third parties without ZeniMax’s approval. ZeniMax’s intellectual property has provided the fundamental technology driving the Oculus Rift since its inception. Nevertheless, the defendants refused all requests from ZeniMax for reasonable compensation and continue to use ZeniMax’s intellectual property without authorization.

All efforts by ZeniMax to resolve this matter amicably have been unsuccessful. Oculus has recently issued a public statement remarkably claiming that “ZeniMax has never contributed IP or technology to Oculus.” Meanwhile, Luckey has held himself out to the public as the visionary developer of virtual reality technology, when in fact the key technology Luckey used to establish Oculus was developed by ZeniMax.

“Intellectual property forms the foundation of our business,” said Robert Altman, Chairman & CEO of ZeniMax. “We cannot ignore the unlawful exploitation of intellectual property that we develop and own, nor will we allow misappropriation and infringement to go unaddressed.”

“ZeniMax and id Software take their intellectual property rights seriously,” said P. Anthony Sammi, a Partner of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP which represents ZeniMax and id in this matter. “We now look to the federal courts and will pursue all appropriate measures available under the law to rectify defendants’ egregious conduct,” he added.

Iceberg Interactive Celebrates 5th Anniversary

StarDrive2_5

Haarlem, The Netherlands – May 21, 2014 – During the past five years and through one of the toughest periods in recent economic history, Iceberg Interactive has strived to become a major force in PC game publishing by striking a rich vein of gold in the dark reaches of space and fantasy. By concentrating on a small number of niche genres that continue to grow in popularity including space and fantasy worlds, 4X, strategy, and simulation, Iceberg Interactive is celebrating its fifth year of growth with its biggest, most impressive line-up to date.

Headlining the five-game 2014 roster is Amplitude Studios’ fantasy-based 4X game Endless Legend, the 4X space strategy title StarDrive 2, the space sim Starpoint Gemini 2, the 4X space strategy title Lords of the Black Sun, and the arcade combat flight game, Vector Thrust, the majority of which are currently in Steam’s Early Access program.

Since its inception in 2009, Iceberg Interactive has carved out a unique niche as a resilient, resourceful, and fleet-footed indie publisher. By taking risks with rookie developers, managing its costs wisely, and investing in genres that big publishers have left for dead, Iceberg has positioned itself as a leader in the 4X, sci-fi, and strategy genres.

“Iceberg’s progress to date stems from the fact that we are all gamers, and we like to play the games we publish – this gives us a certain affinity with our customers – we are all about games, and it reflects in the deep, rich games we publish,” says Erik Schreuder, CEO of Iceberg Interactive. “The demand for strategy, 4X, and space games never stops. It’s just that most of the larger publishers feel that, because these games aren’t multi-million unit sellers, they are not commercially viable. This is where we see our opportunity. PC gamers are a very vocal lot, and have responded in kind by letting us know how much they love our games and consistently ask us to keep them coming.”

Among the 70-plus titles published and distributed since 2009, Iceberg has created a name for itself with standout titles Killing Floor, Wings of Prey, Armada 2526, Starpoint Gemini, APB Reloaded and Dark Fall: Lost Souls. More recent hits include Horizon, Gas Guzzlers Extreme, Endless Space, and StarDrive.

Erik Schreuder is available for interviews to reveal how Iceberg’s strategies and approaches to the indie PC market, its knowledge of Steam, and its passionate embrace of the 4X strategy genre, have buoyed the company and carved out a reliable niche for growth.

Wasteland 2 to Launch by End of August

wasteland-2

Newport Beach, California – May 20, 2014 – inXile Entertainment announced an end of August launch window for Wasteland 2one of the most successfully crowd funded projects/video games of all-time and sequel to the critically acclaimed smash hit Wasteland and the post-apocalyptic predecessor to the Fallout® series. In addition to the end of August launch window announcement, inXile Entertainment has released the entire Arizona portion of the game via the Wasteland 2 early access beta, which is only available at http://store.steampowered.com/app/240760/.

The highly anticipated, post-apocalyptic turn-based Wasteland 2 offers an alternative history. America lays lifeless in the hot ashes and radioactive embers of a deadly nuclear holocaust and players must take command of an elite squad of desert Rangers, formed in the time-honoured tradition of the Texas and Arizona Rangers.  Setting out across post-apocalyptic and treacherous landscapes players try to help the last remaining remnants of humanity in their struggle for survival against hordes of desperate bandits, insane criminals, decaying mutants and much worse.

