Hamburg – February 3, 2014 – ROCCAT™ Studios, German manufacturer of high-quality gaming peripherals, continues to grow its professional gaming team, with the Hamburg based company today announcing that Korean StarCraft II pro player Ko “HyuN” Seok Hyun has joined Team ROCCAT. HyuN is one of the top StarCraft II players worldwide, winning last year’s DreamHack Open in Valencia and the MSI Pro Cup, and finishing runner-up in both the Home Story Cup VIII and the MLG Spring Championship 2013.

HyuN commented: “The last months in my old team weren’t easy for me – therefore I’m glad that I finally found a professional and reliable team here at ROCCAT. I can now focus on playing StarCraft II and my goal for 2014 is to win as many events as possible with my new team”.

HyuN is the second player to join ROCCATs StarCraft II division following the signing of Ukraine-based StarCraft veteran ‘DIMAGA’ last year. “StarCraft II still has a big impact on the international eSports community and therefore we are happy to sign another strong player for our team”, said ROCCAT founder and CEO René Korte. “HyuN will not only represent ROCCAT at all these big events but he – like all of our other professional players – will also help us develop new products, features and technologies.”

Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. Case for iPhone 5/5S Review

4676-Large-f9bbf7b0-6c07-43f1-9c37-55c321e3093d

Recently, Trident Case sent us over one of their new Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. iPhone 5/5S smartphone cases. The Rampage Edition we got to checkout features both black and camouflage coloring with the word “Rampage” in a sprayed on stencil style white font across the back. One might think that the Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. phone case is very similar in terms of design to its standard Kraken A.M.S. counterpart given their shared model name.

They couldn’t be more wrong, however, as the Rampage Edition has an entirely new case design. Its only real shared feature with the standard Kraken A.M.S. is that of the metal kickstand. In fact, the design is changed from the base model so much, I can’t help wonder why they decided to use the Kraken A.M.S. name at all and not create a new line of cases – but, I digress. Further separating the two cases is that the Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. features a two piece design, unlike the standard Kraken A.M.S.’ three piece construction. This means that the Rampage Edition is a bit lighter and thinner without sacrificing any of its protective qualities. The Rampage Edition features a built in screen protector which hugs the iPhone screen nicely and without too  much of a separation – although it still leaves a very minor gap in between which has always been a pet peeve of mine when it comes to cases. A feature unique to the Rampage Edition is its 32 inch, anodized steel chain, which allows you to tether the phone case to a belt loop or other attachment point via a small clip. The chain feels strong enough, but I would not depend on it solely to hold my phone close to me. I suggest using it as a last resort – not a first line of retention. Truth be told, the chain feels somewhat gimmicky and part of me would have rather not had one included. That being said, the Rampage Edition is coined from its spokesperson, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who is often seen with a chain around his neck – see the cross promotion? Anyhow, if you dislike the chain, then you can remove it altogether, so there is that option for you.

One aspect of the Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. worth special mention is its belt clip/holster. Made from a strong plastic material (not sure if it is ABS plastic), the holster/clip attaches easily and stays attached. One of my comrades told me of an older Trident Case he had for a different phone model and the holster/clip broke off easily. This new holster is definitely more robust in terms of its durability. In reviewing this Rampage Edition case, I am reminded of the Griffin Survivor series smartphone case. The Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. is very similar in terms of protective qualities but, unlike the Griffin model which relies on its belt clip for an angled stand, sports its own kickstand and chain.

Overall

Trident Case’s new Rampage Edition Kraken A.M.S. case for the iPhone 5/5S is a very well-built smartphone case that will definitely keep your phone safe in case of accidental impact. At an MSRP of $59.95, the Rampage Edition is just perfect in terms of its price point and a serious contender for your hard-earned money.

Monster Jam Review (iOS)

screen568x568a

When I was younger, I remember going to tractor pulls and seeing legends like Bigfoot and my favorite, Grave Digger. Well, not only are monster trucks still around but they are now a show of their own and the Grave Digger has spawned a whole family of ‘Diggers. So what better way to pass the time between events at one of the shows (or just standing in line at the DMV) than playing some monster trucks on your phone through a free app called Monster Jam!

