img_21366_3

Hamburg – January 30, 2014 – ROCCAT™ Studios, German manufacturer of high-quality gaming peripherals, announces the availability of the Kave XTD 5.1 Digital gaming headset, the flagship version of the new Kave XTD series. The Kave XTD 5.1 builds upon the foundations laid by the original Kave headset, improving existing features and adding even more impressive innovations to refine the tried and tested feature set that made the original model a worldwide success among gamers.

Smart improvements for smart gamers

The Kave XTD 5.1 Digital includes a fully-equipped desktop remote with a built-in premium 5.1 sound card. Also included in the feature-packed remote is ROCCAT Smart Link, a patented technology that lets users pair their smartphone to the remote via Bluetooth, allowing them to make and receive calls through the headset while gaming.

ROCCAT Smart Link technology eradicates the problem of overlapping conversations during gaming sessions caused by talking on the phone with the headset still on.  The patented technology automatically mutes the chat software when a call is picked up, giving you complete privacy and preventing you from disturbing your teammates.

The Kave XTD 5.1 desktop remote comes with comprehensive headset and system audio controls and boasts 5.1 speaker ports, letting users connect to their existing speaker system, easily toggle between headset and speaker output and eliminating the need to crawl under the table to re-plug audio cables.

Supreme surround sound and comfy build

Like the original Kave, the Kave XTD 5.1 Digital delivers true, rich 5.1 surround sound.  However, the new Kave XTD 5.1 also features three individual drivers per ear cup aligned at a 12-degree angle for incomparably immersive and crisp sound, comes with a completely redesigned head band for superior comfort and weighs 25% less than the original model.

The Kave XTD 5.1 Digital is also engineered and manufactured using new materials to enhance its comfort and durability, making it suitable for extended hours of gaming.  The detachable microphone will also come with a mute LED indicator, but has also been redesigned to improve sound quality and reliability.

The Kave XTD 5.1 Digital was nominated for the “Best Hardware” award at gamescom 2013 and is now available for USD $169.99.

Randal’s Monday to Release in Q3 of This Year

randal-monday-17

Hamburg, Germany / Alicante, Spain; January 30, 2014 – Adventure gaming experts Daedalic Entertainment and Nexus Game Studios are teaming up to bring the upcoming comic humor point & geek adventure Randal’s Monday to a world-wide audience. Both companies schedule to release the game later this year digitally for PC.

Randal’s Monday, developed by the Spanish team Nexus Game Studios, centers around geek and pop culture references from the 1990s and early 2000s, and gives a pretty authentic insight into how hard it is to overcome these stupid days of each week.

Randal is the best main character one can ever imagine: he’s a kleptomaniac, a sociopath and an awful friend above all. After his friend Matt’s engagement party, waking up on a Monday morning with a massive hangover, Randal finds Matt’s wallet in his pocket. Inside the wallet, the precious engagement ring.

It doesn’t take Randal long to sell the ring – triggering a fatal curse. Matt commits suicide, and Randal is now supposed to live through the same fateful Monday again and again, doing whatever is needed in order to fix the horrible situation. Randal must recover the one ring and his life, before the situation worsens… or the universe collapses.

Randal’s Monday features cynical humor, geek culture references and classic point & click adventure gameplay at its best. The game pays tribute to a generation of gamers, readers and viewers of subculture media products. Players will find countless items and references to things they grew up with. Retro video gaming consoles, anyone? Your favorite movies and TV series from the 80s, 90s and 2000s? It’s all in there! Take your time and pixel-hunt each screen for everything that’s in there – whereas the adventure gameplay takes care to use all of today’s comfort features, of course.

Randal’s Monday is developed by the Spanish team Nexus Game Studios, who teamed up with the adventure gaming experts at Daedalic Entertainment to prepare the world-wide release. The PC point & click adventure game is scheduled to be released in Q3 2014.

FEATURES
• 7 great chapters – gameplay time will depend on how much time you spend in front of the TV in your childhood.
• More than 40 different environments carefully hand-crafted.
• More than 50 characters including repulsive mothers, retired priests and talking skulls.
• Jillions of references and homages to geek culture.

