First Campaign Episode for Arma 3 Gets Release Date

arma3_survive_screenshot_01

Prague, Czech Republic, Thursday 10th October 2013 — Bohemia Interactive today announced the release date for the Survive campaign episode of Arma 3. Dropping in as free DLC on Thursday October 31, players take on the role of a regular soldier stationed in the Republic of Altis & Stratis.

“Our first campaign episode, ‘Survive’, introduces players to Ben Kerry, a regular soldier who’s part of a NATO peacekeeping mission in the Mediterranean. Following a couple of years of uneasy cease-fire, this US-led deployment is now in the process of a staged drawdown. The vacuum left by withdrawing forces is being rapidly filled by the opposing CSAT faction, creating the conditions for, one might say, a flashpoint” , explains Jay Crowe, Creative Director on Arma 3.

“Of course, it’s not just about our own story, but another opportunity to provide yet more building blocks for the platform – new weapons, animations, 3D objects, scripted modules – each designed to grant content creators even greater freedom to create and share their own content. Looking forward to the forthcoming episodes, we’ll continue to expand Arma 3’s sandbox with additions such as new vehicles.”

Arma 3 features the large open terrains of ‘Altis’ (270 km²) and ‘Stratis’ (20 km²), 12 singleplayer showcases, 3 factions showcases, 9 multiplayer scenarios, 10 firing drill challenges, more than 20 vehicles and 40 weapons, 5 factions, the scenario editor and modding support. The singleplayer campaign is deployed across 3 free DLC episodes after release.

People can purchase the regular Arma 3 (44.99 EUR/39.99 GBP/59.99 USD) or the Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition (49.99 EUR/42.99 GBP/64.99 USD) from Steam and Store.bistudio.com. A boxed version of Arma 3 is also available at many of the major retailers.

SpellForce 2 – Demons Of The Past Pushed Back

spellforce2fid_ss1

Vienna, AUSTRIA (October 10th 2013) – To ensure a fully formed gaming experience, Nordic Games has announced it will now release SpellForce 2 – Demons Of The Past on January 16th 2014 due to additional features in the multiplayer department.

Demons Of The Past will feature the popular free game mode, where the tales of the single player campaign can be experienced in a new way i.e. with other players cooperatively. To top it off, a new survival mode will be implemented with distinctive objectives and gameplay. More detailed information on the specifics of the new modes will be released in due time.

“We had the choice to either release the single player part first, then follow-up with the new multiplayer modes later, or release it all in one go. We opted for the latter,” said Gennaro Giani, Localization and Production Manager at Nordic Games. “Of course, this was not an easy decision to make, but it reflects our uncompromising standards when it comes delivering a comprehensive gaming experience to every fan/gamer out there.”

Demons Of The Past is the final in the endearing SpellForce 2 series and like its earlier incarnations is a mix between an RPG and RTS that puts players right at the centre of the mysterious and wonderful SpellForce universe. Demons Of The Past adds five new maps, offering eight in total to explore.

Continuing the story from previous add-on Faith In Destiny, players can now conclude their journey with Demons Of The Past where the fate of Eo rests in the players’ hands. Along the way players will meet old and new faces – will they be of help or hindrance?

SpellForce 2: Demons of the Past is out on January 16th for PC, priced USD/EUR 19.99, GBP 17.99.

Knock-Knock Review (PC/Steam)

steamworkshop_webupload_previewfile_100635956_preview

I love a stylized game, maybe the only thing I love more than a stylized game is a creepy stylized game.  I tore through Limbo, loving the puzzle solving, the stylized silhouettes and the crazy creative ways in which the poor character was torn apart.  Knock-Knock reminds me a lot of Limbo in the sense that is a puzzle game and in the fact that it is beautifully stylized, but then it departs onto it’s own stranger journey that tests your wits and creativity.

Description:
There is an unusual house standing in the depth of the forest. It served as a laboratory and a home to three generations of Caretakers. The last Caretaker has recently started noticing frightening changes in the familiar background as certain things fall down, and noises and grating sounds come from somewhere. Something strange is coming from the forest. During the night it even seems that someone makes himself at home in the shadows of the rooms, attics and basements…

The main character is sick of headache and is tempted to sleep, but he must not: there are unwanted Guests in the house. He has to stay awake until dawn, sitting up and trying not to let the fear drive him out of mind. The light is going out now: once the lamp goes dark it is time to hide. Meeting the Unknown itself face to face may drive him insane right away, especially with his unstable state of mind.