Description:
Bringing the family-friendly entertainment of live Monster Jam events straight to your tablet or mobile phone all year round, Monster Jam is an authentic and dynamic mobile gaming experience! Monster Jam will not only allow you to relive your favorite Monster Jam moments but to create your own memorable monster truck stunts using all the biggest names in Monster Jam, including Grave Digger, El Toro Loco, Maximum Destruction and Monster Mutt! Smash through barriers in actual Monster Jam® events and races, or freestyle through unique environments and hill climbs!

screen568x568c

Features:

  •  16 fan-favorite licensed Monster Jam Trucks recreated in breathtaking detail!
  •  Classic Monster Jam Arenas to compete in, including Anaheim, Georgia and Houston.
  •  Unleash your Truck upon unique and astonishing HD environments such as downtown Tampa, Detroit and Jacksonville.
  •  Unique and distinctive game modes including racing, jump stunts, towing competitions and freestyle!
  •  Experience new content every month when updates bring more trucks, new environments and extra game modes!
  •  Convincingly accurate 3D physics simulation!

Hands On:
I was extremely excited to get into the game and wanted to get behind the wheel of one of the Grave Diggers right away. Well, first you have to start with one of the lesser-known monster trucks and work your way up to the big boys. So, instead I chose Blue Thunder (you can pay real life money or earn some by like the developer’s page, but it still costs twice as much gold for the higher trucks). The trucks take a bit of getting used to, tilting the phone turns the truck and swiping the screen speeds it up. You can also tap powerups on the side of the screen that you purchase with gold. I spent my first few times turtling my truck after which I was able to run around in some fashion though never as neatly as the AI.

screen568x568b

The freestyle is particularly fun since you just cruise around jumping and crushing. The races get your heart going because you are doing so many different things on your phone that it is hard to keep track of whether you have the lead. The jump race is great because watching these trucks soar is quite a sight. Probably my least favorite of the events is the pull test which is kind of funny since that used to be one of my favorite in person, maybe it has something to do with seeing the mud kick up so high in at an actual event. It has the simplest controls of the different modes but just felt like you were swiping your phone for a long time. In the virtual world, jumping and crushing cars are the total way to go.

Last Call:
Monster Jam for iOS is a very fun game, especially if you are a monster truck fan. You have to earn or pay your way into a Grave Digger, but you will also have fun in the process. If you want to keep your cash in your pocket this game is completely playable for free, you just have to have patience and earn your way up.

AEX Warfighter DMR Airsoft Electric Gun Review

OEG003_1

The folks at AirsoftExtreme loaned us one of their new “Warfighter DMR” AEGs to review. As some of you may know, getting your hands on a good DM (Designated Marksman) airsoft rifle usually involves building it yourself out of a multitude of parts. AirsoftExtreme aims to simplify this process by building an airsoft DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) which is good to go right out of the box. How did they do? Is the AEX Warfighter DMR worth its $329 dollar price point? Read on to find out…

Isn’t a Designated Marksman just a sniper?

The DM role differs significantly from that of a specially trained sniper. A sniper is a specialist highly trained in fieldcraft, who carries out a range of missions independent of others, and more specialized than standard infantry tasks. In contrast, a DM is a soldier who has received some additional marksmanship training. Within a fireteam, the DM’s role is to provide an additional capability to the infantry platoon, which is the ability to engage targets at greater ranges than the other members of the squad or section.

Usually, you will see designated marksman rifles with a higher power scope than those fielded by the rest of the fireteam. Also, some airsoft fields allow DMRs to have a higher FPS at the expense of using fully automatic fire – so, check your local field for their DM rules.

Design/Look

The AEX Warfighter DMR resembles a lengthened M4 style airsoft gun that is akin to the SDM-R designated marksman rifle. It doesn’t feature any trademarks or licenses save for that of AirsoftExtreme so it is not trying to copy any existing DMR directly, but definitely shares a resemblance to a few. It features all metal, black upper and lower receivers as well as a metal rail system with an upper monorail that allows you plenty of real estate for rail accessories. The folks at AEX have seen fit to include front and rear flip up sights on the DMR, but I would recommend equipping it with at least a 4X scope/optic to give it that DMR look and function.