Economic Crimes Unit Raids Funcom Offices

tsw_euevent_5 (1)

Looks like the folks at Funcom have hit some rough water as Norway’s National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime agents raided the game developer’s offices this morning. The trouble doesn’t end their as Funcom’s stock ceased trading on the Oslo stock exchange as well. All of this went down because Funcom is accused of breaching the Securities Trading Act. Allegedly, Funcom did not follow official and legal disclosure requirements related to their Lovecraftian MMORPG, The Secret World, from August 2011 until two months after the game’s release in July 2012.

What does this mean for gamers who play Funcom MMOs? Well, the developers offices are officially shutdown for now and we have reached out to our Funcom press contact for official comments. Until then, stay tuned!

SanDisk Connect 64 GB Wireless Flash Drive Review (Tech)

SanDisk-Connect-Wireless-Flash-Drive-1

We at Gamingshogun.com got a double dose of goodness when it came to SanDisk and their new wireless media systems. The GamingShogun himself got some fun time with the SanDisk Wireless Media Drive and I got to try out the SanDisk Connect 64 GB Wireless Flash Drive – which has just about the same functionality at a slightly more affordable price.

Room in my pockets is always an issue for me, yet I can’t leave home without a flash drive. I have on more than one occasion worn them like a string of shark teeth (ed. note: Or zombie ears!) on a necklace so that I would have all my portable storage where I need it. Yet that never really helps me with transferring pictures and video off my phone, something I am pretty sure the entire Gamingshogun.com gang are guilty of not doing often enough. All this is where the SanDisk Wireless Flash Drive comes into play.

It simply looks like a slightly larger than normal flash drive and acts like one too, you can plug it into a computer and transfer files and charge it via a built-in USB tip. Where it’s different is the functionality it shares with the SanDisk Wireless Media Drive. It becomes a portable Wi-Fi media server for your iOS or Android devices. You can connect to up to 8 devices and you can stream three channels of video at once (that’s two less channels than the Media Drive). It carries a four hour charge and also comes in 32 GB or 64 GB size with expandable memory by SD card. Basically, the trade off between the two is one has a smaller battery charge and less streaming capacity but comes in at a lower price tag.

Whether you choose the SanDisk Media Drive or The SanDisk Flash Drive you are doing yourself a huge favor by entering a whole new world of file transferring and viewing. The device frees up valuable disk space on your smartphone or tablet while allowing you to keep those pictures and videos handy. Just mind the official GamingShogun.com warning and keep your eyes on the road!

Typo Keyboard Review

Typo-Keyboard-iPhone-5-5S-Protection

In high school I was able to palm a basketball easily. One time in a fight I held a guy by the neck halfway up a wall while I talked to his friends about staying out of it. My nephew used to love that I could hold his entire face and half his head in one hand. In case this isn’t getting the point across I have big hands, and my thick fingers will never be piano friendly. For that matter they have one heck of a time typing on a phone. I use auto-correct like a wing man, it saves my butt on a regular basis but it has even begun to believe that I spell the “tge”. I know I am not alone, there are people out there who have multiple phones of multiple brands so they can text on one and get work done on another. Still certain work has been given up on, just because WordPress is available on a phone doesn’t mean it is usable with that phone’s keyboard. Apparently this isn’t a problem for just us lowly folks because so big wigs have tried to do the best thing since combining peanut butter and chocolate into a little cup. They created the Typo Keyboard.

Description:
An iPhone keyboard case that attaches to your iPhone 5 /5s. Finally keys you can type on!

Features:

  •  Type Faster w/ Fewer Typos: Users report typing 50% faster and with less Typos
  •  Release your Screen: Touch keyboard brings back 40% more screen space for typing
  •  Full Backlit Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard for typing in low light environments
  •  Battery Indicator: See how much battery you have at any time
  •  Quick Currency Keys Access: Quick access to all your most necessary currency keys
  •  TYPO smart Typing: Custom TYPO Smart Auto-Correct Enabled

Hands On:
First thing that has to be addressed is the elephant in the room: this keyboard looks just like the keyboard of a Blackberry. That being said the similarities would make sense since the Blackberry is probably the one that the founders Ryan Seacrest (yes that Ryan Seacrest) and property mogul Laurence Hallier were using as secondary phones when they commissioned the keyboard to be invented. It also makes sense because that is the keyboard people who have used external phone keyboards have gravitated towards, the cool thing about this one is that it is a removable keyboard in case you just want to use your screen or it’s battery runs out.