The only thing left to the main character is to try to bring the pieces of his world back into one: he mixes substances, notions, thoughts and reminiscences. The combinations may come out simple and evident, yet unexpected and frightening at times.

Walking around the house, avoiding to meet the Unknown, trying to concentrate, pulling himself together and holding on to his sanity, the main character counts the minutes until sunrise. Each subsequent night may turn out even more dangerous than the one before, but it is only during the night that the main puzzle can be solved: what is going on? Are the Guests real or are they consequences of insomnia? What happened to the forest? What is actually happening in the house? Where does the reality stop and the imagination begin?

steamworkshop_webupload_previewfile_100635956bb_preview

Features:
– Hiding. An imitation of playing hide-and-seek with nightmare creatures. A hybrid of Lode Runner, Home Alone and Nightmare Ned.
– Counting down until the sunrise. The goal of the gaming night is to maintain sanity until dawn. A gaming night (“level”) lasts for 7-10 minutes.
– Turning on the light. You can only walk in peace in the rooms where the light is on, yet the light is not eternal as it needs to be kept alive.
– Exploring the dreams. From time to time there are portals opening in the walls that let the unknown into the house, yet the main character can step forward and enter the portal himself to go inside a dream.
– Running experiments. The biostation has long since been used by researchers for various tests from simple and routine ones to absolutely absurd experiments trenching upon metaphysics. What the next synthesis will bring? Morphine? A ray of light? Nostalgia? Or just a cup of hot tea?
– Everything that happens in the house is a clue. Try harder and you would be able to expose the underlying mystery.

Hands On:
This is a journey around dark places where things go bump in the night and insomnia has taken a solid, terrifying hold.  Knock-Knock describes itself as a meditation, a found program built by anonymous instructions for some unknown goal.  If that doesn’t define mystery I’m not how else to do it, it’s like Blair Witch but with a found program instead of film.  Why was it created, why was it made, what does it all mean?  The game has solid creepy aspects to it such as hanging nooses, straight jackets hoping around on one leg, wraiths flying through the air and giant eyeballs looking through the wall and yet it is all existential, every thing you see is a clue and every clue brings up questions as well as answers and the answers add up to greater truths.

steamworkshop_webupload_previewfile_10063595vvv_preview

This all sounds very cerebral, which it is meant to be.  You can play the game just as a puzzle game trying to find your way through levels without caring why or what any of it means and it would be a stylized good play.  If however you consider everything said, everything that happens it is an amazingly deep game hidden behind simple play.  You use the arrow keys and the space bar to play and that is about it control wise.  You walk around trying to figure out how to beat the level which is easier if you try to understand the deeper meanings but isn’t necessary.  Also not necessary is turning off all the lights, turning up the sound and playing it in a room or better yet a house all alone, but wow does it add a lot to the game and it’s creepy atmosphere made with dark rooms, strange sounds, haunting voices and strange things moving around.

Despite the creepy atmosphere you don’t die when things go wrong for you, you just start over at your same starting position, waking up in bed.  No gore to be had, no fighting beasties, just simple wandering to learn what the house has to tell you if you are willing to listen.

Last Call:
I’m so glad I got to go hands on with this meditation, this found program written by anonymous hands.  Knock-Knock is a stylized game on the surface that dives deep for any willing to take the journey.  Wander the rooms and woods, discover things about the house and yourself and in the end face your demons by lighting one room at a time.

The King Of Fighters XIII Steam Edition (PC)

ss_c9b3f297842d940022b2a8ea05921284196f3796.1920x1080

I have been playing fighting games like The King Of Fighters since they were invented – I’m kinda old and I have been a video game junkie since I was six. I have always been above average at them, but never great. I still have fun at them but I have died many a time trying to perform a finishing move I spent hours practicing. I’m great with combos and that has always been my saving grace but special moves I tend to jack up. If our resident expert on these games John Dugan were to challenge me the massacre would be epic and ugly for he is one of those players who master the game in every nuance, where I do the moves I do well until I realize I am toast and become a button masher. Anyone who plays the genre though knows King Of Fighters so I’m going to approach this review from the point of view you know the game, have been playing KOF XIII for a couple years but why you need to get the Steam Edition if you like the game even slightly.

