World of Tanks Japanese Tanks Trailer

WoT_Renders_Japan_Ha_Go_1280_1024_en

September 19, 2013 — Wargaming, the leading free-to-play MMO developer and publisher, today announced that its highly acclaimed action game, World of Tanks, will soon be joined by war machines from Japan.

“The introduction of Japanese tanks allows us to explore the design and innovation of a number of legendary armored vehicles and give players the chance to experience their technological evolution throughout the mid-20th century,” said World of Tanks Producer Mikhail Zhivets. “Tank models based on original designs of Japanese engineers will offer players a wide selection of authentic upgrade schemes, each tailored for particular combat objectives.”

The Japanese line will initially field two branches with nine medium and five light machines, including such fabled models as the Chi-Ri prototype, the first post-war Japanese design Type 61, the light Type 95 Ha-Go and the medium Chi-Ha tanks. Developed during the late 1950s, the Type 64 (STB-1) will become the Tier 10 medium model.

Along with existing armored vehicles from the USA, China, France, Great Britain, Germany and the USSR, the new tech tree coming one of the forthcoming updates will become the 7th national line introduced into the game.

Six Flags Great Adventure Fright Fest 2013 Review

Fright Fest 2013 color logo

Our annual visit to New Jersey’s Six Flags Great Adventure’s Fright Fest took place this past weekend. Now in its 22nd year, Fright Fest takes over the entire park with shows, scare trails, and other Halloween-themed events that take place over the course of the seven week extravaganza.

Fright Fest kicked off on Friday, September 13 and boasts 6 haunted walk-throughs and 4 scare zones. There are 5 proper terror trails which we got to check out.

We visited on a perfectly crisp fall evening and arrived a little before the 6pm unleashing of over 200 zombies into the park. The evening kicks off with a zombie parade and then a 20 minute show that consists of a horde of Zombie dance numbers. It’s an ok show, they do a pretty good job with some nice dance numbers (my wife enjoyed it). Anyway, it’s a nice segue into the evening’s ‘fright by night’ as the show wraps up right around 6:30 and the bulk of the terror trails open at 6:45.

If you’ve been before, there is one new trail, The Darkness, and one completely revamped trail, The Manor, both of which are indoors and open at 2pm. The other trails are hold overs from last year and it’s safe to say they’ve improved.

sfga-signage

We started with the Asylum, which is packed with psychos. The winding path provides plenty of hiding spots for the ‘talent’ who use it to their advantage. The zombies packing this trail do a great job of interacting with the guests, and some of them are extremely skilled and show off an incredible amount of dexterity. It’s worth noting that this trail boasts the most disgusting bit we saw the whole night with a bathroom scene that they just took to the next level, going over the top with smells and visuals.

Next up, we took on Wasteland. A desolate trail of misery which includes some very cool special effects like fog, strobe lights, and a snow machine. There were also some awesome looking zombies here who blended into the trail while just standing still. They did an outstanding job of scaring the crap out of the guests as we witnessed multiple people absolutely freak.

We then made our way over to the other side of the park to take on Voodoo Island. This trail was solid with a good amount of witchdoctor-like zombies sprinkled throughout. We had one female zombie follow us through the bulk of the trail. She kept popping up out of nowhere, definitely put us on edge. The set pieces on this trail stood out as well, with some really large objects littering the area. It’s in a great part of the park which is very dark and fits the mood nicely.

The final two terror trails are housed next to each other in giant warehouse-like buildings. The first one we hit up was The Manor which tries hard to be a haunted mansion, but fails on multiple levels. The ceilings must be 40 ft high, yet the trail is set up with 8ft plywood walls that wind through the building. The rooms we weaved through are only lightly decorated (there is only one path). A bed here and there, an ornate frame on another wall, overall, just very sparsely decorated and only a handful of zombies we witnessed. I hate to say it, but their regular haunted house is a better scare.

sfga-upsidedown

The last trail we took on was The Darkness. In theory, this is the coolest one as it takes place in a pitch black maze. We were given an 8ft rope which everyone holds in order to stay together and the first person is given a small flashlight to guide the group. We were leading our group and I think it’s safe to say you want to be in the back if you want the scares. Using the flashlight to find our way we were able to see most of the zombies that were hiding on this trail. Most were just dressed in black so that they could blend in and hiding around corners since there weren’t any objects in this trail since the theme is just the pitch blackness. Being up front sort of spoiled it for us since the flashlight exposed the badies, hence, being towards the rear of the rope seemed to be the best bet for scares. Up front it all just looked like black walls, not too scary and the novelty wore off after the first minute.