The keyboard is backlit which is nice for folks used to screen keys but each key has a raised edge on it so that you can quickly and easily locate the right key. Being able to use alt key to get to the numbers is really handy and faster, I even like the relocating of the home button. It doesn’t add that much length to your phone, it frees us a lot of your screen by not having the keyboard on it and the width is actually less than most cases. The keyboard charges separately so it doesn’t drain the phone’s battery and there is an indicator on the screen of how much battery it has left, the battery lasts between 7-14 days depending on usage. Also it is just bluetooth pair and play, so if the battery does die or a friend borrows the phone who can’t stand the keyboard you can turn off bluetooth and take it off. If all that isn’t enough it has it’s own auto-correct that is designed with the keyboard’s most commonly made typos in mind.

typo-keyboard-iphone

Now for the drawbacks. With the home button covered it is less convenient to navigate the touch screen because you have to go to the lower corner of the keyboard then back to the touch screen each time you want to use the home button. Apple’s latest iOS increased the button size to make typing on the touch screen much easier than it used to be making the size difference in the keys nominal. A plus and a drawback is the fact that the keys make noise, if you like the satisfaction of hearing your keys pushed to know you pushed them it is nice, however if you are texting a lot the clicking could get annoying to those around you. Lastly if you have big mitts like me then this keyboard will help a little with your typos and finger placement, but not that much.

Last Call:
If you like typing on a Blackberry better than typing on an iPhone but love all the iOS apps and such then this is the perfect case for you. If you tend to be typotastic or a slow typist then this might help, users have reported a 50% increase in speed with fewer mistakes. If you just have big hands you might want to look into a side slide out keyboard case because the keys aren’t that much bigger. Overall the Typo Keyboard might just be able to cut down the number of phones you have to drag around or improve the usage of the one you have.

Anker Astro External Battery Review (Tech)

cf0e7865-e21e-4ba6-b714-20f70c1f6fe2

I was having issues with my iPhone 4S right before CES, problems with battery charging. I took it into the Apple Store where they said it was fixed, and I went home to the same problem. So, thinking maybe part of the problem was the foot-dragging I was doing regarding updating to the latest iOS, I updated and headed off to CES. That’s when I found out my phone was dying. A lot. I was having better charging luck but the charge was being suck down like a milkshake on a hot summer day. As luck would have it, one of our first stops at CES was at the Anker booth where I met my new little buddy, the Astro the External Battery.

The Description on the box says “Scanning the walls for open outlets wasn’t ever fun. The Astro breaks you free from the wall outlet – and the fear of getting disconnected…”  I want to say it was only mildly embarrassing scanning the coffee shop for an outlet during lunch or plopping down in one of the corners of the press room where people circled the outlets with their wall warts waiting for an opportunity to plug in and juice up to send out some more pics and tweets.  The embarrassment wasn’t mild and it was certainly frustrating.  So, when Anker handed me a fully charged Astro and sent me on my way I plugged it into my phone and left both in my backpack, taking the phone out to take pics or send messages or tweets but putting back in when I was done.  At the end of the night of heavy use I actually had a higher charge on my phone than I did when the day started and when I plugged it in to charge Astro was still at 3/4 full.

Turns out I was running around with the baby bear of the three Astro batteries, the 2nd gen 6000 mAh version. The larger ones come in 9000 mAh and 12000 mAh flavors.  If that just sounds like techy-goop to you think of it as the 6000 mAh providing 3+ charges of your iPhone and about 2 charges on a Galaxy S4.  Honestly I just drooled on myself at the thought of having the 12000 mAh in my bag.

Since CES, I have lo0ked up all the optional settings on my iPhone’s latest iOS that I can do without and my battery life has greatly improved.  Don’t think that I will ever cover another event or even go on an overnight trip without my little Astro external battery in my pocket though.

Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past Review (PC)

sf2-demons1

Nordic Games has released their newest stand alone expansion for the Spellforce 2 saga: Demons of the Past. Demons of the Past is officially the fourth game in the Spellforce 2 saga, continuing the story from the original Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars. The good news is that Demons of the Past, like Faith in Destiny which I reviewed last year, is a stand alone expansion. This means you can jump right into the saga with this game and do not need to purchase the previous three releases. However, if you do this, you will experience the same disconnect with the over arching story line that I felt when I started with Faith in Destiny. You will feel like you are coming into a great movie about three quarters of the way through, and will need to bug your neighbors as to what the hell is going on.