It is also worth mentioning that the battery compartment is located inside the crane stock and buffer tube is of the MilSpec diameter in case you want to change the stock out at some point for one with an adjustable cheek riser. Also, the Warfighter DMR comes with two adjustable rail covers which really adds to the look of it being some variant of the real steel SDM-R rifle. Additionally, AEX has included a decent vertical foregrip in the box – so you have just about everything you need to start playing. The current bundle at AirsoftExtreme’s website even includes a LiPo battery, charger, and bag of BBs.

Performance

On the field, the AEX Warfighter DMR performs its role very well. The airsoft gun’s 6.03mm inner barrel and hop-up system keep the BBs going in a very flat trajectory for quite a distance, and you won’t have any difficulties engaging targets out at the 200 feet range so long as its adjusted properly, and that’s with .20G BBs. I shudder to think of its range if you loaded it up with .25G BBs. The FPS rolls around 410 FPS with .20G BBs. This version 2 gearbox features 9mm bearing bushings, high torque gears, and a polycarb piston. Like any good DMR goes, you have a long inner barrel – this one measuring at 500mm while the overall length of the rifle varies from 36.5″ to 40″ inches depending on where you have the multi position stock set. The manual rates this DMR up to an 11.1V 15C LiPo battery, and it had no problems shooting with one for our testing. Playing some games with the AEX Warfighter DMR, I was consistently impressed and, despite a trigger draw which is a little longer than I prefer, it performed exceptionally.

Official Features:

  • Length: 36.5″ – 40″
  • Weight: 6lbs
  • Inner barrel length: 500mm
  • Caliber: 5.95mm
  • Velocity: 400 – 415fps (0.20g BB)
  • Inner Barrel Diameter: 6.03mm
  • Enhanced Version 2 Gearbox
  • 9mm bearing bushings
  • One piece metal hopup unit
  • QD Spring System
  • Steel High Torque Gears
  • Click here to get the manual ONLINE in PDF format.

The airsoft gun also features a nifty electric blowback system to give you a bit of feedback in your shooting. The amount of quality as well as quantity in this airsoft gun package is pretty astounding. It is clear AirsoftExteme is coming out of the gate swinging with this line of in-house AEGs.

Overall

Overall, the AirsoftExtreme AEX Warfighter DMR is a great choice for a designated marksman rifle, right out of the box. It will allow you to jump right into the designated marksman role and provides a very capable platform to perform any additional upgrades you want to do to the gun. The AEX Warfighter DMR is available on AirsoftExtreme’s website for $329 dollars and, in the current bundle, includes a LiPo battery, battery charger, and bundle of BBs.

Might and Magic X: Legacy – A Review (PC)

MMXL_Coral Priestess_115961

Limbic Entertainment and Ubisoft have just released the newest incarnation in the Might and Magic world, Might and Magic X: Legacy. Legacy is designed to give you that old school dungeon crawler experience, similar to games like Legend of Grimrock or Dungeon Master. What sets Legacy apart from it’s predecessors, is that the action isn’t just locked into tight, monster filled caves and dungeons, but expands to an entire surface world. Might and Magic X: Legacy gives you a much more complete turn based, grided, role playing game then the likes of Legend of Grimrock, but it comes with it’s own set of shortcomings as well.

Story

The initial cut scene for Legacy tells the player an epic tale of the ancient battle between angel and devil, with man caught in the middle. In the end, in order to end the conflict between angel and demon, Uriel manipulated Emperor Liam and the nations of the Empire, to hunt down and destroy the Faceless. After the death of the Emperor Liam, the mortals began to see through Uriel’s lies and discover that they have been manipulated all along. This truth began to tear into the Empire. Years of political treachery and outside conflict have taken it’s toll on the Empire, as it nears the edge of collapse. Your role in this story, has absolutely nothing to do with any of this.

You represent a band of four adventurers, that are brand new to the lands of the Empire. What epic quest brings you to the Empire? The dying wishes of your old master to have his ashes buried in his homeland. While in Sorpigal Town, you pick up some other quests to pretty much just to pay the bills. These beginning quests include clearing out a well full of spiders, investigating a lighthouse, and removing a thieves’ den that is located near town.