Throughout the park there are other scare zones, many of which had long lines so we were not able to explore them on this night. The one area we did walk through was the Circus of Thrills which was packed with the largest ratio of zombies (all psycho clowns!) to people and also had several death-defying circus acts including a Globe of Death. And, as in previous years, there are a ton of shows and activities for kids that take place during the day (though we saw a lot more kids than I would have thought during the evening). We didn’t get a chance to check these out either as time ran out on our evening when things began to shut down at 10.

The only downside I can foresee are wait times. All of the Terror Trails have an additional charge (starting at $8, with combo packs running between $15-60, the later offering front of line access) and I estimated the wait time on the Saturday night we attended to be 45-60 minutes. In the past, when we’ve gone in more inclement weather, the lines were much shorter, the same waits go for most of the coasters as well. I don’t see how you could see/ride much if you go for just an evening. Also, signage to find the trails was minimal at best and made them difficult to find.

sfga-zombies

Overall the park gets decked out for the festivities, the zombies are top-rate and get into their roles. In the coming weeks there are several special events so definitely check out their calendar as they have some ‘runs’, blood drives, and even a triathlon scheduled.  I’d rate the terror trails as follows:

  1. Wasteland
  2. Asylum
  3. Voodoo Island
  4. The Darkness (be in the back)
  5. The Manor (don’t waste your time)

Last thing I want to mention, while nothing to do with the Fright Fest, the fried chicken they serve is delicious. We look forward to next year!

PAYDAY 2 Review (PC)

payday2_logo_black

I was lucky enough to get into E3 a few years back and one of the games that just seemed to come out of nowhere, but impressed the pants off me, was PAYDAY: The Heist.  It wasn’t the guys in suit jackets and masks by the demo consoles; It wasn’t the cool, swag masks (though I still have and wear mine sometimes while playing); It was that the game was something out of just about every guy’s secret dream: to be involved in a big heist.  It is why we eat up heist movies, whether they be stealthy and funny like Ocean’s Eleven or balls to the wall intensity like Heat. To paraphrase Dan Cook, we all want to be walking down the street shot in the leg yelling “where’s the van?” while carrying machine guns.  The reality of it is these real life moments seldom end well, so it was great to reenact these movie moments at the safety of a computer!  I played the heck out of PAYDAY: The Heist, so when PAYDAY 2 came along all I could say was “you’ll never take me alive, copper!”

2

Description:
PAYDAY 2 is an action-packed, four-player co-op shooter that once again lets gamers don the masks of the original PAYDAY crew – Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf and Chains – as they descend on Washington DC for an epic crime spree. The new CRIMENET network offers a huge range of dynamic contracts, and players are free to choose anything from small-time convenience store hits or kidnappings, to big league cyber-crime or emptying out major bank vaults for that epic PAYDAY.  While in DC, why not participate in the local community, and run a few political errands? Up to four friends co-operate on the hits, and as the crew progresses the jobs become bigger, better and more rewarding.  Along with earning more money and becoming a legendary criminal comes a new character customization and crafting system that lets crews build and customize their own guns and gear.

payday-2-e3-2

Features:

  • Rob Banks with Friends – Players must choose their crew carefully, because when the job goes down they will need the right mix of skills on their side.
  • CRIMENET – The dynamic contract database lets gamers pick and choose from available jobs by connecting with local contacts such as Vlad the Ukrainian, shady politician “The Elephant”, and South American drug trafficker Hector, all with their own agenda and best interests in mind.
  • PAYDAY gun play and mechanics on a new level – firing weapons and zip tying civilians never felt so good.
  • Dynamic Scenarios – No heist ever plays out the same way twice. Every single scenario has random geometry or even rare events.
  • Choose Your Skills – As players progress they can invest in any of four special Skill Trees: the Mastermind, the Enforcer, the Ghost and the Technician. Each features a deep customization tree of associated skills and equipment to master, and they can be mixed and matched to create the ultimate heister.
  • More Masks than Ever – PAYDAY 2 features a completely new mask system, giving players the ability to craft their own unique mask together with a pattern and a color combination.
  • Weapons and Modifications – A brand new arsenal for the serious heister, covering everything from sniper and assault rifles to compact PDWs and SMGs. Once you’ve settled for a favorite, you can modify it with optics, suppressors, fore grips, reticles, barrels, frames, stocks, all of which will affect the performance of your weapon. There are also purely aesthetic enhancements – why not go for the drug lord look with polished walnut grips for your nine?
  • Play It Your Way – Each job allows for multiple approaches, such as slow and stealthy ambushes, to running in guns blazing. Hit the target any way you want, and watch as the heist unfolds accordingly.

Hands On:
I was plenty happy with the gameplay in the first game and yet they improved it and made it immensely more dynamic and diverse in the sequel.  Before you could complete a mission, there were certain steps you had to follow.  How you handled the steps was up to you but certain actions had to happen.  In PAYDAY 2, you have a ton of different ways to complete a mission, depending on the skill trees your team picked up.  If you have the right member in your crew, you may not have to use one of those annoying drills to open a safe. Instead, you might pick it or blow it open with C4.  If you have a “Ghost” on your team, you might be able to get in and get the loot stealthily, without triggering general alarms and getting into a standoff.  There are so many choices that you can play the same mission over and over with entirely different actions each time.  This diversity will keep the gameplay fresh for even longer than the last game, and that one didn’t get stale very fast.

CRIMENET adds a lot to the game too since it lays out a map and allows you to pick the job you want to join with the difficulty you feel like attempting.  I would suggest playing it offline to start, just to get a feel for the game before playing with others. Online gaming communities can be somewhat unforgiving if you don’t have a general handle on what you are doing, so learning the paces and places a little doesn’t hurt.  Besides, there is randomization with every heist, so practicing a few times offline won’t burn you out on one. You just get to see the different variations, like safe placements and armed responses.  Then, you can join the CRIMENET online and really get a feel for how good the game can be.  PAYDAY 2 requires more teamwork than the first game so you are far less likely to have a jerk on the team not help you up when you are down.  You cover each other’s butts and watch backs as specialties such as blowing a safe are performed.  It also makes it so that when you find a group that gels together well you might pull off heists together for a few hours and really feel like a team.

All the weapons and mask customization is really nice too as it helps make the character you are playing feel like your own.  At the end of a successful heist, you have the opportunity to win weapons upgrades or mask customizations such as patterns, colors, and textures. This is great as you may find yourself in a heist with another person using the “Troll” mask but yours is a different color, has a scale texture, and has a large Ace of Spades on the forehead.  It is also nice to be able to go into your safe house and look at the walls and see all the variations on your masks and weapons you have made.  The shooting range is nice to see how new weapon changes really effect their performance.

payday2-2

Last Call:
I was ready for PAYDAY 2 to be more of the same from PAYDAY: The Heist and I would have been happy for it if that were the whole story.  The first game was great and is one of the titles I always keep updated on my laptop. This way, during my travels, if I need a break or to take out some frustration I hop on and do a job or two.  Honestly, I would have been happy if PAYDAY 2 was a glorified DLC of the first, but they made vast improvements on the first game while giving the exact same feel.  You are still on a heist right out of a movie, but your specialty and those of your teammates will decide how things play out. Also awesome is that heist are never set up exactly the same way twice, so you never truly know what you are in for.  I would say the roughest part of PAYDAY 2 is getting off the game in a reasonable period of time. It is very easy to lose track of the hours when you are running with a good crew and everyone is covering each other.