Story

Demons of the Past picks up where Faith in Destiny essentially left you off, with the world of Eo in peril and you, an Elder Shaikan, trying to prevent The Nameless from completing the destruction of the planet. As the Elder Shaikan, it is up to you to deal with this peril and defeat Zazhut, the main villain of this expansion. In order to defeat Zazhut, you will require the help of the Gods, but they are not so eager to help you. Before setting out to finally end this evil once and for all, you will have to convince the Gods to help you in your hour of need.

The people at Nordic Games wrote a sprawling epic in the world of Spellforce 2 that is both gripping and enjoyable to play. However, this is lost depending on where the player jumps into the series at. Sure, you can grasp the single campaign of each release and gather information as to how this story fits in with the rest, but you will be lost for a significant time in the beginning. Truth be told, I couldn’t remember much of the story line from Faith in Destiny, and had to relearn what was going on when I started Demons of the Past. If you are new to the story, be prepared to try to get past that feeling in order to be able to fully appreciate and understand the story.

If you are not new to the world of Spellforce 2, then welcome to the end game of this campaign. Like past expansions of Spellforce 2, you begin by recreating your avatar, or by selecting a whole new one. As I remember from Faith in Destiny, the same faces seem to appear in the character creation menu, so you can faithfully recreate your avatar from past games.

Game Play

The Spellforce 2 series is a combination of real time strategy and role playing game. You will be able to recruit specific members to your party in the beginning of the game, choosing between mage, healer, fighter, or ranged fighters. As your party members level up, you will be able to choose what talents and spells they will train in, in addition to allocating equipment that is found along the way. The RPG elements of Demons of the Past aren’t some sort of cut down version that you see in most RTS games, but a full RPG experience. It was very satisfying to choose my main party in the beginning on how I plan on playing the game, then continuing to personalize the characters to my play style.

The RTS half of Demons of the Past is seen whenever you are out of character screens, for instance during combat or world movement. The classic RTS style controls are found in Demons of the Past; the drag and collect feature for gathering troops, right clicking on enemies to attack, or clicking on the small portraits of your party members to utilize their spells or powers. Resource management is just as important in Demons of the Past as it is in other RTS games, and you will need to manage your troops, money, and materials in order to succeed.

sf2-demons2

The Spellforce 2 series did a fantastic job in combining the elements of an RTS with an RPG, and making it a fun game to play. The real critique with the series is that Nordic Games did this just well enough for Spellforce 2 to be a solid game, but did not bring enough innovation to the genre for Spellforce 2 to become a great game. Everything game play related works well and is bug free. The RTS sections of the game feels just like any good RTS game from that genre, and the RPG elements really allows you to tailor your party to how you play and the item system brings in that thrill of discovery any time you see loot sparkles.

Demons of the Past has about 50 main quests with about 40 side quests available to experience, bringing the experience to around 25 hours of game play. That is a significant amount of play time for this game. Demons of the Past also brings in a new survival mode and a boss fight mode that can be played separate of the main campaign, in addition to the traditional RTS multiplayer. With Demons of the Past, players will also be able to play as almost all races in the Spellforce 2 world, including the Pact, Shaikan and Undead.

Aesthetics

This is the big downfall for the Spellforce 2 series – specifically, Demons of the Past. The game looks like it is about ten years old, rather then just being released last week. The graphics of the avatars have a blocky look to them, as if they are unfinished in the process of being rendered. The avatars also seem to be much less detailed then other games on the market. The closest game I can make comparisons to is Warcraft III, which came out in 2002. However, Warcraft III had a great aesthetic to it, leaning towards the animated rather then realistic. While I am usually the first to say that games don’t need to have the most up to date graphics to be great, the game does need to look like it is a recent release. If I walked by Demons of the Past as it is being played, I would swear that someone was playing a retro titled game, not a new release.

The voice acting for Demons of the Past helps save what would rather be a disappointing aesthetic experience. The actors deliver their lines adequately without being too over the top. The musical score is good and ramps up with the situation, but is fairly forgettable once you stop playing the game.

Final Thoughts

Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past is a must buy for anyone that has played the Spellforce 2 saga and loved it. You will get more of the same with Demons of the Past and will enjoy the continuing story line. For the rest of you, the best I can say is that it is a good and solid game, but I would recommend beginning the series with Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars, which is the first installment. If you like that game, then by all means continue the story and work your way through all of the expansions. You will receive absolutely no benefit from picking up Demons of the Past first, rather then Shadow Wars.