The King of Fighters XIII Steam Edition-www.intercambiosvirtuales.org-05-20130913-060719

Hands On:
This game has a lot of features, most of which were already in play on the consoles.  The key one to note for fans of the series is the Steam Edition and only the Steam Edition has been given new netcode.  The results are making the painful, often match killing lag that is faced regularly on the console a thing of the past on the PC.  No more crashes whether you are playing someone next door or someone on the other side of the world, netcoding into Steam’s system makes the game feel like it is being played on one console.  This is huge, a giant leap in the game’s improvement that takes it from a game played with friends on the couch to a true world challenge pool.

The gameplay is designed to work with a gamepad controller so it still feels like a console game even though it is on the PC.  I have it set up on my laptop which means in the many airports I will be visiting during the Halloween season I can play this game anywhere, anytime.  Add to this the ability to adjust graphics that the PC offers and this game just makes better sense on Steam than a console.

With the addition of the three DLC characters being available at launch the game’s roster is a staggering 36 characters, that is liable to keep you busy for quite a while.  The tutorial is excellent for teaching new or returning players the ropes again so they feel at least a bit more comfortable jumping into play with global opponents and the game even has an interesting story.

Last Call:
KOF XIII has been around a while and has a fan following on the console but the smart player will make the shift to the Steam Edition if they can.  The netcode and graphic’s adjustment are game changers and takes it’s online play from routinely frustrating to beautifully smooth.  If you are a fan of fighting games this is a must play, if you are a fan of the series I should have had you at “new netcode.”

Takedown: Red Sabre – A Second Look Review (PC)

takedown-red-sabre-screenshot-ME3050185312_2

Developer Serellan has released a new take on the realistic, tactical squad based shooter named Takedown: Red Sabre. Serellan’s focus was to create a game where the player had to think rather than react. In a game where one shot can end everything, looking around corners and planning your routes makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, the actual execution in Takedown: Red Sabre is less than spectacular. In its current state, Takedown: Red Sabre is a complete mess with so many issues that absolutely ruins the feel of the game.

Story

Mission previews is pretty much the only story you get in Takedown: Red Sabre. Before each mission, you are briefed as to where you are going, what the objectives are and you get to choose an insertion point. You then enter the hot spot with a squad of three and try to fulfill the objectives of the job. That is the entirety of the story line here; mission profile, execution, rinse, repeat. There is no communication during the actual missions between you and headquarters, or even between you and your squad mates for that matter. Games without a story line can usually survive by having fantastic game play elements that really allows the player to look past that omission. The problem here is that Takedown: Red Sabre has some of the worst game play that I’ve seen in a long time.

Game Play

First, Takedown: Red Sabre feels unfinished from the start. The menus do not feel complete, and in many cases don’t even let you know that the choices you are making for the load outs are even being saved. Another aspect of the game that feels unfinished is the artificial intelligence of the other characters. A game that calls itself a realistic, tactical squad shooter had better put into place some AI that can act the part. The enemies switch between being completely useless with a weapon, or being a crack shot from hundreds of feet away. Your squad mates don’t fare any better, as they seem to be incapable at times from even seeing an enemy as they come up from behind. Realism doesn’t just mean that one shot can kill you, it means that the environments and individuals in the game world act as they would in real life, and that just isn’t happening in Takedown: Red Sabre.

Another aspect of the game play that really bothered me was the actual game play. Since the ai of your squad mates is so bad, the only tools left for you to complete your mission was to walk very slowly throughout the entire level, and lean to look around corners. You can’t breach closed doors, nor issue commands to your team to help clear rooms or check the corners as you enter. You literally have no command over anything. There is also no HUD to speak of, except for a countdown mission timer, and your weapon with its ammunition in the lower right corner. You will have no markers on the screen to tell you where objectives are, nor any caller available to help you find said objectives. Your only choice is to search the entire map, room by room, killing enemies as you go. The good news is that there are quite a few different maps and missions available in the single player campaign, but they ultimately end up just being corridors with doors at the end of them.

takedown-red-sabre-screenshot-ME3050185311_2

Takedown: Red Sabre also has a co-op option and multiplayer to go with the single player campaign. Unfortunately, I could not connect to any games online to check out how the multiplayer actually worked. That is very disappointing to me, because the multiplayer had a chance to be very interesting, and might have been actually fun. However, I may never actually see that since there is something that prevents me from connecting to the online games. At the end of the day, that really says everything about my experience with Takedown: Red Sabre, it’s a nice try but the bugs are just too numerous to ignore.