“It’s exciting to be in the home stretch on a game I’ve been wanting to get to for the last two decades. The feedback from our backers on the early beta has been great and I’m proud of the way Wasteland 2 is shaping up. The scope of the game is immense with a word count that is greater than The Lord of the Rings novels and a solid 50 hour+ game experience that has diversity from beginning to end. My goal has been to over deliver on our backer’s expectations for Wasteland 2,” said Brian Fargo of inXile Entertainment.

Developed by an amazing team of RPG pioneers that include Brian Fargo and Chris Avellone and with a musical score composed by the legendary Mark Morgan, Wasteland 2 is a return to form for RPGs because it actually provides options and choices. Options allow players to make fundamental choices in customization and character creation throughout the game’s role-playing progression with decisions that carry consequences and impact a living world.

Wasteland 2’s early access beta mode, which GameSpot called “one of the best post-apocalyptic role-playing games to emerge in a long time,” is available on the Steam store http://store.steampowered.com/app/240760/. End of August marks the launch window for the full game, available for PC, Mac and Linux gamers.

Zepp Labs Launches Zepp Tennis for their Multi-Sport Sensor

zepp-tennis

LOS GATOS, Calif. – (May 20, 2014) – Zepp Labs, a leader in sports sensor technology and new leader in tennis data, today released the first ever consumer technology that enables tennis players and coaches to capture and analyze serves in 3D on their smartphone or tablet. Simply attach the Zepp™ multi-sport sensor to the handle of any racket, serve a ball and instantly see 3D results on your smartphone or tablet (iPhone, iPad or Android device) when using new and improved Zepp Tennis™ app. The new app also measures important serve metrics such as racket speed, ball speed potential, spin, backswing time and impact time, which gives players and coaches a new more scientific way to evaluate performance on the court. Additionally, the new sweet spot feature shows you where you make contact with the ball on the racket strings—a key element in gauging your contact quality and consistency.

“3D performance analysis is something that’s never been available to tennis consumers before, and we’re incredibly proud to be the first company to offer it,” said Jason Fass, CEO of Zepp Labs. “Players know that small adjustments can make a huge impact on their game. Using Zepp, now they can help pinpoint where to make adjustments on their serve and work on repeating their ideal swing.”

Additional features include the ability to overlay and compare two serves, compare your serve to a tennis pro or even your own coach, view your serve history and track your serve trends and performance over time. Users can also choose between 3D Serve Practice and Play Tracking, the former offering 3D serve analysis only and the latter providing the ability to track and aggregate swing data about your forehand, backhand and serve during a practice session or a match.

The Zepp multi-sport sensor is available at Apple stores, select Best Buy and Verizon stores, tennis-warehouse.com and Zepp.com for $149.99. The new Zepp Tennis app is free and available in the App Store and Google Play. The Zepp multi-sport sensor also works for golf, baseball and softball using the Zepp Golf and Zepp Baseball apps.

Additional Information on Zepp Tennis’ New Metrics

  •  Racket Speed Impact measures, in miles per hour, the velocity of the sweet spot of your racket when it impacts with the ball.
  •  Ball Speed Potential is a prediction of ball speed based on your racket speed assuming you strike the ball as well as possible.
  •  Ball Spin indicates the amount of spin the racket puts on the ball after impact and is calculated on a scale of 0 (no spin) to 10 (maximum amount of spin).
  •  Backswing Time measures, in seconds, the time between tossing the ball until the lower point of the racket drop position, or when you have brought your racket up, and bent your arm in an L shape, and the racket head has dropped in preparation to swing and make impact.
  •  Impact Time measures, in seconds, the time from the end of the backswing until the racket impacts the ball.

Blue Force Gear Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig Review (Airsoft)

TSP-CHESTRIG-SR25-CB with mags-800x533

Blue Force Gear (often abbreviated as “BFG”) has been making tactical gear since 2004. The company prides itself on crafting products that allow the operator to retain high mobility while on-mission or, in our case, playing long-duration airsoft games. One of their biggest innovations has been the creation of the Ten-Speed magazine pouch line. These magazine pouches feature military grade elastic and the company’s ULTRAcomp laminate material which molds to the shape of the magazine inserted into them. They don’t rattle around when you are running and they don’t fall out if you have to dive into a prone position. Blue Force Gear married their Ten-Speed SR25 magazine pouch with a form fitting chest rig to create the Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig.