The story does get a little grander as you proceed through the game, but nowhere near the level that is suggested in the introductory cut scene. It feels like the intro belongs to another game entirely. I can understand wanting to give the player some history about the land that the adventurers are heading to, but this could have also been done through books or other items in game, with an intro cut scene that is a little more connected to the game that is about to be played. Story is told through text boxes at the bottom of your screen whenever you interact with a person. You are given choices of topics to ask about or quests to undertake, but there is no real interaction with the people of Legacy. In comparison to the other dungeon crawlers I mentioned about, Legacy does have the best story going for it. However, that really is only because the other games had almost no story what so ever.

Game Play

Might and Magic X: Legacy does come in much stronger in the game play area of my review, but still has a few knocks against it. To start with, let’s talk about the overall game play type for Legacy. Legacy is a turn based, first person, grided, role playing game. This game plays almost exactly like others of its type, with the exception of being able to entire the wilds surrounding the towns. Legacy plays almost identical to the old school games of this type, and that is both a blessing and a curse.

You begin the game by selecting a difficulty mode, either normal or hard, then by creating a party of four. What’s nice about Legacy is that you can just use the default party and be very capable of finishing the game, or build your own party and experiment with the vast combinations of race, class, and spells to see what works. Races and classes are pretty typical of this type of genre that includes orcs, dwarves, elves, fighters, mages, rangers, and crusaders. Depending on the skills you choose in the beginning, your character will have a different role to play out. Building a tank, for example, utilizes different skills then a berserker, even though they are both considered warrior classes.

Combat is a thing of beauty in Legacy, and works very well at being tough but fair. Each character will have a set of skills and attacks that they can do on their turn, or use an item such as a potion or antidote. Combat becomes extremely tactical during some of the harder fights that you will run into. When will you sacrifice the damage out put for a taunt? Which spell to use to best help your party? Did you bring enough potions for everybody? These are very typical concerns and questions that you will be asked during your adventures. Using your mage to air blast a foe back, so that your ranger can entangle them and give your tank a few extra moments to heal up is a very satisfying experience.

What is not so satisfying is the movement when you are not in combat. Yes, I know it’s supposed to be that way since its turn based, but you should really be able to move a lot more smoothly if you are not in combat. Just because the older versions of this game did it, doesn’t mean we cannot make improvements. Also, while we are on the subject if irritants, let’s talk about Uplay and some of the bugs I ran into. I hate having to play a game I bought through some sort of authentication process, and Uplay is no better then any of the others that I’ve been forced to use. In fact, during the review process, I had to have a completely new authentication code sent to me, because Uplay locked me out of my original one due to a random bug. I also ran into some game ending bugs that caused me to have to restart to an earlier save file. In one case, it was simply that I could not walk through a door, like the party become stuck on something. While few and far between, game ending bugs are just inexcusable in this day and age. It shows a complete lack of quality control.

MMXL_Skill loot and stuff_115992

Aesthetics

Legacy is a graphical beast, which is weird to say for something of this genre. It’s not that it has the best graphics in town or just looks phenomenal, it’s a graphical beast because of it’s poor optimization. Legacy is taxing, even on higher end PCs, and doesn’t even look like it should be that much of a resource hog. Legacy is good looking, but is just way to taxing for what you get. The sound design is solid, you get some very nice music and sound effects that fit within the world you are exploring. There is no voice acting in game, so everything will have to be read through dialogue boxes. To be honest, the aesthetics department is the area that feels the most rushed with Legacy. No voice acting, bad optimization, visual glitches, and just overall lack of polish can be seen throughout the game when it comes to aesthetics, and that to me just lowers the overall feeling to Legacy.

Final Thoughts

Looking back through this review, I feel that I might have been a little harsher on Legacy than I meant to be. Truth be told, my experience with the game was very frustrating because of Uplay, the glitches, and how my machine ran Legacy. The core game play is truly a solid experience with old school dungeon crawlers. Legacy’s development feels like it was placed on an extremely tight budget that did not allow for the polishing that was required to turn a good game into a great game. I would definitely still recommend Legacy to anyone that has beaten Legend of Grimrock and is looking for a new dungeon crawler game. If you are looking to get into the genre for the first time, my suggestion is to play Legend of Grimrock first, since that is the better of the two games, then give Legacy a go if you liked Grimrock. Might and Magic X: Legacy is available now on Steam.