Aesthetics

Takedown: Red Sabre looks dated, and I mean very dated. My first thought when I loaded up Takedown: Red Sabre was how much it looked like Counterstrike Source, and that’s not a good comparison. Counterstrike Source came out in 2004, and this is a 2013 game. While I am one that says graphics does not make the game, the game needs to at least look good. Video games are a visual medium, and when the first impression of a game is that it looks like something that is nine years old, you’ve missed the mark. Corridors all look the same, the rag doll physics are absolutely laughable, and the textures looks like they are only slightly more defined then Counterstrike Source. If the game had a unique aesthetic, that can be at least interesting to look at despite the dated graphics, but this game tried so hard to be realistic, these graphics just don’t do Takedown: Red Sabre any favors.

Voice acting in Takedown: Red Sabre is minimal at best. You have someone reading the mission briefing to you, then you get the occasional chatter during game play, and that is it. It is done minimally and serves the job at hand. Considering how bad the ai and graphics are, I really didn’t pay any attention to the music nor the voice overs that much. Sir Laurence Olivier couldn’t save this production from itself.

Final Thoughts

Takedown: Red Sabre had high hopes and ambitions, but ultimately fails horribly due to the developers execution of the plan. Developing a realistic, tactical shooter is a great idea for today’s market, but the developer has to make sure that there is more realism then just having guns kill you with one shot. The artificial intelligence has to react realistically to the situations in game, and you absolutely have to be able to give your squad orders to complete your objectives. Both of these features are completely missing in Takedown: Red Sabre. The menus are clunky and don’t give you any indication on whether or not your choices have been saved, and I hear there is a multiplayer aspect to this game, but I couldn’t play it. The graphics remind me of a nine year old game, and the game play is just not exciting to keep me coming back. Do yourself a favor, if you absolutely need to play a squad based tactical shooter, find yourself a Rainbow Six game, you will have much more fun.

Montague’s Mount Launch Trailer

steamworkshop_webupload_previewfile_146521424_preview

London, 9th October – Independent developer Polypusher Studios is delighted to announce the release of its debut indie horror adventure game, Montague’s Mount. The Irish studio has been working closely with UK publisher Mastertronic to complete the title which launches digitally today. Developed for PC, Mac & Linux, Montague’s Mount will be available on GOG.com, Get Games and GamersGate. Fans of Steam can vote for the game on Steam Greenlight.

Montague’s Mount, first presented to the world at Rezzed! PC and Gaming Show, was more recently showcased at Eurogamer Expo with the Oculus Rift and the response was phenomenal. Oculus Rift support will be available to all versions of the game within the next few months.

Montague’s Mount is a first-person rollercoaster ride through isolation, desolation and one man’s tortured mind, set against the haunting bleakness of an isolated Irish island. The player regains consciousness on a windswept beach, with no memory of the past. Exploration and puzzle solving lead to some disturbing finds and is the key to finding out what happened – and to escaping the island.

Polypusher is a one-man studio based in Ireland and the game blends personal experience with realistic landscapes and makes extensive use of the Gaelic language throughout. Polypusher Studios’ Matt Clifton says: “Montague’s Mount has been my life for the past two years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into making the game. If you scrape below the surface of the story, the underlying character is basically me, albeit taken to an extreme. We are both foreigners relocated to a remote area of Ireland, isolated from family, friends and the community as a whole. I set out to make a very personal game about how isolation can affect a person, much as it once affected me. Montague’s Mount is not your normal adventure/horror title; it is a more subtle and mature thriller. You can pigeon-hole games like this into the ‘horror’ genre, butMontague’s Mount is a more thought-provoking experience than that. I’m humbled by the response I’ve had from developers and gamers so far and hope they enjoy the complete Montague’s Mount experience.”

Mastertronic’s Neil McKenna explains: “We all loved Montague’s Mount from the moment we first saw it. We were drawn by the way that Matt has told a very adult horror story. Montague’s Mount is driven by its atmosphere – intensified by the gritty depiction of Irish rural life, so far removed from the popular image of that country. More than anything, we love the passion that Matt has invested in the game. We are proud to launch Montague’s Mount today on Get Games and GOG and we hope that Steam fans will be moved to vote on Greenlight.”