The core chest rig of the Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig system is made from 500D CORDURA Ballistic Nylon, making it very thin and easy to wear. The material, while thin, is also very rugged and seems to be able to put up with a good amount of abuse. In the center of the chest rig’s main panel are three sewn-in Ten-Speed SR25 magazine pouches surrounded by a 3×3 MOLLE webbing panel on each side. Additionally, the chest rig features an inner pocket, measuring 18″ inches by 7″ inches in which you can store things like maps, documents, IDs, money, phones – the list goes on… I should mention, however, that the inner pouch isn’t all that thick, so you would be best served by only storing flatter items there. Thicker items tend to distort the overall shape of the main panel. The chest rig connects around the user’s back in an “H style” harness that features a small strip of Velcro for patch placement.

We used our Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig in our designated marksman loadout to go with our ARES Knight’s Armament M110 SASS airsoft rifle. This particular airsoft gun’s magazines are spot-on in dimension to their real-steel counterparts. So, it was a great way to test out what the chest rig was capable of. Initially, I had some issue inserting the M110 magazines into the tight mag pouches and couldn’t possibly see how I would be able to insert magazines in them while on the go. Thankfully, the Blue Force Gear press contact gave me some helpful advice and I left the magazine pouches full for a couple days to stretch them out. After, the pouches were still tight, but a lot more broken in. They are tight be design, of course, as they do not flop around or make a lot of noise while running or sneaking around.

The Blue Force Gear Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig is the ultimate in lightweight, minimalist, chest rigs for those of you carrying SR25 style magazines. It’s actually minimalistic to a fault as that means there is not a lot of space to add pouches or gear. I would have liked to have seen the addition of a few MOLLE rows up the front shoulder straps of the chest rig. It wouldn’t have added a lot to the chest rig’s weight, and could have been a nice bit of real estate to put a flashlight or small utility pouch. Of course, you can always wear the Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig over armor if you like – you would just have to be careful to size it correctly as to not cause any hangups while moving about. Blue Force Gear’s Ten-Speed SR25 Chest Rig retails for $90 dollars and is available now over at their official website.

IK Multimedia iKlip 2 Review(iPad/iPad Air)

iklip2_ipadair

IK Multimedia came up with the iKlip holder to fill an increasing niche that the iPad could fill but there were no great solutions for: attaching to a microphone stand. Once on a microphone stand the iPad could be used for karaoke, sheet music display, set list, mixer, remixer, instrument instructor, tuning system, the possibilities are only limited by the imagination but had been mostly aimed at the music industry and as a teleprompter for public speaking.

I don’t do either of those much anymore, I can’t hold a beat or sing a note and my public speaking days are pretty far in the past. I could have seen applications for the iPad 2 in news directing but those days are past me now it seems too. I spend a good deal of my time now in bed due to genetically inherited medical conditions and a life rough on the body. As a result I have developed a new appreciation for things that make it easier to still play games, do reviews and keep in touch with the world. It was with these in mind that I approached the iKlip 2.

The iKlip 2’s construction breaks down to a sturdy iPad holder attached to a swivel ball which is attached to a C-clamp. This design serves perfectly and solidly to clamp it to a mic or camera stand and could totally be used to cover an event as a iPad camera stand or it’s intended purposes. I found when laid up in bed it attaches nicely to a camera stand to hold the iPad close at a good level for my eyes so that I can type on a bluetooth keyboard or use it for FaceTime or other video conferencing uses placing the camera at an optimal level.

3_iKlip2_vert-back34

The nice thing about the C-clamp and swivel ball is that you don’t have to limit yourself to a mic/camera stand. It attaches nicely to a night stand, to a bed tray, to a wheelchair, the visor of a car, the clamp makes it so that once again the uses are limited only to the imagination and the swivel ball makes sure that whatever you attach you will still have an excellent viewing angle of the screen.

Even now I am typing briefly on a desktop, my body already beginning to rebel against the sitting up position, but I have my iPad clamped to the side of the desk using the iKlip 2 so I can monitor Twitter and Facebook on it without having to switch to different windows on my desktop monitor and can concentrate on getting the story written.

Last Call:
The IK Multimedia iKlip 2 does a great job at what it is marketed for, teleprompter and music, but it’s uses far exceed these areas. The design is extremely effective at making the iPad available to limited mobility individuals and can make the iPad more user friendly during travel. It even makes it so that the iPad can work as a second computer screen. The iKlip 2 will be with me on the road as well as in bed to keep me connected to the world.

Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within Review (Xbox 360)

2836_9b492982f63badd4c2b08f5242f5a1c2

Just in time for May The Fourth Be With You and Revenge Of The Fifth Pinball Fx 2 has released a new set of Star Wars tables truly aimed at the franchise’s core fans with Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within.

Hands On:
Pinball Fx 2 has mastered the physics of pinball like no other video game title out there and will probably only be outdone by themselves. The only time a flipper feels weak is when it is supposed to, the only time a bumper is sloppy is when that is the table’s setting. Skill shots feel as much in your control as if you were pulling a real plunger, simply put the bigger surprise on one of these tables is if they didn’t work perfectly.

The graphics on older core tables from the first Pinball Fx game have had updates and new tables like these Star Wars ones set benchmarks for all future tables to follow just as the Marvel ones had before. The tables are rendered beautifully and realistic where they are supposed to be realistic and where the Star Wars characters or bonus games play beyond real world physics they are done so well as to compliment the tables rather than distract from them. You don’t mind seeing Han Solo at the Millennium Falcon controls on one side or Chewbacca in the engineering back on the other because they flow so well with the table.

So the graphics and the physics are spot on which brings it down to gameplay or in this case table design. There are three basic types of tables and this set of Star Wars ones run the full gambit. Short tables play faster with more frantic flipper action, long boards tend to involve more skills shots and bumper action. Middle is a mix bag and can be even designed to play more like a short or a long.

028433

First is Han Solo, a nice medium bordering on large table that gives you some room to play. The bonuses are outstanding, especially ones involving the Millennium Falcon that sits waiting for battle at the top of the table. Han Solo spouts lines through the entire play, many of which are either directly lifted from the movie or inspired by them. The voice acting is pretty good, a couple lines definitely sound like an impersonator but it is still a lot of fun to hear him call you a “fuzzball”. This table definitely has a feel and theming of the original trilogy.

The Next table up is Droids which at first I thought might be inspired by the animated series as some of the other Star Wars table sets has one or two tables dedicated to it. Instead it feels more like a deleted scene lifted from A New Hope. The droids are onboard the Jawa Sandcrawler crossing the desert and are trying to get the aid of other droids to escape to freedom. Jawas are watching closely though, ready to zap them at a moment’s disobedience. It’s fun to be able to get so much of a storyline out of simply playing a pinball table and paying attention to what lights up and what the bonuses are. It also can be extremely addictive as you get the Droids closer and closer to a way out.

028424

Next is A New Hope and this table tries to tell as much of the movie’s story as possible while knocking a metal ball around on bumpers using flippers. Visually the theming is spot on but also the animated graphics and bonuses all try to interpret part of the story. For a true and loyal fan of the original trilogy this is probably the best of all the 10 Star Wars pinball tables. The voice work is terrific, all the characters you want to see from the movie make an appearance and all on a pinball table! This is truly a work of art.

The final table is Masters Of The Force: Holocron. This is a table which bridges all the movies showing your favorite force wielding warriors of both the light and dark side which is going to appeal to every play of Star Wars The Old Republic who expected to be more when they started wielding their sword of light. The slightly odd take on the iconic characters is their relationship to holocrons. Unless you are a deeper fan of the universe than the average film fan you probably have no clue what a holocron is. Some of the books have entire storylines dedicated to these buggers and you know a true Star Wars geek when they build their own replica. To try to simplify the definition as much as possible they are mini organic computers with AI gatekeepers. In the Star Wars universe holocrons (short for holographic chronicles) were used by the Sith to store vital information about the dark arts of the Force since let’s face it if there is one master and one apprentice and the master gets killed there goes the knowledge of the Force. It was later adopted by the Jedi as well.

028427

On this table you are running around collecting holocrons much to approval of Yoda when you pick up a Jedi one and much to the delight of the Emperor when you get a Sith one. This table represents a struggle for the Force laden soul of the player as they bump and flip their way to their destiny. It is a neat concept and one that players of recent games such as the Force Unleashed are familiar with but might leave some casual players a bit in the dark, hopefully much like in our household someone with Star Wars books and games (and a few plastic lightsabers) is around to clue the player in.

Last Call:
If you like pinball at all this game is worth playing, if you are a fan of the original trilogy then Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within is a must play. It made me wish I could afford to buy all the Pinball Fx 2 titles, particularly the other six Star Wars tables. I hear one is dedicated just to old school Darth Vader… mmm dark side, they have cookies.
